【ほかない】
to have no choice but
"ほかない" is similar to "しかない" and emphasizes there's only one option (A). It means "there's nothing other than (A)", but it's more about emphasizing you can't do anything else but (A), rather than just stating no other choice exists. It is used when you have a feeling of giving up.
There is also the phrase "～しかない," which is similar in structure to "~ほかない" and can be used interchangeably with the same meaning. While "～ほかない" is slightly more formal, "～しかない" is more commonly used in conversation.
バスもタクシーもないので、歩いて帰るほかない。
→バスもタクシーもないので、歩いて帰るしかない。
Since there are no buses or taxis, I have no choice but to walk home.
【ほかない vs ざるを得ない】
The phrase 'ほか(は)ない' expresses the limited options available due to the inevitability of the situation, often accompanied by a sense of resignation or inevitability.
The phrase 'ざるを得ない' expresses a conclusion that has been reached inevitably, but it denotes a passive matter for the speaker, something they reluctantly accept or must comply with. It conveys a sentiment of having no choice but to do something, even though they may not want to.
◯そこに行くのは歩くほかない。
☓そこに行くのは歩かざるをえない。
I have no choice but to walk there.
It expresses the notion of limited options without the accompanying feeling of resignation or inevitability.
◯子供が待っているので帰らざるを得ない。
☓子供が待っているので帰るほかない。
I have no choice but to go back because the children are waiting (even though I want to stay).
It signifies having no choice but to do something under certain circumstances, despite not wanting to do it.
痩せたいなら運動するほかないです。
If you want to lose weight, you have no choice but to exercise.
大学選びは、最後はやっぱり自分で決めるほかない。
When it comes to choosing a university, ultimately, you have to decide for yourself.

Question about this phrase i saw. Dialogue is doctor is talking to a severely injured patient:
生かされ…応えたというほかない
I’m not sure how to interpret this sentence with た past tense verb + という and then with ほかない
“You were saved / allowed to live… I have no choice but to say you responded (to that)” I’m not sure if this would be accurate way of reading this.

生かされ… : This is indeed the passive form of 生かすwhich means "to save" or "to allow to live."
応えたというほかない : This is a more complex part. Here's the breakdown:
応えた : past tense of 応えるwhich means "to respond" or "to react."
という : This literally translates to "to say," but here it functions as a way to connect the previous clause and express the speaker's conclusion.
ほかない: This is the key part. It's a negative auxiliary verb meaning "there is no other way to say it," "one cannot but say," or "it can only be said that."
Putting it all together:
The doctor is essentially saying:
