She should receive more recognition for her actual smart critical mind instead of her body sexy persona. That's why I love her old stuff way more, she definitely had that mixture of edge, folk and pop charisma that made her unique. 😎❗
Costume Makes the Clown is said to be addressed to her fans that didn't like her changing her image for Laundry Service. There's references to Whenever, Wherever ("told you I feel lucky with my humble breasts") and her conforming to beauty standards ("hope I didn't hurt your self-esteem"). She says she didn't mean to let anyone down, but she just took the opportunity ("the costume makes the clown") and she won't mind if they stop liking what she is now ("it's your time to cheat on me").
Thanks for the history lesson! I didn’t know about the island named Timor and what had happened there 😢 You’re reactions so far are great, this is the second review of yours that I watch Ima try to catch up with the rest! Greetings from Mexicali, Mexico and you’ve got a new subscriptor
Hips Don’t Lie, although Shakira tries to pass it off as some dream she had about working with wyclef, was really added to help the slumping sales of Oral Fixation vol. 2. Don’t Bother was the official lead single and those of us who love that Shakira is more pop artist with a rock side to her love that song. But La Tortura was still doing so well when Don’t Bother was released that unfortunately Dont Bother barely hit top 40 or maybe even barely missed out. The thing about American and English speaking listeners back then at least when it comes to pop artist they wanted dance tracks, etc and this album is so not a dance album. That’s why Hips Don’t Lie is so disconnected with the rest of the album. Shakira was going more for a rock, 80s alternative type album.
I don’t remember her trying to pass off the song as some dream. She’s always wanted to work with Wyclef since his Fugees years, since she recognized him as a talented artist and a fellow Caribbean. Yes, the song is an older cut from an OST, but she worked on it, added her touch to it, changed the song title, and the rest is history. It may not have been hers originally, but boy did she put her stamp on it for the books.
@@JTLI90 I remember her specifically talking about a dream she had about working with wyclef, not just like it’s her dream to work with him. No she spoke about a literal dream she had that she worked with him and lo and behold she got a call from him. That may have happened I don’t know but considering that the original release was not doing very well and then they release it with this song I’m inclined to believe that she made that up, sorry.
@@ShakEvan She tends to romanticize stories that she shares. And the album wasn’t a flop; it just didn’t do very well compared to the previous release, Fijacion Oral, Vol. I and it’s massive lead single and subsequent success. The lead single, Don’t Bother, peaked at 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and saw moderate success. But it wasn’t enough for Epic Records, which expected a hit (they went so far as to tell her that her album had no single-worthy tracks). So months later, the label got her Wyclef Jean’s Dance Like This along with Wonder, a thankful Shakira reworked the song with them, and the rest is history. The album was re-released with two tracks that didn’t sound like they belong, but at least it garnered better sales in 2006.
Finally, I was waiting for this reaction, cause this album is my fav, don't bother is a amazing song, the video is fantastic, for me it represent perfect the album so for me is the perfect lead single. I love how shakira is talking of different things this time, not just love and unlove. I love you by the way😍🥰
Yes, Hips Don’t Lie was NOT part of Oral Fixation VL2 at all… Shakira asked her manager to release the next single but he DECLINE and told her there were no singles on that album 💿 so her manager called Wyclef Jean to do a remix of ‘La Tortura’ and he was like, 'NO! I have this record ‘ Dirty Dancing’ (Havana Nights) with Claudette Ortiz that I really think if Shakira comes in with me and we redo it, I really think it'll work.' I think it just missed in 2004 because it wasn't promoted right and probably the right artist (Shakira) wasn't on the record. I guess my instincts were right.". And BOOM 💥 Shaki and Wyclef Jean worked together, and she came up with Hips Don’t Lie, changed some verses, some sounds and it became THE BEST SELLING RECORD OF THE DECADE 🤗🔥
Shakira's lable said "no one cares about that hips don't lie song and it would flop, they told her "no one wants to hear about colombia on an American radio" , Shakira pushed hard and convinced them that she feels the song will be a hit even though it has elements of salsa and cumbia which is very latin and Colombian, so they had to add hips don't lie to the album
Really? According to her manager she beg him to release another single from that album 💿 after the massive flop from ‘Dont Bother’ but he said there was NONE… so her manager call Wyclef Jean asking him if he had anything for Shakira… and he literally came to the rescue and give him his record “Dirty Dancing” ft Claudette Ortiz which and then it became Hips Don’t Lie with Shakira.
