I was surprised by the cool nights in Oahu but the constant breeze made it even cooler. I’d suggest buying a hoodie or jacket from Hawaii instead of packing one. That way you get a souvenir and something to keep you warm at night if it gets too cool for you.

We bought reef safe sunscreens, and they were awesome. But our water shirts were game changers. We needed so much less sunscreen and could wear them in and out of the water as we walked around town or hiked too, which meant less shirts needed overall and less sunburn!

      Great point, all purpose shirts

I went to Oahu last August and I agree that a water shirt is a must! They dry off in less than 10 minutes and that was basically the walk back to the hotel from the beach

Thanks again for another great vid!
I swim/snorkel a lot, and HATE to get salt water and sand in my ears so...
I wear earplugs and use "bone conduction" headphones for music; I get the ones that play through the cheekbone. (FINIS is my favorite, and yeah, very clear)... just load your playlist.😁

I always bring a float-especially when I stay in Oahu bc there are so many fun, calm places to float. I pass it off to another vacationer when I leave and use that space to pack my souvenirs.

So often folks think the sunscreen they are bringing is reef safe because the words are not well regulated. As a seasoned Hawaii visitor, I suggest folks simply buy their sunscreen on the island where the state has regulated their use appropriately and banned the sale of ones that say "reef safe" but aren't.
    What I always pack:
    1. Rashguard pants & shirt- yes I snorkel with full coverage. Science is starting to suggest even mineral sunscreens are bad for the reef, so I'm aiming to wear as little of it as possible
    2. My own snorkel mask/fins, well-fitted ones matter, but only buy them if you are going to do it at least every year. Avoid "full face" ones as they are actually kind of dangerous despite feeling more intuitive.
    3. Very breathable full sleeve length shirts, like linen- still to avoid sunscreen
    4. a thin but slightly oversized rain jacket/windbreaker with a hood
    5. Watershoes or hiking sandals designed for water
    6. Refillable water container in a hiking sling bag with a front pocket
    7. 2 Turkish towels per person- very quick drying, and not leaving microplastics around like microfiber equivalents. One protects your car seat from water/mud that may get on you during swims/hikes, the other to dry yourself.
    8. Stream2Sea leave-in conditioner, slapping some into your hair even if you can't rinse the salt out with help loads if your hair dries wild and tangly.
    9. A few bathing suits. Most days I use bikinis instead of undergarments because they dry fast if it rains, your day is more open to impulsive decisions, etc (and they are easier to go to the restroom in than full coverage)
    10. A sunhat, preferably with a strap in case it gets windy or you are wearing on a boat
    11. A mosquito bite prevention product, either in a small easy to carry tube, or in wipe form. Keep in sling back front pocket.
    12. Cut pieces of moleskin for spots where your shoes start to rub your feet raw on hikes. Keep in your sling bag front pocket
    13. Dramamine for boat tours
    14. Reusable bag for shopping/farmers markets
    15. A go-pro. Even if you don't want to take underwater pics (you should) a go-pro can survive the rain, or splash on a boat, or getting dropped or bonked on things (latter back onto the boat for example). A cinching wrist strap is highly recommended. Floating handles are great too, but with my wrist strap, I've never needed it, whereas my husband has needed his floating handle several times because he doesn't do the strap. He's way more likely to lose a camera than I am.

Great list. I think you’ve covered the important points. When I travel anywhere, I pack a pillowcase so I can be sure that my face is laying on some thing clean and in case there’s soaps/etc. irritate my skin. I bring my own mask and snorkel so I know that it fits right and is well sanitized. Of course you can easily rent or buy. Definitely bring a waterproof pouch for your cell phone, it also helps to keep sand out. And a small waist pack to carry essential items. Things that I would need, but can easily buy when I get there… Sarong which have so many uses, Hat with a good brim, insulated bag either medium or large to keep food and other stuff cool.

