Verb + にすぎない
いAdjective + にすぎない
なAdjective + (である) + にすぎない
Noun + (である) + にすぎない
It is used to say that a subject is unimportant, not significant, or of such a low degree. It is often used with words such as 「ただ (just)」「単に (simply)」「あくまでも(merely)」「ほんの (barely) 」
A is just B; All it is; All A is B
【～だけだ】
彼女のアイデアはただ他の人を真似したにすぎない。
→彼女のアイデアはただ他の人を真似しただけだ。
Her idea is nothing more than a mere imitation of others.
韓国語ができるといっても、簡単な挨拶が話せるにすぎない。
→韓国語ができるといっても、簡単な挨拶が話せるだけだ。
Even if you can speak Korean, it's just limited to simple greetings.
【「～にすぎない」VS「～だけだ」】
The difference with "～にすぎない" is that "～だけだ" does not convey the speaker's sense of dullness or low value.
〇ちょっと手伝っただけだよ。
〇ちょっと手伝ったにすぎないよ。
I only helped a little.
「～だけだ」 cannot be used for noun.
〇私の給料は、ほんの３万円にすぎない。
×私の給料は、ほんの３万円だけだ。
My salary is just a mere 30,000 yen.
However, "～だけだ" can be used for past tense nouns.
〇単に幸運だったにすぎない。
〇単に幸運だっただけだ。
It was simply a stroke of luck.
今の時代、子供を持つことは人生の選択肢の1つであるにすぎない。
In today's world, having children is just one of the choices in life.
ちょっとうとうとしましたが、ほんの２、３分にすぎません。
I was dozing off for a moment, but it was just a mere two or three minutes.
田中さんはあくまでも同僚にすぎません。恋人なわけがありません。
Mr. Tanaka is nothing more than a colleague. There's no reason for him to be a lover.
A：「具合が悪そうだね。大丈夫？」
B：「単なる寝不足にすぎないので、大丈夫です。」
A: "You look unwell. Are you okay?"
B: "It's just a matter of being sleep deprived, so I'm fine."
