Death Grips - "No Love" (Drum Cover)

- Recorded on one SM57 and a Nikon D7000 hung from the ceiling. Super ghetto fi - just being raw. Mic cuts out from :27-:40, so that's just the audio picked up from the camera..also, broke a stick at 4:50. Just like I did on literally every take I tried on this track.
Mic cutting out and sticks snapping. Totally Death Grips, nice
Next up is broken cymbals...that beautiful Bosphorus crash unfortunately now looks like it has leprosy :/ Probably shouldn't have used it for my bash-therapy sessions
....gonna upload a Guillotine vid when I pick the best take and you can see it in all its sad glory
This is literally the best "No Love"cover I've heard
Wow that's some high praise, thanks, man! Just trying to unleash my id / inner Zach Hill
the mic cutting out at 0:27 made this whole cover sound more DG like and gave it a quality that just fits the whole vibe of the song
Agreed, I was actually pretty pleased that it happened
Your drumming fits the rhythm of Stefan's vocals so well it's amazing
Thanks dood that was the goal, I kinda can't help but latch onto Stefan's rhythms
I know this gonna sound lame but: this video made me take drum classes. I had been considering it for a while now, especially since I discovered DG last year and the beats just hooked me in a very special way. I was mesmerized by it for months until I finally decided to Google “DG drums cover” and stumbled across your video. Next thing I know I’m now in my third lesson and my teacher is slowly trying to teach me the basics of drumming by deconstructing your video as a resource. I know it will take time and dedication, but I really wish to achieve to someday play this song as you do and also have this pure raw energy you got going here. Cheers from Brazil
Dude, I teach lessons for my day job and this is the highest compliment I could possibly receive. I know a lot of people get on a high horse about self-taught being the only way to go, but there's no one right way to do *anything*, much less learn an instrument. I'm glad you've got a good teacher showing you the ropes, dissecting something that inspires you is always my go-to move and I heavily recommend it (whether you're self-taught or not). So no, that doesn't make you sound lame in the slightest.
after 4 months can you play it?
opa irmão continua e fala pra gente quando vc conseguir tocar, abração

DRAIN GAAAAANG
Love this lofi recording - way more appropriate than if it was all clean and shiny on 10 mics :-)
...which is good since I don't even own ten mics hahaha
Gotta be honest, this is one of my favorite drum cover of all time.
🙏 thank you
@@karlfagerstrom still watching, lmao the emotions in your drumming is wild dude I fucking love it
you can really feel the rage seeping out of every hit with this one
I posted this on the death grips subreddit if that's okay with you
Of course dude! Thanks from one Karl to another!
@@karlfagerstrom :)
No love too strong for your sticks
jahstul #vater take notice and give me free sticks pleeeez
...More importantly that crash and pair of hats are now dedd
Hell yeah you bring that angry energy the song has and the calmer verse parts. Nice job, I hope to be able to play like this some day.
I bet you'll be able to before you know it (just treat your drums like therapy)
Literally one of the best covers ive heard
Thank you. Apologies in advance for this dad joke, but I feel like my Death Grips vids get relatively "No Love" (outside of this one). So thanks again for the kind words.
@@karlfagerstrom don’t worry about it man, all your cover so good, love the sewerslvt ones too, really big fan of sewerslvt and your covers
You have a great energy, the drums sound really aggressive as well,I'd say it's the perfect way to cover any death grips song
It's not really Death Grips if you don't break a couple sticks / bones / tendons
You earned every like you got. Killer cover.
Klunk klunk bonk
klunk, klunk bonk klunk, klunk bonk, tsh tsh
You should’ve done it bare handed the way Zach did in the music video lol
Just trying to let out my inner id (:
Karl Fagerstrom 8/10 could have jumped over the drums and break your legs.
MC RIDE WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION
He can come up and get me
Of course of course
He's in your area
How satisfying are those cymbals?
So satisfying I'm pretty much forced to smack em about 3x as hard and often as I should until they break on me
Man, I should've got an acoustic drumset than an electric one after watching this.
Either are great, but there's definitely nothing quite like beating the ever-loving shit out of acoustic drums. Although if you have an electronic kit, you can trigger samples or other cool stuff through MIDI in a DAW, so that's something else to think about 🤷
this is just amazing, I have to see this video at least 3 times each month
Thank you 🙏 that's exactly what I love to hear
Started off eh ok then dude went HAM
Probly because at "choose this life you're on your own" you can't help but imagine MC Ride throwing a drum into an imac and it's go time
INSANE
Thanks dude it was hella fun and cathartic
Karl Fagerstrom I enjoyed every second. Keep it up
this is the most violent cover ive ever heard in my life good god
Thank you, violence is what I aimed for
may i ask what setup you have
- Yamaha birch custom absolute shells in fusion sizes (12", 14", 22" - the 10" tom got stolen after a live show years ago).
