THANK YOU!!! My mechanic wanted $100 for new/used junk yard windshield motor plus labor, insisting these common "non-parking wipers necessitate a COMPLETE wiper motor replacement... before heading towards the bank, I found your vid and fixed it for free. again, I Thank YOU; you are a blessing. I shall endeavor to see what else you got for my 2003 Chevy Venture. TY!!! I look forward to demonstrating how WRONG that mechanic is... and to point out all his possible prior mis-diagnosis of work done by him...
Thanks for the up close and slo-mo shot of the mechanism in action. That helped me to understand the mechanism and also to align it back up properly on the motor shaft, since I removed my mechanism to clean it and lube it and to inspect the reverse catch spring.
That is the correct repair of non parking wipers. Those that suggested bending the tab (I couldn't if I wanted) had probably got the little spring loaded arm (dog) freed up while beating on that tab. Good call! Mine works great now. Thanks
Yeah, it is a simple idea. The dog snaps by the tab during run and catches when the motor is reversed when turned off parking the wipers. Those other videos I don't think the people really understand what is taking place. Actually I figured it out myself when I couldn't bend that tab. So, went back to the original videos and found yours. You deserve the praise for the repair not them. Thanks for posting it.
I didn't quite understand. For others struggling with this, the missing instructions that helped me were to get the cam of the mechanism to lock onto the pin, then turn the wipers on to the intermittent position and turn the key to the off position immediately after the motor rotates and pauses (as it does for the intermittent setting). That is the key. THEN install the mechanism onto the motor and screw it down. Then turn the key to the "on" position, turn the wipers on, then off, the wipers stop at the proper park position. Then you can attach the linkage back to the crank arm. @N42I
This was the very, very first video I'd ever edited and created on UA-cam. It is not very descriptive and I'm sorry for that. Thanks for pointing that out. I cringe every time I see this 😣. But I am unable to re-edit and upload it.
@@markfothebeast Thanks for your video and time to record it, post it, etc. I still have not done any myself, but with the many issues I've had with my 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette, I probably should. Craziest one which might help you sometime: All the gauges would drop to zero, radio would shut off randomly or at a stop sign, engine would still run fine. Nobody knew what it was. I changed the instrument panel, previous owner changed the alternator, I looked for bad fuses, loose ground wires. It sometimes didn't start in park but would start in neutral. One day, the connection from the gear shift and the transmission broke. There's a little plastic piece on the end of the cable by the transmission. I replaced that piece and the mysterious electrical issue went away. Not sure if the neutral safety switch wasn't making good connection because of the bad plastic piece, or maybe I moved some other wire while reaching down the engine bay to get to this piece. No idea. But it's been fine for a year or more now. Nobody has done a video on that one... maybe it will help you someday.
@@joeorlando94 I have the cure for literally all of these issues! I have video footage of the repairs but I had not had time during my lengthy home remodel to edit and upload the video.
@@joeorlando94 I do have a little video in fast motion of the wiring that causes fuel pump and fuel gauge issues. My van died at a stop sign one day and had to be towed. This connection between the floor and interior behind the drivers seat had been problematic for awhile and I finally tracked it down. Interior functions were having issues as well from poor connections under both front door jambs. This is the only video I have of repairing the fuel gauge/pump issue which is on my "markfothebeast" Facebook page. m.facebook.com/markfothebeast
@@markfothebeast Always something with this van, but I bought it used for $860 a few years ago. In the first video the post is not in the notch when rotating. In the last video it is in the notch when rotating and leaves the notch only at the end. Which is the proper position?
Good eye! It's been about 6 years since I made this video and I can't remember exactly how this works. I'm only guessing here but I'd assume that the post should be in the notch while the assembly is rotating.
Hi, my '97 Venture's wipers were working properly, and stopped in the correct position. But one day the wipers crossed paths and hit one another and got bent out of shape. I bent the wiper blades back and tried them again. They still hit, and it seems like the driver's side wiper arm has some play in it. I checked that all bolts were tight, and it seems fine. Any idea what would make them miss-timed?
