- The Knights of Solamnia are commonly known as disgraced at best or outlaws and murdered on sight at worst. But this wasn’t always the case, and would drastically change in the War of the Lance. Let's discover the knighthood's history, orders and purpose.

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam and today we are going to talk about the Knights of Solamnia. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to this channel, ring the bell, and you can further help this channel, and pick up Dragonlance Gaming materials, using my affiliate link in the description below. I will have to be succinct as it can be a lengthy discussion, but on my honor, I will strive to do the knighthood justice in this presentation.
When I reflect on the Knights of Solamnia I immediately think of the order’s heroes or the Oath “Est Sularus oth Mithas”, or My Honor is My Life, but that is just a small part of what makes up the order. Let’s explore the Knighthood through the Ages of Krynn for a full measure on which to judge them by.
It all starts in the Age of Dreams with a conflict between the Ergothian Emperor and a rebellion in the northeastern reaches of his empire. In the spirit of brevity, the emperor sent his commander, Vinas Solamnus, to crush the rebellion, but when Vinas arrived he judged the rebellion justified and not only switched alliances, but lead the raid on Daltigoth that would be later known as the War of Ice Tears. The capital fell to the rebellion within two months, and the citizens sued their emperor for peace and won their freedom. They declared Vinas Solamnus their king and named their newly won land Solamnia after him.
Vinus was an honorable man, and was not foolish enough to think all others would be the same. In 1775 PC he decided to go on a Quest of Honor in order to discover how he could maintain unity in his united kingdoms of Solamnia. After weeks of searching he found himself in the wilds of the Sancrist Isle. He came upon a glade featuring a black granite stone in its center. Upon that stone, Vinus supplicated himself to the gods' wisdom. Three deities appeared before him: Paladine. the god of balance, justice, and defense; Kiri-Jolith, the god of just warfare; and Habbakuk, god of good nature, loyalty, and the elements. They gave him the outline for a knighthood which would serve to inspire and defend the citizens of Solamnia. The knighthood would consist of three separate orders to balance each other. Each order would reflect one of these three gods ideals. As a final blessing the gods transformed the stone into a pillar of translucent white crystal which would sanctify the glade and seal the unity of the gods to uphold the knighthood as long as they walked in honor and worthiness.
The Knighthood would become known for developing men into true heroes. One of which is Bedal Brightblade who single handedly stood between fierce desert nomads and a pass into Solamnia and fought them to a standstill. He held that pass as guardian until reinforcements arrived. Another is Huma Dragonbane, who with the aid of a Silver Dragon managed to slay the Queen of Darkness, banishing her to the Abyss with the Dragonlance, and ending the third dragon war.
The Age of Might would prove to be a defining moment for the Knights of Solamnia. Up until the Cataclysm, the Knights were the greatest order of Chivalry in the history of Krynn. After the cataclysm, they were blamed for the loss and devastation. Though as an order, they were not responsible, but there were knights who had an opportunity to change the course of history, preventing the cataclysm from ever taking place. One such knight was Lord Soth of Dargaard Keep, a Knight of the Rose. Lord Soth was warned by his mistress about the Cataclysm, and when he started toward Istar to stop it he crossed a troop of elven clerics who threatened to reveal the truth of his murdered wife and his illegal wedding to his mistress. Rather than face his own shame, he turned back and the fiery mountain crashed down on Krynn. Not all knights had such shame or lived as corrupt lives, but rather tried to leverage the catastrophe to expand their land holdings. Combined, these acts turned the citizens against the order and their fate was sealed. Knights were murdered, their homes were invaded and families slain or forced into exile. The Knights who remained were forced to live in secret. And some would leave their homeland and settle on Sancrist Isle...
Thank you for watching today's video! Do you have a favorite Solamnic Knight? Or do you think they are a goodie two-shoes organization that deserved to go the way of the Dodo? Leave a comment below.
I haven't read any of the books for a decade and only up to dragons of summer flame. From what I recall the most interesting things about them was the situations that they found themselves in. Without the villains to fight they could be a bit boring. That being said compared to the more generic Knight orders in other words they are fairly complex. One last thing are you doing the other order like the iron Legion or did I just miss them?
@@mobbofmobs8937 I haven't yet, but I will eventually.
@@mobbofmobs8937 character build intensive stories are definitely a audio book preferred interface for most. ✨
Human and Sturm Brightblade.
Edit: sigh autocorrect
My favorite will always be Sturm Brightblade. I do think it's an organization that had it's place, but fell and I can only hope someday fully recovers.
Yea, I can’t wait to get to feature him in an episode.
Another great video!!!
My live group just ran into their first draconian encounter. Sturm made his reflex save and Brightblade did not get stuck! Figured this would be a good achievement unlock 😉
That’s cool
i ran into a group of these knights in a planar sphere while playing through baldur's gate 2. i was looking for the lore behind them. thank you so much for the vid.
