Ashcroft isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He doesn’t write songs for the majority. Urban hymns is popular because of one song that caught on. It’s my favourite song. But Ashcroft to me is music. I’ve listened to him in my best times and my worst. You can’t listen to him and not hear or feel the lyrics. Whether they resonate is down to the individual. But to me personally. He is the most important songwriter of my life and the reason I started playing music myself. A special talent. But an acquired one. RA forever.
@@bodyblow Chris is probably out now mate. Was 9 years ago. I agree though. Never listened to Ashcroft and wished he was “pretty” he looks like a bloke. Who writes timeless works of art. 🤷♂️😂
somebody commented about the lyric "dont think im lying im flying" not being a great lyric. I love that lyric because i belive it is a "fuck you to the british music press". when the verve first came out with a storm in heaven ashcroft gave some off the wall interviews. he was into transcedental meditation and one of the things he said ia that he believed he could fly through meditation. He may not have meant it literally and he may not still believe it. However the music press used to like to use the comments and called him mad richard. So by the time lucky man came out and the verve were proving they were one of the great british bands of all time i think richard was saying who's flying now motherfuckers come on! you have to look at lyrics in their context. people say the beatles were great lyrycists but you could point to "i wanna hold your hand" or "yellow submarine" and say they were rubbish which is far from true.
That is a good point. Also, it doesn't come across best when the artist refers to their own songs as timeless. Still, an artist must get a rush when a crowd sings along to their song a decade or two after it was released.

I know it's only *FIVE* dislikes but i just can't understand what's to dislike? People who don't like the Verve wouldn't really be here so what exactly are the Verve and RA's fans really disliking? His clothes? Hairstyle? Choice of guitar? His singing off a bit? *WHAT* lol, I'm serious though i can't wrap my brain cell around what's *NOT* to like lol.. Takes all kinds i guess (sure those are his lyrics lol)
INDIGO STATION the only thing that can be only be possible is people coming home drunk and listening to him on the headphones pissed and clicking dislike by accident. I cannot see why you would click this video and dislike.......
All songs mean different things to different people. However, the songs he is singing in this clip are attached to one of the best selling albums in British history. Maybe they'd mean more to you if they were heard on the original album. I'm not sure. The Beatles sang "I want to hold your hand" and brought the world to their knees. Who knows
You mean Urban Hymns? Ive got it, and these songs are some of the best from it in my opinion. I'm not so sure that they mean more when heard as part of an album, but I get your point. But shouldnt great songs be great in their own right, and stand alone without any context needed?
"People said people of my generation weren't gonna write songs that would last and live and be timeless and I think we've proved that wrong tonight. Cheers."
stevedgolfer I can't help but think it's not tuned but it's a 12 string, bloody hard to tune cos all it takes is one string to be a tiny bit off and this is the result
people call him a genius, he talks at the start about his own songs being "timeless" - I like some of his stuff and sure he has a good voice, but genius?? really?? lyrics like "let me sleep tonight / make it all seem fine" "dont think I'm lying/ I'm flying" etc are hardly "genius". Dare I say it, they're mediocre at best. And the actual music is nothing too special, just busker-style mid-tempo guitar chords. I'm not saying he's shit, but I just can't see what all the adulation is about.
Just a thought, a great songwriter does not have to use complicated chords or clever words to create a great song, for me it is all about the mood and the feeling, the connection to something within yourself. Music is subjective, one mans genius is another mans busker. Personally I love RA's work.

I would argue this is also the case with some of the older rock bands that are considered "timeless."
