“No Deal, No Wheels”: Autoworkers Break Down Why They’re on Strike
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 вер 2023
- The United Auto Workers strike is historic.
Not just because it's the first time in history the union is striking all Big 3 automakers - Ford, GM, and Stellantis - at once, but because they're fighting for the whole working class.
Workers are tired of generating massive profits, and getting so little. One union member stuck it to the CEOs: "Is your time really worth 300-400x more? Do you really work 300-400x times harder than we do? No, you don't."

Stop stock buybacks! Stop billionaire CEOs from raising their salaries and stagnating everyone else’s.
💯%!!! It's a disgrace that is allowed to continue unchecked. We really ought to put more of an effort in to curtail or eradicate stock buybacks, and letting these CEOs share their soaring profits to shareholders.
Just stop stocks! Shareholders also deserve to get bent.
@@TheFinalFrontiersman Sure, as soon as you ban the issuance of stocks.

I wish the workers at Tesla would join the UAW. While an individual union would of course be an improvement I think integrating them into the UAW would do a lot more.

@@iwishiknewhowto1228You're missing the point, if we all went on strike it would show them just how much power we have collectively and that they need us more than we need them. People losing their jobs won't be a problem if we all did it together. That is also why unions are important.

Before unions, the work week was six days long, working twelve hour shifts, next to twelve year old employees.
Unions help ALL OF US.
Alot of theses 🤡 don't know that smh
Not anymore, it’s a world economy and you are competing with those same conditions in other countries
No they don't. Unions transfer more money from a specific company to the workers, NOT society in general. Union workers can afford the higher prices for the goods produced in THEIR sector, while non union workers take the brunt of the higher prices THEY have to pay for the goods produced in the unionized company. In areas where there is a large number of union companies, everyone else generally makes minimum wage. Contrary to the economic illiterates, unions raise prices for goods for everyone.
That being said, as long as you were not on the side of the government shutdowns, and therefore were not supportive of the past recent inflation, there is no reason for you not to ask for more money. If however you liked the government destroying the economy but you want to escape the consequences of your support for this, then you don't deserve to save yourself from inflation, by directing the inflation past you and onto the lower classes. If you are working for an auto company, you are not some struggling proletariat, if you really care about the poor, maybe take those people into consideration instead of pretending you are a victim.

Stock buybacks rose some crazy number, like 1500% over the past 15 years. This is where those billions in profits are going. CEO pay raises is likewise a concern (40% compared to like 5% for regular employees), but we should be making noise about buybacks as well.
Frankly it should be illegal. We need to go back to punishing companies for hoarding wealth. 99% tax on buybacks and anything not related to the strength of the actual companies. Tax breaks for profits going back into the company in the form of wages, benefits or physical improvements/R&D.
@@adamkreuz9068 If profits from one period “go back” into R&D in the next period, it is only because R&D was delayed to the next period. If the R&D happens in the same period, then the profit wouldn’t have been there in the first place. The only consistent approach would be to provide incentives for R&D. regardless of whether there was a profit to begin with.
Paying their fair of taxes or tax havens?
It's also just bad for the American economy and competitiveness. A big reason why German and Japanese auto makers have overtaken American ones is because they don't waste nearly as much money on stock buybacks.

they dont spend their money on luxury purchases, they spend it on the jobs these strikers are refusing to do. Now more money will go to present workers and less to future worker, which means less future workers and higher prices for everyone!
@jasonk8775 the only reason prices would go up would be greedy CEOs and shareholders of the big three stubbornly continue to grow their profits rather than pay the people who make them their obscene profits. You talk as if CEOs use their actual pay to hire workers. 🙄