@@msh1756 As the song says, No Fighting! You’re both right, in a sense, just coming from different perspectives. It’s true that her record label at the time (Epic Records) was not happy with the moderate success of Don’t Bother (honestly their fault for poor marketing) and the slower sales of Oral Fixation Vol. II, especially compared the massive, historical success of the last album and it’s lead single. It’s true that her former label told her that they felt that her album had no single-worthy track, after releasing Don’t Bother. And it’s also true that Shakira and her label worked on reworking an already released song (Dance Like This from the movie Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights) into Hips Don’t Lie with Wyclef Jean and Wonder. We forget sometimes that it’s a team effort between multiple people.
Congratulations, great reaction! Finally is here, thanks to you for do it, I loved that you liked it. One of my favorites, and you need to react to her OFVol.2's music video singles; Illegal music video is so sad :( ... Laundry Service is celebrating 20th years this week and Shakira just uploaded a special video about it... As you noted in my past comments, you should react to "La Tortura" and "No" official videos in addition to their live performances, in case of La Tortura at the MTV VMAs 2005 (First song in spanish performing at the MTV VMAs history), and NO at the Oral Fixation Tour... I'm extremely anxious about your reaction for "She Wolf" I can't wait, this album is very, very different to her previous works
I always found Shakira to be an oddity. Even when she was first introduced to the MTV crowd. She’s never been too big or small with star power. Even though my two favorite shakira albums were her 2014 release and 2009’s She Wolf. This was Shakira’s biggest star power at the time album. I LOVED a lot of the songs on this album, because of the lyrics! 🤩 Just by looking at the lyrics only, you’d get a different idea of her intention, like Don’t Bother. The lyrics sound repetitive and kinda defeated, but then you hear the song-and you get something completely different! She starts off broken, then musing, then defiant; it’s almost bipolar in the way it’s vocally delivered, which perfectly describes what it’s like going through a tumultuous relationship and then the end. Then you have Costume Makes the Clown. You can take the narrative as is, and it’ll still be a compelling story. But then you start thinking about her actual perspective, and then you realize that it could be a song to her fans, as well as a message to her past self. The fact she refers back to songs where she proclaimed certain things (being “lucky” about her small breasts, which she does have; being positive about the world changing for the better, which it isn’t; promised to stay honest with and to herself and her fans, which she hasn’t been sometimes), and then juxtaposed with the whispered “Your turn now to cheat on me” which gives permission to the listener to do the same, i.e. free themselves from their younger expectations and to be realistic about the gray areas that life eventually puts you through. Nothing stays pure.
Those translations were written by Shakira herself, alone. I think that's why they work. The Spanglish "La Tortura" is exactly the same as the Spanish version with the exception of the chorus. In the chorus she sings in English. As always, really enjoy your reaction, looking forward to "She Wolf". Also, "Hips Don't Lie" has a Spanish version called "Sera Sera".
