She is IMO a reverse Black Prior.
they both use kite shield and a smaller version of their faction's initial vanguard weapon.
They both have an all guard that's used to set up unblockables.
BP is the only fantasy themed knight, whereas Varangian is the only historically accurate viking in the game.
That's actually a pretty descent assessment.

Something that I want to highlight about what they dubbed the "Legacy Pass" is that they will be adding new weapons to the pass for heroes that weren't out when that battle pass came out. One that I'm most excited for is being able to get a weapon for my Warmonger themed around the y4s1 "Hope" battle pass, excited to see what that's going to look like.
They'll be adding like 25 weapon sets if I'm not misunderstanding them

Still good to see a Viking that finally has actual armour rather than the mixture of leather and chainmail some have e.g Warlord. Though I kinda wished that the lore alluded that the Varangians served the Roman Emperor of the For Honor universe since the Roman Empire of For Honor still exist if Centurion lore is anything to go by.

I'm glad old battlepasses are coming back only one I ever bought was the first one but was too busy at the time to finish it so I'll finally get my moneys worth. That said idk why they dont make all the battle passes permenantly available, just let me pick which one I want to level but make it accessible whenever, limited time content sucks.

Little HA for a heavy (then again lots of strong CC options)
No undodgeable attacks (which is kinda crucial seeing as a majority have tons of dashes and dodges)
Pros:
Strong defense with lots of CC options
Good mixup and combo intensives
Chain attacks have the unstoppable trait (attacks that can't be stopped by a simple block)
Simple and EZ to learn and master
Finally a Viking with Great Fashion options and a Full-armored one at that
A HEAVY class
Her heavy hitboxes will probably catch empty dodges.

I really hope in the future IF they stop adding heroes, that they will start work on removing gender locks, Id love to play as a Female Warlord, or a male Warmonger. (Of course the gender locks bound by history and lore is fine like PK, Valk, shugo, gryphon, etc are debatable, I'm 50/50 with those) Most of mains are female and I often choose female characters in games, so her being gender locked is fine with me, I just heavily believe in player expression. That being said its a bunch of work to do with models, armor refits, animation refits, voicelines, like its a bunch of work so its unlikely, its essentially making an entirely new character. I don't think people will mind too much if they halt new characters for a bit to knock down these few walls that restrict player expression. I'm super excited for the new character and I'll def be returning to the game in Feb.

A quick edit; The Problem isn't with the character, its an issue that has been around since 2017; Now its also a resource issue, the FH team isn't nearly as large as it was back then so them getting the resources to do this now is unrealistic to say the least. Just me on my hopium lol.
The skrmish maps are super awesome, I wanted to play them in dominion mode for years. I wish they could use the forrest map, because that map has the most unique atmosphere.
Now we need a Kievan Druzhina to match this Byzantine Varangian

People in the comments tend to forget that Ubisoft has not made a hero with two genders since Zhanhu due to hiring two voice actors and making two models for new heros is just more work on the plate.
If it was me all hero’s would have both but it seems that’s not going to be the case anymore, if it cures your anger the next hero will be a dude though.
Pretty much this; Chances are the developers would love to make it interchangeable for all Heroes, but they can only do so much with the situation they're in. They've got the budget for CGI trailers again, but marketing is it's own department in most industries and rarely applies to the ones in the trenches working on the product.

We dont have the full lore for this season yet so im not gonna judge it yet, but so far i gotta say that the lore for this season has been really solid. Theres really nothin wrong with it outside of some people's person preference (some of the suggestions for a different maddox being dog crap) overall not my favorite lore but definitely the more better written lore.
The lore for this one is average, but I really want to know what happened to the Byzantine Empire in this universe. (Given they didn't get fully wiped out until 1453 when Ottoman cannons leveled the walls of Constantinople, though the building blocks for their collapse were already happening for over a century prior to that.)

Plus, the reskins aren't even balanced. Zerker got the same set retextured 100 times in a row. They barely reskin the sets we received during marching fire.

