  • 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham Junkyard Find. Always a bittersweet moment when I find another 78-88 abody / gbody in the junkyards. I am a fan of these cars, especially the 78-80 models, with the 80 Monte being my favorite for obvious reasons(I own one). in my opinion, the 78-80 Olds Cutlass looked better than the 81 and later models. I was really digging the green on green goin on with her. I also liked the sun roof option that I rarely see on a gbody. I'd love to have that on my 80 MC but I just don't have the heart to cut a hole in my roof.

    RARE, RARE, RARE!!! Whoa Nelley. The power sunroof option was not ordered that often, and this one is loaded. I spot PS, PB, PW, PDL, cruise, tilt, regular two speed wipers (CD4 delay was an option I believe), optional V8 engine (I was expecting a 260 V8 VIN "F" Olds 2 barrel to be honest) AC, the 8 track, power seat, the Brougham option, and the wire wheel covers (grab those...I had them on my '79 Cutlass when I owned it from 1990 to 1993, it was my sister's car from 1985 to 1990).
    When we get the VIN, we win. If we had the (cowl) tag, we could brag.....VIN is 3 for Oldsmobile, M for Cutlass Supreme Brougham, 47 for two door, H for 305 V8 with 4 barrel (optional engine, very rare to see, I had a parts car with it), 9 for 1979 model year, R for Arlington TX assembly, and the rest is the production sequence. The original exterior color appears to be code 44 Medium Green. Yes, as others said, it looks like "appliance" Avocado Green. My own kitchen appliances are still this color. People will ask why don't you change them? The machines are clean and they work. When they need repair, they are easy to fix myself and parts are still available for them---even though they are from 1968 and all are Magic Chef, except the fridge, that's a GE. The local appliance parts shop would ask me "why I was putting money into an old appliance". I said, "Every 15 years even if I spend $100, I would have changed them 3 times already with newer ones or spent twice that in parts to fix them myself, and these still get the job done". I think that's a 1980 Reagan/Bush bumper sticker as the '84 version said "Reagan/Bush '84".
    Berg Motors is out of business as of 2019, but it's now Sewell Buick GMC and it is located at: 3205 W Wall St, Midland, TX 79701. 2 speed wipers on a full show brougham is crazy... someone must have missed that option. I guess maybe the Rally wheels would be the only other thing missed. At least they went with the wire wheels.. I bet you it was a stunner when it was new. I love the green paint.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 4 роки тому +1

      @@markj2838 More options could be had: "C49" rear defogger, other higher cost radio options (CB, cassette), possibly a power passenger seat, maybe a lit vanity mirror. As others have said, possibly a sunroof which I think would have been higher cost. Maybe a towing package of sorts, possibly a block heater (although you wouldn't need it in TX of course), but yes, pretty loaded up.

      Love what you had to say about your "Avocado Green" kitchen, would love to see that. Shame the Olds wasn't taken care of. But those things probably weren't in demand back in 91. Wonder who would throw a bunch of cans in the engine bay in 93ish. Ah well, miss the green tho. I've seen modern Hyundai and Toyota cars in some kind of light green, especially the Konas.

      @@nathankim7664 Regular looking kitchen, really. Back when appliances were made with real US steel. In fact I believe the back of the wall oven has the "US Steel" logo on the back outer wall (from what I remember when I had to take it out of the wall to do a repair). As long as they work, look decent and parts can be had when they need repair, I will continue to keep and fix them when I can. I just had to replace the 1987 Whirlpool made Sears Kenmore dishwasher because the tub rotted out. Wasn't worth me repairing it, so I replaced it with a new Whirlpool made Kenmore in April 2019. The '87 Kenmore only needed minor repairs over the course of 30+ years and I did all the repairs myself.

    Midland Motor Company was owned by Rudolph "Rudy" Berg who started it at the Wall Street location in 1956. Mr. Berg died in 2010, he was 93. According to his obituary he had a degree in petroleum engineering and was active in Berg Motor for fifty years, so he may have been the one that ordered this car for stock for his inventory back in 1979 or may have been the person to sign off on the deal with the original owner. I would have had to think that the person that bought this new may have ordered the car with these options, or it was a higher end car on the showroom floor to attract traffic. I would think it was a real looker when it was new and I agree, the green is quite striking.

