The opening scene with Tony and Tony B sitting in the backyard together was filmed in the middle of winter. Gandolfini said it was miserable pretending it was a hot day sitting there sleeveless. If you look you can see his arms are pretty red bc of how cold it is outside.
I think sometimes people let the character of Janice affect their view of how amazing Aida Tuturro is in that role. She's remarkable. I'm honestly surprised she never won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress and hasn't gone on to do equally compelling work.
Indeed. If I recall, upon the show concluding and media outlets interviewing each cast member about the series, Turturro only half-jokingly was asking if people in the industry could put a good word in for her (i.e. to land another role in something). It's a complete shame but it was clear that she knew the character of Janice was so overwhelmingly toxic that it would likely stop her from being cast in other roles. Like Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico and Drea de Matteoshe (and so, so many others throughout the series), she was exceptional.
I remember in a previous interview somewhere that I cannot seem to find at the moment, David Chase stated that she was so good in season 2, stealing scenes from some very captivating actors, that they were compelled to bring her back into the narrative for the show. He also said in that interview that people tend to forget the fact that Livia was her mother too, thus the toxicity of her character was inherented by being raised in the Soprano home. Now, how Barbara turned out relatively normal is something worthy of discussion. Why are Tony and Janice so destructive and filled with rage, but Barb is not? Side note: I wish they would have brought Barb more into the series. She could have been an intriguing antithesis to her siblings.
@@CoryGasaway My take on Barbara (from my own experience of being the youngest child in a very dysfunctional family), is that her survival mechanism as a kid was the same as mine: the good old "try to make yourself as invisible as you can". You keep to yourself, mind your own business, and try to stay on the periphery of the chaos as much as you possibly can. That way everyone else is so busy tearing each other apart that they pay no attention to you. Taking up that position at a young age most definitely gives you a very different perspective and mentality than the rest of your crazy ass family. It makes perfect sense that Barb has very little to do with her siblings and keeps her distance from the whole family. She doesn't want anything to do with their lifestyle and toxic BS. She knows exactly who and what Tony and Janice are. You can't ever have a real bond or relationship with a sibling who is a narcissist/sociopath.
@@Johnny6666Her family could help. She is related to John Turturro and another Turturro, both actors. I remember John Turturro from the films "Quiz Show" and Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever". The characters Phil Leotardo and Gloria Trillo also were in that film as well.
I think one of the most fascinating parts of The Sopranos is Tony's slow descent into becoming his mother, and it's on full display in these two episodes
Sad to see so many people took this one scene out of context. It is all connected with what he talked about with Melfy, what happened with Chris and the other Tony on the farm. He did this because it dawned on him who he is, and that no matter what his core wont change, same applies to Chris ..hence the comment at the restaurant after the farm to Chris. Also Janice constantly tried to be someone else from her young adulthood and of course she didnt change at all regardless of how many times she tried to reinvent herself. In this episode Tony finally accepted who he is and he was happy about it, because he knew his flaws are a part of what makes him himself. He did this to Janice not because he is sadistic or evil, but because he became angry when he saw all the fake bs Janice was doing again and knew that its just an act on the surface ..so he triggered her to kind of prove his point and show that the real Janice is there no matter what she does. And to top all of it and hammer in the message you get the awesome song for the outro .."I'm not like everybody else.." The buildup and the resolution was masterfully crafted ..too bad that many people views this scene as disconnected from the episode as a whole and the leadup from other episodes to it.
Young people will never understand how big of an insult it is in Italian and irish culture to pay for something in front of the father head. Its saying they can't afford to take care of their family. Its a culture thing. Especially to people who are traditional.
I think it may also be a geographical thing. Like Finn, I'm from California and picking up a check for parents after getting our first money in our teens and twenties was pretty common in my circle of friends. Looking back, the energy was really similar to when little kids go "Look mom! I made a sandwich all by myself!" or "Dad! Look! I can ride my bike with no handlebars!" In that mindset, Tony's reaction is like the dad screaming, "No handlebars?! You think I can't ride with no handlebars?! I invented no handlebars and now I drive a car! A Fucking car! How dare you disrespect me you motherfucker! I'll drive over your no-handle ass in my car!" It seems insane and, ironically, very fragile to me. I've thought about this scene a lot because I was almost in the same situation as Finn in my first relationship. Fortunately, I had the good sense, or good luck, to run it by my girlfriend before going out to dinner with her very traditional Irish father from Chicago. She emphatically told me to not do that as though I had suggested I would spit in his face instead of shaking his hand when we met.