The hero is genderlocked not because of representation, but the simple fact that they would have to write 2 characters instead of just one. I don't mean modeling design, I mean lore-wise.
Every new playable charactered introduced after year 2 that wasn't genderlocked had 2 image characters (or main characters, whatever you wish to call it) with lore of their own.

Well, to be honest, the only pass I want to return is the DBD one. I got the outfits for the Vikings and Samurai, but I missed the knight ones. If for nothing else, but for the color palette and the blood splatter coloration.

What a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of the what I'll call "DLC" characters that have been released over the recent years are individual characters/people with their own story and design that the season is building up to or based off/around, which makes them gender locked. because there is only 1 of that person. (e.g there would never be 2 of Holden Cross/Gryphon or 2 of Ocelot as they are there own individuals with their own story and design.) Essentially the base game characters and fair amount of the future DLC characters that were released later are not their own individual characters as there are many different wardens, orchis, raiders and warlords etc that are made up in the battlefield. But within the past few years for honor has been much more story driven with the release of their characters and they tend to focus the story around that one Character that has been released. (hence the gender locking of that character.) I do think they should add more inclusive characters that aren't gender locked so that people can have their own personality and creative freedom with their characters, but I also like having the individual characters with their own story as well. It's just unfortunate as of late that all the last 4 or 5 characters have been gender locked, Although adding hero skins that tell the story lore for characters has definitely helped a bit as they don't have to make entirely new characters for the storyline. I'm very 50/50 with the gender locking and depending on the character and their story it definitely could be a hit or miss for me, but I'm really fucking excited for this Varangian Hero compared to the last few that have been released. just a little rant :)

To be fair, a male would be much more filling not only stereotypically, but also historically. If we just accept her as an average varangian and not varangian guard, then it's fine. My biggest issue with her is that she only has one stance and not really pretty face, but I will Play her

I honestly love playing the Varangian so far. My only complaint about the gender lock is that i like role playing and the female voice always reminds me that my stupid RP requires a little bit more imagination on my part lmao.

They're alternating genders for new heroes. Next new hero will probably be male only.

But a female Mongol hero wouldn't be THAT bad either since we had female Mongol warriors in history so it only makes sense, though it would make more sense to have em be male and female.

Agreed, at minimum if you set in genderlocking at least lock factions to their historical genders, rather than just randomly slapping shit together.
I’d prefer customization, but I also prefer a world with female Valkyries and male Varangian Guards if I have to genderlock.

Losing things from factory reset should only apply to games that have a save file. Like Skyrim. Unless its backed up to Cloud Storage (PS plus).
Most games are saved through your account though. Meaning you can buy a PS5 and have all your progression saved.

Gebderlock characters aren't really a big concern to me compared to all else we should get instead. But I do prefer non locked characters
I really couldn't give a shit about the heroes being gender locked as long as they don't go woke or smth and decide to do more female than male
As of right now there are 12 male genderlocked heroes (Lawbringer, Gryphon, Centurion, Warlord, Highlander, Shugoki, Aramusha, Kyoshin, Jiang Jun, Shaolin, Medjay, Ocelotl) and 9 female locked heroes (Peacekeeper, Warmonger, Valkyrie, Shaman, Varangian, Nobushi, Nuxia, Afeera, Pirate).
As of now there is a three hero difference. If they stick to their current pattern, it will always remain this way. Only if they went one year with both heroes being female would the gap truly close...and I just don't see that happening.
Honestly, super stoked for Varengian Guard, but the gender lock is a bit silly imho. And in a non-political way. Gryphon, Warmonger and Pirate somewhat make sense as those are unique characters, but the rest being genderlocked is just *laziness, to not make 2 separate bodies and tweak armors* Aramusha as wandering ronin could be female, fem-shugo, for the female oni stand in. etc. etc.
And Varengian guard defo should be both genders, and just the default being female (setting up a slot for a unique skin for her)
Other than that - Greece woo! Fingers crossed for hoplites.

