I looked far and wide and took a long time but found a clear coat that doesn't dull molotow pen chrome paint(love that using that molotow chrome pen). It took a lot of trail and error and also looking at the painting community boards online but I can tell you that... E7-Color "S" Series Special Color Paint S-02 Chrome Sealer is the best type of sealant for chrome paint that will not dull. I believe that they have some videos on that online . It's very hard to come by, I believe it's from South Korea but it's a Godsend as I wanted to chrome the head of destro and cobra commander from the new gi joe retro toy line, along with some other toys. Cheers!
I've no experience in restoration and never owned this figure but this is a brilliant place to start for folk like me. I watched ebay until a really worn Cylon came up, and have now taken it apart to clean & repaint it. So easy to do this one as paint pens just make it a colouring-in job. So rewarding too as it's a super cool figure and black & chrome looks amazing. Mine had two independent arms and a body held together by 3 pegs that can easily be prised apart.
I've heard that the Molotow chrome sticks better if you spray the thing your chroming with some kind of primer spray first and then chrome it with the pen.
Toy Polloi I’m based in Southampton, my costume is all hand made so not necessarily totally screen accurate, but it does the job, and people like it. If you have a Facebook page I can send you some pics
Brake fluid is a real good stripper. Very affordable. I have used it in model railroading many times. It can be reused many times to strip with too. Just be careful as it can melt certain plastics. It can also make certain plastics brittle. Also, DOT 3 is the standard grade fluid. DOT 4 is a higher performance type fluid and costs just a little more. Another excellent video! GOOD JOB!
great video mate. You can get dotting tools used in nail art, they have tiny balls on each end, different sized balls for different size dots. They are also handy if you need a fine point with a blunt end.
The crazy thing is that I have revisited this video a year later to let you know that there is a 1/6 scale Cylon that has been released as a concept model in copper chrome (or rose gold) for silly money. I am talking approx £220 English. I don't recall a single one of those in the original BG. Once again, great video, always appreciated. If everything is up for grabs, maybe you could market the blue one 😉!!
OK, as someone who has painted plastic doll furniture, I can recommend soaking it in Pine Sol or generic Pine cleaner. Literally dump it in and walk away--however, it can lighten the original plastic--so use with caution. Does the break fluid smell?
I noticed the metallic molotow pens don't dry properly as well. Humble metalcoat is a amazing product and not to expensive, comes in steel and aluminum effect plus you can polish and buff it like real metal. Brilliant restoration really enjoy watching these old toys come back to life.
Sunflower Oil? Its not even April the 1st yet! lol you're very brave Dave, i wouldn't have even dared try it. Nice job on the blue Cylon though! I will have to get myself some of those paint pens for my Diecast restorations!
Thats a nice chroming job..thats pen works good i have 2 cylons with a lot of wear to their heads if I find one of those pens here in the states that will bring them back to life..
I have a couple of these figures and on at least one of them, the black parts have started to turn sticky. Also, with that chrome paint that you said gets dull if you touch it too much, would a coat of clear gloss protect it and make it even shinier, or would that spoil the chrome effect?
Give them a wash in hot soapy water. That should remove the stickiness. I find a top coat dulls the chrome. Just be patient and let it cure for a few weeks somewhere warm. That does the job. Cheers
I see you have the prototype ultra rare blue edition cylon that they only made 10 of and only 3 are thought to be left in existence! I can't believe they sell for £30,000 at auction! I'm going to enjoy this video! Edit:- OH MY GOD NO!
Great restoration! Have you ever come across the gold CYLON from the BSG wave 2 of figures? Much scarcer than the silver. Enjoyed this vid especially, cheers Simon
Thanks for a great video polloi. have five faded ones which I would like to paint Would also be interested to see what would happen making a gold one Question is any body doing repro rifles?
The chrome looks good, you can always use lacquer to seal it. my favourite toys of the 80s were pocketeers and top trumps also action man Britains civil war soldiers the bionic man space 1999 evel knievel the lone ranger and tonto and all the gerry anderson stuff
Permanent marker pen can usually be removed by colouring over the permanent marker with dry wipe marker. The solvent in the dry wipe will re-disolve the permanent marker. Try this out on scrap plastic to check it out!
Can those chrome pen inks be clearcoated after they have dried? If so, touching them wouldn't be a problem. I like those Cylon figures, but was always annoyed at the stupid arm positioning Mattel gave them - it's so undynamic, they can't even hold a gun in a convincing manner, or at all, generally. I used to cut and re-glue the arms to put them in more convincing poses. Some manufacturer like ReAction should produce a new line of classic Battlestar Galactica figures, I think. Their current 'Batman 1966' line is superb. I think Battlestar would be a winner for them. There are a lot of older people, like me, who prefer the original Battlestar Galactica series, cheesy though it is. The remake was no fun at all, taking itself way too seriously.
i'd say the original process would have been vacuum metalizing, no? not that these set-ups would be cheap, but if you had one, oh, man, you'd be unstoppable. then again, this channel isn't about that as much as what can be done on a practical level. otherwise i suspect you'd do a lot of 3D printing of broken bits and save a few legos, lol.
Did you ever get a GOLD Cylon? I think I have two or three from sending away with a comic book ad to Mattel...pretty sure I still have them in my NON-Star Wars figure collector case.
@@toypolloi I have all of the initial wave, but never saw Lucifer or The Boray on the shelves here in Canada. Could never figure out why they didn't release a Starbuck considering he was the kids favourite character.
A PVA clear coat might not. I think the dulling is the solvent in the lacquer melting the finish. I think a thinned with water PVA coating would protect the "chrome" without the dulling effect of the solvent. Best if applied with an airbrush but I think possible by hand....
Unless Dave is made of metal and paint he should be OK.... Some people react to its irritant nature but it isnt generally corrosive to humans...R2D2 better watch it though.
Aside from toy restoration, I like to do auto restoration too. I try to wear gloves to keep the hand washing to a minimum, but seem to always end up working with my bare hands because you just can't beat felling the parts when working on them. Wheel grease, chases grease, brake fluid, etc....none of it ever gives me a reaction as I'm fairly insensitive to skin irritants, even poison ivy.
The kid that painted the Cylon blue is an artist.
I think he looks cool with blue on him
I came here looking for this comment.
While I appreciate what Dave did to bring it back, I agree with you too.
For everyone asking, yes I have tried adding a clear coat over the top. And it dulls it to a grey finish.

