What a huge amount of fun and entertainment this was. I assume it's Hugh Laurie the polymath - actor, musician, singer, comedian, director, producer - how much talent can one person have......
Simon Prebble does a fabulous job with this excellent story. It's rare to find oneself smiling wryly every few minutes in the course of a thriller. Hugh Laurie really is wonderful in so many ways.
Am only 3 1/2 hours into this story and it is brilliant. So refreshing to listen to the product of a gifted and highly skilled author, his timing, plot, everything is just right, like a magnificent piece of music. I hope Hugh writes more novels.
Thoroughly enjoyable, both the writing and the narration. Such a pleasure after abandoning numerous ghastly computer generated offerings. A/I narration is like getting a robot to play hamlet on stage.
Hugh Laurie is amazing. A bit of Fry and Laurie. I loved him in House. He's an amazing musician. Now I find out he writes books... I'm super excited right now.
Hugh Laurie wrote a great book and this reading was superb. Thank you ! The story is magnificent. The sarcasm is priceless. I wish this was a trilogy. Bravo!
*I wish it had been made into a movie or that he had continued writing. I bought this when it first came out and he said he had intended to play the lead role but he was getting older and it wouldn’t work*
I wasn't sure when I saw this book first, but I have been pleasantly surprised. It is an excellent listen, right to the end. The kind of book you, at first hope there is a sequel, but then on reflection you do not want to water-down the character. Thanks for the upload.
I think Hugh Laurie's initial deal was for three of these but he hasn't delivered as yet as he's been so busy with other projects. At least, that was the buzz at the time of its initial publication.
Wonderfully performed (this wasn't just read, it was acted out astonishingly well). Such a witty, wild ride! I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to thrilling end! Thank you!!👏
Dear Dr House! Hugh Laurie, gorgeous, brilliant- he can do it all. Enjoy this if you love the sarcasm of Bond taken further! And do buy his CDS for great musical accompaniment! Terrific narrator too. Thanks for posting.
A B S O L U T E L Y BRILLIANT. Don't let the first few minutes put you off ( it nearly put me off ) It's a great story, not just over-ornate language ( first few minutes again )
The Bird Savior. My thoughts on a alternative title but I guess if I write a book I can have an opinion on the title. Great book, great narration, pretty big fan of the cover art as well. All around well done thanks for posting.
Wow! I love it from the first chapter, is it the actor from the House TV series, I tried looking for other book from him but couldn't find it, please keep writing and thank you to the narrator, just brilliant, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Does it ever get explained why Thomas Lang was not more curious why Sarah Woolf had such a change of heart between collaborating with Lang on a story, and appearing with a gun in his flat ... and even more deserving of his curiosity: how she discovers its location?
I feel like most things in this book never get explained lol. We found ourselves in scenes that are seemingly unconnected and inconsistent with the previous scenes...
28:24 😂 4:59:03 the wage stopped going up sometime in the mid 80's, in real terms there hasn't been a single government that tried seriously to do anything about it. Maybe Biden with his " support," for the unions?
It's disorienting to hear Hugh Laurie speak British when I expected him to sound American like he does on HOUSE... [This story is hilarious in spots I actually laughed out loud!]
@Geoffrey Currie Thanks for sharing what must have seemed bitingly clever at the time, but it's obvious he's referring to the regional accent.. you do realize the use of the English language varies greatly around the world, from town to town, but no place so much as in the states, where Laurie starred in a wildly popular tv show while portraying a midwestern american accent so well that most Americans are shocked to learn he wasn't born and raised there.. given this new awareness, hopefully you won't be so quickly offended next time you're on the world wide web, confronted with people using terminology that doesn't fit in at your local pub.
I find the sniper fake assassination somewhat unbeleivable . He says an L96A1 is used without the 'stock'. It actually has two polymer shells which make up the stock, thumbhole grip and fore grip,to fire the barrel, receiver and trigger, with a scope on top, without the 'stock' or a bipod accurately would be virtually impossible. It would also be chambered in 7.62 x 51 NATO,not .22L. More than that,a Javelin (whichever type) is not going under a bus,nor getting wrapped in a bit of grease proof paper,an AT 4 or LAW 80,although not guided, would have made more sense for smuggling.
Yes , it's witty / amusing etc but the relentless wisecracks end up just being irritating . Just as much a cliche as Bond in its own way . Might be bearable in 10 minute chunks ?
This could get confusing! I had no memory of making these comments, then I noticed the lack of a picture. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to listen to this, but seeing as how my namesake listened, I’ll give it a go.
I think that you've had a way better luck with books than i, since this far better than the worst books i've read. Hell, it actually surpasses Terry Pratchett's weakest book in my opinion.

I read this book when it came out and it was amazing ... love being able to enjoy it again with this brilliant narration

Hilarious and yet quite suspenseful. Please write another, Mr. Laurie, continuing the adventures of this same chap!

He’s plays a very good villain too. The Night Manager was in my view superb

I had never heard of Hugh Laurie or Simon Prebble before today. What a find! I am enthralled. Thank you so much for uploading..
Hugh is a famous actor and Simon does many audio projects I think he is an actor/narrator American/English too, he’s 80! Great voice
Hugh Laurie is the famous Dr. House from the House hit TV medical drama also famous Brit comedian.
What a great book! Suspense and sarcastic comedy all combined. Read very well and very enjoyable!
Absolutely wonderful, what! Talented man, incredible writer, thank you.

Refreshing. Narrator , brilliant, this book has everything needed .
The chapter titles are a tremendous thing 👌
Thoroughly enjoyably, implausible 😊. Write another one, Hugh, you old bar'steward. I reckon you have one more in you. Come on, tickle tickle 👍.

Excellent. Story . Thrilling, enthralling hilarious Narration perfect also
“Offsides at Pearl Harbor”. A perfect description 👍😁
fantastically entertaining in script and narration. Also, slightly longer than the 100yrs War.
Hugh Laurie is the most sarcastic person ever. What a career.

What a gem! The only minor issue is that my creative workflow is being severely affected as I tend to burst into laughter too often! 🤣
Try it late at night, with everybody else asleep.

Finished readind this book in portuguese today and came to check some facts about the translation 😂
Great.
Great story, fine reading... but sometimes very dirty details in the "bloody" scenes 😞I'm glad I don't have to watch this as a movie.

@@April-t6z Nothing to do with a local pub. There is no language called 'British', despite your pathetic diatribe.
Yeah...British isn't a regional accent.
Hello, Mr Huge! Are you a Dr or not?
Isn’t hugh Laurie the dr house actor
It's cute that Mr. Laurie thinks CNN wouldn't be in the pocket of the MIC. Then again, this was 1996... a less cynical, less overtly political era.
The best

The narration makes all the difference. I can’t do the robot voice, it ruins even the best books for me.
Not nearly as bad as some comment, and not as good as others. But listenable? Sure. Thanks, I guess.
Nicely written, but the style makes it hard to follow...

Rambles too much. Didn't even catch my interest for a second. He is definitely not Dick Francis or Alistair Maclean.

Difficult to argue against such a reasoned analysis but the book is fine. You must have read a lot of books to judge this as the worst.