- Some random snare that was just called "Japan snare" when I bought it (although I usually use a Mapex Daisy Cutter or Chad Smith Signature snare).
- Evans heads (kind of the only thing I'm picky about outside of drum sticks and pedals - sometimes I use a $45 Sound Percussion kit in these videos that still sounds fine as long as I have my Evans heads on it) - dunno what is on the snare but the toms are EC2s and the kick has an EMAD on it.
- Every cymbal in this vid is now completely shredded to the point they're no longer usable at *all*...but here I've got some sort of Zildjian hats, some sort of thinner Bosphorus crash, a 20" Zildjian K Hybrid Ride (RIP, you were a beast), and an unknown busted Sabian ride stacked on top of an unknown busted China.
- And DW 5000 pedals and Vater drumsticks (Power 5B here). Although I sometimes (rarely) use other brands of sticks, but either way I prefer top-heavy-ish sticks in 55A to 55B sizes in "extreme" lengths (about 16.5" in length). Been largely digging the Vater Gospel Fusions and Zildjian Travis Barker sticks lately, and my go-to has been Vater Power 5As for a long time before that. A lot of people don't like sticks with a ball tip (which the Gospel / Travis Barker sticks have) since they'll dent your heads, but the Evans EC2 heads can handle it without denting.
- Oh yeah, and one Shure SM57 mic pointed at the snare to record the whole kit for that dirty/grungy/terrible sound (DAW = Logic Pro X).
Algorithm just blessed me. I’m late to the party. Sounds fucking sick dude
Better late than never. Welcome to the swamp dood
snare sound when its the camera audio is raw as fuck love it
Exactly
I'm honestly coming to like this version more than the original
Hell yeah. I wish my cymbals were more broken, though (like they are now)
That crash scared the fuck out of me
Lewis Jones honestly the Mic cut out a couple seconds after that crash but I figured why not be super dramatic and switch the audio right there haha
Fantastic.
Thanks dood...also, loving that creepy ass track on your profile
This was heavy af

I remember visiting my grandparents place (which had my uncles old drum set) after listening to the NL,DW album. When over there, I played this song over and over again, and playing along to it. I don’t usually play drums, but it sounded in-sync which is good enough for me.
It’s the perfect song to just smash drums to :3 Amazing cover ^^
insane. ur a phenomenal drum player.
God damn, this sounds GOOD.
Thanks dude, this was my first vid to go "viral" (by my very modest standards)
this is my favorite drum cover i think i have ever heard, its just that good
i literally smiled through this entire thing
This is one of the best drum covers i've ever seen. What cymbals do you use?
Thanks dude. These are all *super* broken by now - but I think here I have a 20" Zildjian K Hybrid Ride, Zildjian ZBT hi hats, some sort of Bosphorus crash, and an old cracked Sabian ride stacked on top of a cracked China.
@@karlfagerstrom thanks man!
THIS ISSSS WAT I CALLL DEATHHHHH GRIPSSSSS
Can you do me a favor and help me pick between takes of a guillotine cover? I got an opinion from someone else but I could go for a second opinion; they all have fuck ups but have varying degrees and different types of cool shit
so fucking sick
Bro youre fucking wild i love this
Hell yeah thank you for checking it out!
Shit like this is why I drum. I love drumming and I absolutely love this. Coolest Death Grips Drum Cover ever!
Agreed, the cathartic beating of drums is literally why they were invented
MY MAN
🙏🙏 Just trying to do justice to Zach
holy fuck man nice work
this is great
Thanks d00d
The first 25 seconds of your cover feel like WAR DRUMS
You can thank Death Grips' songwriting for that (also, thank you)
Holy shit this is amazing!
Maiye thank you!
No problem, keep up the great work!
This is awesome!! make sure to tag your videos good so you get more views!!!
Metalhiram thanks Dude! I don't know what I'm doing with hash tags and whatnot but I'll get in there and add stuff regardless
This one goes so hard, bro. It's perfect.
fantastic great job my friend ;)))+1like Kar ;)))l
🙏 🙏 🙏
Yeah this is it
Oh shit I'm feeling it
Epic.
Good shit bruh
Respect :)
🙏
Bro you got damn spaghetti arms and it's glorious
There's a-fancy magic in-a-the linguini appendages 🤌
@@karlfagerstrom you must be a fan of Capellini?
