I just found out the actress Madlyn Rhue worked with Montalbán on _Bonanza (1960)_ playing his wife. They both appeared separately in Roddenberry's _The Lieutenant_ in 1963-4, so they didn't just get her off the street. In 1982 she was in an episode of _Fantasy Island._ Well they made her someone who was ignored (because she was a historian), so desperate. They cut McGivers's scene with another female crewmember, telling her she wants a "forceful" man.
Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor as Khan, he really is. But Richardo Montalban owns Khan, hands down. Ricardo is powerful, captivating & just plain scary. This is a guy you don't want to mess with, imprisoned or not. If you play both actors' performances side by side, Cumberbatch is good, but Ricardo is scary & dangerous.

@Bruce Wayne Indeed. You gave words to my own unspoken thoughts. I always had the feeling that I am watching some kind of space Sherlock from the future (in an evil twisted version).
Montalban’s Khan demonstrates in this scene exactly how cunning and dangerous he is, whereas Into Darkness needed Spock Prime to explain to the Enterprise crew how dangerous Khan was, rather than show it. Yes, it's a result of them having to compress the storyline into a single episode. The other option is to join the scene in progress and imply that a lot of the wooing already happened, but the audience would feel like they missed the best part, seeing her switch from random ensign to his love-tool. Hopefully they showed her reaction when she first saw him too.

That would make made it make more sense, but even so it's hard to believe she would betray her friends and co-workers for a kink.
While you raise a fair point, and this definitely isn't the norm, people do as a matter of fact make these mistakes daily. Many people who commit infidelity for example, the first time around are so overwhelmed by their passions that they often can't think straight. Regret comes after.
