I’m shocked to see how much of this movie isn’t CGI. Watching it makes you think most of it is, but the set designers were just that good at creating unrealistic cartoony looks for things

It was done well, but it most certainly wasn’t ahead of it’s time. A lot of these filming techniques were being heavily employees in the 2000s. The Lord of The Rings and the Star Wars prequels come to mind. Both used a ton of motion capture and there were many practical effects, especially in TLOTR. If you want to see a film which was truly ahead of it’s time, watch The Fifth Element from 1997. They did not use motion capture at the time, but I compare all other CGI to that film. If you can’t do better than they did in 1997, why even try?

The fact they built a whole set for the chocolate palace is insane. All that work for like a 1-2 minute scene... That's dedication I'll tell ya. Filmmakers at their craft. You might think it's stupid to invest so much time for something that wasn't in the film for that long, but you also have to think about retakes and potential set problems that could ruin a scene, so in the end...it was all necessary.
I thought the whole thing was CGI. Everyone who put this together was amazing. All the actors were brilliant too. Notably, I think Johnny nailed this character.
Tim Burton is a maestro of the visual arts... All his movies- good and bad- always look spectacular and his art direction is always second to none in his productions...
There's always a difference between a movie that mostly has practical effects compared to a movie that CGI's everything they can, even the things that they shouldn't! I find that modern movies seem to be moving in the latter direction, even movies with multimillio-dollar budgets. Always refreshing to see a modern movie use practical effects like these!

I think she is referring to something like they were so young that even if they known the renown of these people, knew some of their works and had the opportunity to learn by first hand what was like to work with them, at that time of their lives, they weren’t able to fully understand the weight that those men have in the lives and hearts of several generations that grew up with the amazing stories and worlds that they brought to life c: what a privilege to look back and remember the amazing experiences they had with them and been part of it
I love this movie. The amount of work that went into it is amazing. Depp really brought an unexpected tone to Wonka that I find mesmerizing for some reason. Gene Wilder was sheer brilliance with his characterization. Love them both for bringing two different worlds to life that I can escape to. Happy 50th anniversary to the original!

I read an interview where he said he got the voice for Wonka, while playing dolls with his daughter. This just makes my heart melt. Johnny Depp is truly a beautiful soul.❤

Watching movies like this getting made makes me realize just how much money and effort is put into making scenes like the chocolate river. All the materials, time spent filming, the creativity that goes into coming up with it and then actually making it is insane

God I was so obsessed with this movie when it first came out. I loved the special features on the DVD; you could really SEE how much effort they put into the whole production. A feast for the eyes, literally.
They did not have to go that hard on the dvd. One of the best and that's saying something because there were a lot of really well put together dvds around the early/mid 2000s.

This movie illustrates JD's talent as a character actor than almost better than any other film he's ever done. If you didn't know it was JD, you really couldn't tell. Just amazing transformation!!!

I actually... Didn't expect most of the props to be genuine props, god, they should have done five golden tickets for five kids be at the set because that's as magical and a unique experience as going into the factory must have been.
I couldn't adore Johnny any more. He is simply perfection on the movie screen. I've never had an infatuation with him as a teen idol or anything like that but every movie he played in just seemed to be flawless. He is so talented I wish I had just a tiny bit of his talent.

Absolutely incredible footage. I wish we had more behind the scenes shots like this for more movies. Johnny was absolutely brilliant in this film and I always loved watching it as a kid. As a reminder, every day after filming these scenes, Johnny, Burton and others had to go to the set of Corpse Bride to record voice lines for that film. Insane work ethic here.

They should've kept in Mike mocking Veruca, that would've been ICONIC. Plus, it's just hilarious, especially the look she gives him! 🤣 And I like that Mr. Teavee had some concern for Augustus --- they should have kept that in, too. 😕
Me too. It fit their characters in this version. Mike being a rude smartass who would make fun of the spoiled rich girl, and Mr. Teavee actually being a fairly decent guy (shame about his son).

Directing Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, etc. And producing movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas with Henry Selick and producing 9 with Shane Acker. Keep up the great work Tim, you're a legendary director.

Acting itself is fun, but the actual job of film-acting can be surprisingly tedious and very draining - lots of time standing around between scenes in uncomfortable conditions.
I loved Willy Wonka as a child, and I still remember finding out that Johnny Depp was going to be playing him in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was so excited, and when it came out at the theater, I went and watched it that day by myself. That’s the only time I’ve gone by myself to a movie. I LOVED it so much and thought Johnny was brilliant in it.

