- Giant XTC SLR 29 First Ride Report!!
I finally got to throw a leg over the lightweight 2021 Giant XTC SLR 29. I was surprised by the price of this bicycle coupled with how well it actually handles. I wouldn't be afraid to take this thing out to the races and put it up against a higher end carbon bike.
I hope you all enjoyed and be sure to like and subscribe!
I will see everyone in the next video where we round out the mountain bike race series at the Cane Creek Cup.

I watched this film about 4 weeks ago, and your other review you did on this bike in the shop, and you convinced me! So I bought one, I changed the unbelievably useless Tektro brakes to Deore, changed the Deore shifter to an XT shifter and now as you said on price point I have a pretty good bike. Thanks for helping me choose!
Thank you for review, it was very informative! I bought this bike today, can't wait to ride it!
"It climbed like a mountain goat."
Now that says a lot good about this bike!
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines!
I owned two previous versions of this bike which are 27.5’s.man all you have said on this review was on point! The frame is really something it’s super light for an AL frame.
I've also experienced the lockout staying in the locked position after releasing it from the remote. Hasn't been much of an issue since I don't use it often. Also thanks for the shout out there, that was cool.
No problem! I'm going to keep an eye on them and hopefully figure out what it is. It's always harder to debunk when it doesn't do it all the time.
You can't beat the warranty on the Giant brand bikes
Keep up the great works!
Great review! I have a Giant Roam 2 and love the ride quality, but the bike is definitely setup for road riding. That XTC SLR 29 would be good for my trail riding!
Great video, got weekend ride on xtc advanced 2 29" 2021, great bike.
great trail bike or xc race bike. i just bought one and got second in my first race with it. sport 35-44 class. they are in stock now go get one. this bike is very light and fast. immediately upgraded to GX derailer, 34T chainring, giant spd pedals (specs say they are lighter than xtr and only $85!), and foam grips. this bike is a winner. comes with sram drivetrain now.
Your audio is good, good enough man, really
Just bought this bike today, my first mountain bike. I’m excited to get it.
You picked a great one!
hey there cos' keep up the good videos 👍🏻
Good morning thanks for sharing.
May God bless you and your family, keep safe.
Great review thanks. Question how is the giant fathom 2021 at climbing?
@Mossie
Hey,thanks for the review.
Did you weight the stock wheels?
i owned one and it was great! nice review btw. keep it up sir
Why thank you, I appreciate the support :)
I just bought this bike n road 40 plus bike in last 4 years n so far most supple aluminum frame loved it
I mean, can't a guy just like Giant Bicycles? :)
Well of course 🙂
@@MossieRidesBikes Spot on. Im only a Giant fan.
*I love the **Latest.Bike** . The standard seat that cMe with the bike was incredibly uncomfortable, but a quick seat swap made the bike so much more enjoyable.*
Ok if this bike frame is 3.15 lbs and the fathom Is north of 4 # do you think if one changed the head angle a bit slacker with a bearing cup do you think this would make a good light trail bike for a 60something old dude?
what's best option for you, version 1 or version 2....
Do you think this is a better bike than the fathom 2?
Great review.
On this bike, have you switched an eagle cassette with SLX cassette? Towards the end of the video(10:56) it looks like as if the derailleur is Sram but the cassette is from Shimano.
You cant beat Shimano Drivetrain in Midrange Category. interms of price and Quality
loved the bike, but the handlebar twists without locking and brake levers scratched my top tube. Second crash had a dent and scratched deep on my top tube due to flipping of the brake levers upward and slammed my light holder's cable tie. Now I have a dent. lol
That's my dream bike🥺
How much weicht the stock bike xtc SLR 1?
How'd you get it so cheap? These are in the neighborhood of 4k where I live
What trail were you testing this out on? As always great video.
It's the new mountain island trail near Mt. Holly. It's short and sweet but mileage is getting added every week!
How does this compare to the Scott Scale 970?
Think about buying this bike in carboncarbon build. Aluminum would be plenty light enough for me but no one has it in stock locally.
Can you upgrade xtc slr 1 with an internal routing dropper post? If yes can you explain how to as I tried but failed :(
There is another UA-camr who also cover Giant bikes extensively and he's probably getting the same flake of being 'paid by Giant'.. People who turn their nose up at "mass market/consumer" bikes don't appreciate products which doesn't have an exotic snooty brand name yet are very value for money. I ride bikes casually, no hardcore competition racing nor downhill time trials, so frame quality is not critical but having high quality and reliable Shimano parts does. This is where Giant really delivers and if you know where to source for them you will certainly get them at bargain prices (I just bought a $960 12-speed Shimano SLX XTC 820 MTB). I have a Specialized Roubaix roadie too so I'm not biased just because I have a Giant.
Best frame i ever ridden . It supple then my enduro ht
You have a orbea oiz , I have the 2017 model
Great review. Your video saved me from my first choice of the talon, now have to decide between the slr and the talon. What Pedals do you use?
I meant to say I'm deciding now between th XTC and the Fathom.