Thank you for watching!
The knighthood was always my favorite part of Dragonlance, and definitely resonated more with Sturm about the spirit of the measure rather than the letter. Always kept that in mind when playing LG characters in D&D and remembering what Vinas Solamnus said about Honor. That it needed a balance of wisdom, temperance, justice and courage else it could not stand.
That’s great! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. I've been a big fan of knights and their codes since I read King Arthur stories and Dragon Lance brought that feeling to life in Sturm Brightblade. I'm currently playing a Paladin of Paladine and Kiri-Joleth as a Knight of the Crown. He's 20 so very newly minted. Currently playing in the 5e DragonLance campaign.
That’s awesome. My first actual character, that I cared about, was a Paladin. I’ve always had a soft spot for them and Knights of Solamnia.
My favorites you did not mention. Sturm and the golden general both Both played a big part in the recovery of the knights in the time they where to busy with their own power struggle then to focus on the enemy in the war of the lance
I have videos on them both!
I got into the Dragonlance series by playing a Knight in the Shadow of the Dragon Queen module.
Reyner Crestford went from a naive, bright eyed squire, to Sir Reyner Crestford, the Green Knight, Hero of Kalaman, Commander of the Greenshield Brigade, Wielder of the Dragonlance, and the First Paladin.
I'll never forget him
That’s great!
Wow! I used to avidly read those books as a kid in the early 90s. I think the high ideals of the knighthood had a formative affect on my current strong sense of morality
That’s great!
I have to commend your voice acting. It's very concice and engaging. I look forward to more deep dives into dragonlance as it was my first ever campaign setting.
Thank you! I have much more coming.
Thank you for taking the time to create this wonderful synopsis of the Solamnic Knighthood's complex, conflicted history.
Thank you for watching. I like doing this.
The book that brought me into the world of Dragonlance was Legends of Huma and it brought me much grief when Heart died. Years later played a Dragonlance MUD called ArcticMud, I was in the clan called Knights of Solamnia. We role played closely to the lore. Had to do three quests, got someone to sponsor before anointed Knight of Crown. Good times. Love Dragonlance. Till date, yet to find a fantasy world as captivating, perhaps only maybe Conan is comparable.
I really need to read more Conan.
Thank you so much for making this video! I've been trying to adapt the Knights of Solamnia into my own setting, and you've helped me a lot!
Glad I could help!
You’re lore, great sage, are incredible to listen to! Please! Keep them coming!
Thank you! I will keep putting them out if you keep tuning in :)
I love the Knights of Solamnia. I usually play a Knight while in Krynn and I usually play a Knight of the Sword
I'm a big fan as well.
The finest of them all, Sturm Brightblade! For he lived life in all it's beauty and horror. It's joy and sadness. And in so doing, found the true meaning not of honor but dignity!!!
Thank you for watching!
[Laughs in Huma Dragonbane]
One of my favorite Knights was Pirvan and how he rose from a thief to a Knight of the Rose.
Great novels
The lore is my favorite. Looking forward to the day there's a huge playlist of it I can turn on at bedtime.
It’s coming, slowly, but it’s coming.
The books about Huma Dragonbane were written by Richard A. Knaak, who was unknown to me at that time but I really liked his writing style. My first AD&D character was a KoS. In 3rd Edition D&D this class was available and I wonder how it could be transferred into the 5th Edition. Hope we will see more future content from your side and WotC.
I think I am going to stick with AD&D 1E for a while.
This is old, but I'm currently playing a young Solamnic Knight, Sir Amyer the Kind, in the 5e DragonLance campaign.
Your video was well put together. You did a mastersful jod of cutting the fat away from this and keeping the information intact.
Thank you!
But of course the best facet of the knights is their impeccable sense.of style when it comes to facial hair.
Hahah
Hello.
Can a Squire or Knight Postulate wear their Father's Amor and carry their sword before actually becoming a Knight of the Crown?
Assuming the father is no longer active duty.
Or do they have to wait until they are Knighted to first don the Armor?
I'm making a K.of S. Class for 5e.
I'm torn on this one.
Thank you for reading
Hello, Sturm Brightblade wore his fathers armor and wielded his sword before he was a Knight. It only matters if other Knights see you and complain. It could effect your entry into the order, as you’re kinda pretending to be something you’re not.
@@DLSaga
Thanks for the feedback.
Strum was practicing the "fake it to you make it" philosophy.
JK . He made it big time during Dragons of Winter Knight. One could argue that was the low point of the Knighthood during the Age of Dispair (they had become too strict and Lawful Dumb), and Sturm helped them out with his courage because he helped win the battle and evolve the Order of the Crown for the War of the Lance.