@@SalRocha Será Será wasnt promoted as hard as HDL, english version was a huge hit even in spanish speaking countries so Será Será wasn't promoted but vocally it's better than HDL, the song was only performed once in spanish at the Latin Billboard Awards 2006. I was shocked when I found the music video for Don’t Bother. Did a bit of digging, and then found out that the song was actually the lead single of her OFVII album (the initial release, at least) 🤯 Mind blown Hips Don’t Lie and La Tortura (Alternate Version) don’t sound like they fit in this rock-pop album. And that’s what it should have been marketed as-not as a Latin album by a Latin artist. A lot of English speaking music consumers were expecting an English La Tortura or something spicier than whatever Lopez was dissing out back then; instead they got a surprise when it was this weird blend of mostly rock-pop and ballads. It was an unfortunate situation of expectations not meeting the final product, and her record label tried to change things up by making her compromise her artistry for something that would sell better, and so Hips Don’t Lie was released. Hips Don’t Lie is a great song, but I think it broke the overall concept of the album (and broke a part of Shakira, I think). She was reaching for art, and the fact that she chose Don’t Bother as the lead single showed that she wanted to showcase a more genuine, matured side of her. This era was a victim to xenophobia 😭
I am a long-time Shakira fan. This album seemed to be her attempt to crossover as her original self, which was a rock pop Latin artist. She has always been a very political sensitive lyricist with many rock songs back then. But the American market was not open for that. So she turned into whatever she is now. I don't follow her new albums much but all her Spanish albums and Oral fixation 2 are forever in my heart.❤
i really belive that both Timor and Animal City should have been official singles from the album. they had the potential of being huge worldwide hits. it's also a pity that Pure Intuition hasn't been included in the album. it should really have been a track of Oral Fixation Vol.2
I haven't been as dedicated viewer as usual and didn't notice you took a break. I'm dreadfully sorry. Had over 60 videos awaiting me in my 'watch later' list. Am catching up though. Down to 12 now. Today is December 5, 2021. **Shamed**
Is so sad the album underperformed in Anglo-Saxon markets that she had to release hips don't lie as Americans only appreciate her belly dancing and Latin sounds. The reality is that Shakira started as a rock chick and there is so much more of her as a writer, producer, and multinstrumentalist musician. Also I always get surprised how many ignore the great vocalist Shakira is.
The problem is that Don't Bother is probably the best piece in this album and NOBODY knows about it, but Hips Don't Lie which is just a sample of a 90s song was promoted to hell and back. And now she just remakes the same basic radio-friendly formula over and over, and she's abandoned the push to promote her rock ballads.
Hey Sal! I am so, so glad to see you back on your Shakira journey! Like I told you, you'll start to see her evolution and it gets better! I can't wait to see you reacting to her MTV unplugged, as you said you were going to react to the visuals since it was filmed. I strongly recommend you to react to her live concerts as well. 'Live and Of the Record " "Oral Fixation Tour" "Live from Paris" "EL Dorado Tour" the "Live and off the record" document is also incredible, you should check it out. Well my good friend Sal (you have a gay colombian fellow here living in NYC 🏳️🌈) LOL! Thank you for your great work and for entertaining us with such amazing reactions! XO! 🌈💗🙏🌞💙
siempre me ha parecido que la voz de shakira es mas adecuada para el rock que para hacer pop, este álbum lo produjo rick rubin maestro del metal, además de que se nota el apoyo de gustavo cerati, y no solo en la canción en la canción en la que aparece
Awesome Sal, i knew you would ike this album a bit more lyrically speaking. Just so you know, Don't bother didn't do so well. Probably because it was more rock that what the american audiences knew her for. And... since the album wasn't doing so well, they came up with Hips don't lie and due to its success they decided to include it in the album. Ohhh... And BTW, you wanna hear Shak singing french? Well, in one of her tour stop in France She decided to include in the set list a very popular french ballad that has a spanish version. She sang it in the two languages that night. Je L"aime a Mourir. Please react to it.
I don’t know if you noticed but Fijación oral has Shakira as Virgin Mary and the album is mainly a lovely bunch of poems to love in it’s pure way, and in the other hand Oral fixation has Shakira as Eva or Eve and the songs are more bitter and more like protest and critics the humanity, politicians and even God. I mean that’s how I see it Ahaha
The song "Don't Bother" is my favorite Shakia track of all time! So edgy and so much attitude. It sounds a bit like the band "The Cranberries" with the yodeling. Such a shame this single flopped on the charts. It seems that the audience is biased and can't handle a Latina releasing rock music. They just expect her to release cliche Latin music...
