I had a ‘64 that looked identical back in 1970. BRG, wire wheels. Rebuilt the engine, new rear seal, clutch,etc. Your video brought back great memories. Wish I still had it
My first car was a TR4A IRS and my second car was a TR4. Loved them!!!
I rebuilt a 1980 TR7 4-banger several years ago. Will be finishing that project up soon...

I left the UK 30 years ago in a TR4a. I drove it through Europe as far as Rhodes? , Greece. Back up and started a new life in Sweden. I did have to sell it after a few years though. Good news is my Dads just given me his Magrnta TR6 which will go very well with my mk1 cooper s.
But I think the TR4 may be my favorite classic.

Where was he demonstrating arrogance that you could point me to? On the fake mechanic bit I presume you mean he isn’t an actual certified mechanic? Not that that would mean he doesn’t know his stuff, I think he does. Technically you might be right there.

@@michaelwittmann4898 We’re on arrogance though, where was he arrogant? If he isn’t formally trained then possibly he can’t claim to be a mechanic but I’m not sure that he does make that claim, for sure it doesn’t mean he doesn’t know his stuff. So that one is to bed then I think. So just the arrogance to deal with and then we’ll move onto the ego (not sure where he demonstrated that you see).

I had a 64 TR4 in college. 64-67. Tons of fun, and plenty of problems, too many to list, but the worst one was that the brake hydraulic line ran across the firewall right above the battery. Battery acid apparently squirting out of the vents ate a hole in it. Fortunately I lost my brakes pulling into the parking lot of a bar in Denver after a day of aggressive driving in the mountains. The guy with me grabbed the emergency brake lever and no damage was done. Whew!
Oh yeah, the electrical wiring also burned up when the same guy accidentally kicked some relay under the dash and shorted out the system. Something about a positive ground. Anyway a new wiring harness.
Still the most fun car I ever owned.
Ahhhh memories.....I raced a stripped down modified 66 TR4A in SCCA during the early 70s.... modified the original engine back in the day with the 88mm wet cylinders ....those engines really were "work horses" and suspension "tough" etc....definitely changed the electrical from Lucas to AC Delco. I swapped out the carbs for SU-H6's. Won a couple races over 3 years....such fun cars
My personal favrorite British sports car! never get tired of this body design , From TR4 to TR4A with a 6 cylinder with the racing stripe going across the front bonnet perfection !!!!! & Ant Anstead great job on this one & as usual Mike is nowhere to be found. Thanks for awesome video on this British classic sports car.
4A has the same engine. 5 and 6 were straight six
yes TR5/TR250 is the TR4A body with the horizontal stripe and 6 inline.
@@RyanPatrickOHara It was a mid year model in 1967 & in the states it was introduced as only a TR250.
This was my first car when I was 16 in 1970. Exactly the same however mine was maroon with steel wheels. Head gasket blew the first week. Clutch went out shortly after. Part of the bell housing decided to break off at the connection to the engine, standard rust on the rear wings (because there's no liner protecting them). I remember using black electric tape to patch up the leather seats. Remember, I was 16 with NO MONEY! Practically everything I learned about cars, I learned while working on that one. The strange thing is, I LOVED IT! Why? Where else could a 16-year-old pick up a 6-year-old convertible for $400? Sold it 20 months later for $785 when I went off to college. I don't look back because now I have the car I dreamed of when I was driving the Triumph. A Lotus Elan!
Pulling a 6.7L Turbo Cummins(600kg+) using a forklift with crane attachment is monumental. I used to pull small engines like that with my bare hands(sometimes with the head on).

In 1972 a guy I worked with had a brand new TR6. Always something going wrong. Final straw was he rolled up the driver side window and it fell on the ground and shattered.

Great cars those old TR Triumphs
More fun than great. Nimble and fun to drive. Rust and electrical issues hold them a bit short of greatness. But with upgrades...a friend swapped in a Motorola alternator for the unreliable Lucas unit in his MG Midget.

