I like your honest review. I really like mine, it is a quality model for $600. I think the reason there are flaws with screw holes and seams is because they were working with a limited budget. TOMY makes model cars so this is outside of their comfort zone. I hope they take what they learned and continue to make high end Star Trek collectibles. There is a guy on youtube who had a great idea to cut a rod and use that to prop up the front of the ship instead of the secondary stand. I tried that and it seems to work. Looks a lot better anyways.
i make models too. right now i am building a very straightforward Occre tram kit. Its taking forever and reminding me how much i suck at painting. I plan to sell it to pay for a more elaborate tram kit, and if i can even get $5/hr out of my time building it i will be surprised. $600 for an already built, fully lit and airbrushed model? I am good with it, even with its flaws.
Of the many unboxings I have watched, at least three people have broken that sensor, due to mishandling. I've seen one person open it, upside-down. He ended up stepping on the shuttle bay door and cracking it.
I owned a Master Replicas USS Enterprise (sold it several years ago at twice my original purchase price). While it was made completely of plastic. It was held up on the stand by a single "pole", which also fed power to run the lighting, and never had any potential tipping issues. The stand base was very heavy which also prevented tipping. The MR Enterprise also didn't have any of the IMO egregious seam issues. The rotating nacelles were far brighter and more TV accurate than those on the TOMY. Granted, original price on the Master Works was roughly $1,000 to $1,500 or so. So, it was offered at approximately twice the price that the TOMY is offered at. IMO that price was well worth it.
Not many people have mentioned the Bussard collector colour. You are right. The Tomy Bussards are nothing like the ones on the TV model which almost like a translucent peach colour. However, the Tomy model is trying to imitate the renovated Bussards on the Smithsonian Enterprise. If you compare the two Tomy does do a pretty good job.
i agree. And plastics don't necessarily bother me that much despite my somewhat over the top statement. i started with Lionel postwar trains which were largely plastic, but have transitioned to prewar toys which contain no plastic and now i have a non-plastic collection, so introducing a large plastic item into it doesnt sit well with me right now.
Now that these Tomy Enterprise ships are selling for $1700 - $3000 online, around 3 to 4 times the original price, I’m guessing everyone that nitpicks this product is very very happy they have it.
I'm in the mindset that this is a giant toy, but with loving care appointed to a lot of details, most notably the paint job (although on mine one of the weathering stripes on the saucer is askew to the rest.) Mine also has some production flaws like the seam on the top of the secondary hull is spread out a bit near the end so there's light bleed from the hanger bay. All in all, not deal breakers for me since it only cost $600! A frikkin' steal in my book! The only real issue that we can argue over though about the Tomy model are mods for the stand. And yes, MrTrek's solution for the turbolift bump works better logically than skewing the whole bridge so that it's at an angle to the path of flight. I have my Enterprise sitting on my table in my dining room which I use as a prep area for shipping packages. I have it facing me with the starboard side. From 4 feet I don't notice the screwhole covers. Still gorgeous!
Haha I enjoyed your comments, cracked me up. You make excellent points and I appreciate your outlook on why you're keeping it. I really like the model but as you say, this isn't made to be a screen used filming model for a movie. It's a cool MODEL.👍🖖
What a GREAT video!! THANKS! I first saw this model only a few weeks ago. I said WOW!!! Then I stumbled on your video. I'm not a major geek, but I am a bit critical on some things. I no longer want this. Maybe for a a hundred bucks or so but not what they go for. I'd be pretty dissapointed. I saw in person back in the day the original 11 foot filiming model of the Enterprise before they first hung it up at the Smithsonian so long ago. How? Long story but here is the very short version. The building was not yet open to the public but because of a really nice security guard he let my friend and I in. Seeing the Enterprise literally face to face was like meeting Elvis or the Queen. Anyway, Thanks again for the video!! Live Long and Prosper..
