I'm just sitting here amazed by your technique. and the entire piece sounds amazing. I've listened to over a dozen recordings of this piece. This entire recording is a magnificent masterpiece. thank you for your excellence
Such a fantastic piece! I've been practicing this for quite some time, basing my interpretation off of this video. Nobody else, so far, has it down quite like you.
So I was cleaning house & found an old score of "Two Mexican Dances" from grad school back in the 80's (I used for an electronic music class for some reason...I don't play the marimba) & thought I'd give it a listen on YT...then your performance of this piece came up automatically and I have to say it's about the neatest thing I've heard in a while, and your performance was incredible! Though I play the 'King of Instruments' - the trumpet - I was marveling at the flow of notes/sticking/walking the range of the marimba...and controlling 2 sticks per hand flawlessly for 8 minutes?!
Just Amazing! If you had a concert for this.would watch. Just watching you in this video is amazing, but video is not worthy a media for for you. Concierto and Live events are worthy of your talent!
Amazing! I just started looking at this piece a few days ago. You definitely inspired me keep working at it! It's no doubt a challenge but I love how everything fits so well on the instrument. Most sections at least. Definitely a right of passage work for marimba. Loved your performance!
This piece is fantastic. I'd love to learn it, especially for college auditions, although at this point it may be a little to late to start on this piece. You do an amazing job with this though, and I'm jealous!
Hey Man, I'm here after two years! Finally I will bring this piece for my Degree in July, haha. The piece is very difficult, and your performance is still my favourite on UA-cam! Ciao! Gabriele
Carl Tafoya Sorry I missed you! I didn't end up doing any hot pepper sight reading at PASIC, though let it be known that I have eaten a habanero pepper and played marimba on camera, which hopefully will be released soon...!
Doug Perry It's all good in the hood! I'm not too prominent in the world of percussion, being only a Sophomore in high school! And yay!! Not that I'm in favor of you eating habanero peppers, but I like the stuff you put out!
+Firehawk9000 In case you still haven't found your answer a year later, the notes are Ab, Eb, C, G, Eb, Bb, G, D, Bb, F, D, A, F, C, A, E for the run up, and starting from E it's then B, F#, G, D, A, B, F#, C#, D, A, E, F# for the run back down. Basically it's a series of thirds upwards and 4 groups of fourths downwards.
Slow and steady wins the race! I spent a lot of time practicing slowly and carefully with a metronome. Pace yourself--assign yourself a specific number of measures a day to learn, perhaps one or two phrases at a time (depending on how difficult the section is). I used 3 Vic Firth M115s, and a M113 in the bass position.
@@DrumUltimA Yeah I imagine learning this kind of piece becomes something of a grind. Were there times when you'd just be like "Nah. I'm taking today off." just to keep yourself motivated the rest of the time?
1:39 and 2:35 can be sticked (is that a word?) the way they appear in the score. 2:01 is a little tricky--the angles are awkward. I think I stuck to the score, but you have to move your body around to help prevent mallet collisions!
Amazing performance! I am about to start learning this piece myself. Just curious, what mallets did you use? The music suggest the LHS15H multi toned mallets. Did you use those or another multi toned mallet?
Thanks so much! Yes there is--it's published by Schott and you can find it in many percussion/sheet music stores! Here it is on Steve Weiss: www.steveweissmusic.com/product/velocities-joseph-schwantner/marimba-solo
Let's see... I probably started it in September of that year, and probably performed it first in April? I don't remember exactly, but I think 7 months is probably a good guess!
I studied it very intensely! I practiced it for at least an hour every day. This was a part of my course of study--I had to get it ready for my recital, as well as a competition!
Benjamin Hellert Yes, it's published by Schott. You can purchase it here, among other places! www.steveweissmusic.com/product/velocities-joseph-schwantner/marimba-solo
0:39 hitting me with some gamecube-startup feelings hahahaha

This is easily one of the most difficult pieces for solo marimba. The way you made it sound incredibly smooth is amazing. Wow. Bravo!!!
2:14- 4:00 is an awesome transition. Good technique. Good musical transitions. Awesome solo.

Holy cow, Doug! I was absolutely mesmerized the entire way through! Bravo!