Greetings! I bought one of these new in 1964 and it was fun until it broke down. Everything in the electrical system failed , some more than once. At that time the starter was over $200 which would be about $2,000 in today's money. Wheel bearings were a constant problem as well. Xmsn rebuild was required, as well. Best of luck!
Although he skipped over it, the old valve seats aren't designed for unleaded fuels. IF you're going to pull the engine, common practice is to replace stock valve seals with hardened ones, otherwise, you'll end up pulling the engine later anyway to do it. Might be ok if ur just doing short drives a few times a month. More than that, it's a ticking time bomb.
That's an old wives tale. Tetra ethyl lead is a not a lubricant. It is a neuro toxin with no safe level of exposure. That's why its banned. Besides, all valve seats are hardened.
had a 64 tr4 in highschool..this was in the 80s..so it was an antique for sure..always regretted selling it for 900 dollars now that they are worth 20 to 30 grand.....wish I still had the car.....let me say this,I normally parked it on a hill and rolled it off to get it to start..it was a serious POS but looked brand new,a terrible terrible you are lucky if it made it to town and back car,but I loved the thing....LOL..one day driving down a highway,I smelled something...you drove these using your nose..yes,its over heating....something burning....stopped...the wiring harnass.....burning like a fuse around the engine....took me 3 days to rewire the thing but I got it done.Because it was such a horrible car,I sold it.....one of the bigger mistakes of my life.

Have to agree with the cleaning of the Engine helping you know it,, I Have never done any thing this big, but did a few PUCH Maxi mopeds,, know the engine in my sleep just from stripping and cleaning

....!'ve owned my TR3A for 52 years...I noticed 2 small things not mentioned....1/ a common source of rear oil leakage is also the cap on the cam bearing journal, installed like a reverse frost plug, it should be then 'bunged' in the center so it expands and fits tight enough not to ever leak..........and 2/ The taper pin on the clutch throwout bearing fork should always be checked for fatigue, or simply replaced, as a caution (if it shears, you have a big issue to deal with) The connection to the shaft can be reinforced with the addition of a through bolt.....There is a fellow who raced Morgans (same engine) who modded the rear bearing cap slightly so that he was able to replace ALL the bearings with the engine in the car...I had it printed out, but with a little research I'm sure you could find it....John (west coast, Can.)

TR 5 in UK. Always loved Triumphs , had a TR3A and two TR7 Cons . Loved them all .
Nice job. The only part puzzling me is the voltage polarity conversion that did not include work on the starter motor. How possible is it to change from positive ground to negative ground and not replace the starter motor?

@michaelwittman48982, he is a great mechanic. You have obviously never worked on or restored an old car. His technique, explanations and fabrication of special tools to do jobs is excellent. Perhaps your predudice against him for whatever reason has blinded you to this?

i had a tr4 in college and the kids tried to lift it and put in an academic bldg as a joke unfortunately the steering lock short circuited and started it on fire imagine my surprise when the kids ran into my dorm and yelled your car is on fire

I have to agree with some other responses... Seems a waste to go to that extent and not remove the head, the big end and crank caps to check things inside. The oil pump should have at least been been inspected, too. All that can be done with the engine in the car, but is so much easier when it's out. And if any work needs to be done, will need to pull the engine anyway.
My '62 TR4 is sitting in storage, currently, but already have all the bits to fully rebuild the motor from top to bottom and give the car a bit more oomph: 89mm piston & sleeves, larger valves, Weber DCOEs, mild cam, yada, yada.
Next project... Maybe a TR3 Beta or a Rover V8 in a TR6... Unless I find an Italia.
I really like how he mostly uses hand tools instead of power and air tools.

it disgusted me so much that he didn't take the time to clean it properly i felt heart pain when he started to assembly it... this guy is a monster and should be in jail also because he didn't inspect the engine for good..
No sealant for the oil pan gasket?
No sealant on any of the gaskets. Especially the rear main bearing cap to block. This engine will leak oil severely.

