Young people don't want to go to the bank anymore than they want to go to a Blockbuster.

I get the sense that both you and Brandon think COVID was a bigger inflection point in the current 4th turning than the 2016 election. I think Neil's identification of the 2016 election as a regeneracy in his latest book is a bit off base. The attempt to forge a COVID consensus fits the definition of a regeneracy much better, even though it appears to have largely failed.

Well they were both inflection points in their own way. Personally, I don't believe in the regeneracy idea anymore. I think it's something Strauss and Howe conceived out of want more than on historical evidence. Neil doubles down on the idea in his latest book, and that struck me as something he should have been challenged on immediately.

I'm starting to get the feeling that you feel Neil Howe is taking for granted the eventual salvation of the future millennials will bring about because you seem to believe that Howe makes certain assumptions as to how millennials were brought up, and that Howe should do a deeper dive into millennial upbringing and arrive at a better conclusion. I could be wrong tho.

Right you are. He's been caught up in looking at Millennials as a hero archetype for a long time. He doesn't appreciate as much as he should, the fact that growing up in the '90s and the early 21st century was in many respects totally unlike growing up in between the World Wars. Nor does he seem to appreciate that America's social cohesion and the dominant attitudes about the country itself are miles apart today from what they were then. The generational archetypes aren't as deterministic as Howe thinks. I'm a Millennial (as I suspect you are); I know what it was like growing up then. It was not exactly the most wholesome or empowering experience.

@@generationreport I feel as though the broad conclusion Howe draws about the end of the crisis era hinges on certain conclusions that lack deep analysis. I can see some of what homie has written about as being true. However at times I find myself wondering exactly how (no pun intended) homie arrives at his conclusions without citing examples, or at least talking to people who grew up during the unraveling era as protected children.

Exactly...and he's been able to stay with his usual approach to discussing these subjects for a long time, because he's never encountered anyone (or had to contend with anyone) who has the same facility with the subjects as he does. Whether Neil realizes it or not, he's in an echo chamber. The latest illustration of that was a recent podcast he did with F.I.R.E.

@@generationreport I hope you don't mind me jumping in but I agreed with what you, Brandon, and fakereality are saying about how Strauss and Howe presented not just Millennials as Heros but really all of the generational archetypes in the current saeculum. It may be my GenX bias showing but I feel he's very invested in not just Millennials as Heroes but in a vision of Boomers being wise Prophet elders in the mold of the Missionary Generation without taking into account that we attribute many positive values to the Missionaries in 20/20 hindsight looking past 1945. The team orientation and consensus building qualities of Heroes also produce group think and ostracism of non-conformists, which he does recognize as eventually creating the hubris of the GI Generation. I think that's where a lot of the feeling that we might be on the path to a technocrat authoritarian state comes in. Any of the positive qualities of each archetype can be overdone to the point of being a net negative.
Great conversation, and I'm happy to see folks engaging with Strauss and Howe's ideas. I've had it in the back of my mind for a long time, after hearing Neil and Doug on CSPAN back in the 1990s and their ideas have helped me make some sense of what's been going on in the world for the last decade or so. Thanks!
