B. White In most states the trailer title will be as important as the boat title. Without the trailer title you can't get a tag and no tag will get you tickets. Also make sure to take a jack with you when looking at a rig and jack up the wheels and see if you think the tires/bearings will/might/maybe get you home.....
First and foremost, thank you for the good solid info. I'm in the market for a jon boat and found myself rushing to get one. Hearing Your much needed to hear video gave me an reality check. Thanks again.
Extremely helpful. Trying to transition from a kayak to my first boat this season, but it's not lookin good. It would've been nice if you would've mentioned what types of boats you look for and ideal size (i.e minimum width, length, hull type, etc). I know that depends on the intended use, but still helpful information for newbies like myself.
Good information. I just bought a 16.48 today it seems like for every one 16 footer there are about 900 14.50s and I don’t believe in buying something that’s too small just to turn around and try to sell it and then start looking again for that perfect size that you should have waited for to start with… I’ll be on the water soon Brother!
Great advice other than paperwork. Title does not matter for a Jon boat in some states like Mississippi. In that case, check registration and make sure it matches who you are buying it from (with sellers ID). Great video hope this helps someone!
I'm just koming across this video and GOD is good. I'm looking for a aluminum/welded boat now. This deserves more views, like bigtime. I have wanted a boat since I was a kid, and honestly, nothing fancy. Part of the reason is the kinds of waters my dad used to take us out on when I was about 6, which is basically the extent of my boat knowledge. These days I'm kind of thinking about something along the lines of a 16 foot Jon boat with a V front. It'd be big enough to take out my buddy, maybe his wife and daughter, on some of the lakes around here. I kind of lied; my only applicable "boat" experience as of late has been on my kayak, my only personally owed watercraft. For me, it fills the gaps for what I'd want to do on smallest waters, but it's not nearly enough for some of the larger lakes, and I definitely cannot paddle up-stream all day on the bigger rivers. But if I start on the bigger ones, a Jon boat might get me to the smaller ones. I figure, if I plan right, I could maybe save up for a basic boat over the next year or two, even if it's a trailer and hull and I get to save up for a budget motor. But really, outside of your video, you may or may not be surprised how willing people at the registration office here are to give info about boats besides, "check our web site, hon," which says to ask for the books etc. at their offices.
Thank you for the comment! Jon boats really have a special place in the boating market. Easy to find, easy to build, take a beating. I'm not a pro basser, I'm a hobbyist with a family that enjoys boating/fishing whenever I can get out there and it really fits the bill. I hope you find what you're looking for!

I believe I have the same exact boat I've been fixing up. It's a Landau 1562 per CG plate but is really a 1542 with a 62" beam. My boat also has the middle bench seat still in it but I would like it removed. I just got the boat on trade this winter and put a brand new 20 hp Tohatsu on it.
Sounds like it, this one is a "1670" with a 48" floor. I would have removed the center bench also if it wasn't already gone. I have a 25hp two stroke ready to go! I can't wait to see how it performs. I bet that will scoot with that tohatsu.
@@mvboutdoors very impressed with how Landau built these boats. Curious as to how they removed the bench in yours? Did they remove and replace all the rivets? Curious as to why Landau stopped making these boats as well. Really looking forward to your build videos