I'm not gonna lie but that blue on the chrome looks pretty cool. Kinda has that darker iridescence RoboCop look to it.
Yeah, it's a one-of-a-kind. For as cheap as these figures are loose, I would have left it the way it was.
Agreed. I thought it looked kinda cool.
Best sci fi series ever that could have been a mega franchise.
I must confess I quite like the colour blue and as Customs go looks pretty good there's always fun to watch your work and very therapeutic
I'm guessing that was some kid's favorite Cylon.

My favorite line is"Hopefully Mrs Toy polloi won't notice it's missing. " . Thought I was the only one....lol
Honestly I rather like the blue color. And it has been painted tastefully in my opinion.
I've heard that the Molotow chrome sticks better if you spray the thing your chroming with some kind of primer spray first and then chrome it with the pen.
As one of the very few Classic Cylon cosplayers in the UK, thanks for bringing this little guy back to us 😬
Cool. Where do you cosplay? Would love to see your costume!

Toy Polloi: paints eye dot on Cylon figure
Cylon figure: By your command
Followed the advice in this video on a Cylon I got on Ebay that was mostly de-chromed. Little fella looks great. That Molotow pen is something else.
Very cool!
I'm glad I found your channel, while my toy restoring days are behind me, it's good to see the different methods people use.
Thanks. It's a great hobby. And you've got plenty of videos to catch up on.
Dave this was a great fix it video for the vintage Cylons....Thanks
WOW. Thunderous applause from this end, mate. And your timing is perfect too. I've been dying to restore some Cylons. THANK YOU!!!