Awesome! Glad you got to see it before it was over-restored, but to be fair it was in pretty poor shape with sloppy repainting when you saw it. Glad I was able to save you some money. I accidentally said 8 foot shooting model yet no one has called me out for it.
thats about the only thing i havent really noticed, even though i know its there. you should take it out and see how you feel about it, they seem to be strong on the secondary market and should strike while the fire is hot if you don't want it.
Thanks for this video! I was considering, but now think I'll take a pass. I've already built the 1:350 Polar Lights model (with the light kit), and was hoping for something that would be even better. After seeing your video, I can be sure that this ain't it! Maybe I'll save up for one of those $4000 jobs... Minor correction; the 11' filming model was originally completed on both sides. It was later, when they decided to retro-fit it for lights that they lost the details on the left/port (whatever) side to run the wires. They did, however, keep reverse decals to be applied so they could flip the film, should they even need to show that side of the ship... What I don[t get is, if they HAD to have those ugly screws, why wouldn't TOMY put them on the side already obscured by the stand? They leave you with a 'beauty' side you can't see, and an ugly side you can. That makes no sense whatsoever! Especially at the prices being asked for! I'll take a pass, with gratitude!
thanks, i also got the size of the filming model wrong and learned about the "completed both sides originally till the light kit was installed " detail only a few weeks ago, which i should have known but didnt. this whole model appears to be a series of unfortunate events that were piling up on them. i still like it but if you have a Polar Lights model with light kit, you have the superior model.
Thanks for sharing this. This model would be a little too big for my home. How do you recommend finding someone to build a model professionally? I’m afraid I don’t have the skill set to build one as good as I have seen. Thanks for your advice.
I ran across professional model builders on UA-cam. With enough searching you should come up with a name or two. Something like building polar lights enterprise" should come up with a number of vids and if the builder isn't a professional himself they may be able to point you to one better than I can
If you can swap that stand for a simple, solid plexiglass one, that would solve 80% of the problems. I'm also not a fan of that prominent side seam that runs all the way around the saucer.
For a guy who admittedly doesn’t really collect models, and mainly collects toys, he sure loves to point out all the flaws in this model.😂 Thanks for the honest review.
An amazing model for the price point, anyone expecting it to be studio model quality for $650 had bad expectations. You also dont have any burnt out lights, not every window is lit on the secondary hull. Your 4 funneled liner was a cool model to see, looks like it’s meant to be the Mauretania. Her cowl vents were very distinct, and that models has the same set up as she did.
thanks, its pretty much the Mauritania except there is a bit more gap between the two sets of funnels than between the first and last set which is a German 4 stacker thing. see here somewhere around page 190: www.blurb.com/books/10444021-toying-with-reality
@@alexprocyk8805yep, you’re right. It also has a well deck and three masts, something Mauretania doesn’t have. Guess I forgot a few details by the end of the video!
I would like to buy one for 650.00, I contacted tomy but no reply, I found out about it about a week ago. I imagine that the screw hole covers could be concealed with some filler and the right paint and for the price is not a bad deal. great video.
I saw other videos showing the saucer attached without needing that lift kit. They say it holds fine without the lift when it's attached to the body. YMMV
Don't think that that's the elevator/Turbo lift in back of the bridge! You are correct internally it's on the left side, but externally it's completely accurate relatively to the external model on the show! you can see it clearly on the Cage episode and other episodes with a top down view
I'm excited to get mine..looks like tomorrow finally. I paid 1250 on ebay a few months back which sucks, but it's the only model I've been interested in buying due to it being diecast/metal... and I think it will likely always be worth at least that and maybe considerably more once the surplus of them now get sold. Also I'm with you on destructive cats.. I'm gonna risk not having the saucer section stand but I definitely will be a bit worried the first few days when I'll know theyll be checking it out.
Good, you will love the finish on it. I really thought long and hard about getting 2 as i figured they would probably sell for about that much on the secondary market, but then chickened out because my attempts at being clever with making money have always failed.