Great video! I had a nice Grumman semi v Jon boat and it started pitting in the transom. I'm still not sure why it happened. I've heard that it's the salt water corrosion, could be electrolysis ( I kept the battery on a rubber mat) , was it the wood between the aluminum plate on the transom got salt water saturated, maybe the bunks ( carpet covered) , should I have put a couple of zinc anodes on the hull?
Transom pitting is pretty common and not usually related to electrolysis. It's likely if there was wood there from the manufacturer it was pressure treated that when wet will corrode aluminum over time. Pressure treated wood has copper in the solution they treat with and copper eats aluminum.
Check for trailering damage, especially on rollers.tie it down! the keel should support the boat. the seats are structural. submersible trailers should be open frame galvanized and torsion axle if possible, use a light bar instead of trailer lights. look for flex in the transom. have a crappie day.
Thankful i found your video, never owned a boat, never been around boats, but i just decided last week to buy my first, and I’m going to pickup my second tomorrow 😂 ones to keep and fish out of, the one I’m picking up seems like a crazy deal for a 12 foot aluminum with a 9.5 evenrude and a older min kits for 250, I’m planning on flipping one of them and was planning on using pressure treated wood! So, never having worked with aluminum and being a little intimidated by it, am i better off getting non treated wood and sealing it with something like fiberglass resin?
PLEASE HELP. I need a boat just like the one in the background in the intro the green one. How do you get a boat that doesn’t have an annoying seat in the middle but it’s still a John boat
Hey MVP I have a boat I got recently. It’s a 14 foot sears 75 year according to the title and it measures and says sears on it but I had a question. Should it have a HIN plate being that old ? On the title it has a HIN but it’s not 12 characters only 11. And I can’t find any on the boat you think it’s okay ?
If the title is for that boat it should be somewhere on the boat, sometimes its hidden behind the capacity plate or stamped on the transom and not a plate directly.
@@mvboutdoors it’s old it’s a 75 but the HIN on the title is only 11 characters. I’m confused with it. I sent it in the fall to be registered in my name and titled and they did it and it’s legal that way. But I can’t find the tag on the boat.
hey bro.. i just got an old 12 ft Crestliner v hull aluminum. just have bill of sale. In Ohio. If I'm reading it right I don't think I need a title for this small of a boat. Any suggestion?
Yeah you should just need a bill of sale from the previous registered owner. Take that to a boat reg office and you should be set. Same for the trailer.
Brazing is a great tool for certain situations but I would not trust it for a structural component like support ribs. It's not a substitute for welding when parts will bear load.
I got a question I'm towing with a 1994 mazda b2300 5 speed manual, so my to options I'm buying new a 15ft tracker topper john boat or a lowe 14,1 v1460. What's the pros of having a v hull and what's the pros of a flat bottom I plan to use one of the 2 for fishing and also the cons. Anything helps there about the same price I live in the middle of flordia so it's windy shallow and deep water and mainly over grown under the water in spots and many lily's in other spots. And my current rig is a 2021 oldtown sportsman discovery 119 canoe it's awesome but between lily's and the wind it's time that I buy a boat for bigger water.
Having fished Florida lakes for years I would say the flatbottom is going to be more useful. Deep V is best for deep, choppy water. Flatbottom is best for calm shallow water.
@@mvboutdoors Thank you, My worry about the flat bottom is sinking from crashing into another boat wake, I've seen it happen before it didn't sink completely but they took some water on

So I found someone is selling a Jon boat, and I found a small of pitting on the bottom exterior of the boat, I ask about it, he said some wood was sitting on it. Do you think it’s still worth buying?
@@carlos-luisluna5828 corrosion is just one of those things where it's near impossible to fix, so if you're looking for a platform to build a boat to keep for years I would probably stay away.
In Ohio I thought the title on jon boats nothing more than your bill of sale and the registration card you get with the license stickers and there`s a place on the back of the card to sign it over upon sale to new owner, at least that`s the way it is for my jon boat. Good video though because people need to know these things as boats are in sense risky buying. Another thing maybe should have added ,on aluminum boats depending on the brand and type of aluminum that sitting ou tin the sun the aluminum gets fatigued and starts cracking at different points. Star Craft and some others used to be bad for that but in a sense you did cover that in the crack inspection part. I like the newer welded boats with heaver metal but the draw back on them is they run a deeper draft due to their weight and there fore have a smaller capacity. I used to run a Star Craft 12` and it run a 4" draft witch was great for running the shallow rivers in Ohio. But my 12` Lowe runs about a 10" draft and can carry less but it will en dour much more than a Star Craft. Also when you get a boat trailer set up be sure to get a written bill of sale for both and the last registration for the trailer tags also get the trailer serial #`s and put on the bill of sale if it has`nt been destroyed by time. I`ve seen to many lately for sale where the owner says all you got to do is go get it weighed. Scales are not every where so it makes sense to do that as that is what I did and all I had to do was go to the BMV to register the trailer. Thanks for the video.
Title required for 14ft and above, if smaller than that a bill of sale works fine, like for a trailer. Good info on the stress cracks, definitely something to look out for. Thanks for the info.
I see a lot of boats like this for sale on facebook market place without titles and will not buy one without it. all kinds of excuses estate sale buy or what ever..went through this with a motor cycle years ago and will not do it again.
I got hit with paperwork nightmare. Bought from an estate online auction Found it there's no HIN plaque or manufacturer info on boat. There actually is no place where I see that there ever was this info. Boat it older doesn't have foam inside seats so that puts it before 1980ish. The boat commission says I need the death certificate of previous owner. The executor needs to give me legal paperwork stating they were allowed to sell the boat on the deceased owners behalf. Then I need to have auctioneer send me paperwork showing they had the executors permission to auction the boat. All this info is needed but with no HIN info I still may not get the registration for the boat.
You ain't kidding on the importance of a CLEAN title. Trailer or boat, it's a pain in the butt and sometimes impossible it seems to get a title sorted out.
Need Help! I'm looking at buying a boat with a motor and trailer. The seller has the title for the boat and motor, but not the trailer. Should I buy it if everything else checks out?
Too many of those skinny jon boats around and jon boats where not designed to handle the waves they were made for rivers and calm water with the idea that one could get out on the bank without getting your feet wet.
trailer title is important in just about every state. boat title is not done in every state. you cant force a non title state to make one special for you. doesnt mean you shouldnt buy that boat.
Here in Ohio a trailer only needs a bill of sale but a boat requires a title, even if coming from a non-titled state. The hoops you have to jump through to accomplish that isn't worth it for most folks, especially with these cheaper boats. You'll pay more in fees than the boat itself just to get a titled.
GREAT video!!!!!! Example: Bought a tin mfg. and sold in Arkansas. Factory issues a "Certificate of Origin" or "Manufacture," can't remember the exact wording. If the seller doesn't have this or a title it's a nightmare to get a title issued if your state requires it.
I bought a boat that has recent repairs new paint job etc. Turns out the paint and fiberglass covered a totally rotten transom that almost fell off with the engine at sea. The seller hid from me for the rest of his life.
Let’s get it .. congrats on 1k brother .. how can I message you about a question and picture I got a boat I just need to know if I’m getting a good deal
Can any of the smart and experienced people here help me with some advice? There's an old jon boat by a beautiful pond near where i live. The property owner said I'm welcome to use it. I don't plan to fish, nor use a motor. I just want to use it as a rowboat and row out into the small pond, and simply enjoy being on the water, every now and then, and hang out with my little dog in the boat, and the spectacular red koi fish that dwell in the peaceful pond. The Jon boat only had one old dented metal oar lying in the grass beside it, so I am buying oars at farm and fleet. Unfortunately i know nothing at all about boats 😢 (just rowed and canoed a little as a child). I don't know the first thing about oar locks, and sleeves. Can anyone explain to me like I'm five 😂 what i need to know about buying oarlocks and fitting and caring for my oars? They are wooden crooked creek oars. Any easy to understand advice would be very kindly appreciated. 🙏🏽