@@pauldoser9873 I'm from a traditional Irish family and it's like tony said "you eat I pay when you get your own family you pay" . It started when he was telling her to put down the phone to the telemarketers when he could see she was handling it well

Just when you see daylight, you’re brought back to the point where you see Tony for what he really is all about. Tony wasn’t happy unless he could see sadness in Janice. If Janice was prospering, it meant she was bettering herself.. and he couldn’t have that.
I remember this series got so much shit for many years, people criticized the lack of social commentary, which is nonsensical, it's full of that. But recently new generations have revived its popularity and people seem to hold it in much higher regard nowadays.
Many people feel the ending of Cold Cuts is the defining moment of Tony's downward spiral into being irredeemable , his conscious decision to be petty, vindictive, selfish , spiteful etc... to anyone and everyone even those closest to him for little to no reason , his complete crossing over to "the dark side", not that he wasn't already very far gone but this was the point of no turning back. Great reaction as always.
I’m sure it’s already been recommended, but another great series to consider when you’re finished with this one is “The Shield”. It’s one of the branches of prestige t.v. spawned by “The Sopranos” and criminally overlooked by reactors.
She is very pretty obviously but in my experience it is just not worth it with the family/friends she has, unless you have similar connections. When/if things go bad, you're looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.
The dinner situation is definitely an Italian thing. It’s the father’s duty to provide, and paying for dinner is a big thing. I’m 40, and my father has only let me pay for dinner once for his birthday.
It's crazy to imagine that Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Jennifer Melfi) was David Chase's original first choice to play the role of Carmela Sorprano, but she didn't want the role because she felt it was far too similar to the role of Karen that she played in Goodfellas as Ray Liotta's character, Henry's wife. So she told him she was more interested in the role of Dr. Melfi, and he eventually agreed and let her play the role which she totally owned. I think it turned out great though, since Edie Falco who eventually got the role of Carm TOTALLY owned it and made it her own. It would have been a hell of a different show if it had worked out the way Chase originally envisioned it. (...and also if Edie Falco instead ended up playing the role of Dr. Melfi)
The look of shock/surprise on Samantha’s face during the Vito scene was priceless, that made my week. I’ve watched so many of your reactions to so many great movies and shows, and I can’t think of a surprise reaction moment that tops that. I love it, you two are the best!
The Vito story line was inspired by true events and John D'Amato who was head of the DeCalvacante family in NJ, the real life family the Soprano's is based on, true story look into it
I remember I can home that night...been dating my girlfriend for a few years... stormed into the house to surprise my parents..and announced : "we are getting engaged!" My father took a sip of his wine...and my mother smiled like she had just heard a bad joke... I never got married after that..not even now, 30 years later...my mother passed without a grandchild... listen to your heart, and not always to your parents...
26:01 i forgot what exactly is the story there as to why that weird transition is inserted in that shot but so many fans of the show noticed how awkward that shot is too lmao i think it had something to do with the director of that episode having a habit of doing stuff like that 💀
“You’re entitled to shit “ is the core of Tony. He thinks no one has a right to anything but him. He uses people, uses the pool, makes people angry on a whim. He doesn’t think anyone can have anything because that takes from him. He’s terrible and all the people around him are terrible.
Georgie getting beaten up by tony is a running theme. Tony at the end with janice was perfect. He knows that janice can snap at anytime so him baiting her was amazing
So when it comes to families especially Italian families, there is a respect thing that occurs with the heads of the family and potential up n comers. What Tony did ala threatening the kid was bad but it does exist this dynamic. As the head of this family I take care of you. Once you are the head of your own knit, you will take care of them and I will give the responsibility of taking care of my dear daughter to you. Until then I will.
Tony uses money to justify his actions and eexxuse them. He got the police officer fired in a precious season then offered him cash to make him feel OK about it. He can then say to himself "hey were even. What a good guy I am". And paying for dinner is the same. Being the person that pays puts him in a lostion of authority. As long as he's paying he calls the shots. He does it with Carmella also. As long as she takes the money, jewels, cars etc.. then it gives Tony the ok to cheat in his head. He no longer has to feel guilty because "they're even".
Well to be fair the alpha male disguise Tony wears is more of him trying to replicate the men he looked up to, the strong silent type. The point imo is that it’s nothing more than that, a disguise, it cracks whenever someone pokes it cause of his lack of manhood. In reality the strong silent type are tortured people, they are secure enough to not be loud mouths, they wouldn’t want anything to do with Tony’s type.