i came back to For Honor, saw the trailer and i was like ''damn, i forgot about this game'', i spent around 1,500h on it lol, but i stopt a while after jorumgander came out.
This just feels like what would happen you took away BP flip and gave him a Valkyrie Shield Bash on all sides I can really care less about the gender of the character I kind of already foresaw this by reading the daily missions more or less

the problem with the gen lock its not a political or incel thing, its more simple than that
the character itself, the vibes they has in the design, the big and estoic they are... it just doesnt fit with the female voice, it sounds so... afeera, so female when the character doesnt have that vibe, it just a weird desition

Personally I'm a bit miffed as a viking main since beta. Asking for historical armor or a historical character for years. Being passed over and left behind once. Only for them to finally give us not jorm, not shaman, but an actual armored varangian (most requested viking since launch). And its fem only. And all the viking armor is still trash this season. Its like they tried to appeal to one audience before doing the opposite. Of all the characters to make fem-locked, the heavy shield and axe wielding varangian guard doesn't seem like the right choice.
In the universe of for honor it makes sense because everyone throwing bodies at the enemy so female varagian guard makes sense because there are female knight characters etc etc. but yeah there should be a male but whatever at least there is a actual byzantine character.

And more accurate but it's modern gaming and it fits the games thin lore of throwing bodies at the opposing force I'm not a 100 percent with it but nothing can be done about it Because Ubisoft is trash.

in the warriors den, they specifically say any superior block. which would include the crushing counters as well

Yeah, I won't pretend that isn't annoying. I hope next year takes a different direction.
the lore could be so much better. if Maddox killed her father to save people by joining horkos she might come back after running away in fear of her life as a child to kill Maddox but in their fight Maddox gets a chance to explain why he did what he did and that it wasn't out of spite. he might even say that he searched for her after she ran away to make sure she's ok. it would be hard for her but she would forgive him if he agrees to turn on horkos. that way we would get a story about care and forgiveness and misunderstood intentions but also a "spy" in the ranks of horkos with Maddox reuniting with Katla. this way she would have a personal reason to fight this war and she would be a contact between Holden Cross and Maddox. this would also shift the war in favour of chimera.
That would be an interesting direction to take. However, the problem there in is it leaves a few holes:
1.) If she returned and turned spy under Maddox, how do the Varangians as a whole fit in? The whole method by which they arrive is her joining them.
2.) Why would Maddox spare her? He felt no issue killing her father, and even seemed proud of it, as the lore states that his body was dragged through the town and left on display as an example. Seems to me he held little care for his former brother.
3.) Proposing an aspect of forgiveness would counter the idea of an undercover spy aspect. If she's forgiven him and been brought around to his way of thinking, why would she turn on Horkos? Wouldn't she stand with her uncle's way of thinking?
I'm not saying the idea isn't interesting, but there are issues that need addressing.
@@RavenKnightYT yeah i can't undo the bad writing ubi did. I just proposed what would be a better way of telling the story if they actually wanted Maddox to be the one who wanted to join horkos. And i think you misunderatood the spy thing. The point is that she would come to him wanting to fight and during the fight she would forgive him (assuming that the whole humiliation of her father didn't happen and that Maddox didn't resent him) and convince him to turn on Horkos. So the whole story would be like this:
-Horkos comes with the ultimatum
-Maddox wants to join them to stay alive and keep others alive
-Maddox kills his brother not because he Gates him but because Maddox thinks that will save lives
-Katla runs away because she doesn't understand why Maddox did what he did
-Maddox joins Horkos
-years later Katla comes back with Varangians to kill Maddox
-in their fight Maddox could kill her but choses not to and explains why he did what he did (maybe he regrets it after all those years under Horkos)
-she realises that Maddox wanted good just with bad methods and believes Horkos is the true problem not him
-she convinced him to turn on Horkos and be a spy
That way she has personal motivation to fight the war and both brothers turn out to be good guys just with different views. The Varangians could just be hired by Chimera. This is an idea that the story could've gone and actually progress the lore but the devs seem to just go with an endless war shit. I have no idea how to expand on the story they provided (with Maddox as just outright bad). I would prefer Maddox to be a good guy that realises he made a mistake joining Horkos rather than outright bad dude. With my story idea there would also be room to expand the relationship between Katla and Maddox in later seasons and make them more important to the lore than just "Horkos/Chimera recruited new warriors"