It was still a moderate success; I wouldn’t call reaching #42 on the Billboard Hot 100 a flop. It’s just badly seen because it kept being compared to the massive release of the previous album’s lead single (La Tortura).
i love “don’t bother” but it’s odd how shakira can literally do everything the other girl can do. (cook, speak french, is fat free, etc.) the only thing that’s off is her being almost 6 feet tall. lol
She has mentioned time and again how bad of a cook she is. Referenced in songs like "The one"(kitchenphobia), Inevitable (preparar café) and Que vuelvas (aprender a cocinar)
I had the same reaction with Timor lol! It was like…. Oh what a catchy and funny melody and then mmm wait, what is Timor and what happened there…. So made me feel like a fool, anyway I love the song
My personal top: 1.- Don't bother 2.- Animal city 3.- Your embrace 4.- Illegal 5.- How do You do 6.- Timor 7.- Something 8.- Costumes make the Clow 9.-Dreams for plans 10.-The day and the time 11.- Hips don't lie 12.- Hey you
Costume Makes the Clown is actually dedicated to her fans. She's rejecting the sexy blond bomb shell persona from her previous record and some people didn't like it, so she felt like a clown wearing a costume (a sexy costume) and she was being more authentic during the oral fixation era.
Wrong! Hips don’t lie release was before illegal. Hips don’t lie was the best selling single of 2006 and the decade. Illegal was released end of 2006 as third single
@@eduardocastillo4949 hips don't lie was not part of the oral fixation 2 it was added after the fact because don't bother flopped. You can research this if you don't believe me. I never said hips don't lie wasn't a hit. It's shakiras only bill board number 1.
@@ericgil1266 I know that! But your comment says illegal didn’t chart… so she needed an emergency hit. Which your trying to say that after two singles she has to Include hips don’t lie.
Thanks for sharing all that info!
The day and the time and something are not traductions indeed. They are very different lyrics, that's why the sound very solid in both languages
I agree Diego!
Until the release of this masterpiece I really liked Shakira. This one made me worship her, it`s for me her best album, love it!!
YAY
This is her best album. Por Dios! ❤️
:)

Hola sal... Volviste 😈🍻
Hola!
me encantó tu reacción.
:)
i really belive that both Timor and Animal City should have been official singles from the album. they had the potential of being huge worldwide hits.
it's also a pity that Pure Intuition hasn't been included in the album. it should really have been a track of Oral Fixation Vol.2
I agree
The Day & The Time and Dreams for Plans !!
Yas
Thanks 😏🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Welcome 😊
I haven't been as dedicated viewer as usual and didn't notice you took a break. I'm dreadfully sorry. Had over 60 videos awaiting me in my 'watch later' list. Am catching up though. Down to 12 now.
Today is December 5, 2021. **Shamed**
Welcome back!
Sal, If you can, please make an ABBA Discography journey, they have hidden gems in their albums
It's tempting!
Great reaction and brilliant album 🔥👌🏼
Thank you and yes!
I AGREE!
XO! 🌈💗🙏🌞💙
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching!
@@SalRocha Anytime my friend! 🤗
siempre me ha parecido que la voz de shakira es mas adecuada para el rock que para hacer pop, este álbum lo produjo rick rubin maestro del metal, además de que se nota el apoyo de gustavo cerati, y no solo en la canción en la canción en la que aparece
:)
I must check that out!
You're gonna love Don't Bother video, I bet!
Okay!
Oh just so you know, most of her videos are in HD now so, you know, if you ever decide, I don't know, maybe, yeah
Slay
Did you ever listen to La Tortura (Shaketon)? It's a completely different track to the original.
I haven't
@@SalRocha it has really cool production
@@SalRocha You should!
