I actually did voice work for this game years ago, I’m quite a few of those little boys you can encounter playing football, selling newspapers etc… besides me holding a certain bias towards it, I truly think this game has one of the most beautiful worlds to explore of all time. So rich and full of life with great accuracy too.

My biggest problem was the antialiasing. With AC games, AA always costs a ton of resources and if it’s not enabled, the jaggies are obnoxious. Once I was able to enable the AA, this game was a work of art.

My main gripe with syndicate, Unity as well. Is that they introduced these tasks to pull off during assassination missions.
      • Light this pile of fireworks to distract the guards.
      • Turn off the power to disable the alarms.
      • etc.
But the problem is these were almost impossible to achieve without breaking stealth and getting swarmed. I can’t even count how many times I had to restart that bank of London mission because I wanted to do it stealthily. In the end I just gave up and fought through them all.

I always love the Victorian Era, so seeing Assassin's Creed Syndicate being praised really makes me happy.
I also love the fast paced combat. Especially the multikills. It really feels badass!
I always wondered how The AC Series would look like if it gets closer to the Modern Time. And I'm happy that they gave it a chance.
I only wish there would be an AC Game set in the 1920's or perhaps in the World Wars (Despite the small tease of gameplay from Syndicate & Unity)!

My favorite thing about AC: Syndicate was that there was something for everyone. The stealth was fun and satisfying, the combat was Arkham like and the boxing arena made it stand out even more. The side missions weren’t so copy and paste. The grapple made getting around the map quicker and more fun instead of slowing down the pace. The detective side missions were my personal favorite and I couldn’t get enough. On top of all the the voice acting was really well done. Although I wasn’t attached to the main story and present day stuff at all, the things I listed made me want to keep playing and see where it went. Also Jake you’re the reason I played it, you replied to me on twitter suggesting I play it so thanks to you and Gameranx!

The detective missions were impressive. They are the main reason I started to buy Sherlock Holmes Consulting detective board games. The mission where a crate fell on a guy's head was unforgettable. It is one of the parts of classic ACs that we probably never see again in any modern AC games. (Like hunting and base building from AC3, ship gameplay from Black Flag. and in general, social stealth, dense cities, modern world parkour and templars)

I've been waiting for Syndicate to get the appreciation it deserves. Probably, rightly overlooked by gamers at the time from the big AC burnout days but luckily for me, I gave it a go at the time it released. I hadn't been huge on AC up until then but Syndicate to me was close to perfect. It's characters, it's writing, setting, story, atmosphere were & still are so enjoyable & engaging. I really wish they'd give this one next-gen update or something. Higher-res textures, better lighting, better particles etc. but more importantly, add some more combat animations. One of my only complaints of Syndicate is the extremely repetitive combat animations. Minus that, i really do think Syndicate is & was the peak of AC. Everything before & after that (whilst still enjoyable) hasn't left me with the lasting impression that Syndicate did.

Syndicate felt like the AC game where they finally somewhat perfected the movement they’d been trying to capture for years and you truly felt like a stalker of the city, an ASSASSIN! And as much as I did enjoy Origins and somewhat Odyssey and Valhalla, I felt very jarred and almost disappointed that Ubisoft basically finally got the penultimate build for what it is to be an assassin, and then just completely gutted the concept for “hack n’ slash” type gameplay. I honestly felt like the heart of AC was torn out, set to the side, and replaced with….. well I don’t quite know actually. However what I do know, is that since Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed just doesn’t feel like Assassin’s Creed.

What? Better movement? It literally downgrades the system from unity. Then it just says fuck it and gives you a tool that completely removes any reason to use the parkour system.
Syndicate is not underrated. Sure it can be fun, but there’s a reason why it didn’t do very well. Unity is leagues better, If you read reviews from the time the only major criticism of unity was the bugs and general unplayableness that came with them the core game and it’s systems were actually pretty good, while syndicate had a lot of problems with gameplay and repetitive map design that felt more like the modern ac games then the old ones.

The setting is amazing, the engine is amazing, the stealth is literally perfect… and besides, I feel like it’s a game that contains fun for everyone, like street races, mysteries, parkour (although it’s not too great in this game), sorta GTA style carriages, and so on, really made it seem like Ubisoft tried to do their best on making a great game. Other than that, Jacob and Evie were realistic characters and their dynamic was spot on. It was the first I platinumed, too. Really a bummer hardly anybody liked this game.

The release was VERY buggy. Characters disappearing or shifting forms/faces, the vehicles were a freaking mess (and that's being polite), the missions could soft-block for no apparent reason, the secondary characters had a mind of themselves once you interacted with them, and the list could go on for a long time.
To add insult to injury, the story was so detached from previous AC titles, and with a TERRIBLE twist that I'm not going to spoil at the end (a complete wtf moment that really ruined the experience), that the game was barely salvageable even narratively.
Guns were good though, when they worked, that wasn't often enough.

