La Campanella - Solo marimba version!

  • Danish marimbist Anders Elten presents his new solo marimba arrangement of F. Liszt's concert etude for piano "La Campanella" - the third etude in the "Grandes Études de Paganini" series (S. 141).
    The thematic material of the etude derives from N. Paganini's 2nd violin concerto - Liszt ingeniously combines the simple material with numerous virtuoso piano techniques designed to dazzle the audience. The piece ebbs and flows with contrasting A/B sections - playful, yet somehow restrained, "A" sections give way to joyful "B" sections that charge ever forward, gradually building momentum.
    The technical challenges of the etude are amplified manifold on the marimba, but I tried to stay as faithful as possible to the "layout" of the original etude, preserving as many voices and techniques as possible. I had to transpose the entire etude in order to better preserve high/low contrast. The result is devilishly difficult, showcasing a wide variety of usual and unusual marimba techniques such as double octave skips, superfast triples, three/four note one-hand arpeggios, one-handed three-voice polyphony, octave + fifth intervals and "extreme wingspan" passages. I'll probably eventually tweak the arrangement slightly and then re-record it - however for now, please enjoy my first attempt at bringing "La Campanella" to life on solo marimba!
    If you want to give this arrangement a go, it is now published by Edition Svitzer! Please find it through the following link: www.editionsvi...

    Dude, this is pure insanity! I cannot believe my eyes and ears. Probably the best I've seen anyone play the marimba, including my amateur self. The technique, range within and between hands, dynamics, you're too much man! Haha keep it up!!

    That ... was ... UN .. BELIEVABLE! Bravo x 1000 ! Amazing. Not sure if most folks know that the keys on a marimba are graduated in width so playing octaves etc. requires constant adjustment of the 2 mallets. Not to mention the suberb recording of that excellent sounding marimba .. wow. Mallet selection perfect. Fantastic one-handed rolls/trills with .. modified Burton/Musser grip in right hand and Stevens in left? So great. Thank you so much for sharing.

    I love how you stepped back on that last note but kept your right foot in place- it's like you are playing a vibraphone and you want the last chord to resonate. Andres, that chord resonated with me and I'm sure it did with everyone watching this. Truly masterful playing!

    Hi! Just finished listening and i have to say, other than the transcription being really, really astonishing, what really swept me off the chair was your technique, being still a student i find this extremely eye-widening to what the so called "skill ceiling" of our instrument is, and wanted to say that even given the extreme difficulty of the piece, your voicing is sublime.

    Wonderful acoustic giving the same effect of piano pedal. The arrangement is very clever, transposed to f minor, keeping the essential of the music while playing at most 4 notes at the same time on an instrument with less notes. I also really like the added ornaments not written in the original, Liszt would like it for sure! The use of the wooden part of the stick gives a clearer sound, I wasn’t expecting this possibility. And the interpretation is also incredible, you are a true musician, not only someone who has good technique!

    • @jpencille
      @jpencille Рік тому +1

      Yea, I remember in I think his Paganini 24 video comments section he explains why. I think it was something about traditional feeling better doing the super closed intervals for him whereas Stevens is better for the constant leaping and interval changing you'll see in the left hand? If you want even more of something to think about, watch his Right hand at 3:58, he switches between Traditional and Burton - which I'd imagine is for the locking octaves you see later on.

    • @anderseltenmarimba
      @anderseltenmarimba  Рік тому +1

      Hah, good catch! Yes, that’s pretty much correct - traditional for the fast “one-handed” stuff, Burton for locking in the final octaves and Stevens for the large intervals in LH. There’s certainly more to it than that, but that’s the essence. However, any grip/combination of grips could probably work here :)