Packing cubes are must!!! I unpack my suitcase into the drawers with clothing still in the cubes and it makes it a breeze to repack when it's time to leave. I also think a hat, sunglasses, rash guard/sunshirt, light summer clothing,(puffy jacket-Haleakala)water shoes/sandals, bug spray, microfiber towel, water bottle, smart phone, battery bank will pretty much do it. You can rent or buy pretty much anything else you might need.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide

Water socks that fit under snorkel fins! Saves me from blisters and cuts. Also, a good loofah for scrubbing off that stubborn mineral sunscreen.

  • @cassandrabriggs9133

Great list! We bring all these. If we're staying in a hotel, we also pack a super-flat, collapsible cooler for picnics and a collapsible backpack (=stuffs into its own tiny bag) for hikes/shopping. We always have those cords that keep your sunglasses from falling in the water, and we prefer to pack our own mask and snorkel (we rent fins). I also like to pack a backpacking towel and big, loose sun dress to change into/out of swimsuit under, for if we're driving around and unexpectedly see a great place to hop in the water.

We also bring our disposable rain ponchos because they take up much less room than our raincoats but when you need them they are awesome to have!

So it sounds a bit weird but water shoes are my favorite hiking shoe. They’re great. Wore them hiking in the redwood forest as well as rocky hikes. No water needed. They’ve got such good traction and breathable. If you happen to run across a stream, well you’re covered for that too.

Will definitely add these items to my packing list. Never had Tevas but, feel I can substitute them for beach flip flops and then use then for hiking or even around town. Wouldn't have considered bug spray but will now. Thanks for these great tips!

We are headed to Maui in May of this year. My wife and I really enjoy your informative videos. What about binoculars?? Are they worth bringing?

Most weather apps can provide more local weather. Be sure to check the actual city you’ll be staying in. Each city can vary wildly.

That’s really good list, especially the sunscreen it’s really easy to get sunburned even when the sun‘s not shiny

100% on the polarized vs regular sunglasses! I rented a paddle board from out front of the outrigger reef and the guy wanted to show me where the reef was. I ouldnt see it so he let me borrow his to see and WOWEE-WOW-WOW Whata difference!

I pack a safari sunhat and Tropicfeel Jungle shoes (it's the only footwear I pack - actually I don't even pack it, just wear it on the plane). Rashguard too, like someone else said - so much less sunscreen lotion needed.

Listen to some good Hawaiian music to relax before the trip. Remember since covid many places are short staffed and doing their best.
For Kauai, bring bug spray. Also brought if for the farm tours on the Big Island. Natural ones don't work well for me so I need deet.

That was really helpful! I just had the gooder sunglasses in my hands and the line was too long at the store so I put them back. I fully regret that decision now.

I always bring an umbrella, not for the rain but for a sun shield. It's a trick I picked up living in Denver. That way I can hang out near the beach without overheating.

Back in the early 90's we visited the Islands as a family. My mom packed a huge cooler full of food (milk, veggies, etc.) so she could cook our meals and checked it on the airplane for us to take. I'm not sure that's allowed today but it was a smart idea since food is so expensive in Hawaii and for large families it's not always economical to eat out for every meal.

The trick is to shop local/small. Get fruits and veggies (and eggs!) from the Farmer's Market and noodles from "international" markets. Look for roadside stands selling fruit. Lucerne and Meadow Gold for dairy. Depending on the island, making meals at your rental will save big $$. Except on Maui!! Food Trucks and Local Restaurants are amazing!

I’m a big fan of the Olukai shoes. The Nohea Moku boat shoes are great for the beach and for hiking. They dry really fast and they work at the beach and in restaurants. You can slip them on and off really quickly. I think they are a good alternative to the tevas

Our last visit to Maui was 3 years ago and I was checking air fares for January and finding out air fares have tripled since last visit. We somehow will make it work.

That stinks! They were predicting higher fares with fuel costs and demand. Best of luck, hope you can make it!
