The ultra-orthodox Jews also typically don't serve in the military, often getting exempt from conscription to complete religious studies. It creates a situation where some of the most pro-war Israelis know they won't have to fight themselves.
I feel like this should be talked about more in Israel. This is like Russia and the Russian elites conundrum all over again.
This podcast is wrong. Ultra Orthodox are not the most pro militant people around. Modern Orthodox and Religious Zionists are and they DO serve.

How interesting.
The warhawks are the ones that don't have to suffer the results of their actions, how comical.
"The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war" -Douglas McArthur
"Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war" Otto von Bismark.
Just like in America.
The people starting wars know that their children won't be the ones to fight and die for nothing!
You are missing the political power of the Haredi communities. They have an extremely high voter rate, and they all vote for the same two parties that openly work to only give Haredis benefits, and to exclude them from military service.
It’s like the opposite of starship troopers. I can’t see a secular military having great morale when a civilian government it near universally opposes gets it into a war it disagrees with.
Well that's how voting works. Good for them
Isn't this a good system ?
Politicians ruling in best interest of their voters ....
Reminds me of the early Mormons. That's why they got kicked out of a lot of communities until they ended up in Utah. High population (polygamy) and strong block voting.
@@blablup1214 If you vote for war, you should be willing to shoulder the burden.
I have two observations to make. 1) Based on this demography, there will be a time in the none too distant future when those who refuse to fight to protect their own country will be in a majority, which is going to be difficult. 2) If the Israeli government wanted to take a REAL long term approach to this conflict, they would realise that the best way to get people to have fewer kids is to make them rich. Rich people have fewer kids, so impoverishing and oppressing the Palestinians is literally the opposite of what would be in Israel's long term interests. As for everything else, as a Jew I'm horrified at the brutality of Hamas, embarrassed at the shortsightedness of the Israeli government and of my fellow Jews who seem to have lost all sense of perspective, and as a human I'm horrified by the brutality of the Israeli response, and by the collective amnesia that has put us all in this ridiculous situation. Overall, I'm just very sad.
Hardliners of any stripe always bring pain and suffering to others.
But money always buys political agency and influence. That is why xi of china is taking down oligarchs.
Yeah. I have family in Israel, so I’m frustrated whenever anyone claims that less than total sympathy and support for Israeli military action here equates to not caring about Jewish lives. It is specifically because I care about Jewish lives, and Arab lives, and the lives of all the civilians in this region of the world who are just trying to survive and build a good life, that I want this conflict to not escalate any further.
Your last point makes sense, but your forget that Gaza isn't a democratic country nor a country that wants to accept help, this is an an Extrimist Muslism Terrorist Territory, Hamas released a video of how they turn pipes the EU sends to make water purification plants into missiles and sends them into Isreal, people seem to forget that Israel supplies gaza with power and gas and that EU sends Millions in Aid. Unless Hamas is uprooted Gaza will always be what it is today.
Now I believe that what you are saying is kinda of what they are doing already since Israel has an arab population that come from the Palestine territory, and that have integrated into Israel that's why the Arab parties in Israel actually has votes
Their fertility rates are HIGH due to RELIGION, not poverty. Their Religious leaders are telling to have MANY children. Their political leaders are telling them to have MANY children. This is ALSO happening in INDIA between MUSLIMS and HINDUs.... WAKE UP IDIOT!

I'm going to say that I'm appreciating how hard you guys are working to remain balanced. I've got skin in the game with this conflict, and of course I'd prefer that everyone saw things as i do, i also appreciate that this is unrealistic, and sometimes we need outsiders to help us see our blind spots.
I disagree with the title that you have the video, that it created the crisis, but i do acknowledge and appreciate that in the video you say that it can't explain everything and it exacerbates the underlying issues.
As a last note, i just want to say that in this conflict, many people will say that if you're not completely on my side, then you are anti-us (pick either). This is not helpful to finding a resolution to the conflict, which is why it is so important for me to thank you for your hard work at giving as un-bias news as possible. Please don't pay attention to those who will try and drag you in either direction. Please don't be disheartened by them either. I hope and pray that we will see peace in the Middle East in our lifetime.
you're a good man, hope you're doing well mate
There will be no peace. Especially not in this conflict. But for you as the individual, I wish the outmost safety for you and your kin.
Hopefully, Israel will stop the violent oppression and illegal displacement and stop the open air prison, and then these horrific reprisals that hurt so many can finally stop.
Some basic respect for a fellow human is all that is needed.
This comment, I think that staying unbiased is more important than being popular. I disagree with the title and thumbnail but only because it's a bit clickbaity. It hasn't created the problem. It's made the problems more intense

As a Religious-Zionest Jew (Dati Lieumi), you don't understand the difference between Modern-Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox.
Haredim (Ultra-Orthodox) don't vote for the Religious-Zionest party which is Ben-Gvir and Smotrich's party.
Whilst Haredim are in the right-wing coalition, it is only because Bibi is willing to make a government with them and not because they are right-wing in any way.
Religious-Zionism and Haredism are very different politically, economically and nationally.

