    Holy shit. I've never seen plug in a crankshaft like that. Good info.

    Good work John! All old Russian crankshfts has plugs like these.

    Very good information. Do you further clean out the galleries by rinsing with solvent?

      It goes back in the 180 degree F. pressure washer and then blown out with high pressure air.

      +Bruce Boschek There are a variety (diameter and stiffness) of wire brushes that are used for cleaning crankshaft and engine block oil galleries. They resemble "pipe cleaners".

    Was there a oil filter in this engine?

    John,
    Do you have to re-ballance this crankshaft now? Looks like this knife-edged crank is for racing purpose, and these new plugs are heavier then the OEM ones.

      Yes, I will balance the whole assembly, I removed about 60-65 grams from the rods as well, plus lightened the flywheel.

    John can you make a video on how to do this on the mitsu 4g63 cranks with the balls for the plugs.

      I was looking for the exact same thing. I've got no clue how to remove those little buggars. Thanks for the hardened steel ball bearing Mitsubishi...

      ***** I have been looking at doing this mod as well. I am how ever leaning to buying a manley crank setup because of the amount of money i would need to invest into a used mitsu crank the needs specific machine work, when i could just buy a good aftermarket crankshaft that does not need nearly as much work and has a warranty.

      Dude, we've had several Chinese made Manley cranks fail, where the factory Mitsu crank holds up very well. Get the crank ion nitrided and then cryo treated, then you will have a stellar crankshft. We are seeing over 970+ WHP with a stock crank in one our clients engines, right now we are doing another build that will have 70-85 lbs of boost with a stock crankshaft.

      fiatnutz We will do business. I have a GVR-4 to restore, and my Colt project's direction is changing.

      Chase Niemyjski You can buy a brand new 6-bolt or 7-bolt 2.0 or 2.4L 4g crank from forklift suppliers. Hyundai owns Mitsubishi's old forging equipment and they still make them because 4g6x blocks power about a quarter of all the forklifts in the world. New 6-bolt 2.0L or stroker crank. That would give you a great core to start with.
      I've got access to a forklift graveyard and I'm considering doing a video. Most of them run on propane, but there are a few carburated models. I don't know if they're wide block or narrow block? ...but the cranks are the same. Just a FYI. Fortunately that helps keep the parts market alive.

    Would that eventually offset the balance of the Crankshaft, not cleaning the slug traps?

    • @fiatnutz
      @fiatnutz  11 років тому

      Probably not because the sludge is equally distributed. Plus when you weigh the sludge its just a very few grams.

    Do you Loctite (green?) those treaded plugs (set screws?)? I'm about to do this to 4AGE.... except they have nasty peened in balls Big fan here, BTW.

    • @Walaki
      @Walaki 11 років тому

      you cant get those balls out from a 4age crank IMHO

      Walaki I'll let you know.

    • @fiatnutz
      @fiatnutz  11 років тому

      Yes I do use loctite. The balls can be gotton out by welding a rod to the ball and then pulling it out with a slide hammer. Sometimes they need to be burned out with desintegrator.

      fiatnutz, Walaki I just got one 4AGE ball out with a 1/4" diamond hole saw on a Foredom tool with lots of cutting oil. It took about 40 minutes. Ended up cutting halfway through the ball.. (the ball is 7.15mm D). The hole is undamaged. LOTS of sludge!

    • @Walaki
      @Walaki 11 років тому

      And what did you find behind it? And how do you plan to put a ball back in?