Now I'm not one of those people who is gonna get mad just because she's female gender-locked, i just feel like gender-locks in general ruin the immersion for people. I'm not just talking about the female gender locks either, i mean all gender locks as a whole, for both the male and female players.

Gender locks only make sense for certain characters. Like Nobushi and Shugoki. Or Valkyrie and Gryphon. For the others it would just feel better for them to switch, because unless the lore specifically states that a group of warriors is specifically an only male or only female group it should not be gender locked
Yea but Varadion Guard is historically mostly male and it would just be right for for honor to have it male.
@@RavenKnightYTI'm not sure about Medjay, but I don't see any reason for Ocelotl to be genderlocked. I don't feel like, for example, Highlander should be one too - because since we have a female Raider, why can't we have a female Highlander? But the Varangian Guard is the one character that I am really furious about, since I can relate to that character so much, but can't make it my gender. Teaser with lots of Varangians with both male and female voices giving hope only made it worse though.

Personally I don't like the genderlock but only because whenever there isn't a genderlock we get to see a different variation of armor and different voice lines, I like to hear how they pronounce certain things like for example raider when youre doing a zone
I think we have genderlocked heroes because they just don't have the money for another VA and a (in this case) male mocapper + the male mesh and work to adapt the armor

The reason, from what I’ve researched, that they’ve been doing genderlocked characters for the past 4 years is due to “consistency”. I get it, consistency is important, but so is audience satisfaction. That and they have broken consistency many times in terms of order of release. In year of the harbinger all but 1 of the heroes were heavies which isn’t consistent. Year 4 they released 2 knight heroes instead of 1 knight and 1 samurai. And you’d think they’d release 2 samurai the year after and 2 Vikings and Wu Lin and so on, but nah they decided it breaks consistency. So I don’t buy that whole consistency tbh despite their motives.
I’ll be frank though, I have very little problems with genderlocked heroes. Unless it seriously perverts the historical reference behind in, then I don’t have a huge problem. Warrior women did exist. Perhaps not as frequent or rare, but just cause it’s rare or scarce, doesn’t mean they never existed. Thats like saying kyawthuite is a very rare and hard mineral to extract therefore it doesn’t exist.
Anyway, I’m pumped for this hero. Despite the flaws, the Varangian Guard is gonna be awesome!!!
This mid title update was a let down to be honest. For Honor devs could've broken the gender-locked cycle for a moment because it's been too long and people are kinda sick of it. But also within the other content we got like the variations are not aa good as I was hoping, a bit more chainmail for the Vikings but it didn't happen. And there was no new armor set for anyone this time too so. My only suprise was that Highlander got a variation on one of the new sets he got immediately and the Black Prior event coming back because I've waited on that one. As for the maps people have been asking about we'll see, we asked for new maps but they said "converging" maps so we don't know what that will mean.
I'm absolutely excited to play this hero. Finally, a properly armored, historically authentic Viking! For me, she automatically earns her place at the very top of the Viking tier list.
Even during the stream I was already formulating a backstory for my Varangian - Lady Stiorra, the daughter of a Varangian Commander hired to reinforce Chimera, joined by members of my homebrew legion seeking to convert and recruit them to their crusade. Upon being ambushed by traitor Varangians bought off by Horkos, the commander is killed and Stiorra is left an orphan. She is then adopted, raised, and trained by my Black Prior - Sir Vulcan, The Vengeful. Once she comes of age, she has her birth father's armor refitted for herself and carries his axe into a Crusade to hunt the traitors responsible for her father's death!

