Kardashev's scale has been found to be lacking, as it ignores developments in efficiency. Recently people have been rethinking how we categorize civilization types under this scale due to expanded observations of how we ourselves are developing. Really, its not about the energy you have, but how much you can access for whatever purposes you desire. This is why Dyson clouds/spheres, might never exist. It would be unnecessary.
I've had similar thoughts. If we become so advanced, what's to guarantee that we'll take over every place the universe has to offer? We'd probably be content with living in a few solar systems, and simply explore everything else with little to no intereference. Our collective thinking could also change to believe that it's better to leave most of the universe alone as is. If we had the energy to supply all our needs in the most efficient way, then there wouldn't be a necessity to expand too much.

I find it funny that they kind of missed a step in the scale. Type 1, your planet. Type 2, your sun. Type 3, your galaxy. For me. Type 4, your super galactic cluster. Type 5, your universe. You definitely missed something : the second law of thermodynamics. Chaos can only increase in an isolated system. As a phenomenon, our society can grow exponentially, to a certain limit fixed by that law, which we are meeting right now. Here on earth we're able to sustain ourselves because energy is coming in from the sun and various other sources which don't interact with the biosphere. The only thing we'd need to with type 2, 3, 4, etc. civilizations is make sure we have energy sources not a part of our current sphere of life.

Life takes in the entropy of other systems and integrates it as energy into this loop, which delays the entropy of the whole and transforms this energy into a new form. This is what we call growth. The whole Kardashev's scale is about how life (and consciousness) transforms and expands itself through absorption of increasingly bigger entropic systems.

A type 4 civilization would be beyond our imagination; any conjecture would be utterly useless. As Arthur C. Clarke said, advanced tech to a lesser civilization would be indistinguishable from 'magic'. Such people would no doubt be electrovores, subsisting on something less primitive than grasses or animals. Tesla's broadcast power no doubt would fuel not only their tech but also the citizens themselves. Their motivation again would be beyond our imagination. By the way, none of this is impossible. If a civilization on, say, Proxima Centauri emerged a mere 2 million years before us (a tiny fraction of stellar life), then this would be the year 2,002,020 for them...

A Type III would be more of a Star Trek society than a Star Wars one, with much of Star Wars tech being rather primitive, while Trek regularly (if clumsily) plays with quantum technology, time travel, matter teleportation, etc...
I have 2 main problems with the Kardashev scale. 1. The lines are super arbitrary. The difference in energy/energy harvestable from a planet to a star to a galaxy to the universe are all completely different. The scale between the types is vastly different, pretty much random as they're a random selection of items to draw energy from. It really isn't one 'scale' if nothing is to scale. 2. No civilization would complete one level of the scale and move on. We are concurrently developing in all areas of the scale. We might get to 90% efficiency on earth, which would put us at .9, but what if we are also at 50% and 10% efficiency with the sun and the galaxy respectively, where does that put us? The sun is significantly easier to draw energy from than earth when accounting for knowledge alone. We'll probably be type 1 for any relevant technological factors before we are actually have full control of Earth, because it's easier to control the simple aspects of the solar system than the complex aspects of Earth.
My thoughts, i might be wrong, I would be happy to heat others thoughts too. In order to achieve type 2 or higher, we have to unite together and forget the concept of money and currency. Uniting as one, development will go faster and we will not worry about energy running out. Since we are getting enough energy, it will pointless to measure it by currency. By 3 or 4, we might leave body and live as consciousness, can travel around everywhere without getting damaged.

Kardashev's scale has been found to be lacking, as it ignores developments in efficiency. Recently people have been rethinking how we categorize civilization types under this scale due to expanded observations of how we ourselves are developing.
Really, its not about the energy you have, but how much you can access for whatever purposes you desire. This is why Dyson clouds/spheres, might never exist. It would be unnecessary.
I've had similar thoughts. If we become so advanced, what's to guarantee that we'll take over every place the universe has to offer? We'd probably be content with living in a few solar systems, and simply explore everything else with little to no intereference. Our collective thinking could also change to believe that it's better to leave most of the universe alone as is. If we had the energy to supply all our needs in the most efficient way, then there wouldn't be a necessity to expand too much.

