Notice how the ‘roughest’ areas in Newcastle, people were still friendly and still had a small amount of pride in where they live. In the South, we would just complain and make things worse 😑
The Geordies are really so friendliest and they are always proud of the toon. Every person I met down South criticises the UK or just says they hate it.
@@theSalukie as a Geordie, thank you! Byker is really rough though xx
@@theSalukie Southerners are not friendly people, I was shocked just how rude they are when I went down south
@Harold Tooter it used to be :P I'm from over there and live over here now and it seems all the nut cases moved over here when I did :P
Howay now, come and enjoy the great life and we will give laughs and funs :D
I'm from neighbouring city, Sunderland, and I can confirm that the area featured in your video is indeed one of the most desolated places on Earth.
YOU LAUGHED AT US WHEN WE WERE DOWN BUT WHO THE FUCK IS LAUGHING NOW
@@user-of4dj3jc4m Eh? What are you on about and why the mouthy shouting little boy?
You cannit talk, whole of Sunderland is a shithole 😂
And it's still better than dog shit Sunderland 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sunderland is worse
This is what happens when an area, formerly in full employment, has its heart ripped out but never receives the promised alternatives to the traditional heavy industries. As time passes, and unemployment rises, the entire face of the area changes. This is compounded by the council placing known trouble-makers in very cheap-to-rent housing. As the lass in the film stated correctly, there is a great community spirit in Byker amongst the long-standing residents but it must be a nightmare to have to deal with as many smack-headed zombies too. The Byker Wall has won an unfathomable amount of awards for its architecture; it's a rabbit warren imo.
Thanks for the insightful comment. Are you from the area?
I live in St. Anthony's, Walker but I'm not from here. My grandparents lived in this area and we'd visit frequently, so I knew the area when the shipyards were in full swing and Shields Rd was a respectable shopping area. It's a pity to see what it's become. Your film's great. 💖👍
Absolutely! Took less than 40 years for the population to decline by 80%. I’m not sure what the population is now but there doesn’t look like there is any capacity to increase it.
@@Spacetwerp thank you Lindsay, glad you liked it 😌
Well from what I understand industrial areas like Newcastle, Birmingham, Hull, etc. were grim and miserable as fuck even when they were at their height
iv lived in byker for 3 year now, you actually walked past my house next to dalton cresent lol, its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. full of families and most of the people in the area are lovely, you get a few idiots about but you get those everywhere.
Yes, that was my impression with most of these areas. Bad reputation and the people are lovely
Thank you 🙏
I've met some good ppl in Byker.
I live in NE Illinois, in the "Midwest" of the USA. It seems to me far too many people look at the bad, & don't recognise the good in things, places, people. That's definitely how it is here in Northern Illinois, including Chicago. So I can relate to what is being said here. And I too was in Iraq. I can tell you, if you're in a strange & dangerous place, you're lucky to have some "graduates" of Chicago with you, 'cause we've been through hard times and rough places, we can endure. I'll wager that's how it is with you men & your families. Cheers!
This place used to be rough, I was at the Uni back in 2002/2003 and did part-time security. I remember being at a construction site in Byker for a couple of weeks or so.. the days were fine but it was the night time when things got real dodgy, lots of odd/strange/funny characters would stop by and sometimes say hello, sometimes shout at you and sometimes even try and sell you drugs.... teenagers were a major nuisance, they would come and set fire to stuff whenever they could and throw stones, bottles, etc at you when you tried to confront them. You would hear various sounds or noises of people fighting, cursing .. shouting, police sirens, etc throughout the night every night of the week but weekend nights were the most challanging.
Thanks for sharing that story mate.
Challenging
used to be?
If you think Byker is rough you have led a sheltered life.
"I think people who've got the money get dealt with better, because money talks... get out the bush!" 🤣
Haha yeah the mam was hilarious
Very educational. Thank you very much guys…I wonder what makes Byker a ‘rough’ area, people seemed so pleasant. These videos really help people wishing to get an idea of Newcastle before they move. Great work. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, you're welcome. The people in Newcastle are lovely in every part of it, wealthy or "rough".
Outside of Sunderland.
"This is byker church where all the locals pray"!!!! hahahahahaha
Haha allegedly
Pray for a better future maybe? It's a great old church that should be restored
🤣
🤣🤣🤣
if anyone's watching I promise this area is not that rough. like growing up in benwell and then fenham, and going over to a mates in byker after school, i never thought byker was ever that bad. sorry but "deprived" areas in the north will not ever be as bad as the south, knife crime hasn't taken hold as much up here
Depends on who you are/what might happen to you...
But, London is 100% way more hardcore next to Newcastle.
It's a white 'working class' area, rough and ready but essentially safe if you mind your own business. It can't be compared to other cities in the UK that have been over-whelmed with immigrants with their knife culture.
give it 10 years itll be the same
i thought that, the areas with similar housing to this in other english cities dont tend to house white people

One of the friendliest places I've ever lived....
That train station was epic. Awesome Salukie as always!