Im happy for another year of For Honor. But when are we going to get cross progression already. Ever since I built a PC, i have no reason to play on my xbox anymore. Ever since the CCU update, it has become a living hell to play on old gen. And i refuse to buy a new gen xbox just to play For Honor. I have 400 plus reps and hundreds of dollars spent on steel, I want to keep playing, but i dont want to drop another $500 for a new console and throw all that progression away. We have cross platform, so why dont we have cross progression. I want to keep supporting the game, but how can i do that if they wont support the fans?
I think its about history with her being a varangian guard. A group of male warriors with female members being hearsay. As for past gender locked heros they are their own character like griffin and warmonger not based on a specific warrior.

Not surprised but we don't like it. Simple. I don't understand why the community has been so quick to attack people who dislike genderlocking (not saying Raven is attacking). Imo this is a good sign that a lot of people are interested in the hero concept because the backlash is bigger than when pirate black beard dreams were dashed. If people voice their opinion then maybe ubi adds both now or in the future. Or worst case scenario they don't. Regardless, the people commenting "incel" on every request for a male varangian (perfectly reasonable desire) are just being assholes.
As I've said many times (and in the video) I understand people who are disappointed with the genderlock. I get the frustration. I do wish we'd had a male variation, honestly. And I wish they wouldn't genderlock every hero.
But, as I've also said, throwing a fit about it and attacking others like myself who don't mind her being female is a step too far and wildly inappropriate.

That’s also not hypocritical. I’ve always wanted warlord to have a female variation to fill the typical shield maiden. I’d wager the reason people aren’t immediately calling it out when it’s male genderlocked is simply because the player base is 90% male and it just doesn’t impact them at the time. There’s a difference in being “hypocritical” with your stance on genderlocking and just not being motivated to comment.
Another reason this is likely getting larger than ever, and my personal gripe, is that this is the first Viking with pretty good armor that the “historical accuracy” crowd has been requesting. I feel confident saying that crowd overlaps with the “I prefer male” crowd for a few reasons.

Jacklyn I just got from Jack Sparrow, and also cheering a friend up since he was disappointed that it wasn't male pirate (he wanted to be Jack Sparrow). I told him "Just call her Jacklyn Sparrow" and he said no.
I always never cared for gender lock. And as the years have gone on I stopped caring as much about fashion, I more prioritize that a char plays well and is fun. This char seems a bit like BP simple and easy although I assume her 1sies isn’t as good as BP, I’ll still be playing her though.
I kinda just don’t like the axe tbh. Feels too long to be comfortable or balanced and she doesn’t appear to use two hands to even justify it being a short Dane axe rather than a hand axe
I agree the axe feels rather long. I think in her rush attack animation she does grab it with both hands, but I could be wrong about that. As for the reason? I would argue it's for the purpose of range. When hiding behind a shield, using a short reaching axe is a detriment, as the shield restricts your reach. You have to move the shield aside to capitalize on offensive reach, which takes away from defense. But still...I get the issue.
@@RavenKnightYT I would argue that the shield is small enough that it wouldn’t be as much of an issue as it is for even BP but I didn’t really think of that part of it. Even so it just feels bizarrely awkward and doesn’t make sense because you wouldn’t want to use it one handed much lower down the haft than a normal hand axe due to poor grip strength and leverage
This one really kinda pisses me off, cause everything is done well, and seems well researched and well designed, but then for some reason they genderlocked it, and not only did they genderlock it, they genderlocked it to the WRONG GENDER.
I’m a history nerd, especially about historical warriors and warrior factions, so I was excited as hell to hear the Varangian Guards were coming to For Honor. I saw the design, redownloaded the game, and was excited for them as it seemed the guards were taken seriously, and well researched, and designed well. Then I learned the Varangian Guard would be gender locked to female, why, why is it gender locked to female. Why is a historically entirely male faction now represented by exclusively women. There is no fucking reason to do this, they clearly researched the Varangian Guards, they would have known that not only were they male, but they were male with specific signifiers that were established, such as a Ruby earring in the left ear, hair kept long, and gold dragons sewn into the fabric of their Mail. These are the things I would have loved to see, not only make the guards male, cause it is an entirely male faction, but also give them these identifiers.
The fact that research was clearly done into this unique and rather obscure faction, only for it to be disregarded with one important detail seems ignorant at best and malicious at worst.
I get that the game is fantasy, I fully understand that, but some of us who play enjoy trying to have some historical accuracy, not equipping crazy effects and wild executions, preferring to try and make realistic characters and designs cause we enjoy the history. Those like me who enjoy the more historical elements don’t exactly have tons of other options for a fantasy warrior game so we make do with a game like For Honor. I get that this isn’t everyone and that’s fine, but for those of us who do prefer it this is a kick in the nuts. I wouldn’t have minded if it was available across both genders but the fact that the historically all male faction CANNOT be represented as male in this game currently is baffling.
We even have other genderlocked heros, some of which makes a lot of sense, the Valkyries being all female makes perfect sense, the Mejay being all male also makes sense, but for new characters why not have them have both options for one, but otherwise why not at least abide by history of your going to genderlock something. I’d be just as mad if Valk was genderlocked as male.
Those who don’t care, won’t give a shit what gender the character is, but those who do enjoy history are negatively impacted for no real reason aside from the ignorance or malice of the designers.
Let alone this being the third femal genderlocked character in the Viking faction, like come the fuck on.