Bought the sheets yesterday!
Oh thank god that someone on UA-cam does this piece with stevens... Every other version on UA-cam is played by Burton Bods!
Music City Mystique used this song in their 2008 show! I knew it sounded familiar
Excellent performance, bravo!!
I'd like to study velocities, please, do you have any suggestions for starting this hard composition?
Thank you

Such a great performance! Although, I feel this piece could fit perfectly as a final stage/boss battle soundtrack in any game.
What’s although
Literally practicing with this at 50% speed and only 45 seconds in, easily the hardest thing I’ve ever attempted
Check the song: Loops IV... come back and you'll see that this is nothing compared to that 😬
まっこと心地よい音楽(^^♪
HELLA!
!!!
muito bom!!!
Spoiler alert, Doug Perry is cooler in person. I met him at PASIC 2014! Awesome guy!
Did you meet him in a game of hot pepper sight-reading? I heard he might do that at PASIC this year, but I didn't get to meet him when I was there :(
Carl Tafoya Sorry I missed you! I didn't end up doing any hot pepper sight reading at PASIC, though let it be known that I have eaten a habanero pepper and played marimba on camera, which hopefully will be released soon...!

***** Nice! Good luck!
How do you even begin to memorize this lol
Great run through
ke bueno!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent. Wish I was as good
Wow.
不過我也超欣賞演奏者他想表達音樂曲目!還真的有特色!
Well done! Can you please provide a link or two on how such a piece is notated?
I know this is a hard question but could anybody tell me what the notes are for the run up at 3:30 through 3:34?
+Firehawk9000 In case you still haven't found your answer a year later, the notes are Ab, Eb, C, G, Eb, Bb, G, D, Bb, F, D, A, F, C, A, E for the run up, and starting from E it's then B, F#, G, D, A, B, F#, C#, D, A, E, F# for the run back down. @@DrumUltimA Amazing job at this piece. How long did it take you to learn it?
@@fabiancorrea5822 A couple months!
@@DrumUltimA Yeah I imagine learning this kind of piece becomes something of a grind. Were there times when you'd just be like "Nah. I'm taking today off." just to keep yourself motivated the rest of the time?
very nice performance and sound. Tempo also nice.
Question: which mallets are you using ?
+Mark Lutz Thanks! I'm using a Vic Firth M113 in the bass position and three Vic Firth M115s on top of that.
By far the best recording on UA-cam - what variety of Van Sice mallets are you using? 3 115's and a 114?
Thanks man! Give me a call some time, I miss ya and would love to hear from you!

You carry out all the music you play fantastically! Very impressive! I was wondering, is there sheet music for this piece available for purchase?

Uau!!!!
Hi Doug! Amazing performance!!! I was wondering, which mallets did you use?
he seems to be using Van Sice mallets 113 in the top three and the 115 in the bottom
Hey all, I'm learning this piece right now and I'm at a utter loss as to how to stick 1:39, 2:01, and 2:35 How does one stick them?
hi!could you please tell me which microphones you used for this recording? :)
I used a pair of RØDE NT5s for this one!
great job man thanks for the info!
Its really a great sound, playing and recording. What kind of microphones do you use?
Thanks! I used Rode NT-5s for this. I gotta give most of the credit to the hall, though--I didn't have to do a thing to the audio!
Doug Perry
Thanks for the quick reponse anyway!
Nice! Do you play any other percussive instruments besides marimbas/xylos, etc?
I do! I play all of the standard orchestral percussion collection--so, snare drum, timpani, accessories, etc. I also play drum set and steel pans!
Doug Perry
Cool! Do you have any covers of you playing those instruments?
Ryan Brown if you check out my rather be cover or my another medium cover, I play a lot of them!
Doug Perry
Okay, thanks!
Doggy!! Great job!
Hey Doug, how long did it take to learn this piece the first time (starting from nothing)?
Let's see... I probably started it in September of that year, and probably performed it first in April? I don't remember exactly, but I think 7 months is probably a good guess!
Did you study it intensively or was it a "side project"?
I studied it very intensely! I practiced it for at least an hour every day. This was a part of my course of study--I had to get it ready for my recital, as well as a competition!
Thanks :)
How long did you rehearse this before recording it?
+David Lee Many months! I started learning the piece probably in December of 2011 or so. Took me a long time!
Blue Knights?
Eight and a half minutes of straight up notes
What mallets are those
I'm using three Vic Firth m115s on the top, and a 113 on the bottom :)
Is there sheet music?
Benjamin Hellert Yes, it's published by Schott. You can purchase it here, among other places! www.steveweissmusic.com/product/velocities-joseph-schwantner/marimba-solo
He looks like skinnier JonTron
you look like Demitri Martin.
few notes :P
sounds like something from pokemon
Hahah, this is DEFINITELY not video game music, but I'm glad you think so! I might put it on a video game music recital some day...
Doug Perry that'll be cool!
This is fucking Dirty
