    I want to add a few very important hidden advantages . No winterproofing or storage required. Park trailer and boat in side on a 2 car garage. One personcan easily move trailer with boat around. Smaller boat means less engine size less money. And most important, did you notice that most 12 ft boats are in better condition being sold online because they are stored inside or serve as a second boat to the owner. 12 ft boat are available in higher quantity thus pricing is competitive and cheaper used. Also, aluminum boat even get rusting if stored outdoors so no boat should be parked outdoor for longer duration. Lastly, most fishing expedition have 1 to 2 people on boat, 12ft boat is perfect for that.

      Good idea! We made a video similar to this idea a few months ago ( ua-cam.com/video/lVN0qh9E844/v-deo.html ), but there's always new gear to review and recommend. We're also probably going to make a video where we share our favorite rod/reel setups and how we use them. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Very enjoyable video you guys are a natural at this. Good information and plenty to think about. I have a 14 1/2 foot old town canoe and I’m torn between a trolling motor in a 2 1/2 hp gas motor to hang over the side. I’ll be cruising up the coast medium distance in Lake Tahoe

      I've got a Suzuki 2.5 that I used on a 16' square stern. I'm not sure I'd want to hang that over the side without an outrigger. On the square stern, maxed out it got 8.5 mph with two people on board. I think if I had a standard canoe, the troller would be my choice. You could extend the cables and put your batteries up front to balance the boat.

    • @allans7281
      @allans7281 2 роки тому

      @@rslover65 Yeah Trolling motor works best- I don’t need to go that fast I just love slicing through the water silently. It’s the old town Saranac 146 at only 36 inches wide- should have minimal drag.
      Good advice for the battery but I bought a lithium it’s only 22 pounds. Thx mate

    I just purchased a 12 foot runabout with a pretty decent trailer, wheel lock, new tires for $700. I also happen to have a 55lb trolling motor. I honestly just want it to be able to take my nephews out fishing in our local lakes here in Colorado.

    Instead of drilling and adding heavy wood or aluminum ($) I purchased large coolers for the front and several smaller ones to traverse the middle and sides. This is where i have my live wells, equipment storage and caught fish. Rod holders are also installed on the coolers. My combined total weight increased 75 lbs. If you want to stabilize your cooler, use spray foam and plastic sheets so the foam does not stick to your boat or coolers.

      How much do you weigh now? Do you think a fisherman can be too heavy for a Jon boat?

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  3 роки тому

      We both weigh about 140-150lbs. I don't really think weight for an individual fisherman is a huge issue unless it's an extreme circumstance. The max load is almost 500lbs for this particular jon boat, so plenty of room to accommodate most people. I can maybe see weight distribution being an issue but that's a problem that can be fixed

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  3 роки тому

      There's a lot of places to check. Usually your local marine stores are your best bet but some large retailers like Bass Pro Shops have boats out on display that you could look at. The website of your desired boat brand also usually has a section that directs you to the closest boat dealership in your area

    What guage aluminum is your jon boat. I hear .125 is the minimum gauge for aluminum in saltwater because of the potential to hit rocks and what not.

    So, I don't know anything about boats but I'm planning on getting an 18 foot jon boat for the purpose of mostly fishing in lakes and doing a little tubing. I weigh 275 (Yeah I'm fat 😆lol) and I was wondering how many people would be able to fit on it with me?

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  3 роки тому

      Jon boats in the 16-18 foot range are pretty beefy and could probably fit an extra 3-4 people with you. Lowe has a 16 footer with a max person weight of 715lbs, and Tracker has a 17 footer with a max person weight of 800lbs. If the boat has a center console, it'll most likely be able to hold even more weight. You just have to make sure that the weight is distributed around the boat in a way that keeps it stable

    a 36" beam is for ponds and skinny people, a 48" beam is more a do all boat for normal size 2 men and occasional 3rd. I would not even consider a 36" beam jon boat for me after having a 48" beam jon.

    Great video ruined by a picture of the trump bootlicking liar
    Anyway, width of the boat is important fir stability. It also slows the boat down. I have a Lowe 1040 with a new Tohatsu 9.8 motor. Good set up. Top speed about 23mph. Your right its useful in saltwater. I go everywhere but 2 miles is the limit. Biggest danger is idiots in jet skiis, giant boat wakes that don't slow down. Googans in general. Good information video. Subbed.

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  3 роки тому +1

      To each his own but thanks for watching despite our differences. Good point about the stability, the importance of the boat's width is something we don't often mention. And I agree, lots of undisciplined and uneducated boaters out there. We almost got flipped heading out on the channel once when an incoming 25+ foot boat refused to slow down (You can see that in this video). But overall it's a really fun experience using and maintaining our own custom jon boats!

    I wouldn't buy a Jon boat, since it cost as much as a loaded console boat: for example, a new bare-bone 16 ft Jon boat ($4,200) with a 30 hp outboard ($5,200) , trolling motor ($1,500), and trailer ($1,500), plus seats ($150/each) and fish-finder ($500) cost as much as a loaded console aluminum boat (e.g., Bass Tracker Classic XL, $14,000).

    • @josecruz-peraza5286
      @josecruz-peraza5286 3 роки тому +1

      When you are getting in that class of jon boat, especially the ones like the more expensive grizzly 1648, you are moving closer towards a traditional bass boat so yea it’s definitely better to buy a packaged boat in your case scenario. But generally a smaller jon boat set up in the 10-15ft range (which is what we are generally talking about) won’t cost nearly as much. For reference a 1542 jon boat would cost about as much as that trolling motor you mentioned.