Elswick/Benwell are just as rough
Definitely 👏👏👏👏
It's not a competition
@@markphelan6992 not a competition but it’s the truth 🤷🏽♂️
Everyone from the Bermuda Triangle that is Elswick/Benwell is related. Everyone has at least 1000 cousins & the gene pool is pretty shallow & muddy.

When he said "Is this a road?" are where the old roads/Terraces with houses used to go.that`s why bits of cobbles have been left to show through.
thats interesting, didnt know that!
Used to live over the road (over the rail tracks) from the Morrisons at the beginning of the video. Lovely neighborhood and never had any issues! But now I’m freaking wondering where in earth this £40/week flat is! 😂
Five thousand other pp are thinking the same! Yeah, its easy to knock: imho good and bad in all places, met some good folk in Byker.
Im from USA the fact ur walking around with those expensive cameras and there isn’t trash and delapadated buildings everywhere means it ain’t a hard neighborhood at all. In USA hood you’ll get robbed for that camera at gun point real quick, and might catch a stray bullet from a shootout. The abandoned train station would have had herion addict squatters. Y’all road men are soft as hell with their little pocket knives
I think you missed the point of this video. It's to show that even the rough neighborhoods aren't exactly rough, and the people are nice and still have a sense of community and pride in the place they live. It's not a competition about where it's more dangerous.
Mr usa its not all that bad compared with other places in the world but not much chance of being shot when the British public have no way to get guns that a meant to kill ppl our police dont even use them for the most part so ask yourself why is usa city's not safe
@@richardsales6996 Idk I rather be shot then splashed with acid or stabbed to death that sounds way more of a painful way to get killed or injured
Being hard doesn't mean that you're high on crack, hiding behind a gun and robbing someone for your next fix

The wee girl was hilarious
Haha yeah so sweet
I know her lmao just found this
I am a housing officer in Byker and managed a patch there for 2 years now. It is rough and challenging at times however there is a real sense of community. If you want to speak to me about it I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have
My dad's a Newcastle housing officer too!
I used to live opposite your byker office when itvwas open a good few year back i used to watch ppl nick the flowers out of the rent office garden from me window lol
For the ladies: 3:06 You're welcome!
😂😂😂
LOL what about walker !?... back in the day iv had mates shot, stabbed, and beat to shit for nothing .. even had a neighbour have his throat slit and blood was gushing over his 3 year old daughter in her pram, my mother had to watch his daughter for him while the paramedics rushed him to hospital and he almost died ...all just for looking at a guy in his garden then another guy in walker stabbed his wife 11 times as she was cheating on him and he found out... we used to shoot smack heads with air rifles for fun out our bedroom windows lol
Some parts of the West Midlands make Byker look posh, also Newcastle is considered quite a safe city to live in the UK
Yes indeed it’s quite safe and the people are lovely
Try drinking on shields rd and trying using the atm after 20.00 and see how safe that is like not joking dont

