  • NetGear Nighthawk LTE Hotspot? Definitely. Need an Internet hotspot for when you're out and about or on the road? Do you find the idea of high-speed access from anywhere appealing? Of course you do, and secure access via your own hotspot too? What's not to like!
    Tech expert Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tests out the new Netgear Nighthawk 4G/LTE Mobile Hotspot from AT&T Wireless and finds it quite impressive. A best-in-class product, it offers a surprising number of features and capabilities, but don't get too confused: It doesn't offer 5G, nor does any product at this point: 5G won't even begin to be deployed until mid-to-late 2019.
    Tests include speed tests while driving 80mph through Wyoming and parked in the middle of nowhere in Montana, along with an exploration of many of its other features.

    You CAN plug a CAT5 cable into it and run it to another device. I run mine to a 4-port Hub so I can hardwire my PC's.

      If your router supports USB Modem or Android tethering, then you probably don't need this fairly expensive device. If you router is OpenWRT compatible then you can flash it with custom firmware to enable USB Modem or Android tethering. ;)

    ANYONE know why I'm getting slow speeds??
    I have a Nighthawk M1 connected to a Cisco Micro booster and getting 12 down and 4 up? The bars keep fluctuating from 1 to 4! I had AT&T reset the booster and it's been 6 hours. I only have 2 devices connected within 10 feet. Shouldn't need a router for 2 device's? This is my first time setting up and have not purchased yet. I'm in LA a nd a tower is about 1/4 mile away! Simm is AT&T no limit, no throttling, no cap!
    Battery is slow charging. 5hrs from 25% to 75%.

      I'm sorry to say this, but you have to have a certain service that has this device, in order to use the device. It also comes with a SIM card, a battery, and more. You can also charge your devices with it, and, use the USB type-c to charge the router, and the ethernet cable is to plug into another router. And you can manage your stuff, like username, passwords, and other than the router's functions using an app early. By the way, you can use the app to raffle, or Google Play. Also, it has 2.4 J, and five J. It also has a guest mode, where you can set it up, when guests come to your house, you can set that up, and it will let the guests get onto your guest Wi-Fi. So yeah. You will need to know if plan to do that everything with it. Sorry. Oh yeah I forgot to mention, it also has feet where you can hook an antenna to it. That way, if your getting poor speed At your home, or getting a 4-speed while you're traveling and your art bank, or other cars and vehicles, you can connect an external antenna, so yeah. It also comes with an SD card. At least folder. Runs off of that CPU thing you were talking about. sorry, I mean he was talking about. Are you planning on buying one? And if you are, then where do you want to get it from?

      A hotspot tied to the AT&T network is not going to be comparable to a third-party device like the Sapphire. Still, the Sapphire can't perform magic; it still has to connect to a network so it can work. It just uses a 'guest' access of some sort. ATT will never under any condition change the NAT type to anything other than strict. What they will do is spend hours lying to you about how they don't know what you are talking about, and bounce you from tech to tech till you give up.
      So here is what you do, and you better be ready to commit. You call them, and tell them open your NAT to open, and as soon as they start the run around you hit them with this. Ok, well then cancel my service and close my account on all my devices and I will just go over to VERISON because they know what NAT type is. BAM fixed in 10 minutes.

      Rural Internet is tough. I've tried these sort of hotspots and they've worked well, but they are dependent on a good cellular signal and if you're going to stream Netflix for some binge watching, you're going to go through a LOT of data. I'd talk to your cellular provider and see what they suggest. Good luck, rural's tough.

      The biggest problem with using something like the Netgear for a streaming TV channel or online gaming is that those consume a huge amount of bandwidth and it would end up being a very expensive solution. Hey Dave, I have owned this Nighthawk in the U.S. for over a year. First, the early version had a different chip that was not Band 14 (FirstNET) capable. I live in a rural area with weak cellular options and zero broadband availability (excluding satellite). I average around 200Gb per month of usage. There are some problems with it. 1) It is not enterprise quality. My first Nighthawk failed after 5 months. AT&T replaced it quickly.2) Firmware: AT&T controls the firmware. The end user does not have any options of when it's installed or changed.3) Power: If heavy usage, especially via Ethernet, the USB-C is incapable of providing enough power. It supplements the increased power demand from the battery. If the battery is removed and it needs more power for the demand, it will shut off and restart.4) Battery: The battery is quite good until it's not. They swell and short out. With all that said, it is a great device for the "casual" user. For mobile use, it is affordable compared to the high quality devices. The Snap Dragon chip is good but wished they used the Sierra Wireless version capable of LTE-A (CAT 12 speeds). It's performs better with external antenna's. All in all, it's ok but not great. Appreciate the review and quality of your videos. Keep it up.

