To be clear, the only use of ai in Now And Then was to remove the piano accompaniment from John Lennon’s voice. Very little has been done to that tape after isolating his voice, the less than stellar quality of his singing is testimony to that. That being said, I’m not sure what the future of AI for commercial applications would be. The Now and Then single uses AI developed by Peter Jackson to extract and enhance elements from existing recordings rather than producing new data, so it’ll be interesting to hear how that sounds later this week after it was used to such an extent in the Get Back documentary.
OMFG!!! I love you guys. I’ve been wanting to do AI harmonies and vocals to Beatle-ize their solo careers to get the band back together and this gives me hope.
Is been so long since i heard something so beautiful. I am a really big fan of The Beatles. This is so gorgeous! I just love this song, the real last one from the Beatles Era😍This is trully one of their best ones, and Paul's voice......
My only gripe is that it is NOT them - it’s not the Beatles - its two guys doing a cover - a very good cover and beautifully arranged and produced - but it’s just basically a tribute band and that’s cool but it’s not Paul and it’s not the Beatles at all - nice work
Def not the Beatles. And isn't that really the best way to do it? It might be presumptuous for us to actually try and make a new Beatles song. So instead we're merely COVERING a lost Beatles song and sweetening the pot with some AI Paul. Thanks for watching.
As an Electrical Engineer who took a graduate level course in Artificial Intelligence in 1992, I question whether the general public really understands what is meant by 'AI.' This is a fantastic video that sheds some light into the dark mysterious domain that has become AI over 30 years later. I learned something about how AI vocal models are created from Nahuel's discussion. Thank you! I have wondered for months how this is done. I read somewhere today, within UA-cam comments, that The Beatles embraced new technology. I think about the feedback intro in "I Feel Fine," backwards vocals in "Rain," tape loops in "Tomorrow Never Knows," and the Moog Synthesizer prevalent on Abbey Road. AI seems like a natural evolution for artists who want to preserve the creativity of The Beatles. Unfortunately, with two members of the Greatest Band of All Time gone, and the other two in their 80s, keeping the magic alive demands technology. I greatly appreciate Brett's "Almost Beatles Songs." This channel stretches The Beatles creativity beyond 1970 and into the 21st Century. As far as those purists who hate the concept, consider the vocal cords as a complex instrument in the same way one does a guitar, a bass, a drum, or any other instrument. All instruments require tuning and I considering modeling vocals no different. As young musicians, we all attempted to mimic the magic sounds of The Beatles. At one time, the holy grail for those who actually studied the finer points of The Beatles production was purchasing the right equipment, adjusting the volume, bass, treble, reverb etc. to the exact levels that created the magic. Yet the vocals were always out of reach. The many ethical and even possibly legal challenges of A.I. arise. Still, impersonators such as Rich Little made a living not attempting to steal identities but to celebrate them as mimics. They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Maybe all should look at AI in this light? I see this kind of AI as a new art form as much as a technology.
@@kathrynmcmorrow7170 I can empathize. In fact, as you read my response think about what we all lost in 1980, 2001, and 2016. Examine "Now and Then" from a purely analytical perspective. Then think about 'soul consciousness.' The grand achievement in "Now and Then" was the A.I. separation of Lennon's vocal from the piano and room noise. Was this a 'great' composition that stands up with his best? That is a matter of personal taste. I prefer "Strawberry Fields" or "All You Need Is Love." Yet the quality of filtering was simply amazing. Now for my criticism. I was actually angered by the production. Harrison's contribution seemed to be missing, even with McCartney's attempt to mimic the slide as a tribute. It was a nice gesture, but in my opinion he failed to capture Harrison's 'soul.' That was obviously not an A.I. artifact. The strings, orchestrated by Giles Martin, resembled the Spector treatment rather than his father's tasteful approach. Isn't it odd that McCartney would allow such after his outspoken distaste for Spector's heavy handed production? Again, this was not an A.I. artifact as real strings were used. The guitars from I assume 1994 wound up buried in the McCartney-Martin mix. Whether Harrison provided backing vocals in 1994 is up for conjecture as I have yet to hear them. What I do hear are processed vocals from "Because" and "Here There and Everywhere." People might call this A.I. but I consider it sampling a la the early days of rap music or The Beatles "Love" album. I totally get the concept of 'soul consciousness.' I was a George Harrison fan even before I knew he was a member of The Beatles. While my religious experience does not align with his exact chosen path, he was a kind of my guru from 1976 to the present. I am anything but a musicologist or producer. I have tinkered with remixing since the early 1990s to please my own ears. Yet, if a novice like me can pick out production issues with "Now and Then" I have to assume that there are professionals that could, dare I say, do a better job of production than McCartney-Giles Martin without the provenance? There are also those students of the five individuals who I argue understand the individual souls better than even their former bandmates. How many books for example has Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr read on John Lennon covering the post-breakup era? This opens intriguing possibilities for those who enjoy The Beatles music, but no longer listen because they have heard it all. There are students of each individual in The Beatles. Some are right here with @almostbeatlessongs. They have an ear and what I consider a superior musicological understanding - even to the colloquialisms John, Paul, George, and Ringo used. Again, the instrument in music that has been so difficult to reproduce is the vocal cord (analytical). Believe me, I understand the aspects of the soul in music. The soul won't be the same creating the AI music, but there might be those with talent who can capture a glimpse of the spirit and thus create something new. As long as it is not portrayed as "The Beatles" I don't see a problem.
