- Sgt. Major Donna Dunbar retired from the U.S. Marine Corps at Parris Island in 2016. The 46-year-old woman was a mother of two and realtor in Bluffton, S.C., before she died unexpectedly in May 2019.

Never knew her, never knew her story, never knew her accomplishments in life but a 2 minute video said all i needed to know, thank you so much for what you did and who you became. Rest easy, you deserve it but you and yours are the reason I can sleep peacefully at night, Semper Fi.

She was one of my Drill Instructor School Instructors in 2005 at Parris Island. She was a great instructor and a class act. RIP SgtMaj!
It's amazing how some people can live a long life of mediocrity, never actually pushing the limits of what one can do with their short time here. And then there's people like Donna Dunbar, SgtMaj, USMC, who packed a lifetime of achievements, and left such a positive, lasting impression on so many others, into such a short span of time. I look forward to meeting her one day, wherever Marines go to regroup after leaving this life.

A mark unknown. Once known its too late.
16, 46 or 96. Pushing limits for personal success is "I." A selfie.
"I" meets that same mark with no greater gain for a retirement check less gained by stepping on others. Psychological warfare has a double-edged sword and the reaper dont care about lifes sentiments, bravado and accomplishments. Not all that earned and wore the eagle globe and anchor created the carnage.

No one knows the direction of little brown smokey, now. "GodSpeed" is not a human mark allowed to be given by another human yet everything is already marked...GodSpeed.
My dad retired from Parris Island after 30 years and also a SgtMaj. He was lucky to enjoy a long retirement and lived until he was 89. Very sad this young SgtMaj with her life ahead of her didn't get to enjoy life as a civilian with her husband and see her children grow up. My deepest sympathy to her family.
Yeah all the money she would have earned every month w/her pension.....sucks....like my God Father who died at 61 and never saw 1 social security check.....
She was my 1st Sgt at one point... Seen her tear people apart.... She never messed with me but I was also respectful. RIP Donna

I was there in 07, I was in MAG36 but I wished I could've known her.
I saw this and it hit me hard. Then I watched the video and I’m in tears. So proud to be her fellow American. Rest In Peace, Sergeant Major!
I had the pleasure of serving with Sgt Major (then 1st Sgt) Dunbar in Okinawa. She was a true professional!

I wish I had a mentor like her. I was a good Marine and made Ssgt at 25 but after more than one bad experience with a mustang warrant officer I got out at seven years. What a terrific Marine now guarding the gates of Heaven.

My dad was a Master Gunnery Sergeant, he was promoted to warrant officer 01. Then he went to Nam in 1966. He was waiting for a promotion to 2nd Lt. He died in Nam. 1967.

I worked with her husband on MCAS Beaufort. He was an E-9 as well at PMO. Never met his wife, but was impressed that 2 E-9's were a couple. Shame she never got to enjoy her retirement and the monthly money from it she had earned.

Served under her when she was a 1stSgt of Marines. Was reminiscing with some Marines a few weeks ago when they let me know she passed a few years. RIP Sgt Major Dunbar. We still don't know who tossed the dryer out the 4th deck window.
I have much respect for all those that serve in the military and just retiring myself it's touching to hear this.. I personally didn't know her but to make it to the rank of SgtMaj is a hell of accomplishment.. But to have a life cut short is a sad thing..