You need to put an outside motion light sensor near the ship hooked up to a loud car horn. If the cat comes near it BEEEEEEEP. It won't ever go near it again.. LOL
@@SSRN_SEAVIEW I do have cat sprayers that have motion detectors in them but I found that usually just scares them into running straight through the thing they are trying to protect
That's wild, I called Tomy's outlet store yesterday 1/26/24 and bought it for $599, $30.11 shipping, no tax, for $629.10 out the door. It'll be shipped Monday.
Wow.. that's pretty cool. You could buy 2 and sell 1 to pay for the other on Ebay. People must just assume they have none left. If I hadn't already bought one at the time I definitely would have tried the outlet store before I paid up the nose on Ebay. It's a great model regardless what you pay if you can afford it. Obviously something to someone making $20 an hour vs $50 an hour or $100 an hour have different ideas on what it's worth to them..@@robertkees6048
I was sooooo looking forward to this model. I ordered 2 of them. When the email came from TOMY and I saw the seams and screw hole covers, I cancelled immediately. I’ll stick with my Master Replicas 1/350. It’s missing the weathering, and the bridge, but looks way better with sealed seams and no screw covers. I wanted the TOMY to get the screen / 11” filming model paint job that Gary Kerr signed off on. I would never have been happy with the flaws on this. I wish Master Replicas would reissue there’s with the detailing Gary provided TOMY. That would be a model I would buy.
your review of the Enterprise is the best and it is honest/ the stand should be heavier and balanced so that it can support the weight right...and why the shutttebay doors are open..
I am given to understand that you don’t need to use the saucer support stand. The two posts and screw at the neck are more than enough to hold the saucer in place without damage. Using it does make the model less wobbly and more stable which is why the Tomy risk aversion dept recommend using it.
On its own, in a cat-free environment, I am sure it would stand, just as sure as I am that within minutes of removing the saucer stand they will stand up and push it down saucer first.
Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't opened it. I just can't decide if I want it or I want to sell it. I really wish I had bought the pre-assembled/painted Polar Lights 1/350 Enterprise. I've been kicking myself ever since.
That would be something someone with talent could do. I expect over years the rubber plugging up the holes will shrink and crack and that will have to be done someday.
they were just released and they are already telling me I cant buy one. they clearly didnt advertise well as I only just heard about them, didnt even get a chance to buy one.
It was kind of a crowdfunder (like what HasLabs does) that was lightly promoted last year and took more than a year to produce and ship out. I only knew about it because I went to Fan Expo Chicago last year and walk by the little booth Tomy had. The guys who proposed this are big Star Trek fans and wanted to do this as a passion project. Unfortunately due to lack of publicity or marketing, it got less than the 5000 orders they had as a floor, but still went ahead with producing it. For that I thank them. They only produced as many as were ordered in the campaign with maybe a small margin extra. Any ones that are being sold by Tomy themselves are most likely from cancelled orders. And they will make no more (to someone's delight), they said they destroyed the molds after the production run.
@@inkermoy They had to destroy the molds and promise never to make it again because they built it with other peoples money. You can't take that cash and then say a couple years later, we'll just break out the old molds and get the production line moving again. That wouldn't be fair to those that shelled out the cash in the first place.
@@robertkees6048 Since I preordered and got mine for $500-600, it's really not skin off my nose. Now, those that paid after release, 3x the original price? I could see those people being annoyed or angry. But if there was a big enough demand after the fact, causing Tomy to do another run, I would consider it good for only one reason: It would give Tomy the incentive to do more Star Trek ships, a D7, Refit, Reliant, etc. Alas, it was not the case. I guess there aren't enough TOS fans anymore.
The Tomy Enterprise is crazy, I called Tomy this past Jan after they'd already shipped and bought three for the original $599 each. I recently sold one on ebay for $2250 and a second one this week for $2375, and that was 10 months after they initially shipped. I made so much the third one I kept was free, and the profits even paid the $700 for the refit I ordered. Pure luck.
grrrrr. i had originally planned to buy 2 to sell one to offset the cost of the other, but cheapened out and only bought one. then when the initial reports came out with all its problems, i thought i did the right thing. But, as per my usual status quo, I didnt.