Personally, I think enough is enough. The last song, Now & Then was at least using the voices of the Beatles as AI was only used to seperate Johns Voice and the piano. I have listened to the Beatles since I was six years old (66 Now) so am a fan but it is time to close the book imo.
Wow! This is awesome! I've always thought that in the next 50 years, we will see a revival of long lost icons come back on stage to sing their songs and new music tracks... West world style.
As with previous Almost Beatles productions, this is lovely. For me the fact that the starting point is actual Beatle melody and lyrics is what makes it work and makes me smile. Well done all of you! My only caveat is that at the beginning of the video you say The Beatles have used AI. I guess it’s debatable whether Peter Jackson’s MAL is AI in the way many people think of AI, but in light of the confusion in the media and in the minds of many fans that AI was used to create some part of Now And Then when the only use was to isolate a vocal from a piano. There was no John vocal created by AI, unlike Paul’s vocal in Pillow For My Head. Anyroad, great stuff and look forward to future creations/reimaginings!
Thanks! I’ve heard that Paul used AI to de-age his own voice for Now and Then. Can anyone confirm? Also, for us AI is fair game so long as we’re transparent regarding its use.
@@almostbeatlessongsI’d be interested too to hear if de-aging used. So far I’ve heard nothing about that for Now And Then. When Paul and Ringo are joining on the chorusy part it’s seems to me to be their current age voices. Otherwise the bgs are adapted from Beatles tracks a la “Love” soundtrack. Let me know what u find out if anything. Thanks again.
Okay, time to nip this in the bud. Here's the legal standpoint: 1) using A.I. in an effort to finish a song for PERSONAL use(I.E. Listening/educational purposes/sharing and etc) is perfectly fine and LEGAL. 2) As long as you don't try to use someone's likeness for PROFIT or personal gain this too is perfectly legal. 3) Give credit were credit is do, and keep it non profit, and you should be fine. ------------------------------------------------------- Now from a fans personal view: Frankly I love what you have done and encourage you to continue doing what you're doing. From my perspective, you are saving lost/almost lost/forgotten/almost forgotten gems and breathing new life into them and sharing it with the whole world without asking for anything else in return. So on behalf of the fans, we thank you and God bless you, Sir. I know for a fact that Paul isn't upset about this; he's okay with it 100%. He himself appreciates what you have done here and hopes you keep doing what you're doing.
It’s just amazing. As always you advance their music and not merely cover it. That is a deep concept throughout the history of music, regardless of the tool being used… and if the machines come to get us, at least we can be listening to great music while they do it 😉
A nicely respectful effort. Really does sound like Paul in the 70's / 80's. I also love the "Train" style drum riff but I dont think Ringo would have played such an "American" style riff in his drummings. However, it fits rather well, so.......... Nicely done, guys. Nicely done ! But, keep the respect in place. Thats what makes it "good". . .
Exactly, I was about to write a comment about that drumming. It's very beautiful and the song sounds great with it, but it just doesn't sound like a Beatles or McCartney song. Great song nonetheless!
