Am both enjoying and understanding your presentations. Must commend you on the VERY helpful graphic, historical evolutions and explanation of the math-elements.
Thanks so much and please don't get discouraged by the view-count; I have been a YT viewer for many years and it is 'them' controlling what happens. Your videos definitely 'make-the-grade' and I usually can always spot a deficiency here or there but your videos are very comprehensive and well thought-out.
    Thanks Again & 73... 😊

Thank you for the encouragement! I am happy to be a blessing to my viewers ... however many (or few) there may be. :-)

3:42 Huh, I regularly do real time DFT's on sub $5 processors, but yes, computationally more expensive than an FFT.

Hmmmm, well I got my information on that one from the Rhode and Schwartz book on Spectrum Analyzers, as I recall. Processors have come a long way! We can a LOT more amazing stuff with them that were just dreams in the past.

@@eie_for_you So true, and DFT's give you the ability to pin point specific frequencies where FFT result in fixed bin sizes at fixed intervals. The ability to pinpoint a specific frequency (seems like it would be) better for making something like a guitar tuner. Which I haven't made yet but it is on my list of things to do.

Awesome video thank you. so the DAC "speed" is a big constraint to how fast the SA can preform and it dictates a lot about it's accuracy, right? I still remember part of how the DSP math works, but for sure it was the hardest subject to understand and use. but very rewarding you when see it working.
on other matter, if you have time, take a look at the spectran v6, i think you will be impressed with the capabilities .

I am glad you liked the video! :-) I did look at the Spectran v6 and it is pricey ($8K). My Rigol DSA815-TG is $999 and gets me from 9 KHz to 1.5 GHz which covers everything I think I will ever need. It has served me VERY well.

Your production quality is great and the care and thought that has gone into this series really shows. I wanted to share a youtube that demonstrates another way to visualize the Fourier saw wave approximation. I've watched it so many times I can run the mechanism in my minds eye or whats left of my minds eye anyway
I think this is the saw wave and the poster Brek Martin has another similar video but it is the square wave

Hi Guys :) This is an updated version of an animation program variation written in 2015, and updated in 2018, for Fourier Series Saw Wave Approximation. A new circle is introduced for every second rotation of the original circle. The colours of the waveforms are rotated so that the yellow wave is always the newest iteration, and for that reason, there is a peculiar quirk for every odd wav gradient. Old spectrum analyzer don't use FFT filter or any digital one! The signal is not directly translated to low frequency but upconverted first then converted to a lower frequency.

Yes, I know this and I acknowledge this at the beginning as I tell folks that there are two camps.
Then, I give the hetrodyne concept a much more complete treatment starting at 7:38. I start with the purely analog versions, show how the digital versions work in this camp and then talk about the hybrid versions (like the RF Explorer) which uses a hetrodyne front end and an FFT back end. This presentation is based on the Rhode&Schwartz book "Fundamentals of Spectrum Analyzers." 🙂