I’ve played ALL AC games and I gotta say Syndicate is the most polished AC game I’ve ever played, also out of all AC games Syndicate is the most modern on year 1860s with trains, cars, steel boats, it looks amazingly real on graphics, making me feel like I’m in London 1865.
Another reason why Syndicate is the most polished AC because it came out between after Unity and before new AC trilogy, so it has both older AC style gameplay and new AC style of skills leveling system. This game is really unique and rare.
Unity is a masterpiece game but Syndicate is more fluent than Unity imo. Faster pace and fast combat, smooth stealth, easy to play.

Unity and Syndicate are one of the games I randomly reinstall just to have fun and freerun. I know people talk about how they love Brotherhood and II. I love all the AC games. But there's something special about the early gen 8 games. The perfect mix of old and new. Control with assistance to ensure fluidity. People have this false assumption that the first 4 games were the best because you had "more control" over your character.
They don't define "more control" and make an assumption that clunkiness is better. It isn't. The freerunning is so smooth and still has some control. More than the recent 3 titles. And I know you can crouch in the older games but it's clunky. And combat in Syndicate reflects the time period: a brawler style.
I also like how Syndicate experimented with RPG elements. More elements than Unity. It's sad how people pretended to hate Syndicate and then Ubisoft misunderstood why and changed the franchise for the worse.
And I started with the first AC. I still love Syndicate.
EDIT: I also agree with this video: the atmosphere of the people and city is unmatched. People play instruments in parks. People are hustling and bustling to their jobs. There's so much detail more than the first 4.

I absolutely LOVED Syndicate!!! I totally agree that it is one of the most underrated AC games out there. After the crowded to the point of frustration streets of Paris (which was one of my least favorite) I was thrilled to be in London! I still have this game & throw it in once in a while to replay. The worst part is having to delete your old game to start a new one but that doesn't take away from an AWESOME game. One of my favorite things about AC (any AC) is the history & stories. I don't really want cars or anything "modern" since video games are my escape from reality. I like the horses, carriages, swords & knives. I've never been a gun fan & only used them to accomplish requirements & played mostly as Evie - unless I was forced to play as Jacob. But seriously one of my all time favorites.

Personally stealth in this game comes right after Unity for me, it has everything: from throwable smoke bombs to berserk darts, sleep darts, guns, last known location and even the new voltaic bomb, if only they'd let you equip 2 items at once like in Unity, though it didn't bother me that much tbh. Unity did have more tools that allowed you to change the environment to your advantage, like the money pouch and cherry bomb, which made it more complete, but Syndicate is definetily ahead of some other games in the series

Odyssey was great too but a bit big w/ a lot of filler. I enjoyed the ship & wildlife. The story was decent but not Origins good. Rent them & see for yourself if you like them then buy them if you do or return them if you don't. But don't take other people's opinions on it. Especially if you like RPGs & open worlds. And before that, I had finished each and every one of the main iterations, including Rogue. Syndicate was one I loved, as it was certainly a jump from Unity in terms of quality. Plus, I have a soft spot for Victorian era England, because of all the great books written during that era, with many being among my absolute favorites. Just beat the game a second time yesterday, including the Jack the Ripper DLC. For years I have listened to people complain about this one, so I felt like I needed to go back to live this experience again and I am pleased I did so. This game is definitely one of the best AC games ever made. To me, it's even better than Unity by a large margin and I think many people don't see that. It has some of the most memorable villains like Crawford Starrick, Pearl, and Maxwell Roth. My only complaint is that Ubisoft should have invested more time in the story and added more layers to those three villains instead of making 8 targets to keep the 9-sequence tradition. Jacob's interactions with Pearl and Maxwell could have yielded some of the best moments in the franchise and Evie's rivalry with Thorne could have been executed in a better manner. Despite my complaints, I still enjoyed my time in this one better than I did in Unity, which I have replayed recently as well.

My favourite AC so far. For me, Syndicate 1st, Origins 2nd and AC 2 3rd set up my podium. 1868 London is by all means astonishing and, as a big time history fan, being able to interact with historical characters like Dickens, Darwin, Graham Bell, Marx, Queen Victoria, Nightingale, young Conan Doyle, MI5 Churchill, Mr and Mrs Disraeli (and Desmond, of course :D), Gladstone, etc. simply turned the experience into something unforgettable. Walking the halls in Buckingham Palace, Infiltrating the Tower of London, taking a stroll across St James's Park or climbing up the Big Ben (to name but a few iconic spots) really made my day. Also, the DLC about Jack the Ripper was hands down the best in the AC saga. And last but not least, the Frye brothers, whose voice acting was spot on and whose costumes and outfits a delight for the senses. What else can I say? SImply, my favourite (though not perfect) AC up to date.

