  • Klaus Schmierer, MB BS, PhD, FRCP, The Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London & The Royal London Hospital of Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK, and Dominic Shadbolt, BA, MSc, Founder of the MSGuide & patient advocate, discuss limitations in multiple sclerosis (MS) care, in particular the hurdles faced in the implementation of evidence-based innovation. They highlight the use of lumbar punctures, explaining how side effects like headaches can be reduced by using atraumatic, pencil-pointed needles, which are often overlooked due to their high upfront price. Mr Shadbolt also addresses the lack of follow-up care after procedures, resulting in missed opportunities for feedback and improvement. He critiques the healthcare system's short-term cost-saving measures and how these decisions often neglect the long-term costs of patient care, especially in managing chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis. This interview took place at the 18th Annual Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy 2024) in London, UK.