My grandfather almost walked out on the family at easter when my mother and grandmother tried to pay the bill while he was in the bathroom, "just to be nice". Its an old school italian thing...not a bitch move.
@@maiaharete3028 anyone that is of Italian culture or even knows some knows that is a major insult to the head of the house. It's the exact same thing as saying you can't afford to take care of your family. And I'm pretty sure people would get pissed if someone said that.
It’s about respect. The reactors and anyone else agreeing with them can say whatever they want but it’s all about respecting Tony’s position as the head of his household.
Out of all the reactions that was the line of the year I don't know if he's going to be killed or forced to be a lover😂😂😂😂 I honestly laugh for 5 minutes straight
The reason Tony manipulated janice into a temper tantrum is simple: He was jealous. One ongoing theme of the show is the inability of the characters to change, no matter how many chances they get, and that starts with Tony. Deep down, he knows what Melfi said about rage is 100% true, but he is unable to truly take a look at himself in order for his depression (and in turn, his rage) to get better. So Tony, being Tony is very resentful when Janice shows some actual progress...and since he cant be happy, he feels the need to bring her back down to his level.
The thing with Finn paying for dinner is very much a cultural thing. It's common among Italians, Latinos and Middle Eastern men... Despite being half Italian, Finn was essentially a WASP and this clueless to this world. Interesting aside, when I was younger and waiting tables, I had a weekly party of Syrian men who are at the restaurant where I worked. It was a bitter sweet experience because it was a guaranteed good tip, but also a guaranteed stressful moment when it was time to take them the check. The battles over who pays was a nightmare, occasionally members of the party would clandestinely pay while one of them was in the bathroom and I frequently had to break up fights in the aftermath. When they had their Imam with them the competition over who paid was even more dire.
I just love how this series touch the "toxic masculinity" topic through all those moments when you see how they fuck up nice moments just for ego or directly no reason at all.
Love your thoughtful reactions as always guys - especially being as these are also two of my favourite episodes. One note, I do hope you let the end credit songs play on for a little while watching. I’m sure it’s already been recommended, but another great series to consider when you’re finished with this one is “The Shield”. It’s one of the branches of prestige t.v. spawned by “The Sopranos” and criminally overlooked by reactors.
Finn proposed to the Boss's daughter to give himself protection from the mob
You mean protection from the blob
Meadow is fuckin crazy
Total brat.
“You act as if butter won’t melt in your mouth”. The perfect line to sum up Carmella.
oh man next 2 episodes are going to be amazing!
and these 2 are amazing as well. Season 5 is definitely a top season for me.
Test fucking Dream.
Meadow is the type of girlfriend that will definitely get you killed
She is very pretty obviously but in my experience it is just not worth it with the family/friends she has, unless you have similar connections. When/if things go bad, you're looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.
The dinner situation is definitely an Italian thing. It’s the father’s duty to provide, and paying for dinner is a big thing. I’m 40, and my father has only let me pay for dinner once for his birthday.
this is true. Its disrespect to do that to Tony as the head of the family and father, he didnt mean it that way but it was.
Tony just wants everybody to be as miserable as he is. He couldn’t stand janice being happy
Melfi)
Karen, not Helen
Its close but felicia is hotter than meadow 👍
Not close
@@philmakris8507 that naughty tattoo finns only human 😅👍
The look of shock/surprise on Samantha’s face during the Vito scene was priceless, that made my week. I’ve watched so many of your reactions to so many great movies and shows, and I can’t think of a surprise reaction moment that tops that. I love it, you two are the best!
@@orangewarm1 ?
@@orangewarm1 Really? So how would you know that?
@@ForEternia I'm intrigued, what did Lee Lorenz say?
@@NotQuiteFirst This douche basically said "you should get out more".
That transition is the weirdest shit I've ever seen in the Sopranos. Makes me laugh every time.
Samantha's face at the Vito reveal...same face I had watching this episode when it first aired. Genuine shock.
They use guest directors, so whoever directed this episode used that transition with Chase' permission
Georgie the bartender I believe gets beat up 5 times 4 Tony and 1 Ralphie
The next three episodes are off the charts, Season 5 is fantastic.
The Vito story line was inspired by true events and John D'Amato who was head of the DeCalvacante family in NJ, the real life family the Soprano's is based on, true story look into it
You guys do the best post movie/TV show discussions. Keep up the great work.