I loved this game. After finishing AC 4 Black flag I wasn't able to get new gen for a while and when I was I missed rogue and unity then saw origins was coming out and I saw syndicate and everything about it seemed amazing, asthetic, gameplay, story, and the tie backs to previous games. Came out of AC 4 and having played 3 and before then getting to go to the kenway manner in a story mission and listen to characters talk about the prior protagonists and their impact on the world was dope. Everything in this game was great even the side activities. It really captured what I loved about AC 4. You have a side to it that is more assassins themed and centered with evie then you have one more focused on the bottom line and end result while being a gang leader in jacob. It's a great story and It was a lovely send off to the original AC game play. I actually miss it a lot compared to the new games. A++ with this one Ubi.

Outside of Ezio trilogy Syndicate is my favorite AC game. It had the best stealth system imo, decent fighting system (I think Unity has the best and most complex fighting system), a great setting which is like the secondary "character" in these games and the Frye twins are pretty fun (I preferred Evie for better stealth and not being goofy like her brother). Plus we got to meet great characters, the grappling hook was fun and I always enjoyed having a bad organization with a central bad guy and us having to solve who he and his members are(like in AC2 and Origins). Only think I didn't care for was the Jack the Ripper DLC. It had so much potential but they went weird with it and just didn't make sense.

To me AC unity is the most underrated one, everyone hates on it soooo much and it's actually amazing, such a great atmosphere and the mechanics are so streamlined and at the top of their game. It actually bothers me that so many people hate on it, when its one of the best ones, I don't like syndicate because of the grey dark muddy colors didn't really love the setting but maybe I gotta give it another try

Why does it bother you that people hate on it? Do you not understand the concept that people don't have to like the same things as you? Cause I played through unity and I had to force myself to finish it. The setting was boring, the combat is not great and Arno is the cure to insomnia. Oh I'm sorry I guess I'm just another one of those people that just "hates on it"

I loved Unity. Some of the most atmospheric gameplay I've ever experienced, especially in the Catacombs/underground sections of the map. The Dead Kings DLC was fun too, with the dark atmosphere and the blunderbuss with a axe bayonet, lol. The theme was great, and co-op made perfect sense for the game. The French Revolution is also a favorite period of history of mine.

Shame about the unfair difficulty and broken enemy AI though.
It’s tue most frustrating AC game being so artificially and deliberately difficult, not challenging; difficult.

I love the assassin's creed franchise sice I discovered it with black flag, and to me Syndicate is the best representation of what assassin's creed should be/could have been, gameplay speaking, running around in London was one of the best experiences I've ever had with th franchise, and I'm kinda sad that this game is so underrated. I often come back to it to wander in london or replay missions because It was so satisfying to see all of the possibilities you had, and i still hope Ubisoft will bring back this kind of gameplay.

I always think Odyssey is criminally underrated just because of how much it gets slated! Mini map of the entire of Greece (more or less) and combat/stealth and general gameplay has no weak points IMHO. Not to mention Kassandra being the most likeable main character, getting to fight mythical creatures and the incredible DLC's it has. I've played every assassins creed game and it's by far my favourite!

Can confirm this game is underrated. Just recently 100% this game and ALL DLC. (took me a while) The main story is good, and atmosphere and surroundings are great. Had to take a long break at one point, and getting all collectibles can feel like a chore. But main missions and DLC content like Dreadful Crimes and Jack the Ripper is very well scripted, narrated and executed. Like he said, not the best AC, but absolutely worth checking out! Cheers!

i think it's hilarious that some people think the horse and wagon gameplay can be dull or boring, I remember playing RDR2 and being excited to drive the wagons!
After watching this video, I definitely want to revisit Odyssey... I never had the chance to play syndicate but this video is very compelling - maybe I'll play it one day.

This game was so unexpectedly good. Jacob and Evie were fun polar opposite characters and seeing them come together at the end was awesome. London during the industrial revolution was so fun to explore and some of the missions with alternate endings and objectives were so cool. I was genuinely sad when I finished this game.

Honestly, it's probably one of my favorites. Black Flag had an amazing story and game play, Valhalla is just beautiful and Origins was almost perfect: but Syndicate made me feel like a modern assassin while stayed both open world and linear. I regret not finishing it, but after all these years, might gladly start from the beginning and finally beat it.

I agree that "Syndicate" is overlooked and underated but the combat is disgustingly button mashy and a complete diversion from the status quo. The setting of Victorian London is gorgeous but to me the game feels to "gamey" with the way NPC's interact and how you engage with house and carriage and the Grapple hook feature, I passed due to the performance of Unity but came back when AC: Origins Dropped I adore that game.
I feel the more underrated gem is AC: Rogue as it's just past off as "tHe oNE tHAt haD a teMPlar" when it's a interesting take on the franchise adds to the "American Revolution" storyline of Connor/Haytham and links to Unity.

I feel like Jake is a massive Assassin's Creed fan (mostly the old ones) and his entire world at one point revolved around them (I was like that) while Falcon is just passive about them, finding them on the ok-ok line but has more important things than a videogame series