As hobby, yes. As a proper Beatles song, no. Olivia Harrison said it best when asked about a hologram of George like Tupac’s. "No, I don't think I could handle that," she says. "I think that would be unkind and unfair to him too. He needs to be where he is, y'know -- I'm sure he's occupied."
I get the technology and don't really have an issue with it being used this way. But as a lifelong Beatles fan (since the 60s) my opinion on this mix is that although the voice is unmistakeably McCartney, the whole feel of the song is not. He would have thrown in some key changes or even a quirky non matching middle 8 etc. The guitar doesn't work for me in this instance as great as it is. A combination of the Challens piano (which you can get on VST) and even an early Moog sound along with a less fussy guitar piece would have been more complimentary imv. Good job nonetheless but to me it sounds like Macca singing a Coldplay song.
The most beautiful song that I've heard in recent memory, even better that it sounds like Paul - thanks for doing it! (Doesn't really sound like a Beatles track, just an amazing Paul solo song.) If the terminator apocalypse is the price we pay for such AI-generated art, maybe it's worth it??
Well.. I've been a musician / engineer and some time producer for over 40 years. I love your stuff. I understand pretty exactly how it works and I give my own 100% approval for what it's worth. I 've been teaching music since I was about 20. I'm 67 now, so I'm a 1st gen. Beatles fan from the UK. I'm just so happy to be alive and healthy in 2023 (hopefully a while more too). What you and your friends and associates are doing brings a great smile to my face. PS. I've worked with A.I on remastering movies and music since 2018. Just a hobby now though. Great good luck and fortune to you all !!! Barty
As long as you are only using AI for isolation I'll be on board but if anyone goes any further then it will be a disaster...also how did you get a hold of the nagra reels?
It has that genuine Beatles feel because the spark comes directly from them. All AI has done is polish it off and a darned good job you guys have made of it. However I’d love to hear the track reworked by real Paul. It’s way too good to leave on the cutting room floor so to speak.
damn that's insane. thanks. can we download it somewhere? TBH i hate when AI is used to WRITE songs, but when it's used to mimic voices and complete projects as here, i think it's phenomenal
This was inspiring. I've always recorded, when possible, my improvisations, alone and in jammy situations and i can positively say that there are around two hundred songs that could be worked on and although I'm no Beatle, they could have been good for any decent pop ock act. Only managed a half a dozen complete demos (they're on YT) for lack of time and gear.
As someone who's very interested in AI development, I'd say it's good to experiment with it however I'd rather have a good isolation of the original recording (which will eventually be possible as AI isolation will become better and the fact there's people remastering and remixing the get back sessions using all the bootlegs and more) or a cover version with your new vocals
As a music producer and huge Beatles fan.. NICE JOB!! The only thing that could be changed is the style of drums.. Ringo would never do that style of drumming 50 years ago but he might do it today?
Beautiful song, great work on both ends. I’m not against using AI for finishing and/or putting together songs that could have been Beatles songs. The “Beatles” AI version of “Watching Rainbows” is now one of my favorite songs to listen to. “Pillow for Your Head” is just as good I think.
I’ve never seen that picture of George, Paul, Linda, and George Martin in Abbey Road. It must have been in early 1970 after John had left the band, and the other three Beatles got back in the studio to do some overdubs for the ‘Let it Be’ album. Great shot!
I think retaining the more stripped back vibe would have been a better choice, but I do appreciate the string arrangements. Really neat to see what AI can be capable of.
I think it would have taken the same amount of time. 🙂Anyway, no judgments. Just surprised. It's what my ear latched onto right away as the nicest detail of Paul's melodic idea.@@almostbeatlessongs
Yes, once again you've astounded me! Truly a special video and a jaw dropping collaboration. More to come one can hope ... A thought: Could AI be used to make new Beatles albums using the best songs of each solo work bringing all the boys together to play sing and harmonize, for one small example on Wings Wildlife song where John might say drop the too cutesy "aminals" which might've made the song more acceptable and therefore take its rightful place as one of the early environmental protest songs. And so on ad infinitum. But what about the royalties?
