I had to laugh as I've found and planted Hairy Potatoes as well. In fact I was so busy that fall that I almost didn't get them dug up. Boy was I surprised by all the Potatoes we had! Big, small and everything in between. My kids helped me to plant as I didn't plan on these being planted they went I to a freshly cleared area just for them and very little in the way of soil prep. My 6 year old wanted to do it her way to see what would happen and she buried some of those long eyes length ways. They sent out shoots and buds and grew baby taters all along the way. Talk about a happy kid! Good memories of "Hairy Potatoes ".
I planted my Red Norland seed potatoes in a 30-gallon container this weekend. This is my first time growing potatoes. I can't wait to see yours and my harvest.
Loved the hairy potato rescue mission!! You guys always put a smile on my face! Thank you so much for the mention, it truly means more than words can express. I bet those potatoes will do great and you will have a great harvest, so exciting!! Big hugs to you both 🤗
Don't say kick the bucket in this current pandemic situation, Doc! LOL Good update and good seeing you both having fun in the garden. Take care and stay safe, Rob
I'm growing all of my potatoes this year in grow bags ... and your 'super soil'! Along with the seed potatoes that I purchased, I too found some 'hairy potatoes' in the pantry! I popped those in too! Don't want to waste food!! It's good to clean out under cabinets once in a while, Tina. ^-^ I did that once and found Easter candy that I had hidden from the kids so they wouldn't eat it all at once.....about 20 years AFTER I had hidden it! BAHAHA!!!
Hello Mark and Tina hope y'all are doing well. Can't wait to see how the potatoes grow and try next year what I learn from y'all. Stay safe sending prayers 🙏 and God's blessings. Much love and big tx hugs from South Tx.
I wouldnt judge it too much on this planting... You can find our other (more normal) bucket potatoes in the gardening playlist to see how they do in buckets when done correctly....
This will be an interesting series. Cool salvage on your hairy potatoes. Can’t beat those little potatoes in a dish with creamed peas. Y’all stay safe!
I just got done planting potatoes in buckets too I planted them over 3 weeks so hopefully they all won’t come in at the same time Thank you again love your channel
I had a few potatoes that had started putting on eyes and I put them in an old garbage can. I can’t wait to see how mine and yours do this year. God bless y’all.
Hi guys. If you should recall, I asked you about planting potatoes in buckets awhile back. Thanks for doing this for us. We love our taters but they're so expensive. Can't wait to try this & keep following up with yours. Now I just have to wait on the one's I have to start to sprout. God Bless.
This will be interesting to see. I have done that before, forgetting about potatoes & then they sprout. I’ll be watching, now that I’m back. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🙏🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏
Dont set your expectations too high... Not the best start in life, and that is more potatoes than should probably be in a bucket, so we are hoping for a nice little crop of baby potatoes....
Good idea throwing them in the buckets! Last year, and this year, I’m growing mine in grow bags. Mainly because it’s fun for my grandson to dump them out 😂😂 He’s 10, I bet he’d like ti do the buckets next time!
you guys are the best--keep the faith and remember no matter how dark the sky seems in your life the sun comes up for another day...its gonna be ok--hugs
It will be interesting to see the results. Potatoes are grown commercially in this area of Washington. Russets aren’t my favorites, except as French fries. I love steamed tiny red potatoes with butter and Yukon Gold for potato salad. Our neighbor, Dave, sells liquid organic fertilizers to local farms. Dave was given a bin of 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch diameter red potatoes that were too big for his customer’s niche tiny potatoes market (they sell for $1.99-$3.99 per pound at the grocery store). Dave gave potatoes to everyone he knew and passed on a big box full to us. We shared with family and friends and we’ve eaten lots of tiny red potato salad and fried potatoes and steamed potatoes this spring. I leave the tender skins on.
Bumblebee Junction Nice. I’ll bet they’re delicious, especially when they’re small and new. The tiny red ones we have now were from last summer’s harvest, but taste like they were dug up yesterday. Whatever storage the farmer uses, it makes for really good “old” potatoes. We’ve been keeping them in the garage, but our weather is warming up.
