Cathay Pacific pilots taxiing at slower speeds than other airlines but their takeoffs are so impressive and short compared to other airlines.
In recent news : Cathay Pacific has expressed concerns about some of its pilots taxiing at slower speeds than other airlines, leading to congestion on taxiways. The airline has stated that future instances of slow taxiing could result in disciplinary action. Speculations have arisen regarding the motives behind the slower taxiing, with some suggesting that pilots are intentionally prolonging taxi time to increase their pay. However, pilots argue that the minimal difference in pay resulting from extra minutes of taxiing makes this claim baseless. The issue was initially raised by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, highlighting data indicating slower taxi speeds for Cathay Pacific compared to other operators. The union representing Cathay Pacific pilots attributes the slower taxiing to poor pilot morale, which they believe is a smaller part of the larger issue of pilot shortages and reduced wages at the airline. Why is it that the aircraft turbine goes on 1/4 throttle in the beginning and then after a few seconds it is switched to full throttle. I see this behaviour in a lot of videos and even in Flight Simulator Simulations. Is there a technical reason for this?
Nice Video. I flew in the A350 from Munich to New York a few years ago, operated by Lufthansa. It was a nice experience but it was more of a coincidence that we flew with it. We were supposed to fly with A380, but the flight was canceled due to technical problems.
Well noticed mate ! I'm happy to answer your question here. Before applying full throttle, the pilot initially advances the throttle to around 1/4 position. This allows the engines to spool up and stabilize gradually. It helps in ensuring that the engines respond smoothly without any sudden surges or other issues.
After confirming that the engines are stable and operating within the expected parameters, the pilot then advances the throttle to the full position for takeoff. This gradual increase in throttle helps prevent sudden power surges, enhances engine performance, and contributes to a smoother takeoff.
Reduced Wear and Tear: Advancing the throttle gradually rather than abruptly can also help reduce wear and tear on the engine components. Sudden changes in power settings can put stress on the engine, and the gradual approach is a measure to ensure a more controlled and stress-free power application.
In summary, the practice of advancing the throttle to 1/4 before going to full throttle during takeoff is a standard operating procedure designed to enhance safety, provide a smoother departure, and protect the aircraft's engines. Seems like a normal takeoff, otherwise on a high energy takeoff,the aircraft attitude on rotation is different..