Nothing was done to the engine's "Insides." Rear seal was replaced, new flywheel and clutch, and an exterior clean and paint. Not really "restoration" or "repair."

In 1967, I had one just like this, when in USAF stationed in Cape Cod. It was Great fun, but I had no use for it when I was reassigned to Alaska. I bought 1968 VW Square back. In 1971, I bought a new Datsun 240Z...in 1972 my ex-wife got it. Then something...better, a 1969 Pontiac Judge, and then even better, a 1970 Volvo 1800E. I'm not bragging, just lucky. Want to guess what was next? A Chevy Malibu...business car. (Ugh)
yes, i took part in that on Cape Cod. I drove a, '57 356A on its circuit. It was with the Cape Cod sports car club. I was their from 1980 till they locked the gate due to world terrorism causing more security and the new base commanders not enthusiast about sports cars. I think a lot of that USAF base racing had to do with General Curtist Lemay air force commander whom like the sport of home town racing. It is a part of America''s grass roots sport car heritage. I was lucky to be a part of it.
Such a simple engine. Why didn't you take the head off and regrind the valves? Was it because you didn't want to upset the 'rope' seals under liners? One thing the engine is not the exactly the same as the Fergie tractor, same tree different branch.
I have a MGB, I wonder how different would be to drive a TR4.

Honestly I don't hate this show...both mechanics know what they're doing, it just Mike that's annoying and ruins the show.

SU's... And it was actually a "tractor" engine used in the Ferguson... 🤣🤣🤣🤭 At least he realised his mistake... And Stromberg Carbs were always a nightmare! Those rubber diaphragms failed... Over and over...
The good thing about the diaphragms was when the carburetor failed, the diaphragms made it obvious what the problem was. No guesswork needed there!

In the full tv episode this clown was explaining the difference between a dynamo and an alternator and just showed what an “expert” he is. A dynamo generates direct current which is fed to an external electro/mechanical regulator. An alternator, as the name suggests, produces alternating current which is rectified and regulated by electronics built into the alternator. He is so knowledgeable he once even called a water pump impeller a fan. This pair are well suited.
I was a Triumph mechanic , this is nothing more than showbiz, hardly a restoration. .
If you lift the engine and go this far you would at least pull the the head and the end caps.Absolute bullshit.
We called this a gasoline overhaul when I worked in a shop. Waste of time.
Can't believe he semi restored the engine and didn't take the head off or seem to check the mains and big ends. He has no idea about the real condition of that engine at all. Note even a compression test. Has no idea about the real internal state, is it coked up, are the valves sealing properly, are the rings stuck (very common on engines that have sat for a while), etc etc. If you've got an engine of tht age and you don't check inernally you are wasting your time.
This is a TV rebuild, note you did not see condition of rear main bearing. The alum flywheel on a street TR defeats the ease of driving ie pulling away at not much above idle. Cosmetics for the camera, if you have a TR motor there are real channels to learn the how and why of a proper rebuild. I enjoy the show but take all the mechanical advice with a large dose of salt. It's a "reality" show, not a "how to" show.
I’ll state the obvious that when watching the ‘new’ WD it’s so obvious that it’s just made for TV entertainment and 🐜 will not be doing any of the real work himself. With Edd you knew that he at least did some of the work. Mike of course was the same annoying tw@t in both versions.

The problem when Wheeler Dealers came to the US was that they insisted on buying and fixing the same vehicles they thought everybody wanted in Europe. Nobody HERE gave a rip about a DIESEL powered Land Rover, for example. The show was great, but not enough of what they were working on was of interest here. They also failed to realize that cars bought with a lot of modifications/ updates would have brought more money with those mods left in instead of spending a ton of time and money removing them and going back stock. Americans don’t do stock, boys! Americans are more into hot rods than restoration.
This guy may know his stuff but his way of ex planing is so childish he is a complete turn off , Come Back Ed soon , No wonder this new guy is a complete TURN OFF. Nothing personal .