I think what you did here is no different than what Phil Spector did when he took the tapes from the abandoned Get Back Sessions and created the Let It Be album. The Beatles were in the process of breaking up, they recorded Abbey Road and were essentially done as a group, and there was this mass of tapes for Spector to sift through and make sense of. Of course, Spector was a genius who used the analog technology of the time, and he put the album together without consulting the Beatles, especially Paul, who said he really would have liked to have been in the loop. What could Spector and George Martin done with those tapes if they had digital technology and AI? A well done, tasteful offering. Thank you very much for this. In this case, you're right, there's nothing wrong with AI if it's used as a tool, as an extension for your own creativity. It's when you just push the button and let it create for itself, or you use it to copy and manipulate images for the sake of confusion, where it becomes messy. You used AI the way Spector and Martin used their soundboard fifty years ago.
The thought that in an alternative universe, The Beatles are still together and still creating magic. I think using AI to a certain respectful degree allows us to dream a little that this great band is still going and all 4 members are still with us. 😎🎸🎵❤️
End of the day, we respond to music that resonates with us - with our human sensibilities. That's usually a finely-tuned balance of familiar and somewhat unfamiliar musical ideas, blended with a performance that expresses some human emotion. The Beatles often hit the perfect blend. If AI can accomplish the same resonance, I'll gladly listen to it. But so far, it only provides the superficial bits of the blend (sonic textures, familiar harmonies & melodic motifs). AI still requires heavy human curation, to make music that resonates (in this case, the original composition). We'll see how it evolves.

The Now and Then single uses AI developed by Peter Jackson to extract and enhance elements from existing recordings rather than producing new data, so it’ll be interesting to hear how that sounds later this week after it was used to such an extent in the Get Back documentary.
Amazing work! Congratulations! Well worth the effort.
Yes! Thank you!
OMFG!!! I love you guys. I’ve been wanting to do AI harmonies and vocals to Beatle-ize their solo careers to get the band back together and this gives me hope.
Right on, fellow Beatles fan. Thanks for watching.
Is been so long since i heard something so beautiful. I am a really big fan of The Beatles. This is so gorgeous! I just love this song, the real last one from the Beatles Era😍This is trully one of their best ones, and Paul's voice......
Thank you. Of course, we're only covering a lost Beatles song. They would have taken it to another level.
OMG! Beautiful!!!! Thank you so much!!! A peace of art!!!!!
Thanks!
That’s good stuff mate
Thank YOU for expanding on these ideas. So cool.
I hate the whole idea. What don't you get about soul consciousness? Omg! Let it go! Most Beatles fans I know hated even "Now and Then."
@@kathrynmcmorrow7170 I can empathize. In fact, as you read my response think about what we all lost in 1980, 2001, and 2016. Examine "Now and Then" from a purely analytical perspective. Then think about 'soul consciousness.'
The grand achievement in "Now and Then" was the A.I. separation of Lennon's vocal from the piano and room noise.
Beautiful. Regrettably, Paul hasn't repeated since the end of the 70s or early 80s. Well done. 👏👏
Thanks for listening
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks!
It almost sounds like what a collab between Paul McCartney and Nick Drake, and I'm all for it! Great job.
Thanks so much.
Beautiful work
Thank you very much!
That was really nice! Love the lonely feeling and instrumentation.
Thanks so much!
Wow! This is awesome! I've always thought that in the next 50 years, we will see a revival of long lost icons come back on stage to sing their songs and new music tracks... West world style.
Glad you like. Thanks for watching!
Magnificent! Love it!
Many thanks!
Really beautiful. Thank you guys.
Thank you too!
Absolutely stunning new song ❤
Glad you like. Even Paul's throwaway melodies from this era are pretty strong.
Wow, that was amazing 🥰.
Thanks!
Any chance we can get a tab of what you played btw? Would love to learn this tune while I learn fingerpicking. Thank you for all your work 🙌🏽
Okay, time to nip this in the bud.
Here's the legal standpoint:
1) using A.I. in an effort to finish a song for PERSONAL use(I.E. Listening/educational purposes/sharing and etc) is perfectly fine and LEGAL.
2) As long as you don't try to use someone's likeness for PROFIT or personal gain this too is perfectly legal.
3) Give credit were credit is do, and keep it non profit, and you should be fine.
-------------------------------------------------------
Now from a fans personal view:
Frankly I love what you have done and encourage you to continue doing what you're doing.
That is a deep concept throughout the history of music, regardless of the tool being used… and if the machines come to get us, at least we can be listening to great music while they do it 😉
Right on. Glad u like. Thx for watching.
