    Hey, Joe... another good one. Hope you're well. The weather finally 'broke' here in SF. It's been in the 80s, which feels great. The water has cooled down considerably. The ATMs in SF (the one I use) charges a 174-pesos fee! I trust the bank, though; that's why I use it. I always err on the side of security in MX.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  3 роки тому

      Ya those fee's can add up. I need to do this myself, check out the Charles Schwab checking account. Not sure how much money you need in it. It refunds ATM fees (unlimited? Not sure) from other banks ATM charges. So far the guys in Thailand say it works for foreign banks too

      @@EagerExpat Just a heads-up on the Schwab account. While it's fantastic to avoid ATM fees, I would be mindful of the number of times you're using it. I have heard of people's accounts getting canceled because they lived overseas and were using it as a normal ATM card, making numerous withdrawals and accumulating fees that Schwab was obligated to reimburse. Abuse of use will eventually result in revocation. I don't live overseas so I only use it during travel. For account holders, don't withdraw some nominal amount less than $100 (I typically aim for much higher). Schwab checking is the only account I'm aware of that reimburses ATM fees. It would be a shame to have an account cancelled.

      @Tyler D I've heard the same thing. It's not intended for living overseas. A Thai bank account is really the way to go. With limited use, it's a decent option. Especially if you also put recurring US charges on the card. Insurance, cell bill phone, etc.. Only foreign transactions must be a red flag at some point. I know two or three people on year 5 plus, and it's still working. Me, I'm a Fidelity guy. Just noticed you were commenting on an old Mexico video. I'm living in Thailand today. The same things apply with the card here

    Those dogs definitely will let the guard know if they find something. I remember one time a dog practically pulled the guy off his feet because he beelined to a particular car.
    I don’t think I exchanged my money in Mexico either. Back then the dollar amount was 13 to 1. Not a big deal but because I was in Mexico a while, the change being in pesos was not a big deal. But yeah, I only had small bills. I don’t think that I had any bills larger than $5. Made it easy.

    • @EagerExpat

      Yes smaller bills will mask life much easier in Mexico. Larger bars, etc.. They can change anything, but Im all about the smaller stands

    Another good practical video. Here in Vietnam where I live the exact same situation applies with respect to higher exchange rates for hundred dollar bills in good condition and so for those planning on any foreign travel are advised to have newer clean bills. In the meantime I hope your Thailand plans are proceeding. It appears that Thailand will be re-opening soon to entry without quarantine for vaccinated persons and so I suspect you will be going soon. One little pointer I share with you as the weather in Saigon and Bangkok is nearly identical... assuming you are looking for a place in an apartment block my suggestion is that you find a corner unit at around the 15th floor or higher facing the prevailing winds. This will give you great ventilation. My wife and I have such a unit and while you might think it impossible to be without A/C we have not used A/C for years. Our electricity bill is typically less than 20 dollars a month but mostly we feel healthier with fresh air.

      I had a ticket for Japan and Thailand for Sep 30 until Oct 31. I made those plans in June, hoping I'd get the green-light being vaccinated. That was a bust. I'm saving the vacation as I'll use 6 or 8 weeks on my way out the door. Hopefully done around Aug 2022. Heading to hang with buddies in Florida and Austin tomorrow. Good call on the apartment. I've tried to pick my Airbnb the same way. Although, I'm not that picky. I used to sleep like a baby with jets thumping into the deck just above my head. I've also been goofing off with a nerdy plane spotting channel. I'm a private pilot and always admired the large jets. I'll probably take my hobby overseas. Find a nice hotel room balcony over looking BKK's runway. I caught a Japan Air with an engine failure at LAX a few days ago. The UA-cam is On The Runway. Take it easy. Joe

      @@EagerExpat Very cool! My dad would take me when I was a kid to local airports to watch planes coming and going. I recall taking a World Airways DC-10 to LA back in the seventies and as it was a
      bargain flight we got off at the end of a runway to take a bus tp the terminal. That huge third engine on the tail wing towering above us was incredible. And also flying soviet era jets to and within Vietnam in the early years including an IL62 by way of Moscow was pretty cool. But the best experience was a ride on B24 Liberator in 2013 at Republic Field. I did that as a tribute to my late father who was an airman on one of those Liberators till shot down spending the rest of the war in POW Stalag Luft IV. I will look for your plane spotter channel!!

    The best is a debit card that refunds atm fees and use it at any Mexican bank once you cross into Mexico. A good one is Charles schwab, they have no foreign conversion fee too. You get VISA’s conversion rate which is as close to the true rate you can get.

      @EagerExpat  2 роки тому

      Ya, if you're spending a $100 its not a big deal. I went yesterday and did exchange a $100. I think I spend $60 in pesos. The other $40 of pesos, ill keep for the next trip. Thanks for watching

    Visiting La Paz. Never been. Should I rent a car? Is a bike good enough? I have never visited Mexico.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  3 роки тому

      I wouldn't bother. I've never took a cab from the airport. Not sure of the cost. Uber may also be a choice. Uber is affordable in La Paz. The only problem is limited drivers. They also have a cheap beach bus, etc.. It will take you from La Paz to Ballandra Bay, etc.. I've rented a car in Cabo and drove to La Paz many times. About 100 miles. But, I've driven in Mexico my whole life. You can take a $40 rt bus to Cabo if you'd like. I've posted two or three videos on La Paz. Maybe they will help.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  3 роки тому

      Also, just wait until La Paz to exchange money. The airport is a terrible exchange rate. Maybe get a $100 and the rest in town.

    Mexican Car Insurance is very important. I'm an affiliate for a great company in San Diego. Check out my link to Baja bound below. You can find a great policy using my link, at no extra cost to you. Below is a link to my video on how important it is to drive in Mexico with the proper insurance policy.

      I've did a few videos on entering Mexico. It will cover everything you know. You can enter without a passport, but you might get a lecture when you try an return to the US. Make sure to bring a US license, etc.. or you will probably be detained until you can prove citizenship.