"Sacre bleu, where is me mama?" 😂 I hate Tony for doing that, but the delivery is so damn funny!
I remember I can home that night...been dating my girlfriend for a few years... stormed into the house to surprise my parents..and announced : "we are getting engaged!"
My father took a sip of his wine...and my mother smiled like she had just heard a bad joke... I never got married after that..not even now, 30 years later...my mother passed without a grandchild... listen to your heart, and not always to your parents...
Man, that's sad!
26:01 i forgot what exactly is the story there as to why that weird transition is inserted in that shot but so many fans of the show noticed how awkward that shot is too lmao i think it had something to do with the director of that episode having a habit of doing stuff like that 💀
19:53 this is an example of why witness testimony is not always reliable.
“You’re entitled to shit “ is the core of Tony. He thinks no one has a right to anything but him. He uses people, uses the pool, makes people angry on a whim. He doesn’t think anyone can have anything because that takes from him. He’s terrible and all the people around him are terrible.
Meadows a bunny boiler 😃❤
Your sentence makes me think of a scene in "Fatal Attraction."
You hit it spot on. These people are so emotionally weak. The same weakness that probably lured them into this lifestyle.
Well, most people probably are but they’re not involved in situations as crazy as mobsters so it’s easier to stay on an even keel
When Tony noticed Janice could be happy, he realised he couldn't blame his mother for his problems anymore. A truly irredeemable sociopath.
Tony’s golf swing: one of his lesser crimes.
"Never fear Rome, the serpent lies coiled in Naples."
Georgie getting beaten up by tony is a running theme. Tony at the end with janice was perfect. He knows that janice can snap at anytime so him baiting her was amazing
Love uncle Pat. And the song at the end
The complexity of these characters shines in these episodes. It's so rare to see this level of introspection on tv!
I LOVE you guys reacting to this series... Great observations & actual analysis. Kudos Mr. & Mrs. Schmitt.
The show is so fuckin good
I wait all week for these, you do such a great job with the reactions!
The look they gave each other listening to Little Carmine made me laugh. they have no idea.
Sounds like us deciding what to have for dinner 🤣 so relatable 👌🏻
We're holding our breath for your reaction to _L.T.P._ !
The reaction to Vito!!! I was waiting for this!
I can't wait for the legendary episode that comes from it. No episode in this show makes me laugh harder.
19:08 was almost as good.
Vito is a meso fenoke!?
We watched the divorce scenes in law school/bar prep (as examples of unethical behavior) in ‘conflicting out’ other attorneys, etc.
Schmitt? Thats a fucking nickname, family name is Schmitterelli!
Well to be fair the alpha male disguise Tony wears is more of him trying to replicate the men he looked up to, the strong silent type. The point imo is that it’s nothing more than that, a disguise, it cracks whenever someone pokes it cause of his lack of manhood. In reality the strong silent type are tortured people, they are secure enough to not be loud mouths, they wouldn’t want anything to do with Tony’s type.
y’all bring light when things are dark… ABSOLUTELY LOVE this channel! And ESPECIALLY this series! Don’t want it to end.
Tony’s inner Livia came out in episode 10
My favourite series.
My grandfather almost walked out on the family at easter when my mother and grandmother tried to pay the bill while he was in the bathroom, "just to be nice". Its an old school italian thing...not a bitch move.
It's a bitch move to get angry about it. Just explain it calmly if you have a problem with anyone else paying. It isn't hard
Tony is a jerk
@@mykebreeden Don't care
Vito tip.of the iceberg 👍
I know we were all looking forward to their reaction to *THAT* scene......
Finn caught Vito red handed on a security guard in that pick up
The thing with Finn paying for dinner is very much a cultural thing.
The scenes Carmela about the end for her future
The next video will be Long Term Parking and I can’t wait for the reaction.
Such a great pair of episodes! This part of the show is crazy good.
Tony's not even finished messing with Janice.
The last 3 episodes are all way better than what we’ve seen so far.
"maybe we should just get married." has to be the most romantic line in existence.
I just love how this series touch the "toxic masculinity" topic through all those moments when you see how they fuck up nice moments just for ego or directly no reason at all.
I love silvio
Love your thoughtful reactions as always guys - especially being as these are also two of my favourite episodes. One note, I do hope you let the end credit songs play on for a little while watching. It’s another underrated element of the show that often adds further context or expands on the themes within each episode.
