  • This is the chilling tale of the Gunpowder Plot. In Westminster in 1605, a group of Catholic conspirators, led by charismatic Robert Catesby, hatched a daring plan to assassinate the King, Queen, and Parliament members by igniting 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the British Parliament. The dramatic events unfolded as Guy Fawkes, a Catholic soldier, was caught red-handed. We will delve into the historical intrigue, betrayal, and the subsequent arrest and trial of the conspirators.

    There is a video of the reconstruction of the events. On a remote Airforce base in England, parliament was reconstructed accurate to scale. The same amount of gunpowder was obtained, and placed under the rebuilt parliament. Cut outs of the lords and the king were placed in the building to see the rest of the explosion. The time was set. Warnings were issued to aircraft and surrounding area to the distant of 10 miles (15 km). They set the powder off and the building exploded. With that amount of powder, the building unzipped like a cheap suit. Every cutout was destroyed. Just as would have every person in the parliament in 1605. Remember, remember the 5th of November.

      The power of the black powder explosion would be determined by the casing and the structure of the building -- a basement of concrete would be far more deadly then an open wood enclosure. Also it was very difficult to store powder without moisture seeping in. Too much moisture would dampen the explosion. An effective bomb with low explosive gun powder would need 1. a strong shock wave, 2. a big fire, 3., poisonous gas. All a bit scarce in the gunpowder of the 1600's though, I note, these planners intended 3-4 barrels of powder; one wonders how they would have fused it. Getting the wicks to fire with synchronized blasts would have been a problem.

      To be fair, V for Vendetta is a dystopian science fiction story where one of the protagonists appropriates the imagery of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot in his attempt to disrupt a totalitarian regime.
      Neither the original author, Alan Moore, nor the filmmakers suggest in their respective stories that they are presenting an interpretation of history.

      Agreed. I was just saying that I know very little about this time period & was only familiar bc of that fictional reference. It’s a bit ironic of how deeply spiritual the original conflict was in relation to the theatrical hype of inclusion & tolerance as presented in the dystopian future interpretation.

      @johnkeller6063 Agreed. That's exactly what was meant by it. People are so hypersensitive that they can't even think through an analogy. 🙄 He said, "It was the powder keg equivalent to Hiroshima," not that it WAS the equivalent to Hiroshima. The point is to help us in modern times to understand how shocking and abhorrent it would've been to people in the 1600s to experience an explosion like that because no attack of that magnitude had ever been carried out before.

    Fantastic! As usual, to fanatics they are in the right and everyone else is wrong. If innocent people have to die, God works in mysterious ways. If God had wanted them to survive, then He would have saved them. A tale as old as humanity.

    • @auntiec6294
      @auntiec6294 7 місяців тому

      I disagree. That analogy was used merely to help us in 2023 to understand what the impact would've been to people in 1605 had the plot succeeded. We've grown up seeing massive explosions and carnage both in real life and in entertainment. No one at that time had ever seen anything like the devastation that explosion would've created. There was nothing inappropriate or sensationalist about the analogy. We just have to think it through a little bit instead of having a knee-jerk reaction.
