I´ve always thought about "Se quiere, Se mata" as a statement song about safe sex, the lack of sexual education and clandestine abortions, that can be very dangerous, and can even kill the woman. If you see the video you would realize that the "doctor" Dana goes to end her pregnancy is not really a doctor, she goes to a clandestine "clinic" and that is why she dies.
The taboo that exists around young pregnancies and abortions in Colombia/Latinamerica is still heavy, and in 1995 was a subject completely unspoken about. So, clandestine abortions are sadly more common that going to a actual hospital to safely get one, just because of the social and moral mark that a thing like this would leave on a girl/woman. This song was revolutionary and way ahead of its time.

Also about “Se Quiere, Se Mata”, as a Spanish speaker, i don’t find it to be anti-abortion or something, it tells a story that could be real to tons of people to this day, abortion is still illegal in many regions in Latin America and is shame people like Danna die for not having professional medical help to get an abortion.

"Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos" is a critique of society. She's not talking about Eve or Adam specifically but about humanity in general, how we take our decisions, blame and even demonize others but victimize ourselves (you bit the apple and gave up on paradise, you condemned a snake when it was you who took the decision), how we sometimes don't truly care about other people or the future, how we built this society full of judgement, criticism, rules, prejudice (that why she lists all those "rules" at the end that you kinda have to follow to be considered a "good" person: say hi to your neighbor, go to sleep at a certain hour, work everyday, only speak when you're supposed to, only feel what you're supposed to, not have bad thoughts, go to school, not be a loser, always wear shoes, etc). It's a critique of all those nonsensical rules and how we try so hard to be those perfect people, how we care so much about what others think but we don't really truly care about the things that really matter sometimes.
    Classic Spanish rock song.

I get so excited when I see people realizing how talented actually Shakira is.
I think she is really underrated outside of Latin America , as a songwriter and a versatile artist. Her most commercial songs sometimes overshadow her deep cuts both in spanish and english songs, it’s so fulfilling seeing other people reacting and truly appreciate her masterpieces

The first single was Dónde Estás Corazón. It was released before the album in Colombia as part of a compilation featuring Colombian rock bands called Nuestro Rock (Our Rock), a bit of a shock for those who were familiar with her earlier material, and then became her first hit outside of Colombia when it was playlisted by 92.9 FM in Venezuela and then released in a compilation. This early release was pushed with a video clip that, as far as I'm aware, was only played in those two countries (ua-cam.com/video/bx1n3cHfeU8/v-deo.html).
After Estoy Aquí and the album became a hit in Latin America, the song was re-released with a new video (the one available in her official UA-cam channel).
At some point Estoy Aquí was also slightly remixed for the European and Brazilian market and 2nd video for THAT song was also made (ua-cam.com/video/ClSq9pZnr4A/v-deo.html) but unlike Dónde Estás Corazón, the original version of Estoy Aquí is the one available in her official UA-cam channel as of today.

I hope my comment is well understood, because I am still learning English.
My interpretation of “Se quiere se mata” is a social critisim:
Some families in Latin American (in case of Shakira Colombia) are so religious and think that having children out of the marriage is deplorable; Some young ladys ends without the support of their family, when find out they’re pregnant (Shkira mentions that in the choirs: During tea time nothing ever happens
    Oh oh oh
You just will go far away from home
    Oh oh oh
Because you brought one more inhabitant
To live in this rotted city
Where whatever is not wanted, is killed... is killed)
Dana was scary about how her family would react, so she went to a doctor to make an abortion but in the process she died. the abortion decriminalization in Colombia was in 2006, Shakira must wrote the song thinking Dana went to a clandestine place to make her abortion.
I love the reaction, Gettins from Mexico.

Antología is one of those songs that is just SO lyrically beautiful in Spanish, it makes you emotional. As someone who's bilingual, I think most Spanish speakers who have heard this song can agree with me that translating this song will never have the same effect as the Spanish lyrics no matter how great the translation is. It's sad that the translation can't do the song justice but it also makes me feel so incredibly thankful I speak and understand Spanish to be able to understand this song how it is intended.

Another Fact: Donde estas corazon? Was the first song that she wrote for this album. After the fail of "Peligro", Sony Music gave her a last opportunity to make a hit, if she didn't, she would lose the contract.
Then, they choose her to participate in a collaborative album called "Nuestro rock vol.2"" literally it's called "Our rock". Then, she wrote Donde estas corazon? And was a hit in Colombia, then, she decide to make a new album, and then she maked Pies descalzos.

@@SalRocha It’s always controversial especially for an artist to move onwards from her previously “set” course of artistry.
A lot of her Latin/original fans were put off by her crossover attempt. They saw it as her sexualizing herself and selling her rock artistry for the English market.
Whatever. I’m glad she crossed over-she’s literally the most successful Spanish crossover artist. And she gained even more millions of fans in the process.