Beautiful, thank you 👋💓👍
Woah!!!! This is beautiful. You're right, it's a tool. I think we all win because of this technology.
My brother!
Thats what makes it "good".
.
.
Thanks for listening!
Exactly, I was about to write a comment about that drumming. It's very beautiful and the song sounds great with it, but it just doesn't sound like a Beatles or McCartney song. Great song nonetheless!
Loved it! More please! 😊
Coming up!
now that is impressive 😀🎸
this was quite lovely
Right on. Thanks again for watching.
I love this new direction that the series is going and I hope that you guys continue to use ai to complete these lost fragments!
Cool. Thanks!
7:39 listen to the song here
….so who’d own the copyright on this?! 🤷🏽♂️. Love the channel.
We're covering a Paul McCartney/Beatles jam. We did the arrangement, though. Thanks for watching.
I agree with you and Olivia. 🙂
Top stuff. Another banger.
Thanks!
When you work with beautiful material, and you work so masterfully, the result can only be phenomenal. Thank you for this.
Wow, thank you, @loosilu!
So glad you enjoyed. Thanks!
Barty
Thanks so much for the warm words. Bless.
As long as you are only using AI for isolation I'll be on board but if anyone goes any further then it will be a disaster...also how did you get a hold of the nagra reels?
We have all the ACTUAL Beatles music we need. Leave it alone.
Yes….I agree, leave Beatles music alone. Using A.I is very interesting, but don’t mess with anymore Beatles songs.
No more Beatles covers from the world? That's a big ask.
Thanks!
This was inspiring. I've always recorded, when possible, my improvisations, alone and in jammy situations and i can positively say that there are around two hundred songs that could be worked on and although I'm no Beatle, they could have been good for any decent pop
ock act. Only managed a half a dozen complete demos (they're on YT) for lack of time and gear.
Thank you!
Strange, amazing times we are living in. Going to get moreso as we keep going.
My first impulse was: no, you can't do that. But after I heard the song, you got me.
Damn! That man’s got a great Paul impression!
Hear that, Nahuel? Thanks for watching!
Well done! 👍
Thank you so much!
As a music producer and huge Beatles fan.. NICE JOB!! The only thing that could be changed is the style of drums.. Ringo would never do that style of drumming 50 years ago but he might do it today?
Agree completely 👍🏻
Heard, chef. Thanks again for watching.
Well done, gentlemen!
O-M-G!!! Brilliant and Amazing👍I Love it ❤
-regardless of the A.I., its been done in very good taste and very classy Beatles sound.
Glad you like it!
Thanks!
Amazing!
Amazing. The finished product sounds like son of “Jenny Wren” from Chaos and Creation!
Interesting!
Thanks for bringing to life this beautiful beautiful song.🤗
Thanks for listening
I must admit that it's spectacular indeed.
Thanks for the kind words.
Really surprised you didn't include the nicest part of the melody where it leaps up on "for your head."
Sigh. Only so many hours in a day. Thanks for watching!
I think it would have taken the same amount of time. 🙂Anyway, no judgments. Just surprised. It's what my ear latched onto right away as the nicest detail of Paul's melodic idea.@@almostbeatlessongs
Well done!!
Thanks!
Excellent!
Cheat codes for an endless stream of new Beatles songs. What is to hate? I cannot hate the idea of new Beatles songs.
Thanks for your feedback and ideas.
Beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes. Did you send it to Paul?
Doh! Do you have his cell?
Yes. Thanks for your feedback.
Oh wow - this is stunning really stunning
Ah, thanks so much.
Very nice!
Great job. It seems that parts of the original working jam were used for Paul's song "Every Night" from his first solo album.
Yeah, Pillow def grew out of Every Night. Very cool to see that.
Really interesting. As long as nobody is conning the public, this is creatively interesting.
Yes! Exactly!
The thought that in an alternative universe, The Beatles are still together and still creating magic. I think using AI to a certain respectful degree allows us to dream a little that this great band is still going and all 4 members are still with us. 😎🎸🎵❤️
Thanks so much.
Aren't you allowed to dream without this ungainly crutch?
is this song available for download? I love the melody and song in general, I don't care how it was created, I think is brilliant!!
Art is art. Thanks for watching.
Really great work.
Thanks!