they don't DECIDE to do something unless they have the money to do it
Literally every single human being tries to sell something for as much as they can get. You don't sell your house for what you paid for it. The things that STOPS people from raising prices, is the supply. The supply does NOT grow without the profit motive. If you kill the profit motive, then whatever DOES exist goes up in price. Telling people to be productive without a right to make a profit is the height of stupidity.
Telling ford to not be "greedy" and give up its profits for the sake of the workers is like me telling you to come and clean my house for free. Why shouldn't you? Are you greedy? Selfish? @@Shria9
Glad I don't drive anymore. I sold all my cars and bought an ebike years ago.
Who wants to drive a gas powered vehicle anyway? Who wants the added cost of a vehicle? Insurance, maintenance, gasoline, inspections, wear and tear, dropping value by the day.... F these capitalist companies who have convinced the populous that this is their only choice for mobility. They only care about their profits over the planet's health and well being. Let these companies crash and burn. Release the workers to work in a better environment with better pay for a better company. If a company cannot afford to pay workers a living wage, they have a bad business model and should be shut down permanently.
I feel fortunate that I am now retired and have access to 2 older cars and may never have to buy another car in my life. I really don't need the products these companies make anymore. What will happen when more people can be in my situation, and not buy cars? Oh, and what will happen when people bike, use public transportation, and start to live in walkable communities?
These bigwigs charge nearly an arm and a leg for just a new model of a car yet they pay their highly skilled worker meager wages. Heck, I have trouble at time changing my oil and don’t how to fix an engine yet their workers know every part of the engine, power frame, & feature of almost every car.
Plus, why do they have to work extremely long hours even though they can achieve close to same amount in a 32 - 40 hr week. Plus, they have 80 days, 180 days, or possibly a year’s worth of inventory laying around not being sent off to dealers, contractors, etc.
The CEOs are literally wasting the workers’ time and losing money by letting the inventory lay around.
There’s a lot of other things to say but solidarity to my auto brethren! Let’s get what we want and change the world for the better.
2:31 $9B divided by 400K which is the number of UAW autoworkers (according to Google Bard) yields $22,500 for each worker. The average wage is $38.5K/yr. That means auto companies can afford to raise the wages for each worker by 58.3% and end this strike. But the UAW is only asking for 40%. The auto companies _must_ do what is right and pay labor.
A fair days wage for a fair days work, but no ceo is going to give it to you, you gotta take it
Let’s fucking go, I’m so happy seeing this
Solidarity from Australia. We're gonna fight and were gonna win!
Thank you, Ms. Tlaib. Even tho I feel you could do MUCH more as a member of Congress.
Every bit counts. 👍👏
For us every bit is a lot ❤
replace CEO's with AI and redistribute their salary to labor...
😂
WHO decides to replace CEOs? The owners? Who are also themselves head of huge pension funds? Who can also be replaced by AI if they start going that route? And then who programs the AI?
@@FutureCommentary1 ez… Labor
@@FutureCommentary1The end game is that everyone pirates copies of AI and it is no longer is hoarded. Instead of seizing the means of production, we will just clone it.
Love to see it. Keep fighting, everyone, and keep supporting your working class union siblings!
Union proud! UAW has my support all the way through. Your UFCW brothers and sisters stand with you in solidarity!
God bless them its time for unions to rise up against poverty wages
Go ahead UAW!!
Thank you for your voice and support Bernie. 🎉❤🙏🙏
🥰
Companies have been ripping off employees for years ,now, no more
I stand with them it should be something done about these greedy CEO people.
Buy GM stock. It is far undervalued. Then put in pro union management.
This Strike is Humanity's last stand before the A.I. revolution eliminates human employment.
The A.I. robots will elimate all employment & well, I don't know who can buy any products once all the jobs are gone... The government will have more injections for survivors... War & Genocide are the tools governments use to eliminate 'surplus population' of 'useless eaters' : CONSUMERS Consumed..
Power to the people! Keep fighting the good fight against the "Let them eat cake" party!
If you can't afford to pay your workers fairly because you would go bankrupt, then your business model is illegitimate and your company should not exist.
But we KNOW they can afford to pay fairly. They just choose to give too much back to shareholders and CEOs who, quite frankly, do not add as much value to the company as the actual rank and file workers.
we need more protests!! more walkouts! lets go!
Lets Go ✊🏿
Walmart, should be next
Solidarity to all workers on the picket line!
5:26 GENERAL STRIKE FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE AND A LIVING WAGE!!! LETS GO!!!!!