We grow purple ones. Just one in with 1 or 2 eyes in and cover a little, when see green cover. Keep doing that until filled to the top. You get pretty good yealed
Doing mine in self wicking containers. We'll see how they turn out. I used your soil recipe as a basis. I used beer cans for my wicking containers. We can't recycle because of the shutdown (stupid!) so it was a great use for them.
I enjoyed your video, even got a few laughs,I put my potatoes in two weeks ago in fish crates ,some of the potatoes and up,through the ground, carrots, onions, beet are all doing well, this is my first year trying the super soil mix, except the potatoes,I use 6-12-12 fertelizer on the spuds.thanks for the information, stay safe.
I have in my life seen such hairy potatoes.!!! I am just like everyone else, having a blast watch u guys with your bucket garden. I just put out 6 bags myself. 3 were yukon gold seed potatoes and the other 3 were what I thought to be hairy potatoes I found in my bin, until I saw what REAL hairy potatoes are supposed to look like on your video. Yall be safe.
Hey y'all! My daughter cut red taters and yellow taters up in pieces and planted em in a cattle feed bucket, it's blue.. she covers it up with soil out from the pasture the cows been running in. And down here in South East Texas the dirt isn't that great. But, those things grew wild! Idkw she got the idea of cutting em into pieces but she had two buckets and potatoes to last the yr for them. A family of big eaters and five of em. It worked. She didn't know when to dig em out, so had to tell her how me and my Dad did it. I was really proud of her. This year they did a big garden. With rabbit poo and cow mix. That dirt looks great for growing. Can't wait to see what she gets out of her garden. They grow thier own beef, rabbits, chickens etc. And they're just on 10 acres. She's got her Grandma's green thumb. I thought y'all would find that grow way really interesting. Y'all stay well, take care.
I'm from SE Texas and we've always cut our taters. When I see people on UA-cam not cut theirs I always wonder why they don't unless they just don't have the space for more plants. I'm the only one in my family that plants whole potatoes sometimes if I'm running low on feedsacks or buckets. In the ground mine are cut.
Awe Mark your not supposed to rat Tina out about the potatoes 🥔 waisting away in the back of the cabinet 😂. We love growing potatoes, we have done them in grow bags but never a bucket, gonna be interesting to see how they grow for you. 😁 Cheryl
I love new potatoes cooked with green peas in a cream sauce.. cook the potatoes until just getting tender and add peas , drain and make a cream sauce and bring it just until heated through.. I also love them cooked with green beans with bacon fat for seasoning.. not a lot, just about a tbsp..
Sure is a good video. I've been thinking about growing some potatoes in a bucket. The worse thing that could happen is you grow a 100 pounds of potatoes. Have a great day.
Shutdown has me planting tons of stuff this year. I planted red potatoes for the first time in buckets. Really hoping they do well. I put only one seed potato in each bucket. Wish the POA would let me till the yard.
Hmmm. I always plant mine longest hairiness down. I also put mine only on 1" soil & keep adding around every set of leaves always leaving a pair above my soil. Have fun with the experiment.
Can't wait to see what you get😀 Our 1st time planting potatoes at the old place I think we dug about a foot and a half deep to cover the whole thing (hairy/spindles). Hilled twice and did good. Didn't know they didn't have to be buried all the way🤔😆
We just planted most of ours..... I have a 10 ft raised bed that I plant full of potatoes in my main garden. I am trying to use a old laundry basket also that will happen this weekend. Now onto the garden area we share with our neighbors lord help us we have 3 - 35 ft beds and 3 - 10 ft beds. AND still have some left over so they will be going in a small garden that I am going to till and plant this weekend. If these things do as well as last year we are gonna be in big trouble. We gifted a lot last year and this year we planted more than last year.
Carrots for sure... Onions we added as a companion in an upcoming vid... We dont usually grow a lot of the others... I will see though what we have seeds for...
lol....I really love your laugh Mark...made my day....Anyways thanks for showing this video, I was curious of what variety of potatoes you grow....I grow both the Russets and Yukon Gold. I have never done them in buckets. I will be following to see how they do. You mentioned that you grow your potatoes differently. Do you have a video already on that, or are you going to be making one?
Yes, there are other vids of us growing potatoes in buckets and our harvests... They are in our gardening playlist on the main page, just click our logo... Our norm to grow here are Kennebec... Very smooth and buttery !
