I was on the fence about getting this bike due to the bulkiness of the set up. Your commentary from 9:40-10:30 sold me. Descents and cornering are 90% of a ride. Thanks.
Hi Clint, I have a Giant Propel and had the same creaking issue for my propel although I have applied quite a lot of carbon paste on the seat. After excluding all the other potential sites that might creak, i.e. BB, crank bolts, pedals, etc, just a few days ago, I realised that the actual issue is actually from the SEAT CLAMP itself. I took the seat clamp totally out, which looks like three 4 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm prism/pyramid like structures attached together with the bolt. Then, I applied carbon paste on the seat clamp before putting it back in together with the seat post (with carbon paste) and tighten according to the torque wrench. The recommended was 5-6 nM on Giant Propel, But I could feel that it is already quite tight with 4 nM, therefore, I just stopped there. I did a test ride yesterday, 45 km and the creaking sound was completely gone. Assuming that the seat clamp in your XTC is almost similar to Propel, have a think about it. Cheers, hope it will help.
Great review! I own this bike for a few weeks now and this review matches my experience totally! Great fun to ride in loose sand during summer here. I will buy myself a set of 29er wheels in a while for XC rides.
Always enjoy your videos. Im an experiecd mtbiker, and i find your attention to details interesting. I often learn somting new, a better way to do service, maintence or setup of the bike. Keep up the good work, bikebrother.
Would be curious to see your lap times if you had more so of a "light, cross country" 2.8 in tire. Love your approach to all these xtc videos. Great job!
I work at a Giant store and i weighed the frame in size M at 1.7kg. I also weighed my personal frame with is exactly the same but in size xl at 1.8kg so thats pretty heavy, but realy sustainable
Please consider 29 tires up front and 27.5+ tires in back. That'll shave some weight up front where there's suspension and the rear will have great climbing traction and cushioning. Would be very curious and it's easy to do.
I feel like you are missing the point of the plus tires. Sandy terrain. Soft terrain in general. Rocky rooty climbs. Super technical or steep climbs. You are stuffing plus wheels into a XC box. In the right situation it will be much faster than the xc bike. Put 18-19 psi in there. Then compare. Just do it. Trust me! Horses for courses my friend! I just feel like you just dont get "it" yet. You will. Great review. Keep up the good work.
Superbike373 couldn't said it better myself, has a person who's been riding a trek plus bike for the last 18 months plus I ride a trek Farley with 27.5 x450 tyres I know where you are coming from , have a look at the other tests on other channels
That is an analogy. Different bikes for different terrain. The right tool for the job. Like Clint said, two sets of wheels and you have a quiver killer.
*Superbike373* You're not incorrect. Yet you don't really get what the series is about. He wanted to know how fast can he be on a plus bike. That's why he took his holy-shit level XC race bike and pitted it up against this one. It was pretty much certain that the plus bike will be slower, but the real question, the one question that nobody knew the answer for, up until this point, was how much slower is a plus bike compared to an XC race bike? As Clint said: "I just gotta know."
Five years later...... I'd love to hear your thoughts looking back on the 27.5 + bikes. Seems they've faded away. Why? I feel like I missed out on getting one of these because it seems well suited to my riding style / size / local trails.
Clint, loving the thorough review! Can you run 27.5x2.6 tires on that bike? Thought that might help reduce weight and still provide some flotation. I'm guessing it would depend how much it would mess with the geometry of the bike and if the inner dimension of the rims would provide a good fit. Thanks:)
I love your 27.5 project. Lots of good info. After you try the 29r wheel set on, I have one more idea. Try the 27.5 on your 29r full sus bike. Full sus and plus tires!! Will they fit? From what I read the rear 3 inch wide tire won't fit, but maybe a 2.8 would. That would be a great tail bike with the 275 and a great XC bike with the 29. Worth investigating.
I surprised it doesn't weigh less, my Specialized Fuse Expert weighs 30.9 with the same dropper post (aluminum frame). I'm running tubeless though and the tubes weigh 9.4 oz each (made a huge difference in rolling resistance). I didn't catch weather yours was tubeless or not.
Thanks Clint! Have you ever tested a fatbike? I'm just thinking because I drive my fatbike 26er on the smooth surface much faster than my full sus 29er. That is so strange that it is very hard to believe. My fatbike is about the same weight than the full sus. I don't know - I'm just thinking to try plus tire bike. Just for fun and see what is the performance. I'm no pro but my pedaling is for sure improved and I have oval chaining in my fatbike. I have also 1x11 in my fatbike versus 2x10 in my full sus. Maybe it is just gear ratio and not the tire dilemma. For sure the hardtail is allowing you to transfer all power to the ground and easier to speed. Lol - never try a fatbike or you will be totally lost in the fun driving...
I have specialized purgatory tires in the full sus. They are bullet proof tires :-) Can you recommend faster tires? I mean 2.3'' 29ers or even wider? I know the Schwalbe Racing Ralph in 2,35'' but they are very difficult to get. Some people use Ralph with the Rocket Ron in the front. Perfect combination as they say.
I've used I really like Maxxis tires. I've used the Maxxis Aspen tires before. Not a ton of grip but very very fast. Also the Crossmark is pretty fast. But I don't know if you can get either of those bigger than 2.25. The Ikon is good and I think you can get in a 2.35.
You know it's funny that seat Pole was my idea.... I got documents that I send them to a company that invents product for you and I drew that seatpost just like that cuz I always had trouble when I will go uphill the seat would friction too much with my butt so I was wondering it'll be cool to have a seat that go automatically go down and that's what I came up with and I drew it exactly like that seat post you got on... And I actually got documents on that that I came up with that in 1994.... And now that I see that this bike has this I never even knew this existed I'm going to see if I could do something about that...