Check for trailering damage, especially on rollers.tie it down! the keel should support the boat. the seats are structural. submersible trailers should be open frame galvanized and torsion axle if possible, use a light bar instead of trailer lights. look for flex in the transom. have a crappie day.
Would you consider the Bill of sale good for registrating the boat?
No, not unless your state allows that for registration which most do not.
100%, keep pressure treated wood farrrr away from aluminum!
Good info
90% of my issues on used boats have been the trailer
Trailers can be a pain no doubt
great segment. thanks for the advice and insight.
Was wondering what kind of boat is suitable for a suv to carry Buick enclave in particular
Carry like in the back or tow? If you mean carry a 12ft with a tailgate extender could work
Yes I ment tow what size would you recommend
@@jbreawilliams4507 with an aluminum boat I don't think you'll be limited. They are so light you should have any problem with anything under 20ft.
Ok thanks
PLEASE HELP. I need a boat just like the one in the background in the intro the green one. How do you get a boat that doesn’t have an annoying seat in the middle but it’s still a John boat
They are typically called "duck boats"
It's wild how many people selling boats "lost" their boat and trailer titles. Any idea what's up with that?
Probably lost it or bought it without a title originally, gifted, etc. It's super annoying though.
This was super helpful, thanks!
I can't agree with you more on the last part.... always, always get a title or registration. It isn't worth the hassle. Nice video, great information.
Thanks for sharing. You sound like my favorite UA-cam weatherman Ryan Hall 😀
Haha, Ryan Hall is the best -- Glad you liked the video!
hey bro.. i just got an old 12 ft Crestliner v hull aluminum. just have bill of sale. In Ohio. If I'm reading it right I don't think I need a title for this small of a boat. Any suggestion?
Yeah you should just need a bill of sale from the previous registered owner. Take that to a boat reg office and you should be set. Same for the trailer.
You can braze those ribs for many times cheaper than hiring a welder. You should know alumin brazing basics if your buying boats like that.
@@mvboutdoors Thank you, My worry about the flat bottom is sinking from crashing into another boat wake, I've seen it happen before it didn't sink completely but they took some water on
@@str8upn0l1fe6 For sure, getting swamped is definitely a possibility. If you are around heavy boat traffic the V might be a better option.
@@mvboutdoors I fish saddle creek, chain of lakes, and lake summit that's connected to a few other's saddle creek has the least amount of traffic but lake summit, ship, and may has the most. Thank you for the help I'll update you in a few months of what I get
So I found someone is selling a Jon boat, and I found a small of pitting on the bottom exterior of the boat, I ask about it, he said some wood was sitting on it. Do you think it’s still worth buying?
It would depend on how bad but pitting is corrosion and there could be a lot more you don't see.
@@mvboutdoors that’s what I’m nervous about.
Where the pitting was located, no holes were located from the inside of the boat itself.
@@carlos-luisluna5828 corrosion is just one of those things where it's near impossible to fix, so if you're looking for a platform to build a boat to keep for years I would probably stay away.
@@mvboutdoors ok. Thanks for the help.
@@carlos-luisluna5828 Yw, good luck in your search!
Most important with trailer is the wheel bearing
This is true!
I agree with the paperwork it took me through three boats to finally get one I can build
Yeah man, its nightmare to deal with, do not recommend!
I see a lot of boats like this for sale on facebook market place without titles and will not buy one without it. all kinds of excuses estate sale buy or what ever..went through this with a motor cycle years ago and will not do it again.
I got hit with paperwork nightmare.
Bought from an estate online auction
Found it there's no HIN plaque or manufacturer info on boat.
Ouch, I hope you are working it out. It's a genuine nightmare dealing with a untitled boat.
@@mvboutdoors what type of screws do you use for the floor screwing into the ribs ?
I mean dang! You're a gem of information. Thank you.
It depends on your state laws but here all you need is a bill of sale for the trailer, and from what I've seen that's pretty common
@@mvboutdoors I’m texas, you?
@@brock2387 Ohio here

