Something that stuck with me was when my english teacher said "Now theres two wars going on" when talking about the Israel-Palestine conflict. It reminded me of just how unaware most people are about conflicts are around the world. It's not their fault, but at least videos like this could potentially inform more people that there are more than just "two wars going on."
Well there are only two nations vs nations wars happening. The rest of insurgencies or civil wars.
What they really mean to say is that there are "Only two wars that matter to the American media." Also since most of them are civil unrest (especially the ones in Africa) the American media is less likely to care to highlight them on a large scale. It's not sensational enough.
The news also often only covers war that directly affect the US or our closest allies, third world nations are most often sadly ignored.
@@AL-lh2ht And.. the Israel vs Gaza thing cannot really be seen as a War as Gaza is not a state.

Thank you for doing this.
I always felt a little upset that the majority of people were shocked by what are the recent Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza wars, not necessarily because of the scale and devistation, or the sudden unpredicted happening, but because people think wars don't really happen anymore, or make light of any as not really wars.
Yeah like who tf cares about ukraine russia palestine and israel like they are old news like dafuq betch dafuq
I think it has more to do with the ease of technology use, higher definition cameras, etc
there are no gopro wearing Yemenese fighters so way less exposure to the world stage. Also we dont invest or care about africa o news here doesnt care especially when some of these conflicts have been going on for years. Sudan made it into the news for like a day
To be fair, most of the wars listed were insurgencies or sudo-civil wars that just seems to be slowly burning forever, while Ukraine and Israel are more sudden inter-state conflicts which feel like more of an event rather than just a tragic status quo. We did get a lot of news articles about the recent African coups, as well.
@@Descriptor413 Israel-Gaza also counts as an insurgency by that metric. The difference isn't about them not being major wars, it's about the perspective. Which wars get attention has more to do with who the audience is than how big the war is. And the audience here is mostly the west. The war in Yemen deserves a LOT more attention than it got, but the west didn't care about it. We even have people ludicrously calling the war in Ukraine the deadliest war since WW2, which only reveals their ignorance cos that title is very clearly taken by the Second Congo War, which despite being only two decades old most people in the west have never even heard of (as is typically the case with African conflicts). Hell the US Iraq war has a higher death toll, but didn't arouse anywhere near as much of a reaction. Cos what makes Ukraine special is just that it's an attack on the west. Israel also enjoys a special place in the western consciousness that neither Africa, Asia or Latin America does.
A common pattern u can see with most major wars lately is that they were fought based on historical significance and cultural differences for the countries involved. Its not so much about ideology anymore.
Unless, like me, you consider nationalism an ideology, which is what leads to this sudden obsession with cultural arguments.
Ideology always was just justification for old etnic conflits. But still is present - in Columbia or in Ukraine.
My brother in Christ you just described an ideology
Nationalism is an ideology
here's a mind fark for ya. it was *never* about "IdEoLoGy". it was always about wealth and power. ideology was merely the tool to manipulate the masses to fight for those that are after the latter.

1:03 The idea to intervene in Mexico wasn't motivated by charity, but rather because Republicans needed votes. By proposing intervention, they claimed to care about "American citizens in Mexico." as well as offering a "solution" to the fentanyl epidemic. However, as we know, every country where the U.S. intervenes often ends up worse off than before, which is why Mexico's president refused the "help".

I propose listing the wars in descending order of number of deaths so far this year and then you can produce video's following that order and see which ones will bring more follow up questions

I really can’t stand the fact that the news of the Sudanese civil war was discussed only two days and the Yemen civil war is not even mentioned while the war in Ukraine has been discussed months, in Yemen millions have perished for the war and in Sudan 6000 people have dined in yurt a few months, some conflicts aren’t more important than another ones, people die and perish in every war.
That’s mainstream media cherry picking what specific war or armed conflict they want to talk about. Take what’s going on between Israel or Palestine, or even Ukraine and Russia for example. They will on endlessly talking about the endless updates of those conflicts while not mentioning the already existing conflicts that were already going on in the world.
It’s sad & very disheartening at the same time because while many other hundreds or even thousands of people lose their lives in conflicts in other regions/countries some will only pick certain ones to report on.
In the thumbnail you highlighted Mozambique but then didn't talk about it 🤔🤔🤔

Hi TLDR! It may be helpful for your viewers to explain that a war is a conflict that reaches 1000 combat deaths per annum. So, 999 combat deaths in a year would be considered a conflict, not a war (the number may seem abstract, but 1000 is the number that scholars have agreed upon).
I suppose the silver lining of this video is that the end of war in the Americas is conceivable within our lifetimes.
There is no universally agreed-upon definition of war, and certainly not among scholars. Plus the one you propose does not seem to be the one they favoured for this video, as for instance the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict falls well short of that number of fatalities.
@@accountseven1085 There are too many sources that back 1000 combat deaths defined as a war to list. I have degrees in both IR and history, and this is the definition that most scholars use, however, I recommend that you do your own research. You'll notice that he (and you) does not call the the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict a war - as well as the other conflicts that he correctly calls conflicts.
@@drfelren I also have a degree in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies, although it's a pointless argument from authority anyway 😅
To my knowledge, the 1000-fatalities threshold was popularized by the Correlates of War dataset, and has been perpetuated by many of the important academic initiatives to gather conflict data - UCDP and others. CoW and its analogues certainly have importance in the academic field and they have relevance if only as an empirically impactful definition.
As practical as that metric is though, it remains an arbirtrary one chosen for analytical imperatives. War is a very complex concept historically, culturally, sociologically, linguistically, etc. and if you zoom out from the realm of quantitative data analysis there are countless ways to define it that rely on wildly different criteria (see even the basics: Clausewitz, Aron, Kaldor...)
@@accountseven1085 You certainly know what you are talking about. Scholars will never agree to something as arbitrary as when a conflict becomes a war, hence the simplification of 1000 combat deaths per annum. However, war like you state is complex and is often more of a system that involves - defense economics, troop maneuvers, and wider geopolitical interests - than a conflict, which may be a brief flare up of violence.
The upbeat tone of voice makes this sound like a weather report of death and destruction