Hi Clint, I know you have a 27.5 advanced xtc HT. Would you consider getting the 2018 advanced xtc 29er HT for yourself or do a review? And also have you ever considered testing the cannondale Fsi or Scalpel? What is your take on this? Thanks
Honestly, I think the Niner hardtail that I'm testing right now it's going to be pretty close. I'm really a full suspension guy so the only hartail I would have in my possession is a test bike.
Hey random, but i used to road cycle and as it was fun, I prefer more adventure now. I stopped for a while, sold the bike, moved on to other things involving nature. But I'm trying to find a bike under 1,000$ alu frame, disc brake if possible. Something for the road, but also i can take on trails I'll randomly find and beat it up. Low maintenance, because I was always maintaining it, are disc brakes lower maintenance than rim? Was thinking about the Giant Anyroad 2. Since i've been out of the loop for a while I imagine a lot has changed. What should I be looking for? I'm not a complete noob. I know my frame size, I want drop bars, I want clearance for 35-40mm tires (I think that's good for trails, and the occasional hard rocked place i'll find) Any tips you can provide is appreciated! Gravel grinder may be my best bet but cyclocross bikes seem to fit the criteria too. Thanks :)
+immer besser unless you plan to race cyclocross I think a gravel bike would be your best option. Very versatile. If you plan to race cross then get a cyclocross bike that can fit 40 C tires, like a giant TCX.
I've had a 27.5 plus for a year and will never go back. You need to get rid of the tubes, that is going to make all the difference. You keep saying how heavy it is but you are pushing an extra pound or two by not converting to tubeless. I'm wondering if you can beat your xc strava times once you go tubeless. I bet you can.
Can this bike, and the 2019 XTC Advanced, take 29 AND 27.5+ wheels or not? The Giant website says the forks on those bikes aren't compatible with 27.5+...
Great review. you are right, its not a giant dropper, Infact Tranz X not owned by Giant. tranzx.com/ I have not noticed the flex in rims on a bike yet. BUT I rode 26ERS and then upgraded 29ERS bikes to proper wheels. but I have did not ride my hardtails in a long time, but I got Hope Pro 4 Enduro 29 wheel set on my main bike, they are triple wall, with 32 spokes, and brass nipples. but I have not tried wheels yet.
i think the traditional xc bike is being fazed out. no one says hey i want to buy a steep ha bike. what they do say is i want a more slacker bike that i can do some xc and trail and maybe get some air. most riders are the universal types, roudy on weekends and maybe xc for cardio. cost comes to mind and the america. dollar has gotten so depreciated. at the same time min wage and middle class have not seen incomes rise or get real cost of living increases. add the that 90 million unemployed. so it all plays in on who is buy what.
its looking like you have quite taken to the bike clint. if you had to make a choice between the plus bike or your full sus trance, at this moment in time which would it be? now thats putting the cat among the pigeons.
you REALLY need to go tubeless on that bike, reviewing it with tubes is a waste of time. It will be a different bike, you have over 1 lb of tube on those plus tires. I ride multiple plus bikes(trek stache rocks!) and can tell you its a world of difference. Your psi sounds about right for your weight though, I'm at 13-14 riding rocks at 275lbs
While going tubeless will make a big difference, I think it's alright to do a review like this as the bike comes from Giant. That gives potential buyers a better perspective of what they're looking at straight from the shop. Though like he said in the video, it is silly that Giant doesn't just make tubeless setup standard for this bike when $1500 hardtail plus bikes have that as their default setup.
Too many factors to give you a number. Experiment with pressures, while not going crazy low so you don't damage your rim..... You'll know it when you feel it.
It really depends on the tubes and this Giant runs Schwalbe. Their + tubes are light @200g (Maxxis is 370g) and if you put ~120-150ml Stan's fluid in the tires you won't save much weight. It's not the necessarily the weight saving why tubeless is better... The PSI really depends on tires/terrain/weight/riding style. I'm 80kg (176lbs) and I run my 27,5+ HT tubeless from 12-13 to 15-16 depending where and how I ride.
asked you explain numerous times why your super light carbon frame 27.5 plus bike weights the same as my all alluminum 27.5 plus bike ? Clint got no response sorry dude got to unsubscribe
Keith Oliver carbon frame vs aluminum seem to vary by only half a pound +/-. That weight savings could easily be matched by a lighter crank, heavy dropper post to standard post, and other miscellaneous component mixes. This bike also has a Fox 34 with 120 travel which isn't in the weight category of it's lighter XC counterparts.
I'm really just surprised that my 1499.00 bike weights within a few grams of a 3000.00 dollar bike and I have entry level components and and a heavy recon silver Rock shok 130 mm travel fork and nashbar m30 clipless pedals from the 90's & my bike tipped the scales at 28.48 The only difference is his seat post & of course this must be the difference between the two but why spend so much money to lose all the advantage in one minor difference, I guess I just really thought you would get at least four/1/2 lb reduction in weight with carbon but not the case here. thank you for your response.
Keith Oliver How you managed to obtain a 27.5+ bike from the 90's is beyond me. My buddy bought a used prolite "full suspension"bike from the 90's and it weighed in at 25lbs. However my 2013 aluminum Trance blows the tube socks off of his bike and it weighs 28lbs fully dressed
I was on the fence about getting this bike due to the bulkiness of the set up. Your commentary from 9:40-10:30 sold me. Descents and cornering are 90% of a ride. Thanks.