Movies like this are an all consuming amount of intensively detailed work to make! Overwhelming to see everything that is involved for each step by step scene! I'd love to see even more behind the scenes from pre-production onto post-production work. I want to know how they capture and edit the sound for that finalized polished effect. Everything involving the scene with the squirrels! Oh my that took a ton of effort! I've got to see this movie again now. It's so Tim Burton!
In the beginning of the Inventing Room scene, Wonka said "You can look around, but just don't touch anything." But here (even though it's deleted/unused scene) Charlie touched and ate some of the candy. Well but he probably asked Wonka for it.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. It was one of my favorites. So cool to see the engineering and direction behind all the cool scenes. Also, I remember being so surprised that Depp played wonka when I figured it out. The only other movies I knew him from at the time were the pirates of the Caribbean films and Rango, so it was crazy to see such a wildly different character.
He has so many mind blowing movies!! Benny and Joon is one of my favorites !! Gilbert grape and Edward scissor hands!! So many different types of caricatures and personalities !! He's definitely not your run of the mill joe for sure!!! Love him!!💞

I love this movie. The amount of work that went into it is amazing. Depp really brought an unexpected tone to Wonka that I find mesmerizing for some reason. Gene Wilder was sheer brilliance with his characterization. Love them both for bringing two different worlds to life that I can escape to.

I read an interview where he said he got the voice for Wonka, while playing dolls with his daughter. This just makes my heart melt. Johnny Depp is truly a beautiful soul.❤

Watching movies like this getting made makes me realize just how much money and effort is put into making scenes like the chocolate river. All the materials, time spent filming, the creativity that goes into coming up with it and then actually making it is insane
Amazing how everything looks like a stage and props but then in the finished movie it all looks so magical and real.
Observing johnny on set he seems a joy to have worked with, kind, quirky funny and thoughtful, and not in your face like some actors.

God I was so obsessed with this movie when it first came out. I loved the special features on the DVD; you could really SEE how much effort they put into the whole production. A feast for the eyes, literally.
They did not have to go that hard on the dvd. One of the best and that's saying something because there were a lot of really well put together dvds around the early/mid 2000s.

This movie illustrates JD's talent as a character actor than almost better than any other film he's ever done. If you didn't know it was JD, you really couldn't tell. Just amazing transformation!!!

This is the kind of stuff I love to watch because I know how much work goes into it and all the people behind the camera who are making this happen.

I couldn't adore Johnny any more. He is simply perfection on the movie screen. I've never had an infatuation with him as a teen idol or anything like that but every movie he played in just seemed to be flawless. He is so talented I wish I had just a tiny bit of his talent.

Absolutely incredible footage. I wish we had more behind the scenes shots like this for more movies. Johnny was absolutely brilliant in this film and I always loved watching it as a kid. As a reminder, every day after filming these scenes, Johnny, Burton and others had to go to the set of Corpse Bride to record voice lines for that film. Insane work ethic here.

Me too. It fit their characters in this version. Mike being a rude smartass who would make fun of the spoiled rich girl, and Mr. Teavee actually being a fairly decent guy (shame about his son).

I always thought it would be fun to be in movies, but this clip has changed my mind.
Acting itself is fun, but the actual job of film-acting can be surprisingly tedious and very draining - lots of time standing around between scenes in uncomfortable conditions.
I loved Willy Wonka as a child, and I still remember finding out that Johnny Depp was going to be playing him in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was so excited, and when it came out at the theater, I went and watched it that day by myself. That’s the only time I’ve gone by myself to a movie. I LOVED it so much and thought Johnny was brilliant in it.

Movies like this are an all consuming amount of intensively detailed work to make! Overwhelming to see everything that is involved for each step by step scene! I'd love to see even more behind the scenes from pre-production onto post-production work. I want to know how they capture and edit the sound for that finalized polished effect.

This is incredible. I love this movie so much. What a great team, production, and set
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. It was one of my favorites. So cool to see the engineering and direction behind all the cool scenes. Also, I remember being so surprised that Depp played wonka when I figured it out. The only other movies I knew him from at the time were the pirates of the Caribbean films and Rango, so it was crazy to see such a wildly different character.
He has so many mind blowing movies!! Benny and Joon is one of my favorites !! Gilbert grape and Edward scissor hands!! So many different types of caricatures and personalities !! He's definitely not your run of the mill joe for sure!!! Love him!!💞
Watched this when I was 28...still loved watching this everytime it's shown on HBO at present time...I'm 47 now😻definitely one of my all-time fave movies...still in awe of the special effects and cinematography👍💗