@@alexprocyk8805 Well I only lucked out, I missed the fund raising period in the summer of 22, I only found out after they'd already shipped in Oct of 23, even called Tomy to see if they had any or a waiting list in Nov of 23 and it was no to both questions. Then for no reason at all on a whim I called on Jan 29th 24 just to ask and they lady said they had some that were "unspoken for" is how she put it, I was like what was that you said now; flipping out of my mind. I pulled a muscle reaching for my wallet cause they were already selling for $1500 on Ebay by then, I figured it was a sure thing. I asked her did I just luck out or something, there's not supposed to be any for sale. She said yeah you did, things happen from time to time and most times people never call to just ask, you called and asked on the exact right day. This type of thing never happens to me, so I'm grateful beyond words, it was like winning the Star Trek lottery or something.
I just watched this during my lunch and this video is very satisfying. After watching and seeing everything i would say its priced fairly. I didn't know anything about this model and happy to see its not plastic. Excellent review my friend!
Thanks for this review. I AM a scale model builder, and have built the Polar Lights 1/350 TOS Enterprise....and this Tomy version is just crap. Especially for what you pay for it. I would have not bought one anyway, and this just vindicates me.
I'm sorry I missed out on the original release of this model but is Tommy still selling these models or if not where can you find them for a reasonable price anyone that knows please respond thanks.
Thank you very much for this video. I was thinking about buying it because it's not possible to see all these defects on the website. Like! Hugs and Success! (translated by Google Translate)
Personally I think it's rather super expensive for my budget but if I was given an opportunity in a way of affording it I would much rather have the refit Enterprise I fell in love with Star Trek the motion picture Enterprise when I first saw it I thought it was the most beautifulest starship I'd ever seen in my life I loved how it lit up like a Christmas tree on Christmas morning when they left dry dock I would love to see this in real life light up that way I thought it was so beautiful
you should check out a youtube video on the making of that scene: ua-cam.com/video/HHjLsvEOeS0/v-deo.html the guy who painted it was a master...it has this really fine reflective pinkish hue, hard to believe but true, he airbrushed that on and it gives it a super futuristic finish. i never really noticed it before, its just an effect that works on you subconsciously.
I don’t mine the screw covers or the saucer separation as much as the poor overall quality of the Tony Enterprise. From paint bubbles to smudges on the model, Tomy could have done a much better job with quality control! It’s not worth the money.
Lol imo , the model looks great ! If I built a plastic model with all the lights and paint, I would have way more than that into it. You guys are a bunch of Karen’s ! Lol. 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻
This 100%, people bitching about the screw hole covers, turn the model around. They aren’t on both sides. This thing is a steal at the price point, anyone expecting a model the same quality of the old Master Replicas model at half the price had incredibly unrealistic expectations.
"As God intended"? Would that be "The Great Bird of the Galaxy"? Seriously, I agree with you about over-zealous ST fans who require everything must be perfectly "logical" and sync up in this make believe world. I find them to be ridiculous in their zealotry and sad. I'd be annoyed, too, however, if I'd spent $650 on this flawed model. It's why I recently decided to withdraw from being part of the crowd funding campaign for Tomy's model of the refit Enterprise from TMP. The total cost on that will be $750. No thanks. Maybe I'll put it towards the next Star Trek cruise which has got to be the ultimate ripoff!😂
As a SciFi modeler who has built the 1/350 scale model with full lighting, I agree with others, I think that thing is a piece of crap full of ungainly seems and overly painted weathering.

screw holes are horrible...and I told them about that before they got started.. as far as I am concerned, people should be asking for a refund..

I agree...but I kept mine as an investment as I'm fine with my MR... for the price point, I think this is a good deal...
your review of the Enterprise is the best and it is honest/ the stand should be heavier and balanced so that it can support the weight right...and why the shutttebay doors are open..