How do you do! A great song. Love it. The lyrics are great. PROTEST against god
Slay
I don’t know if you noticed but Fijación oral has Shakira as Virgin Mary and the album is mainly a lovely bunch of poems to love in it’s pure way, and in the other hand Oral fixation has Shakira as Eva or Eve and the songs are more bitter and more like protest and critics the humanity, politicians and even God. I mean that’s how I see it Ahaha
:)
She's gotta point!
(cook, speak french, is fat free, etc.) the only thing that’s off is her being almost 6 feet tall. lol
She can't cook lol
@@beapin3283 i could’ve sworn i saw some sort of video with her holding a pot at home. maybe it was jlo. lol
@@alexandervelez9507 She made pancakes on ig live.... truly a disaster XD
She has mentioned time and again how bad of a cook she is. Referenced in songs like "The one"(kitchenphobia), Inevitable (preparar café) and Que vuelvas (aprender a cocinar)
Being 6 feet tall isn't all it's cracked up to be!
You should react to "dont bother" oficial video
ok
Oral Fixation Vol2 = The Bible of the Pop.
I'm sorry for u, I'm sorry for everybody!
Why are you sorry!
I had the same reaction with Timor lol! It was like…. Oh what a catchy and funny melody and then mmm wait, what is Timor and what happened there…. So made me feel like a fool, anyway I love the song
Awesome
The last album I enjoyed from her
:(
My personal top:
1.- Don't bother
2.- Animal city
3.- Your embrace
4.- Illegal
5.- How do You do
6.- Timor
7.- Something
8.- Costumes make the Clow
9.-Dreams for plans
10.-The day and the time
11.- Hips don't lie
12.- Hey you
Thanks for sharing!
🥰🥰
:)
You should react to Shakira's cover of "Je l'aime à mourir" from his Sale El Sol World Tour.
Noted!
You’re gonna love Sue Wolf aka her best
I can't wait!
Shakira actaully speaks french (She speaks 5 languages) and she has a French cover called "Je L'aime à Mourir"
Beautiful
Costume Makes the Clown is actually dedicated to her fans. She's rejecting the sexy blond bomb shell persona from her previous record and some people didn't like it, so she felt like a clown wearing a costume (a sexy costume) and she was being more authentic during the oral fixation era.
Gotcha!
Sal, do You have Instagram?
Yes, I do! @SalvadorJRocha
Why don't you have a Shakira's poster in you background???? 😡
i get the feeling he only became a fan after he started reacting to her. that wall has been there forever.
She will be added once the journey is complete!
@@SalRocha great!!
Don’t bother. You have to look at the video !
Okay
This albums first single wasn't a smash hit and illegal didn't chart...so she needed an emergency hit and so that's how we have hips don't lie.
Thanks for sharing Eric!
@@ericgil1266 I know that! But your comment says illegal didn’t chart… so she needed an emergency hit. Which your trying to say that after two singles she has to Include hips don’t lie. So maybe write better next time. Hips don’t lie was added to oral fixation vol 2, 4 months later. By the time illegal hasn’t been chosen as a third single
@@eduardocastillo4949 long story short "hips don't lie " was not apart of the original project. Don't get me wrong oral fixation vol 1 and 2 till this day stand as her best albums, it's a masterpiece.
Just wait till Shakira recovers from this horrible break up with pique... she's coming.
I CAN'T WAIT!
Hope you remove A.K.A from your wall and put Shakira instead ☕️😌
HAHAHA
So sad HDL is a big hit, but theres a lot of better songs
True
Tracks 7-9 are among the least memorable Shakira songs, in my opinion. This has strong peaks but is way less consistent than FO V1 (and DELL)
oh Illegal is boring too. They sound too adult contemporary, like music VH1 would have played in 2003
Pon portada de álbumes de Shakira atrás de tu fondo d Elo contrario dislike
¡Pronto estará en el trasfondo!