Pies Descalzos has quite complex songs because at that time Shakira also made songs of social criticism and talked about issues such as religion and abortion.
This is her first official album and it was a success in Latin America and the United States. My favorites are "Estoy Aquí" (I'm here) and Antología (Antologhy) ♥ ️
I recommend you analyze the lyrics of "Antología" well because it is one of Shakira's flagship songs and a classic of Spanish music 👌🏻
If you liked "Pies Descalzos" 🌻 I'm sure that the next album 'Dónde están los ladrones" (Where are the thieves) is going to enchant you and it will blow your mind, that's why I recommend you pay close attention to the lyrics.

The reality of “Donde estás corazón” was that it was originally released in 1994 only in Colombia (with a music video only for Colombia) when the album wasn’t even out yet, the song was a super huge hit in Colombia so that’s when the record company said Yes to make a new album (pies descalzos) and after “Estoy Aquí” they decide to promote “Donde estás corazón” internationally and with a new and different music video.

ABOUT THE MESSAGE OF THE SONG "SE QUIERE, SE MATA": Shakira in an interview in the 90s talks about the rejection that always had the already established norms that we all fear and respect, for which we are capable of sacrificing what we more we want in this life .. The lyrics of the song imply that they (Braulio and Danna) loved each other and if it weren't for pressure from conservative society / family, Danna would not have had an abortion .. therefore she would not have died. Danna being a "good girl" probably getting pregnant so young would ruin her reputation, that of her family and seeing herself under that pressure and without the support of anyone saw no other way out. Shakira does not talk about her thinking about abortion, she uses it as a metaphor. we are capable of giving up many dreams for fear of what others think and even more so in a conservative family. I hope I have been understood, my English is not the best but I try hahaha

In Pies Descalzos, she's singing about social and religious conventions. So she's "mad at Eve" because she's singing as if she's one of those people who follow those rules in society. The whole song is about what society expects from women specifically, and Shakira defying and criticizing those expectations and being a rebel.

In Spanish "qué velas cargo en este entierro" is a saying, it's not literally about a burial, it just means kinda like what business do I have here (thus "what candles do I carry in this burial"), so she's just saying she doesn't know what her business is there anymore. It's not literally about a person passing away, but it definitely is about someone who's not there with you anymore.
I guess you could sing it for someone who died though. :(

Anthology is a great piece, its lyrics are like a poem that's why many people love it, I think not all the lyrics translate well, you should react to the live of this song on the El Dorado world tour and see how people connect with this song, I think that this album is the only song that she continues to sing on her tours.

In fact the song Pies Descalzos is refered to adam as "the humankind" not womanhood, and she criticizes how men (human) creates their own miths and opressive cultural traits without thinking about the consequences... and then complaint about them "y ahora estas aquí queriendo ser feliz cuando no te importó un pepino tu destino" she says "and now you (human) are here wanting to be happy when you didnt even cared back then about your destiny".

It’s unfortunate that the true lyrical poetry of her work can’t be fully appreciated in English-you’d have to learn Spanish first 😭
Her phrasing, lyrics, tonal emphases and vocal delivery on specific moments just give her songs something extra, which was why she basically exploded throughout the Latin world with the album.

Se quiere se mata is very up to interpretation. I believe on a personal level Shakira would never have an abortion but in general is pro-choice. The song is more about teen pregnancy and how back then and even now is shamed within latin communities so much so that it leads women to seek out unconventional ways to get an abortion which hence leads to a botched abortion that leads to Dana’s death in the song.

I never even took into account how different it would have been to have an abortion in Columbia vs America in the 90's. Thank you for the info!

Dana died during the abortion because in the city where she lives they are very conservative and they don't believe in abortion. She got pregnant out of wedlock and that's a no no. Shakira is just the narrator, but she's not saying she's anti-abortion, she's merely saying that in that place they kill whatever they don't want, and Dana paid with her baby's and her own life. I used to sing this with my friends when I was 9 or 10, not knowing what this was really about until years later, lol.

Oh and the translations you're using seem to be too literal. For "Se Quiere, Se Mata" the line about tea time in the chorus would be better translated as:
"But if at the moment of truth nothing happens / you will just go far away from home". It's the story of a teenager getting pregnant and fearing the reaction from society decides to get an abortion, likely in a clandestine clinic and ends up dying because of it. She's once again criticizing how people place too much importance in what others think when at the end of the day people don't really care.

I concur, also for women "tea time" (tea calms menstrual cramps) so if at tea time nothing happens Dana will run away from home

Shakira hated 'peligro' and refused to promote it. She wanted to start over from scratch. Label released it anyway. So, she got a job on a soap opera. Then, she decided to open a foundation for abandoned orphans when saw them in the street while filming. She opened up the Barefoot Foundation, which is why she named her next album that. She was only willing to do the last album if the corp. suits left.

In “se quiere se mata” Shakira talks about a social issue in Colombia which was back then and still is now: abortion. It is not her who was planning to have one, but the girl in the story. Sating that that what becomes a problem needs to disappear according to the world’s standards.

Terrible translations, and of course it isn't your fault, I think you did great but it is not fair to grade an album as meaningful as this one using online translations.
Her songs are already odd in Spanish as it is haha but in an intelligent way... I hope you can find better translations and song explanations in the future. Up until 1999 she was referred to as the Latina Alanis Morissette, so it's interesting that you mention that haha.