This doesn't lighten the plastic, so I'll stick with it. No smell, and washes off. Cheers

Oil works for glue

Oh yeah getting paint of is not fun, but you did a really great job! 👍🏽✌🏽
There are some really shiny finish chrome spray paints available. Just have to tape off the parts you don't want to paint.
Great video Dave and I hope you and your family have a brilliant Easter, just don't eat too many choccy eggs!!
Thanks! And the same for you and yours.
Amazing work as always 👍
Good tips, nice video:)
Mattel Cylons without rifles look like they work in a bakery and have those insulated oven mits to retrieve the sweet breads from their oven.
Cylons before being dunked into the vegetable oil: Thank the maker! this oil bath is going o feel sooo good.
Blue cylon was cool.
Always impressive have you thought about casting the guns. And making a gold leader?.
I think we need an updated collection room tour
Mr Polloi, have you found any Metallic Gold pens that work as well as the Chrome? Im wondering about making my own GOLD Cylon from a old standard one.
I have a couple of these figures and on at least one of them, the black parts have started to turn sticky.

I have some repro weapons but I can't remember where I got them from. So they do exist.
wow thanks for such quick reply
Appreciate your time
Sorry I'm a little late to the video, but have you tried the chrome pen on the original death star droid you repaired ages ago?
I have. He looks nice.
Can the Molotow chrome finish be clear-coated afterwards to protect it from handling wear? Or would that mess up the finish?
No, see my previous replies.

my favourite toys of the 80s were pocketeers and top trumps also action man Britains civil war soldiers the bionic man space 1999 evel knievel the lone ranger and tonto and all the gerry anderson stuff
Any top coating on the Molotow makes it go a dull grey. That's why I left it as is. Cheers
May have asked this before but have you tried to do one in Gold? Any Gold Metal paint pen you use/recommend?
I don't know of a gold chrome paint that gives these results currently. Cheers

I am winning a bid on one of these.
I don't think I could have resisted severing that arm connector, so they could move independently.

And both sound like candies for me to eat.

I found one of these figures at a boot sale.
You sure you didn’t use your knife trick to “accidentally” prise the blue cylon apart hahaha 🤣🤣
The boots were black with a chrome stripe from the toe to the top of the boots with a chrome armor piece on the top of the boot

Where do you get your paint/chrome paint pens?
Ebay normally. The silver pen you can get anywhere. The chrome pen is more specialist, but there are a lot of sellers now.
Toy Polloi
Thanks!
Some were also Golden Chrome tone.
Can you not add lacquer over the chrome pen finish to protect it?
No. Any top coat dulls the paint to a flat looking grey.
A PVA clear coat might not. I think the dulling is the solvent in the lacquer melting the finish. I think a thinned with water PVA coating would protect the "chrome" without the dulling effect of the solvent.
Best if applied with an airbrush but I think possible by hand....
I'm trying to figure out why someone would paint it blue.
Ive seen worse, at least the application was fairly neat!
They need their blaster rifles. An unarmed section of Cylons looks pretty pathetic. Is their a source of repro BSG accessories?
Why not use a Molotow spray paint chrome ?
It didn't exist when I filmed this. Cheers
Have you tried giving the chrome pen a layer of clear coat lacquer to protect it?
Yes, it dulls it to a grey.
Los caballeros del tabaco xd
Apply hairspray to finish
Never handle brake fluid without gloves.
The gloves in the tv show are black
Maybe test out some spray lacquers to seal the chrome? www.wilko.com/specialist-paint/wilko-lacquer-acrylic-spray-clear-400ml/invt/0413850
I've tried similar and it they all turn the paint to a dull grey. Cheers
Ah, what a shame. Thanks for the reply.
Brake fluid is a toxic chemical and you should, in future, wear rubber gloves!
I checked, it's not. It's fine, just don't drink it or get it in your eyes.
Toy Polloi, Georgedebleu is right, brake fluid is corrosive, you should wear gloves when using it.
Unless Dave is made of metal and paint he should be OK....