1000% U A W 1000% P A Y T H E M !
my favorite season is fall of the CEOs! hot labor autumn 🔥
Stay strong and many thanks from a former union employee!
CEOs are making twenty-five to thirty-five million a year wow the little guy gets screwed blued and tattooed, give them hell UAW, I was once in the Union.
What a lot of Americans fail to understand is that the unions are responsible for how all the non-union people are treated. Enjoy your 40 hr work weeks? Weekends off? Benefits? The unions are in part responsible for these things! I wish we could live in a world where common sense and a semblance of fair treatment existed so that unions were unnecessary, but in a world of such greed that is so prevalent that is just not possible. Maybe some day!
are you crazy. Every job that exists has to be funded by the profits a company makes. If you want to pay higher prices for cars knock yourself out. There is no advantage to you if you don't work for the striking union.
You have not been buying cars for the last 2 years. When they raise the CEO’s wage by 46% that also increase price. Where is your outrage there?
@@jasonk8775 I suggest you do your research before spouting nonsense! Right now those profits are going into their corporate pockets and the bare minimum are going to the people that actually make those cars! If you believe otherwise, you are either a troll or a brainwashed fool, and both are just as bad!
@@gerardomartinez3920 The average price of electric cars is going down. They will continue to do so for many decades to come.
@@gerardomartinez3920 It is right there with you! The CEOs and the greedy shareholders are the real problem! How many billions did they spend buying back stocks to artificially raise their value?! Give a worker more money and he spends it! Give a rich person more money and they save it! Which is better for the economy?!
by their logic if I work in a Boeing plant I should be able to by a 747 because i build one.
The wages of every single person that worked on the plane combined should indeed be able to buy one, yes.
Thank you for shedding light on these people!
Great interviews!!! All we have to do is stand together!!! Keep up the fight 👏👏👏
Tie worker bonuses to CEO bonus pay.
Problem solved.
The problem is that bonuses don't get added to base pay. That causes workers to lose money since inflation is taken out...
In solidarity ✊🏿 Local 551 Chicago! I understand the “ No Deal, No Wheels” slogan! But most of the UAW is still working?!?! They’re still making money! I understand the process, but I think MORE of the plants should’ve been stuck
As a USW union member. We stand with our brothers and sisters at UAW.
I don't get a cost of living adjustment or annual raises in my employment so I could care less about people who make more than I do complaining that they need to make even more. When asking for a raise in my business I am told work more or go work for someone else. Even though this has a sting to it , it does ring true. When I don't make what I want or need I find another company to move to that would be willing to pay me. Good luck guys but I feel nothing for your position. Hope you realize if you get paid more the cost of your product is going to go up as well which means everyone will be paying even more for vehicles which already cost to much.
Bring these auto maker’s to there knees , these poor workers have been on there knees for years
CEO$ are BOLD and there shareholders keep popping up in the comments insulting the working class!✊️ #SOLIDARITY WE STAND
Every argument put forward by the anti-union class falls apart under scrutiny.
Go Union! ✊
Calling a proposed labor deal competitive is a weasel word because that doesn't mean anything. It is misleading. "Competitive" just means it's similar to other bad deals out there right now. Calling something competitive because it's a micro unit better than other bad deals is a stunning amount of wordplay.
Why is it ok for CEO and top management to have extreme paychecks, but it's not okay for workers to demand a better deal??
Labor is collectively responsible for 99% of the profits any company has so it's about damn time they had 99% of the say.
We don't have to accept a lack of power, people. All we have to do is stand together. We can take back our power and we can do it together.
The people at the top are scared, two CEO have said that people are lazy, they are losing power and they know it.