    I always liked the style of these. This one was in nice shape when it was parked almost 30 years ago. The odometer has probably not been around. The rodents and the weather did it in with assistance from that vinyl top. It would be interesting to know what the story is as to why it was parked and sat so long. I'm guessing something failed on it and whoever parked it did not want to take a depressed value for it and said that they would fix it someday. Well someday never came and here it sits awaiting a not so far off date with the crusher.

  • @rickloera9468

    That was one nice Cutlass back in 79. I know the car is sitting low because of flat tires, but see how diminutive it looks next to those two SUV's. Those are compact SUV's and they still look massive next to that Olds. I am surprised the plastics inside that car have held up so well. Usually they've turned to dust by now. Too bad this one wasn't one of the lucky few to have been saved to show future generations what a loaded Oldsmobile Cutlass looked like in real life. This would have been a hit at car shows. Back then a sunroof option was pretty expensive so not many around from back then. Now it seems.like half of the cars have a moonroof (glass). Sunroof was metal. My brother had a 1978 Ford Fiesta with a removable or pop up sunroof. It also came with a glass panel that could be switched out. Moonroof makes more sense then a metal sunroof. With glass you can pull the shade closed when not in use, or at night you pull the shade back and still enjoy it without having to open it.

      It's a 305 boat anchor. I'm not sure anyone would bother. A 305 these days is only good for someone that has a nice ride but does not want to hot rod it, but just wants to cruise and have it look the part when you pop the hood. You could probably get about 300 HP out of it, anymore than that, it's simply not worth putting in the money.

      @jdslyman My one fridge in the house was a housewarming gift from my grandmother (my Dad's mom, who died in 1980) when my parents bought the house new in 1968. I fixed it once in 2000, for $35, a thermostat was needed. Great machine, you won't find GE making them like that anymore, that's for sure. Back in 1967, they were proudly made, and made well in "Appliance Park" in Louisville, KY.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 4 роки тому

      @jdslyman Probably R22 back then, R12 was usually for automotive AC, but yes, it's nice to pull out a glass bottle of NYC tap water and have it be ice cold. Refreshing. I never buy bottled water, always keep some bottles of tap water in the fridge. I have a 2005 Whirlpool downstairs too. Was my grandparents and we brought it here when we sold the house in 2016.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 4 роки тому

      @jdslyman Yes, Sears Coldspot, but probably from 1976, not 1977 as by '77 they stopped using the Coldspot name, although you could have bought a "leftover". Those were the "106" model prefix models, and the 106 denotes that Whirlpool made it for Sears. I know the style you're talking about. Yup, those things were tanks. My parents had a "106" Coldspot AC unit in the dining room. The compressor was massive and it used a 30A circuit. I had to replace it in 2010, it finally just gave up the ghost and it wasn't worth repairing. Back in 1982, we knew a Sears tech and he came to take a look at it as it was making noise. He was an old timer and said, "The case is sagging it a bit. Prop it up with a wood block and it should be good for a few more years." Those "few years" were from 1982 to 2010. LOL. I replaced it with a Friedrich unit, same capacity and it fit the opening perfectly (using the new sleeve of course). I had to just swap over the outlet as the new unit was 20A, not 30A. Easy to do. That old Coldspot was a beast of a machine, it would eventually shoot frost out of the vents if you ran it long enough. The fan was whisper quiet and it would put you to sleep. That was when you could get quality products from Sears, that's for sure.

      It's the other way around. Sunroofs came out first and were metal. Moonroofs were glass and came out sometime in the mid 70s. In this era at least on American cars, even though the roofs were factory options, the actual work was outsourced. One company called ASC (American Sunroof Company) probably did the lion's share of them. This one being a 79, I would have thought it would have had a moonroof. Perhaps at that time they still offered both or were only doing moonroofs on Cadillacs and Lincolns.
      Moonroofs I'm sure are cheaper and faster to make as they would not have had to paint match the panel.

    Those were plain looking cars. A lot of cars looked plain starting in about 78. Long bodies were pretty much gone.

    I never liked the 1978-1980 Cutlasses. An overtly cheapened and decontented car versus the 1977 it replaced. I didn't like the engines offered. 3.8 Buick V6. 260 cubic inch Olds V8, and the Oldsmobile 5.7 liter V8 diesel. All using the horrible GM THM 200 transmission. The Cutlass wouldn't become great again until the 1981 model year. Those looked great! Those had the Oldsmobile 307 V8 which was a great engine. The 260 wasn't bad. Just slow. The Chevrolet 305 was a top tiered engine for these cars. It too had the thm 200 trans. At that time, it was a sin to stick a Chevrolet engine in an Oldsmobile.