great review of the bike. Just what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to test and review the bike. Keep up the great work.

yeah you're helping me a lot trying to decide what I want to buy might have me a giant 27.5 Plus bike in my future
I like the concept of the single sprocket up front for simplicity. This is a pretty nice bike!
Would be curious to see your lap times if you had more so of a "light, cross country" 2.8 in tire. Love your approach to all these xtc videos. Great job!
awesome video Clint, loving this series. keep up the good work!
I work at a Giant store and i weighed the frame in size M at 1.7kg. I also weighed my personal frame with is exactly the same but in size xl at 1.8kg so thats pretty heavy, but realy sustainable
Loving the channel, very informative as always
Thanks Clint. I am taking a hard look at the XTC. Lucky you. Got both a hardtail27.5+ and a plush FS.
Please consider 29 tires up front and 27.5+ tires in back. That'll shave some weight up front where there's suspension and the rear will have great climbing traction and cushioning. Would be very curious and it's easy to do.
When you go tubeless, switch to 2.8" Rocket Rons. Big weight savings and less sidewall rollover with 2.8"
I feel like you are missing the point of the plus tires. Sandy terrain. Soft terrain in general. Rocky rooty climbs. Super technical or steep climbs. You are stuffing plus wheels into a XC box. Come on, dude! That's the freaking point! :)
He's been doing this precisely because he wants to know how does the 27,5+ bike fare as an XC bike.
Ok. Do the same thing on a sandy trail. The plus bike will win. Different conditions will favor each bike. That is my point. Am I correct?
*Superbike373* You're not incorrect. Yet you don't really get what the series is about. He wanted to know how fast can he be on a plus bike. That's why he took his holy-shit level XC race bike and pitted it up against this one.

I really like the color scheme
Five years later...... I'd love to hear your thoughts looking back on the 27.5 + bikes. Seems they've faded away. Why? I feel like I missed out on getting one of these because it seems well suited to my riding style / size / local trails.
Your reviews are really solid.
I've read somewhere that the rolling resistance difference with 29" wheels is about 5%
Clint, loving the thorough review! Can you run 27.5x2.6 tires on that bike? Thought that might help reduce weight and still provide some flotation. I'm guessing it would depend how much it would mess with the geometry of the bike and if the inner dimension of the rims would provide a good fit. Thanks:)
+Ryan Sinks you could probably put 2.6 tires on those rims. 2.6 is probably as low as you want to go.
I love your 27.5 project. Lots of good info. After you try the 29r wheel set on, I have one more idea. Try the 27.5 on your 29r full sus bike. Full sus and plus tires!! Will they fit? +Ken Pearson good idea but 2.4 is about as big as you can get on the RKT.
Please put on to 29er wheel on your next review of that XTC Advanced 27.5+ 1. Thank you
Have you looked at the tire pressure calculator on another channel? Not trying to promote him, but I love my new air settings.
How tall are you? Thanks for your videos, learning so much from your channel.🚲
that carbon Giant frame sure looks good!

