How to Grow Potatoes in Buckets: Planting Techniques!

  • Today we take our seed potato sections from a previous video and plant them in our buckets! I'm using 5 gallon buckets from Ace Hardware, but you can use whatever container you've got lying around the house.
I mixed up some compost, peat moss, and perlite, along with a handful of worm castings for the soil mix. After laying down 4" of soil, I placed two seed potato chunks down and covered up with 6" of soil, then watered it in.

Commenting for the algorithm. This video is 5 years old but it will help any beginner looking to grow potatoes. You’ve 100% been the most helpful gardener on UA-cam for me for the last 4 years and some other gardeners may not be as lucky as me finding you when I started my first year of gardening. Much love and thank you brother!

I used to be a Chinese farmer. After we cut a pile of potatos , we mixed them in ashes, then bury the little piece potato into soil right away. The ashes would seal and dry out the cutting wound.

    Two things about that bucket:
    1: Ace should sponsor you
2: You should make and sell your own bucket with that drawing on it. It's so helpful!

I really like the grow bags with a velcroed on 'garage door' in the side. Then you can check the potatoes and carrots and dont harvest too soon or too late. Also, I fill my raised beds with chicken manure and the chopped straw bedding and the year before leaf compost. I fill the beds in the fall and then it's aged just right come spring!

Over the last few weeks of enjoying your videos, it crossed my mind what a wonderful thing it would be to give children something to do while confined to home over covid, and even before watching this video I was convinced you are really the perfect person to do it. It is not solely your lovely, engaging, unaffected manner, but the wonderful clarity in the way you describe every process, and interesting facts about *why* we need to do a particular thing. You really are a natural, and I hope you will give some serious thought to the idea. A whole series, specifically for school-aged children: you wouldn't have to do anything differently, just a nice series about, say, "the wonderful thing that can happen on a windowsill". I think it would be a wonderful success. And while I'm here, huge thanks

I agree with respondents who really enjoy your content. One rather "shops around" when searching for advice on whatsoever subject one needs more information...and I personally reject any host with a massively irritating tone, manner or condescending attitude as well as those who preface their videos with uninteresting and irrelevant preamble before getting to the meat of the issue. Conversely, some hosts refuse to take the time needed to thoroughly explain the reasoning (or experiences) in more complex subjects, and fail to provide the wealth of information gleaned from a topic, such as this, that you presented in multiple videos. You have struck a perfect milieu. I have found, in life, that (much as I love science & peer reviewed data) when an experienced enthusiastic and passionate individual shares the secrets and small tricks of the trade gleaned from YEARS of experimentation, that information is INVALUABLE. I feel such gratitude you are sharing the wealth of your experiences. I also talk to gardeners in my area, AS ALL THE RESEARCH IN THE WORLD can not replace a lifetime of local experience. Micro biomes vary from lot to lot given what structures one has (or lacks), the quality of one's soil, and a myriad of other details...and LOCAL anecdotal information in the form of "secrets" can greatly impact which varieties or cultivars THRIVE in one's soil. I love talking to those more experienced than I as they tend to be so kind and pass on local and/or general "secrets" to those who express genuine interest. I encourage people to TALK to/question/interview other gardeners...I have yet to interact with a gardener who was not delighted to offer such help. It is but one way that kindness given repays itself many times over, as STRANGERS will go out of their way to HELP (or mentor) those who eagerly seek out such help.

I followed your method(my first year doing potatoes) and I didn't even have to go to step 3. They were ready to go after about 2 and a half months and I had a ton of potatoes. I was kind of surprised...maybe my climate had something to do with it. It definitely worked though. it makes for a nice little treasure hunt when you dump them. I am gonna let my son do that part next time so he can have some fun.

Are you using food grade pails? If they are not food grade, the chemicals from the plastic will leech into your potatoes. The number in the triangle on the bottom of the pail should be 2, or 4, or 5. 2, 4, 5 keeps us alive; 1, 3, 6, and 7 puts us to heaven!!! PLEASE ONLY USE FOOD GRADE PAILS!

@@1papester You're welcome! I actually use 2 pails, one inside the other. The inner pail has cut-outs in it. I can pull the inner pail out and pick potatoes for my meal. I then put the inner pail back in the solid outter pail. This method does not disturb the plant so the rest of the potatoes keep growing. I'd be happy to send you a picture of my pails if you would like. Email if you would like the picture/instructions. DebbySoldan@gmail.com

So I started my first batch of red potato chits almost two months ago. The foliage is well above the 5 gallon bucket rim right now.
I’ve had to add additional soil multiple times. The plants look beautiful thus far! I don’t know what my end result will be however....I started my 2nd batch the same way in 5 gallon buckets but instead of hilling I filled with soil two inches below rim of buckets I’ll let you know the results if and when they come up.