+Jatmundar I had to remove my wipers entirely to replace the alternator and I had the same issue. I had to find where the wiper arms and bars are supposed to be placed on the gears/bolts and tweak them both.
Hey thanks for checking! The mechanism seems overly complicated with all the arms, levers and joints. If you could give me a clue where I might start adjusting, I would very much appreciate it!
I have a 2005 Chevy Venture. I put in a new motor and control arm. The control arm just spins around, and when turned off they do not move down into the resting place. Any suggestions?
I went over this entire wiper system once again just last summer. I'm trying to refresh my memory here. There's a very particular method to reinstalling the wiper arm back on the mechanical rotating motor dealio. With the arm disconnected from the motor, the motor assembly must rotate a particular number of times. You then quickly turn off the wiper motor at that point in the cycle. Than you reinstall the arm to the motor. It takes a few tries to get it at just the right timing so the mechanical assembly grabs and enters the park cycle. I will share a link to a video that helps clarify this process. Give me a few minutes to get back to you.
*Update - If you for some reason ever have the need to remove the rotating mechanism (motor replacement for example), do not overtighten the center bolt and avoid using an impact gun. The moving plates can bend and you'll have more problems. It will have issues entering the park position, the motor shaft will eventually strip the splines inside the rotating mechanism and the wiper assembly will no longer move.

My wipers park correctly, but when I FIRST start them and am going highway speeds, or a strong wind, they'll fly up vety quickly and the passenger side pops off the side of the windshield. I've lost several wipers this way. Once they're u parked however, they will Co tongue to wipe properly and then park properly. But... Every time when going that fast they'll do this. Any idea how to fix THAT? :)
Does the arm move with the wipers? It sounds like either the wipers were put on wrong or the gears for the wiper arms are stripped. It's not uncommon to put the wrong wipers on or install the right ones improperly. I am working on an additional video on how to re-adjust the wiper arms after removal. Some remove the alternator by removing the wiper arm and motor assembly and it can be difficult to properly re-assemble.
+Dave Hubbard With key on, engine off, turn on the wipers. During the wiper cycle where they generally tend to fly upward from a gust of wind, quickly disconnect the plug to the wiper motor (watch your fingers). Turn off ignition, grab the wiper arms and attempt to move up and down. The wiper shafts below the windshield that move the wipers should move with the wipers and there should be some resistance. Pay close attention to the wiper assembly under the hood while moving the arms. The wiper arms should not have any loose movement in any position. Inspect wiper assembly and motor assembly for something allowing free movement during the wiper cycle.
Dave Hubbard Dave Hubbard I've fumbled around with the wiper assembly enough times and it still confuses me. I'd pay close attention to the rotating assembly on the motor. Strangely, you mentioned the wipers fly up only when the wiper circuit is energized. There may be a mechanical part inside that "locks" free movement that has difficulty engaging/disengaging during initial wiper start but works itself loose after a couple cycles. There are 3 torx bolts that hold that assembly on (T30?). Last resort would be to remove this, inspect, clean, and grease. Get a good look at a picture of one to see that the parts are still there (spring, etc). Mark the exact position of this and the wiper arms before removing or you'll be adjusting it a few times.
Okay so I see what's going on but not sure where it's supposed to catch or whatever. When the wipers FIRST start up, before they pause and whatever locks in locks in, the wind can catch them and fling them fully out. The little pin I see that locks in, also sticks out under the plate.... This seems to fly up against, and then over a bolt holding the wheel on. I did get some pics and a video of me manually moving it... Not a great angle but I think you can see what I'm talking about in it. Let's see what I can attach here. Looks like I can do pics but not video. Anyhow see the shearing pin? It's flying to and over that bolt I pictured. Lately, which is new, it'll even throw the alignment out for a wipe or two after. Wasn't doing that before. Just kicked the wiper over the edge of the windshield as they started. If there's a way to send you the video, let me know? :) thank you very much, btw!
The audio was obnoxiously loud. Which was my fault back in the day when I'd uploaded this video. UA-cam removed the option of changing audio. Instead, you are able to use audio that UA-cam has and this tune was free.