What bothers me is when Gender lock doesn’t make sense with newer characters. I can understand warmonger being gender locked because they try to emulate Apollyon, I can understand afeera because they were hand picked bodyguards. Pirate being female only doesn’t make sense to me because it makes me think that no male pirate ever existed in For Honor’s lore, Kyoshin doesn’t make sense because, if I remember correctly, they are a secret group made up of kids born at a certain time and somehow they’re always male, and the Varangian doesn’t make sense to me because they’re a band of Viking mercenaries not some secret order like the warmongers or peace keepers so how does a mercenary band end up only female? You could reason it away as special selection but it will never make sense to me why self described mercenaries would be so picky. Suspended disbelief will only go so far.
Varganian Guard was more then vikings,...you got Kieven rus as the early majority but soon other culture groups had joined. A lot of Slavic groups at the same had many become part of the varganian guard.
Also there were female members just it was a minority [historians have found Varganian armor buried with female bones].

What makes it worse is that the Varangian Guard were exclusively male, they were literally only dudes. This is like making the Valkyrie genderlocked as a dude. I’d prefer not genderlocking any character so everyone can customize to their own pleasure, but if we can’t do that can we at least try to be faithful to history rather than following some obscure pattern.
I don’t care about equality here I just want faithful representation of historical warriors.
If were taking accuracy into account. There was hardly any accounts of norse female warriors, let alone those in the varangian guard. It should have been a male if only one gender was allowed but both if if could have been.

Agreed, like the whole genderlocking thing is dumb, it’s a game that should allow players customization, especially on gender which impacts many who like to see themselves in their character.
However if we are gonna stick to the narrative of genderlocking, then can we at least go for the most faithful recreation of the historical faction and warriors we can get? I don’t care about equality here, it genuinely doesn’t matter, let’s just recreate the factions as accurately as we can rather than following some obscure pattern.
Why the Varangian Guard stirred up so much of a fuss is cause it was a real established faction that was entirely male. Representing it as female is an insult to history and is equivalent to representing the Valkyries as male when they were historically all women.
No other hero prior to this faced this issue and blatantly disregarded history in such a manner, there was always a way the gender given made sense. Here it is just blatantly wrong for the reasons you described.
This should be called out and I’m glad I’m not the only one who is annoyed by this.