      What the heck are you talking about?

    • @indystormjay
      @indystormjay 6 років тому +1

      Dave Taylor 5000 milliamp battery, it does support ethernet in/out, and at&t has a 500gb plan for $100 a month. How would you use that up in an hour? Not a bad video otherwise though. And are you the same Dave Taylor who wrote the book creating cool web pages with html?

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  6 років тому +5

      I get the specs directly from AT&T, so it's possible they have changed things since the unit was sent to me, and data plans are constantly being changed. The plan I had was 5GB. 500GB is way better :-) And yeah, that was me a long, long time ago who wrote Creating Cool Web Pages with HTML.

    This Video is miss leading. It is not 5G at all. Its known as LTE advanced or 4GX or 4G+ depending on how it is marketed. It uses the same frequency bands as all other 4G LTE networks unlike 5G, which uses 6GHz Band and 15GHz band (in testing), Also it's a totally new specification.
    5000 Mega Amp Hour battery? Face Palm..... You want to power a house with that box? Seriously dude, Get the Facts and Terminology right before you release your video!

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  5 років тому +4

      Seriously, dude, AT&T calls it a Nighthawk 5G, that's what I'm going to call it too. And as for the battery, well, you're not the first to point out my gaffe. Que sera, sera. Learn to have some tolerance for those of us actually producing content here on UA-cam. Oh, and one final thing. It's "misleading", not "miss leading" :-)

      Dave Taylor I mean you put 5g in the tittle for views so yeah lol. There is a difference from 5g and 5g evolution

    I tuned out @ 1:09 , when he said it has a 5000 "mega" amp battery. FALSE. It's milliamp. Go back and educate yourself before doing reviews.

      Glad you couldn't spend the 30 seconds it would have taken to read other comments and my mea culpa on making that obvious and easily ignored mistake. And enjoy all the other perfect videos you watch here on UA-cam. Because you never make mistakes and none of the other videos you watch ever have mistakes in 'em, right? (rolls eyes)

    • @Boobtube.
      @Boobtube. 5 років тому +3

      If you know you "misspoke" why don't you correct the video with a annotation ? You really expect me to sit and read ALL your comments? Do you read all the comments on every video you watch? Hmm. As far as being "easily ignored" mistake, I say If you expect the people to respect your "review" of a product, you should at least be educated enough on the product to talk about it correctly. What good is a review that gives false information? Would you watch a review on a product and expect to hear things that are false? Don't try and degrade my knowledge of electricity and electronics. (rolls eyes)

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  5 років тому +3

      Degrade your knowledge of electricity? Are you Ben Franklin? lol. Just take a deep breath and walk away, my friend. There's really nothing to be so stressed about here...

    • @Boobtube.
      @Boobtube. 5 років тому +3

      I'm not stressed at all. Just trying to help you in your quest of making Better review videos. .. Seems like your the one stressed. Do you call all people with knowledge about electricity Ben Franklin?? Sounds childish to me. Your the one who should just walk away............ from doing reviews. Leave it to the "Pros"

      This guy is a toad. He needs to educate himself on the meaning of Cat16 and why speeds actually vary.

  • @raus_mit_Islam
    @raus_mit_Islam 4 роки тому

    You shoud test the speed against OTHER devices, like a cheap Samsung smartphone. Without COMPARISON yr review is worthless!!!

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  4 роки тому

      That's a good idea but there are so many variables affecting the performance of an individual device, including variations in connectivity over time, that I'm not sure how beneficial that would be. Plus it would require me having a half-dozen devices which I didn't have when AT&T loaned me the Nighthawk for review. FYI.