Interesting to know what I can do with all those potatoes I usually throw away... Did you make a video showing how they turned out in the end? I would be very interested to know. Thank you (Now I am going to watch your other video) Blessings to you both ~ Suzy-from-Pataskala-Ohio-Zone-6b~
We're not doing any this year, other crops have priority. Next year we'll have use several of the IBC tote raised planters that I built this year or use some of the new one we plan to build next year.
The jury may be out, on as good of production from store bought super market grade food, used for seed. My potatoes grown from store bought are growing, but few and tiny leaves on main stems over 16"s tall? Am in my 4th year growing in tubs, 10 gallon, never seen this before. Theory is, food grade is sprayed for preservation, longer shelf life, unless they are "True Organic". I was goina ask your opinion and low and behold, a video on hairy super market potatoes!! Still would like your opinion. TFS, stay safe and well Mark
I watched the videos of you making your super soil from a year or so ago and the video of you making your container soil. Do you use the container soil for all of the vegetables that you grow?
They get sort of a general water each morning... Not a lot... And less once they start to shade the ground they are planted in... And no water the last week...
I planted 4 sweet potatoes in 2 buckets, to try. But my sweet potatoes don't have long stems on them. I put enough mud to cover the potatoes with the mud but the buckets don't have as much mud in them as yours does. Should I have covered the potatoes with more mud and covered the hairs of the potatoes or what?
Oh dear... I hope you planted slips and not the whole potato... Sweet potatoes differ from potatoes in that way... If you did plant the sweet potatoes, they will still grow beautiful vines (which I hear are edible)... But if you want sweet potatoes, wait for the eyes to break the surface by about 6 inches, then break them away from the sweet potato at the base and plant them to grow sweet potatoes...
I'm doing a bucket of potatoes. This is my first time. I didn't use the whole potatoes. I cut them up, with eyes growing. They have grown 3 feet out of the tops of the 5 gallon bucket. When do you know they should be harvested?
We usually leave them till the vines die back pretty good... Then cut the vines, but wait a week to dig... Cutting signals the potatoes to thicken their skins for winter which helps them store longer...
Yes, and No... LOL It is a blend we made just for container gardening... That video is in the Bucket Garden playlist on our main page (just click our logo to go there)....
Gigglez for T today. My son was scared for life with hairy taters. Ever see a 12 y.o. dance a ballet while wiping like a pup? Oh my he was creeped out! I always chit my taters that way & grow in Rubber Maid trash can ( limited space here ).
Operation "Hairy Potatoes "... No hairy potato left behind!!!! Hahaha!!!

But if you want sweet potatoes, wait for the eyes to break the surface by about 6 inches, then break them away from the sweet potato at the base and plant them to grow sweet potatoes...
😂😂😂mine look like that too❤❤❤💌💌💌
LOL... Thanks for watching Amy !
Mark it’s food, it should be good and tasty. Y’all take care.
LOL... I love the little baby potatoes that come from dense planting... My guess is that we will have plenty...
Please tell us how you make the soil
We did... It is in our gardening playlist, and the bucket gardening playlist as well... The playlists are on main page, just click my logo....
I have 3 types of potatoes growing in 5 gallon buckets.
Awesome... Our normal ones to plant in the buckets are Kennebec potatoes....
Can you grow sweet potatoes in buckets too?
Yes, but you can only do one slip per bucket... If you have several buckets though, you can get a pretty nice yield !
Is that super soil?
Yes, and No... LOL It is a blend we made just for container gardening... That video is in the Bucket Garden playlist on our main page (just click our logo to go there)....
never new how to plant them every time I tried never got them to produce
I sure hope this will help to change your luck... Or see our regular planting vids in the gardening playlist... They might help as well...
Gigglez for T today. My son was scared for life with hairy taters. Ever see a 12 y.o. dance a ballet while wiping like a pup? Oh my he was creeped out!
I always chit my taters that way & grow in Rubber Maid trash can ( limited space here ).
We had a neighbor many many years ago the grew them in a trash can and he always did well !
Throw some of those potatoes in that wood chip pile, promise they will grow
Yuppers... We like growing them under a leaf pile too !
No one needs to go out and buy seed potatoes.
No... If they will grow eyes then they are usable in the garden...