Very useful thing to have. Shaving everything,
Awesome review as usual...
It still amazes me that you had a alloy anthem frame. I think everyone should stop dissing alloy
Hi Clint!
I just bought a Merida Big Seven 20 hardtail, would you recommend to take it to the trails?
Thanks!
I wouldn't want to put 29er wheels on it but would love to find a lightweight 27.5+ wheelset for my Rocky Mountain Sherpa.
You know it's funny that seat Pole was my idea.... Really huh? I've been seeing many videos advocating a cross bike as a "all in one" bike vs gravel. Ok, i'll keep looking thanks :)
Would you classify the renegade expat and niner rlt 9.1 star tiagra cyclecross or gravel bikes?
Awesome Plus+ 😃
I've had a 27.5 plus for a year and will never go back. You need to get rid of the tubes, that is going to make all the difference. You keep saying how heavy it is but you are pushing an extra pound or two by not converting to tubeless. I'm wondering if you can beat your xc strava times once you go tubeless. I bet you can.
+Justin Dean tubes are coming out tonight
reasons for me going/staying tubeless:
1 trail communication
2 minimized pinch flats
3 lighter weight???
Are Giant still making this in 27.5 fat-tyre format ?? - (I don't want the 29 version)
hi, just curious about "boutique " brand such as yeti or s cruz, what is your opinion about their bikes compared to giant, trek , spesh and so on?
Dito Fuhrer they all climb like a goat and descend like a demon, you yourself are a larger variable than the difference between nice bikes
Have you decided which bike you'll be racing at the Hammerhead event? 50 or 100 mile?
+David Mackey the 29er
I'm new to the MTB world. I'm 6,2 240lbs what's the right PSI for me? Got a Giant Talon 2 to start.
Nice review.
Have you been able to find a stand for your giant bike? Instead of leaning it against an object
Yes. Feedback Sports Scorpion
changing the position of the wheel forward doesn't require chain length (link removal)?
+lucifuge1968 only on a single speed. The derailleur cage adjusts for any tension, just like when you shift.
do you think this would be a better bike for a heavier rider I'm 232 pounds
Clay Boren uh no. over 195 your a Clydesdale. go burley
Clay you would be fine on it. I'm 225lbs all geared up myself.
If the post is creaking...it may be the seat mount.
Can this bike, and the 2019 XTC Advanced, take 29 AND 27.5+ wheels or not? The Giant website says the forks on those bikes aren't compatible with 27.5+...
I'm not really sure. I would check with your local shop and have them reach out to their giant rep. I haven't seen the 2019 XTC in person yet.
Nice!🔥
Great bike!
I'd love to ride that bike in the old rock quarries of santos.
+Flatzout I'm doing that on Wednesday
Are you gonna ride both areas , john brown , ant hill , etc , then jump over to vortex ? Can't wait for the report !!
holy crap 145 lbs. no wonder. i was like uh thats nuts but im 220 geared up
Good going
i have been pedaling for 20 years. still cant rip turns like some people. will the plus tires help me?
ROBinJVILLE yeah they'll inspire confidence with more grip but they won't create new skills.
Could you tell me you height and weight. I will be purchasing this bike next year (2018)
+Mark Brown about 5'9"...145 lbs
Lubricate the saddle rail clamp bolts and nuts. Anywhere that metal is touching, except the rails themselves.
+josh benfield did that. Still creaking.
I would have to agree with them being a trail bike .
Great review.
you are right, its not a giant dropper, Infact Tranz X not owned by Giant.

I have not noticed the flex in rims on a bike yet. BUT I rode 26ERS and then upgraded 29ERS bikes to proper wheels.

+Jim Smith The Trance is the funniest bike I've ridden...I don't think I could give that one up
Clint Gibbs i thought that would be the answer, i love my trance, just love how they decend, always makes me smile.☺
you should try 29+ wheels
How to install the dropper seat post
still not tubeless?
So are you gonna keep it?
+Domowoi2 not sure yet
What’s is cost of this bike
How speed in the cycle tell me
kreeking could be bottom bracket too.
Those stlye seat clamps for road good, for mtb not so good
you REALLY need to go tubeless on that bike, reviewing it with tubes is a waste of time. It will be a different bike, you have over 1 lb of tube on those plus tires. James Kather but how much sealant will be needed for plus?
best attribute of tubeless is not weight.
I wa [planning on buying a 2020 XTC, but after seeing the goofy seatpost retention system, im going to pass.

Where the fuck is Florida? Great review though!
Don't put straw near your house it's going to attract mice and rats
asked you explain numerous times why your super light carbon frame 27.5 plus bike weights the same as my all alluminum 27.5 plus bike ? Clint got no response sorry dude got to unsubscribe
Keith Oliver sorry he doesn't read every single comment lol
However my 2013 aluminum Trance blows the tube socks off of his bike and it weighs 28lbs fully dressed
nashbar m30 pedals from the 90's bike is a 2017 salsa timberjack sorry for the confusion