--
I'll make it a level 1 Class feature that the player can make up a suit of armor and Shield and weapon that comes from their ancestry. The player also may design their own logo or banner, or coat of arms at level 1.
Then at level 3 (when they become Knighted) they may don the Armor.
The player will be eager to return to their village or their Masters Castle and be Knighted in their new armor.
Of course, I need to give players the option who have a backstory of not having any ancestry.
Maybe the Knight (NPC) who trained them will give them a gift.
Thanks again for the quick feedback
This is one of the best shit on UA-cam.again,thank you Sir!
Thank you for watching!
Nice video. Really enjoyed it. I believe Jaymes Markham is great KoS character. I know some aren't fans of the "newer" novels but I felt The Rise of Solmnia was a great trilogy.
I have yet to read it, but it’s on my list!
Huma! Huma! Huma!
He's great! Thanks for watching.
I like Sturm and Huma. Huma might get the edge though as he got an awesome Metal song by Dungeon.
Huma doesn’t have the edge... he has the DragonLance. Sturm was a fantastic character... but his journey is nowhere NEAR that of Huma’s.
I was surprised by how much DL inspired metal there is out there. I produced a live news show about it where I played a bunch of music on this channel.
Thank you Sir.
My pleasure.
Greetings,
I was looking over the Dragonlance fandom site and I'm really impressed with how they have the Knights set up.
Let's start with the Crown
High Warrior (Level 20)
Lord of the Crown (Levels 18-19)
Marshal of the Crown (Levels 15-17)
Warden of the Crown (Levels 12-14)
Captain of the Crown (Levels 9-11)
Steward of the Crown (Levels 6-8)
Sergeant of the Crown (Levels 4-5)
Knight of the Crown (Levels 1-3)
Crown Postulant (background)
You could make this PC as a Fighter with the Soldier background or whatever the new background is for the new Dragonlance 5e.
This PC could become a Knight of the Sword or Rose based upon how the campaign goes and what the player wants.
That is an interesting way to handle it as well! There are a lot of fan made options out there now for 5e.
Next things get very complicated with Knights of the Sword.
High Clerist (Level 20)
Lord of the Sword (Levels 18-19)
Marshal of the Sword (Levels 15-17)
Warden of the Sword (Levels 12-14)
Captain of the Sword (Levels 9-11
Steward of the Sword (Levels 6-8)
Sergeant of the Sword (Levels 4-5)
Knight of the Sword (levels 1-3)
Order of Clerists
So it would seem that the background is acolyte , but they could be a folk hero or whatever you make up to give them two good proficiency bonus in.
Also, you could make a Paladin start out at level 1 as a Knight of Sword and go throw the ranks.
Or, you could make a War or Tempest Cleric and make them a Knight of the Sword.
Finally we have the Rose.
High Justice (Level 20)
Lord of the Rose (levels 18-19)
Marshal of the Rose (Levels 15-17)
Warden of the Rose Levels 12-14)
Captain of the Rose. (Levels 9-11)
Steward of the Rose. (Levels 6-8)
Sergeant of the Rose (Levels 4-5
Knight of the Rose (Levels 1-3)
Note, how they don't have a background level. The way I see it, you must be a Knight of the Crown or the Sword first to be a Knight of the Rose. So by level 3, you can make the switch to Rose if you desire. These are most likely Lawful Good in Alignment and more often have the Nobility Background.
Typically once a Knight becomes a Rose they do not go back.
@@DLSaga
Thanks for the feedback.
Even if a PC has the rank of a Captain, they can still be an adventurer.
During their "down time" they must learn battlefield tactics and be ready to answer the call of duty and lead Knights and Shoulders into battle.
Indeed, a Captain of the Crown (Levels 9-11) may return to their castle and country and take command of their unit (sixty men) for the next quest.
Of course higher ups would need to approve such a request.
I'm continuing my efforts to make a Knight Class for the Age of Might with D&D 5e.
Knights of the Crown will have the option to make a sacred Oath and multiclass with some of the Paladin subclasses. They will stay in the Knighthood of course.
The Oath of the Crown is perfect!
"The Oath of the Crown is sworn to the ideals of civilization, be it the spirit of a nation, fealty to a sovereign, or service to a deity of law and rulership. The paladins who swear this oath dedicate themselves to serving society and, in particular, the just laws that hold society together. These paladins are the watchful guardians on the walls, standing against the chaotic tides of barbarism that threaten to tear down all that civilization has built, and are commonly known as guardians, exemplars, or sentinels.
Often, paladins who swear this oath are members of an order of knighthood in service to a nation or a sovereign, and undergo their oath as part of their admission to the order's ranks."
Perfect!
They can also take the Oath of Watchers because their holy patron (Habbakuk) opposes aberrations of magic.
AND!