2. Economically: A lot of Haredi men don't work/don't work until their 30s. Most don't get a teudat bagrut (a deploma which you get if you pass a threshold of exams in highschool).
Datiim have very high learning standards both religiously and seculary and usually end up in similar jobs as seculars.

@@franciscomelo9004you know, most people who go to the trouble of emmigrating are either genuinely escaping persecution or are entrepreneurial and hard working. Meh, this is all a worldwide problem, not just an Israel/Gaza problem. The more educated and secular people don't have kids so they're doomed to be eventually outnumbered by those who do have kids. This is especially true in poorer countries since the most educated people in those countries tend to migrate to richer countries.
The correct policy for the Israeli government should have been to pour money into Gaza and the Palestinian authority to make sure Arabs are educated and have a great economy - that would decrease the birth rate while at the same time reduce extremism. It's hard to be extremist when you have to wake up in the morning to go to work.
Then we educate those as well. It's not as if we could stop relying on migrations with our low birth rates and companies are not about to stop pushing people to focus on their career instead of family so...
I would say that it’s less to do with education and secularism and more to do with children simply being unaffordable.

The high fertility rates in Gaza prove it isn’t an open air prison. Look at the fertility rate in Leningrad during the siege. People in extreme conditions don’t have children.
Interesting thought.
This is absolutely incorrect.
When people are desperate, they tend to have more and more children, so the chance of one of them surviving gets higher as the parents usually think they wouldn't live long enough to nurture them. having high birth rates can be a huge factor for violence.
When you have 9 children and everyone in your community has 9+ children then that means the parents can't really give those children love and affection properly and they will be outside most of the time instead of all inside the house. That means radical groups will have a huge pool of young people who will radicalize and become the father figures of these children. Poverty will further boost that.
Worse. Loosing a 1-2 of those 9 kids in a war, as long that the rest live in better conditions after victory, no longer looks so bad.
I'd say it's the same case for single parent households as well since they have to work all time and don't see their kids a lot and also missing a dad or mom can also cause negative psychological effects

