I first came to Les Mis through Master of the house which was used for the opening credits of a British Saturday night variety show. then I found it on Utube in the 10th-anniversary concert performance. I liked the music and when Lea Salonga performed this song I was totally blown away. While some may prefer "I dreamed a dream" or "bring him home" it is this version of "On my own" that really hit the spot for me. to that extent, I now have four DVDs of Les Mis, the 10th, and 25th Anniversary versions the latest concert version, and lastly, the movie version my least favorite of them all but saying that Sam Barks' movie Eponine comes closest to Lea for my liking. this song in Lea's performance so calls to me i try to play it on my iPod every night as I go to sleep.
When I was about 10, I would put this song on repeat and sing myself to sleep. When I was 12 and diagnosed with depression, I would come home, listen to this song and cry my eyes out. I am now 16, and I sing this song to myself all the time, reminding myself to pursue my dreams and never give up... This is one of those songs that will take you back to where you were. To me, this is more than a song.
She just makes the song so much more beautiful :3 the pace, the way she makes it feel like she is actually talking to herself. She paints a picture with her voice and it puts goosebumps on my arms every time I hear it
This is and always has been one of my favorite show tunes. I saw the musical for the first time in 10th grade and the second time in 12th grade. I was super excited when they turned it into a movie. I used to sing this all the time. I still feel like it's the story of my life. I don't want to provide spoilers but it's heart breaking. Unrequited love is the worst. We all deserve someone to love us just as much as we love them.
Seen the movie twice in theaters- AMAZING!!!!!!!! This song is one of my favorites. I thought I would hate the movie, being young (younger than most of you may think ;) ) and this probably looks really pathetic next to Katie Hillson's, but this is like my favorite movie now and for all of those who haven't seen it you are missing out an a lot. It really is an inspiring love story, and tells of how people can change, and war and how much people are willing to give up, and how someone will go all
@idbrew it was uploaded in 2010, yes.. but this audio is from the 10th anniversary when lea salonga was still playing eponine. in the 25th anniversary, she was already playing fantine. :)
I addicted to this song after watch Yuna Kim 2013 World FS programe. I never familiar with this song before (my bad), but now I can't get the melody out of my mind.
im not even kidding, thats exactly what happened to me. except i have like anxiety depression and we think i might be bipolar. its an amazing song and it makes me cry everytime. im only 14 now, but its still amazing. hope your doing well
Eponine loves this guy and he doesn't love her back. In her dream land where she is with him, life is perfect and beautiful (even the rain sparkles - "shines like silver"). But in reality he's not with her, he's pursuing someone else ("he is gone, the river's just a river"). She tries to convince herself that "there's a way for us", but really she is the only one in love "but only on my own"
Story of my life, but you know what girls? He will always have a special place in his heart for the underdog, The one who is passive while her enemy flirts way too much! He will always pick the one who respects him for a mature person!
Oh so sorry. Elizabeth HInrichs. I just happened upon this version and can only imagine the pain. This song is good for you. I hope you get some counseling and there are even groups specifically for people that lost someone to suicide. This song has been too much of my song - never really changed.
+PeaceLoverGirl98 I'm only 12, but I can tell you things will get better. My parents split up when I was 5 and kept threatening each other. They always ask me who I love most and I burst into tears. This song helps me too, do whatever you want and don't listen to anyone else. What they say isn't important. If this song means a lot to you, listen to it. RIP PeaceLoverGirl98's dad! He will always love you.
Really good effort Tiffany, thanks, but you need to edit a couple of lyrics. 'It's 'he is there' not 'he's there' and later ther trees are not 'there' as you have said rather when 'the world around me changes, the trees are BARE and everywhere the streets are full of stangers'. Makes a lot more sense, no? Hope this helps and again, thanks for putting this on the site for everyone.
That goes for me too. I'm 14 and have depression. That's because when I was 11 my dad died and it hit me hard. We were really close. The bad part was someone saw me take my anti-depressants and spread a rumor that I'm going to kill myself. I come home and play this song and others to remind myself it will get better.
I've sang it once slower and with the lyrics And now Im all alone again no where to go no one to turn to I did not want your money sir i came out here cause I was told to
I debating if i should do this song for my audition for the play i want to be Eponine, Fantine, javert ( if they modify the the key) so i'll either do this song i dreamed a dream or stars! thumbs up if u think this song!
Who ever started saying that taylor swift would be the new eponine? She could never pull this off and she would ruin the whole move like kristen stewart in snow white and the huntsman
Ok. This is pretty stupid, but Ive never seen Les Mis yet, and I really like this song but I am really bad at interpreting the meanings of songs unless someone tells me. So can someone please tell me what this song is about? :)
I love her voice, and this song, but sometimes I think she sounds a lot like Ariel from little mermaid (are they the same person or just happens to sound a like?)
I'm talking with a boy on the phone who I desperately have a crush on| we talk about totally random things and the things that we can't tell anyone else| he tells me he is going to ask a preppy popular girl to the school dance| I make up a lame excuse that I have to go| UA-cam this song and eat chocolate

Love this song- Eponine is my favorite Les Miz character for SURE.
'Miz' Noo 'mis*'
Lilly- Pop they're both correct
I lost my husband last month and this song really hits me. I can't get through it without tears.
She just makes the song so much more beautiful :3 the pace, the way she makes it feel like she is actually talking to herself. She paints a picture with her voice and it puts goosebumps on my arms every time I hear it
After someone I love left me and chose someone else, I'm listening to this over and over again... So many sleepless nights have passed...
the story of my life...
Glenda Ofiana And mine.
You can relate to the national friend zone anthem? Same...

I addicted to this song after watch Yuna Kim 2013 World FS programe. I never familiar with this song before (my bad), but now I can't get the melody out of my mind.
beautiful song
thanks, she sound like the Disney princesses, and now that you pointed it out, her voice is a bit different from Ariel's, still I love her voice
this is the best version...ever!!!...
i love singing this song!
Never have lyrics so accurate to my life now.
im not even kidding, thats exactly what happened to me. except i have like anxiety depression and we think i might be bipolar. its an amazing song and it makes me cry everytime. im only 14 now, but its still amazing. hope your doing well

You said this was instrumental, but I still love Lea. She has a beautiful voice.
i sang it for the talent show my senior year and i won because of this song
"the trees are BARE and everywhere the streets are full of strangers"
@idbrew whaa, but this is lea salonga singing it, she was eponine in the 10th anniversary
I believe the lyrics are "The trees are bare," not "The trees are there,"
Whyusofail I didn't even catch that mistake, but you are correct.
Singing this in the spring concert xD God this discribes me so well....
My big fan that song on my own and l will sing it fantastic and telneted for me❤
@silverpwet It's basically written to look like it's sung
It's from the 10th Anniversary Concert
Story of my life, but you know what girls? He will always have a special place in his heart for the underdog, The one who is passive while her enemy flirts way too much! He will always pick the one who respects him for a mature person!
@silverpwet the word silver has three notes in it- that's how it's broken up as far as note changes
This song is so true
Oh so sorry. Elizabeth HInrichs. I just happened upon this version and can only imagine the pain. This song is good for you. I hope you get some counseling and there are even groups specifically for people that lost someone to suicide.
This song has been too much of my song - never really changed.
This was in a Broadway show

@idbrew i dont think so. look at the date mr..... it says uploaded april 2010, the silver anniv concert was done october 2010...

Lea Salonga sang Jasmine and Mulan, if that helps. So she definitely does have the voice of a Disney Princess :)
Wish my luck on my audition!