I have always stuck with Shimano, I have tried numerous other brands and I always come back to them. I have one set of XTR pedals and another set of 520s. If I didn't clip in all the time I also like the Race face line of products. They have a good bang for your buck factor and they have always taken care of any problems some friends of mine have had. Thank you for supporting the channel!
@@MichaelRichardson-yg5qo Same here! To make things even more complicated for me I've got a Gt Zaskar added to the choice of selection! Tough decisions!
très bonne vidéo 📼 📼
Can you update us on how the crest 34 is doing now? (a lot of people have been complaining on a clicking noice)
I haven't encountered the infamous clicking noise myself. I have heard a lot of people in the comments talk about it so I have been paying closer attention to them when they do come in.
je posèede un xtc slr 29 1 de 2023 et je peux dire que c'est un trés bon vtt rapport qualité prix et performance, je prends beaucoup de plaisir lors de mes sorties en club !
Bikes are going to be like guitars for the next couple of years. Buy a base model and build it up to your liking. You definitely have to be the early bird or have something on order for a season or two to get what you want. Impatience always wins out....at least for me it does.
I completely agree. Some of the brands I have talked with have even called off their demo tours for the year because every bike they are getting in are pre sold.
How would you compare this to the fathom 1 2021? I can't seem to understand what each model aims for. Thanks!
The fathom leans much more toward the "trail" side of things. It's a slacker bike with a little more travel. The XTC is geared more towards XC style riding and will be lighter bike. Both are great!
@@MossieRidesBikes spot on I guess. I'm currently with a Fathom 2 2020 but I feel that my riding style and routes would be more suitable to a XC style bike because I'm not riding trails all the time, instead I ride a lot of loose gravel/rocky/muddy routes with a good amount of climbs a not all those aggressive/technical descends... For now the Fathom is working really well, lets see when I will need 'more bike' ...
Awesome review! Placed an order on the XTC SLR 1 model and would have it arrive next month. How does it feel going down hill?
It's an awesome bike! It tracks very well to be as light and nimble as it is.
What is the handlebar length on this one? The specs show 740 mm, but in the geometry table it shows 780 mm
These were 780s but it wouldn't surprise me if a few of them had 740s. Availability on certain parts as been so hit or miss I'm sure Giant is throwing whatever they can to ship the bikes out. I think some of the smaller sizes may have shorter bars on them as well?
@@MossieRidesBikes Thanks. 780mm is strangely wide for an XC bike.
@@matrigs I've only had my hands on two of these so far and both people that bought them had the bars cut down after one ride
is it air fork or spring ?
It is an air fork

Mossie Rides Bikes
For reference, how tall are you?
thanks
I am 5'11. I normally ride a large in Giant.
@@MossieRidesBikes May I know your inseam as well? Do you think Large is too big for you?
@@AlfieChan my inseam is a 32. I prefer to ride a large over medium in a giant but I can make the medium work.
Which is better trek xcaliber9 or that bike
Giant XTC Had Thru Axle vs.
X Caliber with drop-out quick Release.
Trek X Caliber Frame simply sucks, Dropout quick release can only be found on Old Bikes or Budget Bikes or Low-End Entry Level Bikes.
X Caliber is simply Trash
I’m having a hard time deciding between the XTC SLR and the Fathom 2. Do you have any suggestions/input on the differences in geometry ?
Same here
Haha you aren't alone. For me it was XTC SLR 1 or a Fathom 2/ Laufey H30. I've had a XTC so I know what to expect but the other 2 do have different geometry to them. SLR 1 is £1650 UK (cant find a SLR 2 over here anywhere) where as the other 2 are just under £1400 UK. The terrain Mossie is on is primary where it would be used, with the old gravel/road trip here and there.....choices.
Also in same place Fathom 2 or XTC SLR. I'm a beginner what would be recomodation...
I believe Fathom is more to trail bike and XTC on the other side is an XC bike..the geometry is different..
Wait but What year is the giant xtc slr 29 medium in the black color? 😂😂
Haha, I noticed that 😂😁 ahem* 2021 ahem*
is this xtc slr 1 or 2?
2
O just buy a fathom 1 29 2021 I will,get the bike in 10 days I need a review of how it rides
GIANT FATHOM 2021 😎 FIRST RIDE REPORT! 🙏
Weight?
11.8 kg
THINKING ABAUT BUYING A RACE ORIENTED HARDTAIL, THIS ONE AND THE CHISEL ARE ON MY RADAR,,, ACCORDING TO GIANT WEBSITE IT COMES WITH A SRAM SX DRIVETRAIN AND I PREFER SHIMANO DRIVETRAINS, FOR BUDGET BIKES AT LEAST
Mine is in Shimano Drivetrain
it comes with slx/xt in euroland
Стоит покупать такой или лучше взять Фатом ?
Take Out The Lock Out Cable
Just notice that you dont have the stock tires and wheels, you have a max speed maxxis in front aspen in the rear and DT swiss wheels, so not the most accurate way to test a $1300 bike
stock setup is recon race in 2,25 exo, and fairly light wheelset weighing in at 4700 gramms with slx casette and cheapo rotors- this is totally in the dt Swiss X 1900 ballpark- only the shimano 400 hubs are arguably inferior