Props to tldr. This is a very complex conflict and story that goes way back before any us where born. No side is free of sin nor of comitting attrocities. Nevertheless, if no one stops the cycle of violence, it will keep perpetuating itself. Don't listen to the idiots who are surely going to cancel tldr for not being biased.
Btw i'm not a native English speaker so idk if it's where or were lol
You guys realise that the core crusp of islam is to go to a foreign nation and have as many kids as possible, then convert that state to an islamic one. This is quite sickening ngl
Well it kinda yall fault not having enough children
Really gotta up the volume on this one
Decent analysis, but your discussion of the haredim is False. Haredis have two dedicated Haredi parties, "Shas" (mostly Misrachi) and "Yahadut Hatorah" (mostly Ashkenazim). Ben Gvir's / Smotrich's base of support is mostly "religious Zionists", who are less religious than haredis and much more interested in "Judea and Samaria" (noticed the small yarmulkes?). They form the majority of Israeli West-Bank Settlers, while the ultra-orthodox have been historically disinterested in anything outside their own enclaves/ communities.
There are a lot of problems with the ultra-orthodox population, but not with respect to settlements in the West Bank.
The parallels between this and the situation in Northern Ireland are very strong. TLDR barely cover Northern Ireland though. Neither on the UK channel or European.
The only parallel is there's two groups.
@@mikefish8226 if you think that, then you totally misunderstood the situation in Northern Ireland or Gaza or both. I'm betting you're from the UK and know nothing of your own countries less than glorious history.
@@frenzy1111 Actually my family is from NI, my mother was born there, and I've lived there. I also have an Irish passport because of this.... But carry on making incorrect assumptions.
And you can't see the parallels? The British are responsible for the existence of both states. Both states have/had an oppressor and an oppressed. Both states pushed one side so much they felt they had no option but to respond with violence. The change in demographics was identified as coming and it has indeed happened, upsetting a delicate balance in favour of Republicans. Prior to 1969, the majority of the Catholic community didn't have the right to vote. Everyone in Northern Ireland knows all this. Sure the Israeli and Palestinian flags are flown in each community. So tell me again, why do you say there are no parallels?
@@frenzy1111 You are so wrong. Since you are so wrong it would take too long to correct you. On the voting, anyone of age could vote in national elections however to vote in local government elections you needed to be a property owner, it wasn't a restriction on Catholics, it applied to all. Quite frankly we should bring it back for all elections at all levels throughout the UK. The country would be a better place.
great video!
Y'all need a sign off phrase before you cut away to the ad, like "and that's our daily news" or something lol. I got whiplash in that transition!
When you have 5 children, and no job, all living in poverty and all hungry, why do you get a 6'th child?
No birth control means that having more children is almost never a deliberate choice.
Probably because they think they will die even before adulthood. Even before the hamas attack hundreds of Palestinian children were taken to prison by Israel .
@@blackgold2589 So because you are horny and dumb, it justifies condemning a child to a life of poverty? Even in Gaza i refuse to believe condoms are expensive and hard to get a hold of.
All paid for by the state, because demographics is destiny
@@blackgold2589condoms are 5 cents a packet for god sake
Only thing I'll say is "political right" in Israel is complex as it encompasses secular zionist right wing, religious zionist right wing, and nonzionist and even anti-zionist haredi right wing. the secular right wing and nonzionist right wing often find themselves in fierce opposition. so what's unique about Israel's poltiical situation is their right-wing is comprised of anti-religious Zionist right wingers and even anti-Zionist extremely religious right wingers. It's not so simple to talk about the left and right.
fascinating. never thought about the demographic age profile impact.
now that was sth new and add a fresh perspective to the ongoing conflict.
The main problem of the Arab-Israeli conflict is that Israel's ruling party - the Likud, and it's head in the last 20 or so years, Netanyahu - do not have a long term plan for Gaza: their plan was more of less: starve them for food and options, until something breaks. Their "best case" scenario was that the humanitarian crisis becomes a humanitarian disaster that decimates the population, and the that isn't enough - repeat. The worst case scenario is that the Arabs will start a no-other-option war, giving Israel the excuse to wipe then off of the map - as in all things, we are currently living through the worst case scenario...
Over the last 30 years Israel has tried just about every option in Gaza and nothing worked, as Hamas does not want to live in a two state solution. What else could they have done without undermining their own security?
Israel will wipe all the arabs ? are we including egypt beacuse that's like 110m
@@DavidJBradshaw the Israeli government directly opposed extending the authority of the Palestinian Authority over Gaza. Numerous politicians have stated so clearly, numerous times, that if they give the PA a foothold in Gaza, then they will prevent the terrorist threat as then there will be no threat the Israeli government can hold over the Israeli population and the next thing is that the Israeli citizenry will demand a 2 state peace treaty.
@@DavidJBradshawpeople in gaza don't believe in Israel's promise because of illegal settlement in the west bank. And as Churchill said "You can't reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth."

War isn’t only tragic, senseless and idiotic, it’s far too normalised and accepted as a part of human interaction. We need to all become appropriately and constantly appalled at the sheer absurdity of having this be our main means of settling disagreements.
No one is standing in the way of world peace, aside from ourselves. We have no real enemies, aside from floods and earthquakes, cancer and viruses, potential solar flares and asteroid impacts. These should be our collective enemies, not one another.
All this takes is ethical and moral sophistication, it involves us all growing up and bit and becoming philosophically wiser as a people. It’s difficult but it’s not impossible.
Two Aliens pull up to Earths orbit in a space ship, they scan Earth. The pilot says - “they have advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear war heads” the co-pilot replies - “so, do we imagine we are dealing with an intelligent being?” The pilot just laughs and says - “no, they’re still pointing them at each other!!” They both laugh and fly away.
The entire history of humanity has been one side scoring own goal after own goal, and celebrating each one like the clueless apes we unfortunately still are.
Great analysis.
Thanks!

What about the demographics int he UK?
I don’t think the haredi Jewish population in the UK has much significance

The kingdom of Bagan in Myanmar once developed a population where 30% were monks and wouldn't pay taxes or fight. In the 13th century invaders quickly made use of that situation and Bagan is no more.
Now this was a good analysis.
One of the best videos you have done recently, because this aspect hasn't been discussed that much recently.
With all love and appreciation for the channel and the great team on tldr news. I wanted to say that as a non-native english speaker I find Zac notably more difficult to follow. His accent/tone and faster speaking pace is putting my ears to a real test.
It's a fairly standard English accent - ?
The Haredim are also notable for not doing military service and being supported by the government as long as they spend their time studying scripture. This was not a problem when they were a tiny part of Israel's population, but today it is becoming costly and drawing the envy of secular jews.
Excellent video and choice of angle. Demographics is a largely under-analysed issue when looking at all sorts of problems, particularly when compared to economics and culture wars which get excessive attention.
News: diversity is our strength
Also news: demography is absolutely detrimental

Barely anyone supporting Hamas, they support Palestine! Don’t confuse those two!

I haven't seen demographics in relation to this conflict or ethnic tensions as a consequence of mass migration from Islamic countries discussed anywhere in any mass media. Well done here!