The thumbnail is misleading. Why are there countries in South America colored yellow if they're not mentioned in the video?
*Question:*
I've seen a lot of noise about how conflicts in West Africa, the Mideast, or Taiwan would detract Military Support from Ukraine, stretch the USA too thin, and Ultimately lead to a capitulation to Russian Territorial Aggression. My question is how much of the present world conflicts since 2022 are motivated by Russia calling in favours for it's beneficiaries to start making noise to try and accomplish this even on just a level of political perception amongst western democratic populations, in order to generate even an illusion of stress that could help to damage Ukraine? Because if Russia collapses, there goes all of the assistance both over and under the table that goes to all these other countries and groups, often through secondary and tertiary entities. I'm not saying it's all smoke and mirrors, but I'm saying that I wouldn't be surprised if Russia is leaning on the scales.
Support for Ukraine is already wavering in the states especially since many think Ukraine is not showing any results for their offensive, which they are.

I just spent a month in northeast India along the border of Myanmar. In Mizoram, India, they are accepting displaced people from Myanmar who have fled the war. But those refugees are in a difficult situation in which the central Indian government doesn’t want to accept them as refugees and provide protection and refugee status because they don’t not want to anger that military government of Myanmar who is allies with China. So the central Indian government is basically giving a blind eye to these refugees who can’t legally work in India. They are also not allowing NGOs or international organizations to come and give aid and support to the refugees community there. A lot of geopolitical tension in the region that is not receiving enough attention and there needs to be more awareness of the issue by the international community.
Because Myanmar military also has good relationship with india and we need them to perform our operations in there country and we also sell them some weapons
Thank you for that information, I didn’t know about that. I’ve also been told that India has invested in a trade route that runs through Myanmar which is another reason for India’s response to the situation. @@pedropagan3465The guy is a dimwit. India doesn't support the junta. To say that we have good relations with them is hilarious. We have not recognized their control and very grudgingly started communication in the first place. And unlike US, we don't have any intentions of engaging in foreign conflicts.
But geopolitics and domestic politics at play here. India has many investments in Myanmar. Also, compeletely ignoring or being hostile the junta that has now control over Myanmar means pushing it towards China who doesn't give a f about democracy or people's rights.
@@pedropagan3465The central government has very carefully built an anti muslim nationalist narrative in the country. They have branded NGOs as anti national organisations propogating foreign propaganda. They have been very critical of rohnigya refugess. Armenia has closed that issue. The new PM appears to be smarter than his predecessor. Azerbaijan offered of returning of ALl refugees from both sides. Armenia calculated that 500k azeris would return to armenia (not nagorno-karabakh) and additional 1 million would return to nagorno-karabakh. They don’t want half million azeri in armenia, so they closed this issue seems like forever.
The fact that the Syrian civil war has been ongoing for 12 years is shocking.
South Sudan is pretty bad too
I think we are about to enter a new era of conflicts. Now that the most of the Middle eastern civil wars have died down, iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Libya have all seen a reduction in conflict. I think we will see a major shift to a different region. You usually see conflicts break out in waves across a region, I think central Asia will be the next major area. Besides the Tajik civil war, there hasn't been any particularly large wars or conflicts in this area. I hope it stays that way but i highly doubt it.
South east asia could be another area. Spill over from Myanmar has already caused new conflicts in Bangladesh and India and i wouldn't be surprised if spill over affects China and Thailand soon. If the Junta fully collapses we could see an explosion of violence across the region as many of the ethnic militia look to unite their whole ethnic group many of whom live in other countries as well as irradentist claims leading to violence between groups.
There has always been a conflict in South East Asia and apart from Myanmar, all countries are stable and growing.

An international war too since it wants to take land
But MEXICO? Really? Noone is threatening the integrity of the Mexican government
A war on drugs isn't a war

as a brazilian, i can confirm what brazil its always in civil wars, there is so much criminals, and in this war we have 30+ Burned-out buses just in a ¨milicia war¨
What's the definition of WWIII?
Burma has spent very little time historically not in a civil war of some kind
And for some reason US haw a bone in all these wars
Because we can stay out of anything
Forgot about the war the the English speaking region of Cameroon.
The key question
Are things getting worse?
Media always gives that impression, even though on the whole things may be improving
Not only worse, but reigniting
Syria, Libia and Yemen sure got the bar high in the 2010’s and it’s getting like that in more territories
@@TheGringuish12 just your impression, or do you have the information
My impression but I’ve been following every conflict since 2011 and my impression it’s not necessarily fueled by recent media consumption
@@TheGringuish12 I recall from about ten years ago, I was told that a reputable organisation looked at world conflict since WW2, and concluded it was slowly getting better
Just checked this out. Yes overall deaths have been generally dropping. Though conflicts have got worse over the past few years. Hopefully someone will dangle Mr P out of a window and improvement will get back on track
You forgot about the stuff happing in Indonisian Papua New Guine!