Ofcourse you'd say that
should of visited the cumberland arms pub tynebar or byker farm thaz some nice people and social places in area lots of musicians and artists also . a very varied community lots of unique stories both good and bad a lot of economic struggles due to lack of work but all in all thaz lotta soul in the rubble ya just gotta dig
This was filmed back when the pubs were closed, could’ve been a nice visit like
Its a run down area. There's far worse all over the UK. If it was " rough" you wouldn't be walking through with your cameras for long.
I was born and raised in the Byker and walker area. I was a little dickhead and Spent most of my 20s in prison but it’s a crazy little area to live and some eye opening people. So much love and A brilliant community, don’t get on the wrong side of it though because they will eat you alive !
As an outsider I can see why people have a certain view of it, we bring it upon ourselves half the time, the youth of today In Byker and walker are fucking savage compared to when I was their age and we were little bastards. A dangerous place if you aren’t respectful but a very welcoming community if you cool.
i had a brief part in byker grove back in the day most was actually filmed in the west end of town at a building called the mitre nearer fenham ... not in Byker as lots thought
that’s crazy. Byker, byker, grove
The mitre these days is an Islamic community centre. Not that any new series of byker Grove would be filmed, ant and Dec bought the rights to stop tv stations showing re runs as they felt it was embarrassing to them now.
@@Justlookin958 the Mitre isn't really an islamic school. It was bought for that purpose but the Council had let the building dilapidate. Essentially the Baha Academy Group bought a bill they couldn't afford and have grafted hard but don't have the resource to aort the building. They cobtinue to occupy a largely dilapidated space and only make some use of it. So much red tape prevents them from really sorting the porperty out due to the buuldings listed status making progress more difficult and expensive.
Honestly, I live in heaton and I've never met anyone from Byker who wasn't sound. Aye it's a rough place but it's not like you're gonna get your face caved in just if you walk through. The mental thing about Byker is that it's slap in the middle of two fairly decent areas in Walker and Heaton, but the differences in average income, living quality, ect are night and day.
Yeah, I agree it just has a bad reputation but haven’t met anyone who wasn’t friendly and who didn’t give me their time of day from Byker.
Walker is a massive council estate there's not much wealth.
OMG Walker is 100% worse than Byker
Everyone I know who lives in Walker ends up dead, its a weird place (like a mini version of north London, with endless rows of shit and ugly housing).
@@dreamclaw00 Everyone who lives anywhere ends up dead. But I know what you mean. Walker is depressing, worked there for 20 years (Charles Parsons School). Folks are canny but it's bleak in parts. Byker has a bit more of a vibe.

Come on, mate: people treat you how you treat them. So next time you see one of those "foriegnors", try taking a leaf out of Saluki's book by saying hello and taking someone you never met before for a cuppa...
There's a first time for everything. You might just make a new friend, learn a new language or learn how it feels to have to escape a war zone leaving everything behind.
When people feel welcome they're going to behave nicer towards the people in the neighborhood that's welcomed them. When you get a cold, hostile reception you're not exactly going to give the locals roses, eh?

Hi @thesalukie
I’m from London to Newcastle I’m looking to move to Heaton.
I have been Newcastle so many times alone I just love the place in London it’s very depressing.
In Newcastle there is more trust and devotion.
in London I explained to a friend in London you will just be mugged off. Everything in London is a ripoff.
People laugh about me wanting to move up to Newcastle because they say it is a shit city a person calling it “benefit city”. I striked right back at the person Newcastle is one the best city I have been in the uk. People are more loyal in Newcastle it has a seaside around the corner and beautiful countryside.
I said Newcastle is better than London when it comes to support and socialising.
Some Londoners have no respect for Newcastle
I ment I’m planning on moving to Heaton (Newcastle)
Amazing Footage my friend!
Thank you Yoav :)
Hahaha it's not a dangerous hood unless you do something daft. I know the lass with the little girl, she's sound :) . Avondale house for Veterans isn't really a homeless hostel, it's self contained flats. she was talking about the ones off Shield's road like Byker Bridge Housing.
I ran into her a few times after filming this, she's really cool! And yeah i would agree, this is mostly to put it's bad reputation to the test
I done something daft once i played pool for a pint he thought he could take advantage of me because i was half cut and i still beat him and got a part of my ear bit off so dont tell me this place is save
I know the area pretty well (originally from Wallsend) and while there is a bit of fighting it's almost always lads setting themselves up as hard and being tested. If you mind your own business nobody will bother you. Generally.
The roughest hoods in the north east are actually normal hoods in like london...

What is a definition of the rough place? Dirty? Unwelcome? Chance to be murdered in few minutes? The Byker looks pretty civilized. Like a beautiful place compare to others.
I was expecting an actual hood. I wish American hoods look this lovely, check out my home town Birmingham Alabama 😂 it’s a fucking 3rd world country in half the city.
Yeah dude you can hardly call this a hood. Says a lot about the UK (or at least the Newcastle area)
No money no jobs no future shop lifting the whole place stinks weed hardly a place to bring on kids
The Satanic statues did it for me in Bham
Newcastle isn't rough mate, yes we have crime and such but it isn't rough! I have been in Byker, Jesmond, and loads
Yeah that’s the point lol
Jesmond is a luxury student area though
Jesmond your kidding right jesmond is posh central
Them kids are posh you can hear when saying the windows and one else would say windas. Thats why they went through day as they'd be scared at night
The council moving around problem tenants and families kinda dictate where the worst areas are .. left yem in 2010 and them days the cowgate estate always had the worst reputation. But like you say majority people living on council estates are fine its the smackheads and teenagers that cause all the bother
Lived here my whole life and everybody is sweet.
We would help you out no problem the people are salt of the earth here but fuck around and find out just like any close knit community in Britain. You give respect you get respect 👍