Lol, I’m think you make a very strong case. Like others here, I do enjoy your honesty👍
Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't opened it. I just can't decide if I want it or I want to sell it. I really wish I had bought the pre-assembled/painted Polar Lights 1/350 Enterprise. I've been kicking myself ever since.
Maybe take the screw covers off, go match the paint, then fill the gaps with something and paint over them? But the other seems that's tough.
Push the Yellow Power Button on top of the Saucer twice and the Impulse Engines in the back of the Saucer light up.
Those screw covers are a deal breaker for me. Aside from that - very lovely.
I have 2. I aslo have a Klingon D7 Battle Crusier.
Thanks for this review. I AM a scale model builder, and have built the Polar Lights 1/350 TOS Enterprise....and this Tomy version is just crap. Especially for what you pay for it. I would have not bought one anyway, and this just vindicates me.
Can you still get one today Feb. 211, 2024?
there was a youtube vid about the availability of returns to tomy, but then they got sold out again. maybe check back with tomy.
Now I have to move the turbolift to be off center
I'm sorry I missed out on the original release of this model but is Tommy still selling these models or if not where can you find them for a reasonable price anyone that knows please respond thanks.
Thank you very much for this video.
I was thinking about buying it because it's not possible to see all these defects on the website.
Like!
Hugs and Success!

"It's a freakin' TV show!"
...
Too bad, those details would drive me crazy.
Good review, thanks Alex
...Oh and I Like'd and Subscribed (I like trains and toys too).
Thanks.
If I could have bought it at 600 US oh yeah. Now……forget it.
I don’t mine the screw covers or the saucer separation as much as the poor overall quality of the Tony Enterprise. From paint bubbles to smudges on the model, Tomy could have done a much better job with quality control! It’s not worth the money.
Thanks for informing people who want better quality for the money!
Willl not buy it now...
I’ll give 900.00 for one boxed and sealed.
I built a polar lights 1:350 scale and it’s way better than that
Lol imo , the model looks great !
@@AltereanReviews The Tomy model has one thing clearly over the MR model: whisper quiet motors for the Bussard collectors!!
As a SciFi modeler who has built the 1/350 scale model with full lighting, I agree with others, I think that thing is a piece of crap full of ungainly seems and overly painted weathering.
i wouldnt even try to talk you out of that opinion, largely because its right. which doesnt mean i still dont like it.
This model was painted to replicate the filming model, currently at the Smithsonian. Gary Kerr was one of the consultants. I think TOMY got it right.
Not for $650. This model is incredibly detailed, and very well done for the price point.
@@AltereanReviewsit was actually $599 in the crowd funding phase.
@@wteg4356 an even better price then.
Looking good🖖🦘
Funny all the complaints you hear, but everyone's keeping theirs. This thing looks really awesome, especially in lower lighting.
Poor engineering for such a costly model.........Take the money and run mentality............
No, it's junk
A TOS Enterprise that’s a POS!
How dare you, you're in timeout young man. Spock will be in later to give you the Vulcan neck pinch and you'll be out till brunch tomorrow.
Ugh!
I don't know? Are you a giant man-baby with a bunch of expendable cash and time on your hands? Maybe so.
i prefer man-child, but otherwise, yes. yes I am.
@@alexprocyk8805an epic reply to an asinine comment. Nicely done.
Love the answer to the stupid comment, and I wish I had the expendable cash. The man child definitely suits a lot of people including me. @@alexprocyk8805
Are you a poor broke hater with no expendable cash but lots of time on your hands?
Well this review help me make my decision, thank you I will NOT be getting one, I know how to build models and will be building my own.
i am knee deep on some Pocher car models, and it has reinforced my decision - i will take all these flaws over all the heartache of trying to get a model correct...like dropping glue on a leather seat at the last step. for example.
Sorry , not worth the money.