They can take the Oath of Soul Reving. It's a play from the Lacy of Kain Soul Reaver. I stold some from the Grave Domain (Clerics) Remember, Habbakuk is not a fan of the undead at all.
Nice!
Great video,
Im running several Age of mortals campaign (key of destiny/spectre of sorrow/price of courage). And i need the Knight from the nort (wulfgar) make contact to a knight in flotsam, to come join them...
And i dont know what would be the more "solmanic" way to make such a call... like they are not fond into magic... and there is a country filled with ogres, hags, and black knight in between.
Do you (are any other viewer) have any ideas?
Play up the personal honor or glory angle, put a virtuous NPC in peril, or downplay the distrust of magic a bit as post WotL the knighthood has relied less on the Measure and biases... IMO.
@@DLSaga now im thinking of a knight general who is way to old to answer that call and come across the party just to prove he cant go on... "Someone else" must fill his shoes
It comes down to Sturm or Huma for me.
I can respect that. I think I need to cheer for Vinus. He killed it in the War of the Lance!
"Lord of Knights"? I thought it was "Grand Master"? 🤔
It may change per edition. I reference AD&D first then the other version.
Riva Silverblade if my favorite.
Nice she has some cool adventures.
Sturm Brightblade FTW
He's awesome!
They ever Knight Kaz? Been too long don't remember
I don't believe so, but it has been decades since I read the Huma and Kaz novels.
lord soth was tricked into returning to his home the elves told him his wife was unfaithful and his unborn child wasn't his
I referenced the 1ed DL Adv book. The history was changed in novels and different editions.
@@DLSaga LOL i see thanks for the video by the way
Indeed.
He had an opportunity to make things right and cleanse his soul but his weak Will Power prevented him from carrying out his duty.
The Curse by his wife was epic, but the inner demons and torment of the man is what made Soth such a horrific ghost.
The gods choose him to be the champion to save Istar, so he clearly had amazing potential.
But the passion inside him was not tempered yet.
Vinas Solamnus and or Huma could have gone to Istar.
Soth didn't even get half way there.
Hello.
Does anyone have an idea of the ratio of Knights with regards to the Orders.
Like for every 100 Crown Knights there are 75 Sword and there are 50 Rose.
I have it set up where you must become a Crown Postulate then at Knight of the Crown and later become a Sword, and later still a Rose.
Thanks for reading.
I don’t believe so. In the war of the Lance there were so few knights that they were the minority of the forces. There is information on what it would be if in full force in the war of the Lance sourcebook.
You forgot an order. It's the order of the kingfisher which is the white robe auxiliary order. That formed after the war of souls.
I am unfamiliar with that. Is it in a sourcebook? A novel?
@@DLSaga I don't know in which novel first appears, but it's explained in detail in the Age of Mortals CS Companion and in Knightly Orders of Ansalon, both for 3.0/3.5.
Good VA. But Soth was turned back because the elven women convinced him that his child was his, but the child of one of his Retainers. He allowed her to burn alive with the child and was cursed by her.
Very true. Thanks for watching!
Are there any other Knights of the Black Rose, or is Soth is the only one?
That is his moniker, he is the only one. There is another Death Knight in the Age of Mortals, Austin Krell, but he pales in comparison to Lord Soth.
I’m almost done with The Legend of Huma. My first dragonlance book. I want to know more about the Knights of Solemnia. Where should I go from here?
The Warriors series has a novel of the Knights of the Crown, Sword and Rose. The Galen Benighted novels are great, I have yet to read the Rise of Solamnia series but it looks good too.
@@DLSaga thank you. Wow u have a lot of content to sink my teeth into, u have my subscription!
Derek crownguard lol
That guy.... ugh
That was the low point of the Knighthood during the Age of Dispair.
It was all up from there.
Huma less slew her, than he gave her a splinter and she went all Captain Hammer.
lol okay….
huma did not slay the queen of darkness he exacted an oath from her to leave and never darken krynn at pain of well pain...
This is true. I believe the text referenced was using the spirit of defeat rather than the literal slay, as you cannot kill a god in DL. Traditionally banish is used.
@@DLSaga I was going to say wounded would have been a better choice of words over slay. Still only a minor critique.
Knights of Salami.
They are delicious!
Huma Dragonbane
Yea. He’s great!
Question... are all Knights Of Solamnia human?
As far as I am aware, yes, though there are honorary and celebrated positions held by the non human heroes of the lance.
@@DLSaga Yes. I recall Tanis technically being a Knight Of The Rose after the War Of The Lance
Let's be honest, Sturm was too good for this order
Absolutely!
Hey…if you’re going to talk on a subject, at least learn how to pronounce it correctly.
Sah-lom-nia
If you’re going to correct pronunciation, at least learn that the authors said there is no official pronunciation. This may come as a shock to you, but regionally, pronunciations differ, that’s language.
Thanks for watching anyway ;)