Laws of existence state that every object in existence seeks to expand and occupy every proximate point in time and space... whatever you can perceive you seek to dominate. These laws apply to energy (dissipation and entropy), our biological forms (reproduction and territoriality), our ideas which seek to be reproduced in other minds and places of storage (and spread as memes in these places of storage) and this also applies to our consciousness which seeks to embrace and contain within it all objects that it is aware of their existence.

So in short, yes we will pursue being type IV entities... but I suspect that once we unhinge our minds from our biological restraints and discover higher levels of existence (or higher non-physical dimensions), then the Kardashev scale might become obsolete.

There is a limit to efficiency. You can't get more than 100% efficient; thermodynamics says even 100% efficiency is impossible. If you want to use more energy, you have to gather more energy. If you don't cap the human population at a finite limit, Dyson spheres or equivalent structures are inevitable. Good luck preventing population growth from happening anywhere, forever. If you miss even a single small town, they can populate the entire galaxy within a million years.

The only thing we'd need to with type 2, 3, 4, etc. civilizations is make sure we have energy sources not a part of our current sphere of life.
"Life" is a loop that circumvents the law of entropy. Life takes in the entropy of other systems and integrates it as energy into this loop, which delays the entropy of the whole and transforms this energy into a new form. This is what we call growth.
The whole Kardashev's scale is about how life (and consciousness) transforms and expands itself through absorption of increasingly bigger entropic systems.

Also, taking into account that cosmic events may inhibit our ability to harness every single star/celestial body in the universe, I'd say that we'd need to control about, for example, 50% of everything in the universe to become type 4.

A type 4 civilization would be beyond our imagination; any conjecture would be utterly useless. As Arthur C. Clarke said, advanced tech to a lesser civilization would be indistinguishable from 'magic'. Such people would no doubt be electrovores, subsisting on something less primitive than grasses or animals. I have 2 main problems with the Kardashev scale.
1. The lines are super arbitrary. The difference in energy/energy harvestable from a planet to a star to a galaxy to the universe are all completely different. The scale between the types is vastly different, pretty much random as they're a random selection of items to draw energy from. It really isn't one 'scale' if nothing is to scale.
2. No civilization would complete one level of the scale and move on. We are concurrently developing in all areas of the scale. We might get to 90% efficiency on earth, which would put us at .9, but what if we are also at 50% and 10% efficiency with the sun and the galaxy respectively, where does that put us? The sun is significantly easier to draw energy from than earth when accounting for knowledge alone. We'll probably be type 1 for any relevant technological factors before we are actually have full control of Earth, because it's easier to control the simple aspects of the solar system than the complex aspects of Earth.
So interesting. I can't wait until we're Type VII.

My thoughts, i might be wrong, I would be happy to heat others thoughts too. In order to achieve type 2 or higher, we have to unite together and forget the concept of money and currency. Uniting as one, development will go faster and we will not worry about energy running out. Since we are getting enough energy, it will pointless to measure it by currency. By 3 or 4, we might leave body and live as consciousness, can travel around everywhere without getting damaged.

Sooooo..........No Man's Sky? We, the Travellers, are between a Type 3 and 4 civilization because even though we have the Universe mapped, is "not" easy to access. We still have to physically fly our ships out of space and we relied heavily on our exosuits equipment and spaceships to survive in harsh environments. Also, the freaking cables man.....we can get into blackholes but we are not able to get rid of the damn cables. It seems fair! lol

You are thinking of a type 5, type 3 is being in control of your galaxy, type 4 is being in control of multiple galaxies, and type 5 is the entire universe, and type 6 or type omega is being in control of multiple universes