I can’t say I see it as woke, it is a pattern as you described but it is silly. If your going to have historical factions represent them well to what they were, if it was a male dominated faction then make the representative male, if it was a female dominated faction then make a female representative.
Sure this may not lead to equality in the number of both genders, but honestly I care little about equality here, it frankly doesn’t matter. I just want to see cool historical warriors brought to life in a faithful manner.
If only women based groups were used and thus represented as women I’d be happy as well.
Overall the genderlocking thing gets tiring and limits customization, and I’d be happy to see them take some time and unlock all the genderlocked characters, but if we are stuck to the notion of genderlocking characters I’d at least prefer they tried to be faithful and accurate to history rather than following a pattern.
Genderlocked heroes is lame, let me have the option to choose. It especially sucks since with the outlanders, they've always gone the opposite of what I would have wanted.

I admit, I can see easily how it can be construed as a political thing for the Varangians to be female gender locked in the game, although I wasn't expecting there to be a historical precedent for varangian shield maidens. Personally, it made me realize that perhaps this alternating gender lock for heroes is a cost saving measure. One mesh for armor, one voice actress, so on and so forth. Very disappointing, and I imagine the only reason we don't have any criticisms besides the gender lock is because we haven't had time to play her. Wait for TG, and we'll have everyone dissect her and form critiques on it, precise and, well...

You do realize that for honor has more male locked heroes than female right? I don't hear people complaining about them. It's always the female locked heroes it's more double standards. I don't care either way if a character is gender locked, I just care if the hero is unique and plays fun.

I'm a mazimum character customization kind of guy, because I like it when people go on about stuff like "This is my Orochi, she uses coal tar to disguise her visible skin so she can assassinate rivals to her daimyo with more anonymity" and "This is my Raider, his parents were slaves from Roman lands who became a freeman and woman", that kind of jazz.
I just expect it's a consequence of For Honor being a very backburner game from the Ubisoft bean counters POV, so they're operating on barebones funding to make a new hero or two, a few armor sets, etc. with very little that can convince their overlords to give them more resources to spice things up. I imagine that's also why we've gotten barely any new maps, let alone new maps for Dominion or Breach, the cost for design, implementation and testing would be too much with their usual load.
And like I said, I don't know how the Varangian plays yet since we only have a teaser right now, so I can't really fill my pants in a rage over information I don't have. Personally, I expect she'll be OP in testing grounds, and tuned down to acceptable or meh come her official release, not out of political brouhaha but because that seems to be how it usually goes with For Honor releasing new heroes. If I wanted to be extra cynical, it could be them having the hero OP so loads of people buy her at the start, alongside the typical "must consume the new thing" FOMO stuff, only to make her okay when the hype wave starts wearing out.

Well I think the frustration, or at least my frustration not only comes from genderlocking but how this one is just a blatant disregard for history.
Genderlocking is dumb in general and I wish they would take time to unlock all heros, personally I like mine matching history, but that’s not everyone and customization should be available especially on something like gender.
The reason I and many other history nerds are annoyed at this one is cause it’s just disregarding the faction it’s supposed to represent, and thus representing poorly. The problem with the Varangian Guard here being female has nothing to do with the actual gender or being female. The issue is that historically the Varangian Guard were a real and established faction, a faction that were entirely male, there were no female Varangian Guard thus representing them as female is inaccurate and disregards who they were.
This wasn’t an issue for previous releases cause they either matched the gender of the faction or it could be reasoned why the given gender fit. Here we know the Varangian Guard were all male, so making the game version locked female is just dead wrong historically, and doesn’t allow those like myself who enjoy the historical aspect of these warriors to play them in a manner that’s accurate.
If we are forced to have genderlocked characters then I wish the devs would focus on just creating accurate representations of the faction at hand, instead of following this pattern blindly.
Instead of new hero’s and skins I want them to go and change gender locked characters to male AND female I like making both and as a guy I do prefer playing male characters just because I can relate more

I don't think it's hating on the vikings...I mean consider Meiko's season last year. That was a specifically samurai season, showing samurai beating up corrupted samurai. I think it's the same here.
