Proteins were first identified in the 19th century and consist of amino acids. In the 1950s, protein supplements were developed to enable optimal muscle growth. Since sugars and fats have become demonized, more and more people follow high-protein diets. Although proteins are important and high-protein diets can be healthy, there are some medical cases where protein supplements seem to have had detrimental effects on the body.
The first case covers a Tiktoker who followed a trend of dry-scooping. Here, protein powder are consumed without mixing it with water. However, her protein supplement also contained caffeine and, as a result, she experienced a heart attack. On a broader scope, plant-based protein powders have often been shown to contain heavy metals or traces of plastic. The overconsumption of red meat is also associated with a higher risk to develop various cancers.
The second case discusses a medical case where the overconsumption of protein supplements led to a buildup of ammonia in the body. In this case, the affected person suffered from urea cycle disorder which means that high protein diets can led to increased ammonia concentration in the blood. Similarly, people with kidney disease should also be a bit more careful when it comes to protein supplements.
Proteins are incredibly important to us. Especially when we get older, a higher protein intake combined with sports might help to curb age-related muscle loss!

Small correction, there is no protein in a pre-workout powder, it's just stimulants and/or nitric oxide increasing compounds (to increase pump), sometimes nooptropics (for focus), taken on an empty stomach (protein hinders this, hence used in post-workout formulas), and her skin was itchy from beta-alanine (an endurance compound) i've never seen a protein product that includes caffeine and beta-alanine etc together in all my years using such things, it was most definitely just a standard high stim pre-workout she likely took too much of.

@@maliko.8692 No, but looking at it, at 8 grams of protein per serving, about a third of what is in 1 scoop of whey protein, it makes zero sense that they even include it in the formula because it's not moving the needle, but it's at least in such a low amount it wouldn't effect the absorbability of the other compounds much.

this is why i work with my drs. i have been on a high protein diet for a few years now where the goal is to get at least 80 grams to a max of 120 grams a day. with this combined with a lot of physical therapy i have gradually traded excess fat in favor of rebuilding muscles that were severely weakened after 2 major injuries. i still have a long way to recovering full use of these parts of my body but it is working.

The tiktok influencer you talked about took pre-workout powder not pre-workout protein powder. Theres no such thing as "pre-workout protein powder". The symptoms described are the symtoms caused when someone takes too much caffeine but guess what... Protein powder doesnt contain caffeine; pre-workout powder does.
To summarize, her symptoms werent caused by protein at all as preworkout powder does not contain any protein at all. Her symptoms were caused by too much caffeine.

There is scientific consensus what a healthy diet looks like: Mostly plants, whole foods, very low animal products (or none), no or very low highly processed foods and of course alot of variation in what you eat.
If you don't cook yourself, that's probably the healthiest first step you can take.
