For "formed pieces" can you fire the sunshine enamel without a flux then do a second firing with the flux so you don' need to worry about a wet spray affecting the unfired sunshine enamel?
I love your tutorials! I am teaching myself enameling now and I have learned so much from your videos. I am trying to make post/stud enameled earrings and keep melting the solder! I purchased special solder for this purpose from Thompson’s and using their enamels for torch firing (1000-2000 series). I would absolutely love a video from cool tools on this process. My artist vision keeps melting away!! Thanks and keep it up!
what is the reference of the product used on 7:28 minute please.? I would like to know before buying, I am confused with flux and enamel for the finishing layer...
Hello, Jan is using Medium Transparent Enamel. You can find the product here: www.cooltools.us/Medium-Enamel-Transparent-Golden-Clear-p/ent-104-1.htm If you are interested in all of the products used in this video, you can find the list below the video here: www.cooltools.us/Video-Painting-with-Ferro-Sunshine-Enamels-by-Jan-Harrell-s/2612.htm Hope this helps!
You can use acrylic medium, which will give it a more paint-like consistency over distilled water which creates more of a watercolor consistency. You can find it here: cooltools.us/collections/enameling-media/products/acrylic-medium-1-oz
Hi! Everything seen can be found on our website. Here's the link to surfactant: www.cooltools.us/Surfactant-Metal-Prep-for-Enameling-2-oz-p/enl-016.htm Thanks for watching!
came here hoping to find a novice-friendly intro for an aspiring at home DIY crafter.. *sheepish* but this wayy above my paygrade i know when i'm over my head! off topic: your hair is adorable ;)
Hi Tamara, we do not currently have a video on this technique; however Jan does explain how she gets the images on these pieces in the beginning of this video.
@Eva Nova Hi Eva, this video is to show painting with the Sunshine Enamels, not how to do the decal technique. Jan chose to use these pieces for examples. In the description of this video, you will see a link to all of the products used in this video. I hope this helps clarify, thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for the reply. The one's you are linking are for the 6 1/2" sifters. I'm interested in the smaller set Jan uses. If they are not available on CoolTools, can you provide info on where to get them? Thanks
Hi Nan, we asked Jan your question and she replied: The sunshine colors can be watered down quite a lot if a more watercolor look is wanted. If they need to be opaque-less water but the best method is to put two light coats on with a firing in between painting applications and most can be mixed except for the reds and red purples(I think). Hope this helps!
Hi Bobbi, Sunshine Enamels need to be fired between 1300°F - 1350°F. As long as the microwave kiln can reach this temperature and has a window, this should not be a problem. Thanks for the question!
Hello, all colors, with very few exceptions, are intermixable. In any case, we recommend to test mixtures under the specific processing conditions prior to use. The exceptions are the cadmium containing colors 13 1230 Mandarin, 17 1250 Orange,17 1251 Poppy and 17 1252 Cardinal. These can only be mixed with one another, but mixtures with up to 5 % Green, Blue, Black, or the flux 10 117 are according to our experiences possible without problems. However, extreme firing conditions or too thin color deposits might negatively influence the firing stability of the mixed color. The iron oxide containing color 17 578 is compatible with all other completely intermixable colors. The content of 17 578 Iron Red in the mixture should be higher than 50 %. Creating pastel shades should be done with Mixing White 19 1231. This is suitable as well for overprinting the cadmium colours 13 1230, 17 1250, 17 1251, and 17 1252 to produce pastel shades like they are desired for “skin” colors. To lighten and to overprint colors, mixing flux 10 117 is recommended. This flux can also be used as coating flux, but not for the color 17 578 Iron Red. The coating flux 10 169 improves resistance and gloss of all Sunshine colors.
What lovely pieces, great video, thank you! fyi - please hold the pieces in front of camera close up, without handling them or shaking them. I was struggling to see the final finish but they were being jiggled around and covered by your hands too much to see the difference between the clear finish and sugar finish, for one. Too few closeups and too much wide angle. It should be mostly closeups all the way.
One of those shapes looks like a former glasses lens. Which just gave me an idea to work with old glass lens for art
You are a joy to listen to!
Jan Harrison, really enjoy your tutorials-you make this look so easy! Thank you 🙏
Thanks for including some tips on decals. I bought the water slide decal paper the other day, and I can't wait for it to get here!

what oil to use for potrait painting? and does it give different results than distilled water ?
You can use acrylic medium, which will give it a more paint-like consistency over distilled water which creates more of a watercolor consistency. You can find it here: cooltools.us/collections/enameling-media/products/acrylic-medium-1-oz

Hi Jan, if yiu use oils to mix th colors, do you just wait for it to dry and then fire or do you still need to add a coat of flux? Thank you!
Hi Carol, you will want to wait for the Sunshine colors to dry and then add a coat of flux. Have a good day!
So where do we find how to do these from beginning? To get the decals, etc?
Hi Tamara, we do not currently have a video on this technique; however Jan does explain how she gets the images on these pieces in the beginning of this video.

Have a good day!
Can these be cured with torch and not a kiln?
Hi Tamara, Sunshine Enamels can be torch fired but VERY carefully as they will disappear with too high of heat. Hope this helps!
What ratio of water is used?
Hi Nan, we asked Jan your question and she replied: The sunshine colors can be watered down quite a lot if a more watercolor look is wanted. If they need to be opaque-less water but the best method is to put two light coats on with a firing in between painting applications

Can this be fired in a microwave kiln?
Hi Bobbi, Sunshine Enamels need to be fired between 1300°F - 1350°F. As long as the microwave kiln can reach this temperature and has a window, this should not be a problem. Thanks for the question!
It has been my understanding that sugar coating is just an underfired enamel piece, and not the grains of glass used.

You can leave your paints to me..lol
Thank you for the info, butT the decal explanation was lacking. Please expand. Would be much appreciated.