What is the length of the boat this video?
This is a 1648, 16' long by 48" wide floor width.
Actually if it’s 14 feet or under all you need is a bill of sale in Ohio I’m getting a boat tomorrow and had to look into if I need a title or not.
Yes that is true, under 14-feet is the law for boats needing a title in Ohio.
In Texas we just need a bill of sale
Must be nice! haha
You should have way more subscribers and views. Great info
#1 Make sure boat is stable for your needs...
14' boat 30" wide on bottom is not stable for lake fishing.
This is true, make sure you're buying the right sized boat!
Too many of those skinny jon boats around and jon boats where not designed to handle the waves they were made for rivers and calm water with the idea that one could get out on the bank without getting your feet wet.
1. Make sure the boat and trailer have a title 2. Makes sure it's not a pile of shit 3. Get a good deal 4. Have fun
trailer title is important in just about every state. boat title is not done in every state. you cant force a non title state to make one special for you. doesnt mean you shouldnt buy that boat.
@@mvboutdoors my bad...didnt realize it was ohio only channel.
@@shanediggers2156 Yeah they make it difficult for us here, we're surrounded by non-titling states too which makes it extra fun.
GREAT video!!!!!!
Example:
Bought a tin mfg. and sold in Arkansas.
Ahhh man, that's a rough one. Probably my biggest fear for buying fiberglass. Thanks for sharing, hope this helps someone.
Great info, many thanks!
Very welcome, I hope this helps people avoid the same mistakes I made!
Let’s get it .. congrats on 1k brother .. how can I message you about a question and picture I got a boat I just need to know if I’m getting a good deal
Thanks man! You can hit me up on Instagram.
Avoid riveted boats. Stick to welded hulls. There's plenty of them out there and they're not likely to leak. Rivets loosen over time promoting leaks.
Stunned that you would pay even $1 for a no title boat. Unless parting it out maybe. Or scrap Al.
Agree completely, the title was supposed to be included but the seller lied. Lessons learned for sure.
You can`t even scrap it without a title.
Or.. have someone in Vermont title and register the boat, then "sell" it to you. you would get the boat, And a new title
Great tips, thanks!
Great video. I'm also in ohio. Actually just beginning to look for my first ever boat. Barely even been in a boat. Been crushing it fishing from shore this summer. But options are super limited where I can fish here in akron. Most spots near by are fished out or littered badly. This was a great beginner video of what to watch out for. Really hoping to to get burned when I finally narrow down my decision.
It really opens up your fishing options, just take your time but be quick when you see something you like. Don't make concessions, the right boat will come along.
You have the same vehicles in your driveway as I do. Same color Durango and my Ram is black .
And I'm from O H I O and I'm looking to buy a Jon boat . Hahaaa , crazy , Thanks .

you can't file for a lost title like you can for a car? was easy for my car. just filed for it and it go sent to my address.
It's a mess in Ohio, had to go through the court system. Worked out in the end but I don't recommend it!

Hey useful information.
With all those problems you mentioned about that boat it probably would have been cheaper to just buy a new one
In the end it was still much cheaper to fix it up than buy a new one. New boat prices are pretty nutty right now.
Pressure treated lumber contains copper = rusts aluminium 🤯... I can't thank you enough 😲

that title stuff sucks, i move from a state that doesn't require a title or registration for the boat trailer to a state that does. new state refused to acknowledge that i actually owned the trailer.
It gets a bit ridiculous in my opinion,
In Ohio A title is required for all powered boats 14 feet or longer and outboard motors of 10 or more horsepower. Anything smaller, get a bill of sale with a witness! Lol
Thanks man!
You guys have some weird rules with outboards too eh? I've got a 60's seagull with an Ohio reg sticker on it...
It's ridiculous honestly, they say its to deter theft but I don't buy that.
