I like when he does his little dance routine. It’s like he’s mocking Charlie’s mother to her face.
This made me realise that Grandpa Joe sat in bed for all those years and let his family wallow in poverty. Then he hops up just to go to a damn candy factory.

Looking back, Grandpa Joe was a bit of a right piece of work, really. He really could have been helping his daughter or his over-worked grandson support the family instead of sitting in bed like a slacker, only to get up and dance about at the prospect of free candy. It showed he was capable to do it. His daughter should have twonked him one if she wasn't so nonchalant and forgiving. And he was the one who encouraged Charlie to steal the lifting drinks (which nearly killed him and his grandson), get pissed off when Willy Wonka rightfully denied them their prize because of their crime, deny agreeing to any rules when he knew they did agree to them and be prepared to betray Willy with the gobstopper after throwing a hissy fit. At least Charlie was a good boy and had a conscience and returned to it, which led to him getting the prize in the end. He got away with so much here and the film made the audience feel like that all the things Grandpa Joe was doing was okay because he was portrayed as lovable and twinkly-eyed. I must remember this is Roald Dahl and not to taken too seriously. Jack Albertson sure knew how to portray naughty characters who got anyway with everything. Grandpa Joe is just like a live-action Amos Slade from "The Fox and the Hound", who Jack also portrayed. That character nearly, and probably, should have been killed by the bear who was simply protecting her territory and possibly cubs, if the fox had not had the conscious to come to his rescue.
That is the most intricate dissection of that character that I think anyone has ever or ever will give. Bravo lol

Jack Albertson who played Grandpa Joe was 63 years old when this movie was filmed. That means Grandpa Joe was laying around in bed all day since he was 43…
His character was supposed to be like 90 years old in the book. So he was lying in bed for like 20 years. So thats since he was 70.

It's a shame Charlie didn't take his mother to the factory. I have a ton of sympathy for Mrs Bucket. This video does a flawless job at explaining why there's so much shade thrown and hate on Grandpa Joe. Although Jack Albertson did a phenomenal job portraying the bad characteristics of Grandpa Joe. I must give him credit. I get why everyone felt bad for the mom when she wasn't asked to go to the factory. She was the one who bent over backwards for making ends meet as the steady breadwinner in the family and how selfish, childish, lazy, immature, deceitful, and manipulative Grandpa Joe really is. Examples include, the banquet bread scene asking the unthinkable question of what difference does it make of how Charlie got the 🍞 setting an abysmal example and exposing bad role modelling for his grandson, able to get out of bed singing I've got a Golden Ticket, (Charlie should have sung that. 😤) the strength to go to the factory without a cane, the fizzy lifting drink scene with Joe naively thinking they will get away with it without thinking twice of possible surveillance cameras in every room in the factory with Willy Wonka possibly taking a quick glance at the duo drinking the lifting drink, having fun floating then touching the fan with possibly unsanitary hands and perverted Mrs Teavee. I wasn't born in the 70s, but those that saw the whole movie 35 years later innocently thinking that Grandpa Joe was an elderly man with good intentions and wants the best for Charlie like younger children did seeing the movie in 1971 that are over 50 with a different mindset. After seeing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so many times growing up, I looked at so many conspiracy theories as to why Grandpa Joe is the hidden and real main antagonist of the movie. I can't agree more with those who portray Grandpa Joe in a negative way.

In my opinion Grandpa Joe while not evil is actually a minor villain sort of. Sure he and Charlie are close to each other and he can be fatherly but he is really a jerk. He spends 2 decades in bed and claims he is not fit enough to get out of bed. And yet he does just to go to the chocolate factory. He could had helped his daughter to the housework and look after his wife, George and Georgina as well as Charlie but he is to lazy. I think he just faked his ‘illness’ to not do any work at all.

To be fair, the book's Grandpa Joe was a walking pile of skin on a skeleton. This JOe looks at least a bit healthier...if needing a chain. Perhaps he's had an old injury that made it harder for him to work? They could have at least explained that.
