Playing your guitar really helps 😂. When I say that, it's easy to watch UA-cam or whatever and think, oh you know my tone would be so much better if I own a custom shop this or an original this or that. But sometimes you just need to play what you have and get engaged with it. Learn new songs with your gear rather than buy new gear. that will make you a better player, and probably imrove your tone. I've done this myself, so I'm talking from experience here. I've played guitar for people, and the first thing they say is, do you know this tune or this song. Never have I had someone say "wow that custom shop strat really has that early hendrix tone compared with that mexican made strat you had." 😂
Yeah! I think that it might have been Pat Metheny who when he was asked "What's the best guitar for playing Jazz?" he replied "The one that you own" or something to that effect
I have wired both my Strats bridge pickups to the bottom tone control and have beeb using the volume control as well . Really changes the dynamics for different styles . Nice vid !
Never really utilized the pots until I got a Tele. The reason? No numbers on the knobs. For anyone who looks down sees the knobs not all lined up and that bothers them, change your knobs. Get rid of any visual indicators & allow your ears & your feel to dictate where the knobs are.
Love Jeff’s guitar courses & is an AMAZING teacher that has taught me a lot in last couple years & between what’s on TrueFire & through his site & just picked up Solo Blues course from the link & appreciate the discount & now excited to go through this now! Thank you & keep rocking Jeff🤘🎸🤘
I wired my strat so the neck tone knob controls both the neck and bridge pickups. That way I can control the tone of each pickup. It works well because the neck and bridge are never on at the same time and that way I don't have to sacrifice the tone control of any one pickup.
Tone and volume give lots of tone options, using a clean amp let's your hands get more involved in your sound. If you practice those you develop your own sound. Listen to Jeff Beck, his sound is mostly in his hands.
Another great video. I hear what your saying about the treble bleed circuit but don't you have more options havving a treble bleed circuit in the guitar and then adjust your tone control to taste no matter what volume you want?
Even though you’re probably correct, for me turning just the volume down and having it darken the tone without messing with the tone control just works better because in the heat of battle I don’t have time to mess with both volume and tone
@@JeffMcErlainOf course you’re right! I tend to favor simplicity so, turning the volume down to darken the tone is easier than having to fiddle with both volume and tone, it’s either that or I’m just lazy!
Sorry, maybe this is strange question, but…: No sure I get the idea, roll of volume, you get more clean, and a bit less high end, but you also lower the actual volume right? How do you balance that, cause you also need to sit right in a mix?
Great question, the slope and the volume is not necessarily linear as it clears up. I am not playing a lot of gain so I have a little bit of play before the volume drops too much and the gain cleans up.
all knobs on ten. My pots must suck because there does not seem to be much difference between 10 and.. say 6.. or 5 and 2 . Maybe I need to be playing louder?
Nothing more satisfying than being at a jam, or a gig and having that great tone. Nothing more frustrating than being in a room and for whatever the reason, the tone is just not nice.
Love the video, and the tones...except the gated hum coming through the strat. I'm a lifelong single coil player, so I know this comes with the territory and that gating can help, but the hum is so obvious when the gate is open I think its coming and going is more prominent than if the gate were left out. My non tech solutions... Flip polarity? Move away from computers, move a few steps away from the amp, tr turning lighting off and try running through a different AC circuit. To reiterate, I love the tone and the lesson, and generally prefer single coils for the sounds you are demoing, and I appreciate the treble bleed insights, but can't get past the hum on the strat. I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way...
Jeez man, I’ll be sure to reposition my camera, computer, interface, lighting, amps, monitors, every time the power changes in the ancient brooklyn wiring in my place. Please don’t take this the wrong way but…
@@JeffMcErlain yeah, sorry dude. If you like I'll delete the comment. Adding Brooklyn, lights, and computers to the mix complicates things and it's not like my vids are tech perfection.
@@thedigitalguitarist3541it’s all good man and I appreciate the apology. Let’s leave it as we can show how the internet how two adults can work things out! 🖖🏻
It had the opposite effect on me; it was encouraging to be reminded that I'm not the only one dealing with single coil hum. I live in a townhouse and can relate to the bad wiring.
So you prefer to use the volume and tone pots both as tone changers? What about the volume being for volume, and the tone for tone. Why would you want the volume to change the tone as it's backed off? Modern wiring with no treble bleed is completely useless. Makes good guitars boring.

Good tutorial! Really like your approach and style of teaching Jeff !

Thanks. It's a great reminder to guitarists to work with what we have and fret less (see what I did there? 😄) about the stuff that we don't have
Self imposed limitations are awesome!
Glad to see your youtube channel

I like the wide open middle. But all the options make sense.
Thank you very much. I hope to get a video about crankin' amps (especially solid state).

So many chasing tone, so few catching it. Great content Jeff.

Fantastic video, Jeff! I believe that Joe Bonamasa also talks about this in an interview (he’s playing a Les Paul; points the same though).
He does! Thanks for watching!!

You’d actually be surprised how much very small changes in volume and touch can clean up an edge of breakup tone.

You probably have a treble bleed in the circuit. Most modern guitars come with them!
