  • This video walks the viewer through nine reasons a coin will receive the 98 code designation. Among these problems are graffiti, planchet streaks, tooled surfaces, whizzing, machine damage, rim damage, surface damage, mount removal, and holed or holed and plugged coins.

    Thanks for the tutorial! Very educational and informative. PCGS are the experts so I would expect them to have seen everything at one time or another!

    Curious question, when you say attempts to remove spots PCGS and NGC call it conservation, yet if i were to do it, it's called damage, whats the difference apart from your fee? I know some people can be harsh with this, so i'm talking about subtleties and not hard abrasions, such as dipping silver etc......
    What process do you use that would be considered conservation compared to mine?

      I could be wrong here, and I’m quite late, but sometimes they will use pure acetone.

    7:11 would I be the only one that will be able to grade that coin?

    If the coin is not gradable, then will the coin still be in a holder with say it is authentic, but damaged? For example, that 1916D dime, should be slabbed to say "authentic" but damaged with no numerical grade since this coin is often faked. Or PCGS would not even slab it?

      Hello, if you visit this site www.pcgs.com/grades and navigate to the "No Grades" section, you can see coins we will and will not slab. Generally, if a coin is damaged but authentic we will holder and describe it as such.

    I have a 2 piece that has the holes in it. My question is can it be graded or restored?

  • @josephmartinage9622

    Typically nowadays I would not even consider buying a damaged or cleaned coin except for a place holder, but what would you say is the decrease in price points for damaged coins. There must still be a market for them. It's not like you can just put them back into circulation. And it's clear that they have some value above bullion prices. I have always gone with the notion that if it has light damage or cleaning 1 grade below is about the price to pay... moderate damage 2 grades lower ... excessive damage maybe 3 grades. Maybe that's not enough.

    • @misterTVman
      @misterTVman 2 роки тому +1

      Yes, many people still collect these imperfected coins. Some collectors simply don't care enough about the damage or cleaning, they just want an affordable example.

    • @josephmartinage9622
      @josephmartinage9622 2 роки тому +1

      @@misterTVman this all seems to be subjective though. I bought an 1821 Quarter that was holed and plugged when I was 15 for $26. It was the oldest coin I had owned to that point. 15 years later I was down on my luck and tried to sell it. I got offered 2 dollars, and I accepted.

    • @misterTVman
      @misterTVman 2 роки тому +1

      @@josephmartinage9622 I see, I don't buy holed or plugged coins ever. I only buy slightly cleaned or "damaged" coins with fine or higher details. These kind of coins still attract collectors while heavily cleaned or damaged coins do not.

    Great video, but you shouldn't have put "machine damage" because it can be easily confused with "machine doubling", as machine doubling could be called machine damage also.

    There was a holed and plugged coin at the 2017 FUN show that was listed as the most valuable coin of all-time at over 10 MILLION dollars. So I guess sometimes it's acceptable ???

    • @MarudharArtsgallery
      @MarudharArtsgallery 7 років тому +1

      Of course . Not gradable doesn't mean that it's not genuine or historical.

      Best Racing Tips Win At The Dragstrip what coin was that? 1794 dollar in sp66?that was mint done before striking, thus original to the coin, not by someone afterwards..

    • @9sec93lx
      @9sec93lx 4 роки тому +1

      @@jackdaniels2586 Yeah, I think that was the one . I think I read somewhere after I posted this comment that they used to do that if a coin was underweight or something like that.

    I have a very nice 1831 capped bust quarter with small letters and no berries. It has a dark tone with a rim ding at 6;00. It’s not bad looking but still there. On something that early and I would guess a high AU. to low MS. Overall a clean coin but I was wondering if it would still get a grade with damage..

    • @milesaway000
      @milesaway000 3 роки тому +2

      Master Of Cents. Similar question, mine is ~pg 66 but has a rim dent,ding, just one, I guess could be to test if it was real.

      Maximize Freedom I believe the damage that was done on mine was by somebody using something very hard to pry it out of a book.

    • @milesaway000
      @milesaway000 3 роки тому +2

      Master Of Cents. It can mean the difference between a 2000 dollar coin and a 400 dollar coin which is amazing and scary. I plan on going to a local shop and having them guess before I was to send the coin in to get it rated, which is also scary.

    Your Vision is Excellent, but is it Supernatural? Do you or have you ever noticed the number of points on the stars on coins? American Coins should have five point stars. That is, on only some of the coin. I've noticed that a six point star made its way on to Our Coins long ago. The six point star is of evil, so what's it doing on Our American Coins? I'll tell you what's it doing there. Its part of The Big Lie. Those MOFO'S can Hear ME NOW. I'M GOING TO BRING YOU DOWN. Every American Coin has a Mask on it as symbolism. What are 'they' trying to hide from us? I KNOW WHO......GOD! That's WHO! And Same thing on Our Statue of Liberty. It's Time To Blow The Doors off This Popsicle Stand.
