Fun facts: Rachel Bloom, who pitched the idea of the show and was one of the main writers verified the character with a medical proffesional to make sure she had chosen the right one, and changed the one she thought Rebeca had (I think Bipolar) to BPD.
My all time favorite show. From a therapist myself. And musician.
I would love it if you were able to continue doing reactions for the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series as a whole! It wouldn't have to be every episode, but it would add so much value and insight to be able to hear your take as a professional in the field on a fun show focusing on mental health.
I think what you said about the DSM is actually a quite popular opinion. Professionals should always recognize the limitations of the "tools" they use.
I love that you acknowledged the flaws in the DSM-5 and the element of subjectivity in diagnosing!
When I worked for a state funded community service board (high volume, severe and persistent mental illness) the state required so much paperwork intakes were an hour at least and that was all typing (pages of intake, TX plan, safety plan) we were typing the whole time and notation was always considered collaborative and done during sesson, no time provided in between sessions. That said, many therapists would arrange their desks like this but we had a choice, I had mine off to the side so I could sit face to face with the client when I had opportunity.
I'm with you on the subjectivity of diagnosing clients. I often recommend psychological testing if it seems like it would be helpful. Interestingly, I do wonder if this is a place where AI will start to take more of a front seat.
Love this show! Loved your take on this song
Oooo interesting....I thought the yellow walls might be a reference to the story The Yellow Wallpaper
Okay, some context for the song here. I really hope you read this (I know it's long, sorry!) because this show is very complex and watching songs out of context will always lead to important information being overlooked or misinterpreted.
This song takes place shortly after Rebecca had a suicide attempt, and Rebecca is in a state close to mania (I don't know if it's actually a manic episode, since I don't know enough about that to judge) which is why she is putting all of this pressure on a diagnosis to Fix Everything Immediately. The doctor comments on this immediately when Rebecca steps into his office, pointing out that she is very elated and asking her to calm down before he gives the actual diagnosis. I think the hopeful nature of the song is very realistic to Rebecca's experience in that moment, but it is also setting up that she is not right about a lot of things. Life after having a diagnosis will still be hard and it won't make the symptoms go away. Like you said, there are signs within the song that Rebecca is overly optimistic. This is definitely intentional!
After this song, everything crashes down when Rebecca hears the diagnosis is BPD and googles it, learning it is a "difficult disorder"/stigmatised disorder that many therapists refuse to treat. This sends Rebecca into a spiral for a bit and she even denies having the disorder (thinking it must be misdiagnosed again). It isn't until after a while that she goes back to her therapist and learns to have a more healthy relationship with her diagnosis.
So this show shows many aspects of getting a diagnosis: the positive and hopeful, the scary and upsetting, and eventually the balance of learning to see it as a tool to help you understand yourself. Only watching this one song gives an unbalanced view, because it only views one of those many aspects addressed in the show.
This is also why I don't mind the show making light of hearing voices, because it shows Rebecca's mental state in the moment. She is unable to see how scary it would be to hear voices because she is in this manic state. The show doesn't suggest that actually hearing voices would be easy or fun.
EDIT: Yeah! Like you said in your editorial note, this show shows both sides of splitting in regard to Rebecca's reaction to her diagnosis! That's the word I was looking for!
I appreciate Crazy Ex-Girlfriend because I feel seen, but it also makes me laugh, and if I can laugh at what is hurting me, it can’t beat me. ❤
So ... Children are deranged ? It's like that, it's over: You are splitting. ?
Everyone does when you don't know yet the thing you wanna do and end up doing it...
Starting by new job, new school, etc
You are not cut out to work in the psyche field...
As a therapist who is supposed to know what they are talking about you are supposed to help the person approach things reasonably:
NOT MEDICATE PEOPLE AT ALL COST
telling them, no, it's over !
you don't know yet how to approach things reasonably ??? At your age ??? (Teen maybe, young adult maybe)
it's sad.. but hey, you have to accept it, THIS IS WHO YOU ARE...
that's it, that's a fact..., the only fix is "medications" full of secondary effect...
Be a lab rat that's who you are
trust me, im paid to prescribe from that lab... :)
Time is money chop chop next person !
Not approaching things appropriately is not a mental illness, it's fixable by learning.
Mental illness is not anything and everything.
It's a shame.
