I just started my Jiu Jitsu journey at Carlos school here in Dallas. Wasn't expecting to see him. First every day there (this last saturday 10/13) i'm learning No-Gi stuff and he walks in, Coral belt an all. craziness.
So when you wrote your comment you were a white belt...where are you at now? Blue? Purple?
@@TheHitman- i trained for 4 years, just over 2 of it directly with Carlos. Then drama happened involving their front desk girl telling carlos i said some shit about his ranking that i never said and Carlos just told me to leave. (along with his last remaining loyal black belt). she later got found embezzeling money from them. Carlos invited me back but the spark for jiu jitsu was kneecapped by what originally happened. Haven't rained since. So i was uh... 2 stripe blue at the time. Haven't rained in 3 or 4 years. May go back.

Carlos,one of my best 3 instructors of all time...i ve only seen him on video....but its a style i like very much...true-SOLID
Carlos was always a perfect gentleman. I remember one day he was arguing with someone on the phone before class. I feared that his angry conversation on the phone would affect his behavior during class. But when he actually did run class, he was still a perfect gentlemen, no different than he was any other day. He must have had incredible moral discipline to be able to do that, to have that angry experience, but without allowing it affect him on the job.

Does anyone know specifically what the reason is as to why Jean Jacques gave Carlos the belt he'd been wearing?
Is the reason because he wants it to be a "surprise," and that he doesn't 'want' to have to "hide" it inside of his gi? I'm sure that (assuming that Carlos legitimately didn't know it was coming that day), some people present may have said to themselves: "Hmmmm. Professor [Jean Jacque] Machado's belt looks REALLY clean and new today..."
Or is it a symbolic gesture? If so, it's certainly a gesture that wouldn't make sense or be plausible to the instructor presenting any lower ranking belt. Lol.
I also don't imagine that the reason could have been that 'their order of black-red belts was running late...' 28 years after Carlos became a black belt (I'm obviously being facetious in the last couple lines). :-)

All high level bjj guys aren't all so great and honorable. I worked with a 20+ year gracie black belt, and he was a sociopathic asshole, wanted to stir drama and always looking for a reason to tussle with someone.

A lot of chubby guys in there. You know what that means? They dont sweat that much. You know why? They are VERY good at Jiu Jitsu.
Everytime I get on the mat and see a guy that is heavy AND a Brown or Black belt I know im gonna get smashed because that guy takes it easy and is efficient.
Some people just have chubby genetics man, I have friends that the same bread I eat have 3x more effect into their body. As you age your metabolism slows down a little and testosterone production drops. You are right about it!
Your weight has to do with your diet. You can train all day long like a beast but if you go home and eat shit all day guess whats gonna happen.

Why is there a Brown Belt with 6 stripes? We only do 4 then a new belt at my accademy
Ye I know about the stripes on the side for instructor, but they should be all the way on the edge of the bar and it did not seem like they where placed there. But, I guess that has to be the reason for the extra stripes.
Ye I have seen the red bar on a purple belt one time in a club i visited.

Rickson Gracie was also one of our teachers in the past so its family. Jean was helping his son, Kron Gracie in his training since he moved back to Brasil and after his return they talked and made it happen. it's all good.