Of course. Although I mostly just eat protein, despite what my noodly figure suggests
@@karlfagerstrom gotta get the muscles to bully your drumset somehow
I actually can’t stop listening to this, have you thought about getting a mic to record your covers?
Thank you 🙏 I do use a mic, but only one (pointed at the snare)... might be a good time to try actually getting good at setting up mics for each drum the way you're supposed to (I've recorded myself a million times with one mic, and *been* recorded by someone else with a full setup a bunch of times, but I've only multi-tracked myself a few times so I'm not great at it)
4:45-5:01 best moment
Dude, I *love* shredding. But nowhere *near* as much as I love just beating the shit out of the drums. That was *easily* my favorite part to play (thank you).
YUH
great video goddam 👍😩
Thanks dude...probably should make some more, I definitely fell off in putting these out
you should they’re so good 👌
This shit is HARD
DG gets me noided
fuck that was sick
УХ ТЫ!! Очень круто!!!!
Do you have an isolated recording of just your drumming without the song in the background? I'd love to do something with the audio.
I wish dude but I'm pretty sure it's been lost to the sands of old laptops / time. I'll letchu know if I recover it though
Jesus fuck this was good
I wish i could play like this.
I wish I had come up with the username 'just take my pants off right now'
Fucking great🎉
Thank you 🙏
YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
YUH!
Can someone transcribe the sheet music for this?
bro how did you learn this, just slowing down the song? and then practice a fuck ton?
@@burlingtoncoat1 I just improvised over the original beat the way Zach Hill does live (i didn't copy his improvisations note for note - they're different every time, anyway). The actual recorded electronic beat is pretty simple
Oh shit... I thought the distorted signal was intentionally 😅
РАЗЪЕБ ❤️🔥
Uhh, I think your cymbal is broken.
Holy shit I brutally murdered the word cymbal. I feel stupid.
They've all only gotten more broken since...the Bosphorus is only about 2/3 of a cymbal now
@@karlfagerstrom Ouch.
just like zach intended
i really appreciate the inclusion of the song in the background but i really wish you hadnt or atleast had some version without it cause i'd really love to sample some parts from this
Damn dude if I'd known I'd have sent it your way...I'll check to see if i still have the logic project / iMovie project / whatever. I tend to delete stuff a lot cuz I'm always outta data storage and i have to make room, but there's a (very slim) chance it's on an old external hard drive
you'd make me a very happy man, these drums are fucking raw, but its chill if you dont, still appreciate your effort
@@LuciferianStrings I'll definitely let you know, cuz I'd love to hear what you do with it, but I'd also say don't get your hopes up. All I do in my free time is make weird beat instrumentals (in addition to drummy videos) and Logic projects take up a *bunch* of memory so I'm kinda forced to delete stuff very regularly :/ but you never know! I'll check the old external HDs just in case
@@karlfagerstrom thanks man, the beat part is my blind spot when it comes to music, so maybe we'll complete eachother here, who knows, and although im not great with the beat i can certainly appreciate your talents, good luck with your endeavours
id die to have this in sheet music
how do i get this sound its so good
friends
Anyone who is noided is a friend of mine.
Can you please do Emme by Phonon??
Holy shit this is cool but also weirdly way harder than it sounds on drums. But would be hella fun to try
@@karlfagerstrom YES
can you do a cover of whammy please?
I might be down, but I also was maybe thinking about covering the djent cover of it, too (by Avant Temporal). Have you checked out that EP? If you like djent even a little bit, it's pretty dope (I normally don't - outside of Meshuggah, which I love and I guess qualifies - but I def love that AT DG/djent EP)
Karl Fagerstrom i havent heard it, but it sounds pretty good, now im gonna check it out
охуенно
💪
It’s look like u are fighting with your drums.
I'd say I'm not fighting with them as much as we're fighting together against something....but to each their own
this was noided af
I live noided 24/7
why the drum fills
Because it's literally exactly what Zach Hill does (lots of fills). This song would be boring as hell live with that basic kick/snare pattern
@@karlfagerstrom you're right for a moment i forgot that all of the drums on nldw were synthesized. yer doin good lad 👍
Thanks dood
@eyedropsimulator I think he still plays on every record right?
Yes he does, but sometimes they sample very simple clips of him for the instrumentals. Or he'll play complex patterns, but those will trigger synths and samples (like on NotM). But live, he's always shredding. Which is why that's the only way it makes sense to play it.
I liked it quite a bit until you got to the first verse. Way too show-offy for me.
Yeah Zach Hill would *never* play that many notes... . . . . . .
but hey, to each their own
That fill at 2:26 and 2:49 o;
2:26 is a staple go-to that I definitely overuse but it feels reaal good
Literally one of the best covers ive heard
